Check out this post from Catherine Donaldson-Evans on AOL Health.
Carcinogens have spread rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico since the region was devastated by the BP oil spill in April, according to researchers.
A report released by scientists at Oregon State University found that cancer-causing oil compounds increased by 40 times between May and June of 2010 in the waters bordering Louisiana.
“It’s an incredibly huge jump in concentration in a natural environment,” Oregon State toxicology professor Kim Anderson, who led the study, told the Los Angeles Times.
Among the dangerous agents detected are carcinogens called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs.

I have no patience for impatient people. The chronically impatient like to waste their time and energy (and everyone else’s) on situations that are of absolutely no consequence. After being forced to wait in any line (restaurant, bank, airport, grocery store, etc.) for more than 90 seconds, these people become utterly unbearable. Unfortunately, you know them all too well. These jerks try very hard to ruin your day with their negative energy and petty concerns, as you’re just trying to go about your day in as pleasant a way as possible.
Impatient people are those idiots who simply cannot fathom why it might take five entire minutes for them to receive their latte, even though the reason for this unacceptable wrongdoing is obvious: They just ordered their coffee...

The next time a giant corporation practices gross negligence that results in a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (or anywhere else), we’ll be prepared. MIT’s Senseable City Lab has developed Seaswarm — a fleet of high-tech robots that talk via Wi-Fi and GPS, and eat and clean oil off the water’s surface. Then they purify the oil by pulling around a conveyor belt made of a reusable, oil-absorbing material. And poof, the water is back to its old self – we hope.via GOODPost from: BlissTreeMIT Develops Oil-Cleaning Robot Army, But Too Late for the Gulf (Source: Breastfeeding 1-2-3)

More than 50,000 tons of boon and other debris from the BP oil spill is being put in landfills or incinerators — and that’s only about 7% of the total waste that will end up in landfills, according to The Huffington Post. All the landfill sites meet EPA standards, but three have state environmental issues – like polluting local waters.
Local residents and environmental experts are worried about what the oil-covered trash will do to the groundwater in their areas, and nervous about future problems that could arise. And we’re worried for them.

Spike Lee’s new, follow-up documentary about the repercussions in the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Katrina, as well as this year’s BP oil spill starts screening this week, and environmentalist and activist Brad Pitt is doing interviews as part of the film. Pitt is asked if he thinks capital punishment would be suitable for those responsible for the oil spill, and he responds, “I was never for the death penalty before — I am willing to look at it again.”
Whoa, Brad! This flick should be called Death Wish X: The Oily Payback. But Spike Lee actually titled it: If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise (the follow-up to his 2006 HBO documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts). It’ll be shown in two parts tonight an...

If you just read about what happens to your body when you swim in oil-contaminated water, you should feel fired up about the horrible effects of the Gulf oil spill on our environment – and our health. We never thought we’d tell you to channel your rage into a gumbo, but… You should channel your rage into a gumbo: Gumbo for the Gulf, a project of Environment America, is a way to build awareness about the oil spill and raise funds to support families in the Gulf – and it’s actually fun.
If you sign up to throw a party, Environment America will provide recipes from the organization (furnished by New Orleans chefs John Besh and Susan Spicer) and information about the oil spill and how you can get involved. It’s up to you to make the gumbo and get your friends to make a ...

Taking a dip in the oil-contaminated Gulf could be scarier than Italian Vogue's Oil & Water fashion shoot.
There’s no question that the oil disaster in the Gulf will have long-term effects on the environment, but people are starting to wonder: What about the health effects of all that oil-contaminated water? From harming our seafood to raising the risk of cancer, everyone’s concerned with how the oil spill fallout will affect our health in years to come. So we asked Dr. Naheed Ali, author of Are You Fit to Live? and Diabetes and You: A Holistic Approach, about the medical and physical effects of swimming in oil-contaminated water.
There are serious and potential health hazards from swimming in oil-contaminated waters. (Shocking.) Here’s what you could expect to ha...

Pamela Anderson Adopts Pets From Gulf Region, So We Have to Like Her a Little

Remember those heartbreakingly adorable Gulf region pets that had to be given to shelters because their owners couldn’t afford to keep them? Well, Pamela Anderson is doing her part to raise awareness about the poochies and kitties still in need by traveling to the Gulf and adopting two pets of her own. PETA is working to organize adopt-a-thons to find good homes for the pets made homeless by the BP oil spill.
Dammit, now we have to like Pam Anderson. But just because we think she went overboard with the cosmetic surgeries doesn’t mean we think she’s a bad person. Same goes for all the celebs over 40 we’re going to try our best not to look like. Except for Mel Gibson. He actually is a bad person.

Remember localwashing? When a company pretends that it’s using local goods to create a product, but it’s really just trying to get you to buy crap? Greenwashing is similar, but instead of pretending to be local, companies fake eco-friendliness. And some of our favorite, most well-meaning celebrities just got played. Big time.
In the “Be The One” public service announcement promoting restoration in the Gulf of Mexico following the BP oil spill, celebrities including Sandra Bullock, Blake Lively, and Dave Matthews urged the public to sign a petition demanding government funding for clean-up efforts. But it turns out that the PSA was made by America’s Wetland Foundation, which is funded by Shell Oil –

photo: Thinkstock
In an uncharacteristic smart move, BP committed to buying a technology and ethanol plant in Jennings, Lousiana. The plant uses bagasse, the residue from sugar cane processing, to make ethanol, which then mixes with gasoline. The new CEO of BP Biofuels says that the purchase will help speed the delivery of a low carbon, low cost, sustainable biofuel.
Well, at least this is one step in the right direction after BP’s marathon debacle in the Gulf of Mexico. Could the (oily) tide be turning?

If you need something to occupy yourself today while BP is trying to put a new cap on the leaking oil well in the Gulf, we’ve got just the thing. It’s called Instant Oil Spill, and it’s an interactive site that brings the murky toxins of the oil spill right to your computer screen.
The site is brought to you by A Cleaner Future, a nonprofit that focuses on creating awareness about alternative and cleaner energy sources. We thought that adding a little oil spill to the BP website would be cathartic, and, while it was sort of fun in an ironic way to see the black goop fill their homepage, it just wasn’t all that satisfying.

We’re not big fans of dieting. But sometimes even just watching what you eat sucks. Nothing’s worse than the feeling you get when you want chocolate, but know you can’t have it. (Okay, the BP oil spill, earthquake in Haiti, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan might be worse.) With these tips to stay full while eating less, you may be able to treat yourself once in a while.
1. Eat protein for breakfast. Eating a lean protein at breakfast keeps you fuller than other nutrients, because your body takes more time to digest and absorb it. Try low-fat yogurt or egg whites. But not mixed — that would be gross.
2. Swallow some spuds. The starch in potatoes resists digestive enzymes, which means it takes longer for your body to break it down. Potat...

Earthship Biotecture is a company that builds 100% sustainable homes that deliver their own electricity, maintain temperature, use solar energy, gather and recycle their own water, and grow their own food. Uber-eco-friendly. Recently, the Earthship team took a trip down to Haiti to build a sustainable building for the victims of the January earthquake.
Their trip was a total success: They built a structure completely out of garbage (not kidding), and fed Haitians who helped with the construction. Plus, they have plans to go back in October to finish installing the heating, electric, water, and solar systems on the building. In the meantime, the participating Haitians have learned skills they need to build more sustainable structures like this one, which will create jobs and, of course, hou...

Hey, everyone — good news! Scientists have discovered three new species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Oh, wait — that Gulf of Mexico. Turns out, not only is the BP oil spill killing underwater species we already knew about, but it’s also eradicating species we didn’t even know existed. Another giant win for BP.
Next, perhaps scientists will discover a tribe (school?) of mermaids, who will declare war on us for decimating their watery home. Mermaids can breathe underwater – we’d definitely lose.

The corporation’s latest mistakes include trying to cover up washed-up oil by dumping more sand on the beach. Check out a visual tour of their latest scumbag move:

Who couldn’t use a cool ten mill? We wouldn’t mind it. That dough could be yours if you figure out an effective way to clean up the BP oil spill in the Gulf. It’s a pretty daunting task, but if the future of the oceans don’t motivate you, maybe this will:
The X Prize Foundation, a nonprofit that offers prizes to spur technological innovation, is offering the reward. Now if only they could figure out a way to persuade BP to actually accept some help with cleaning up this environmental disaster.

We obviously don’t want the tourism industries in Florida or anywhere else along the Gulf of Mexico to hurt any more than they already are hurting. But really – what kind of insane parents let their kids play in water that has oil in it? I’m not talking about the Gulf of Mexico as a whole, but when you can literally see the oil on the sand (let alone your children), it’s probably time to call it a day at the beach. We can assume that by this time, the whole world has heard about the spill, right? Residing under a rock seems like it’s the only viable excuse for letting your preschoolers swim in oil.

So far, it seems like no one’s really capitalizing on the BP oil spill in the Gulf. We haven’t seen any t-shirts or heard any #1 hits about oil – and if we did, we’d hope the proceeds would be going to those people and wildlife affected by the spill. That’s so gre–wait, what? Spirit Air is running ads that are exploiting the oil spill – and sexist to boot?
Spirit Air’s new campaign focuses on scantily-clad women lounging on beaches, all lubed up and enjoying the sun. The tagline reads, “Check out the oil on our beaches.” So tasteless.
Greenpeace, which has been doing some World Cup-related charity work in Africa, has released a PSA comparing the amount of trees cut down every two seconds to the size of a soccer (football) field. Apparently, the folks over at the Adweek blog, AdFreak, where we found the video, were beyond offended by this spot: ”What’s their point? No endangered species inhabits [sic] a football pitch, unless you count the U.S. national team.” (Did these morons watch today’s match against Algeria?) Greenpeace’s point is that there are a lot of trees being cut down all the time. It’s a convenient way to put the rate at which trees are being cut down in perspective, since most everyone’s watching the World Cup, and viewers can see just how enormous the fields are...

Today's To-Do List: Apologize to BP

photo from Reuters
Last week, after Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP for what he called the White House’s “shakedown” of the company, Republicans and Democrats alike couldn’t believe it. But you know what? Maybe there are some things for which we need to apologize to BP. ApologizeToBP.com is up and running for everyone to air the grievances that they’ve committed against BP. You can also use Twitter to show your remorse for the awful things you’ve done to BP with the hashtag #ImSorryBP.

Donating $10 toward the Gulf oil spill restoration efforts hardly seems like a tall order, but it’s especially easy to let go of your cash when you get a cool “peliCAN” t-shirt from Threadless in return. All proceeds from the shirts, designed by Frederik Wepener and Ross Zietz, go toward the Gulf Restoration Network (healthygulf.org), and they’re available for men and women. We say get one for yourself and a friend (or two). But that’s because we love pelicans.

Health journalist Andrew Schneider has a lengthy article on the testing methods being developed to detect contamination of fish, shrimp, and crab harvested from the Gulf. Scott Smullen of the NOAA maintains the effectiveness of training inspectors to declare food harvests safe by the (we kid you not) use of the whiff test – if it smells like oil it is contaminated and if it smells “okay” then it is safe to eat.
University of South Florida oceanographer Yonggang Liu and colleagues have reported huge deep water oil plumes from the BP oil spill drifting across the Gulf of Mexico that are likely to create kill zones and impact the food chain (especially larger fish) for years to come. Despite protestations by BP that most of the leaked oil is on the surface, Steven Murawski of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is confirming the presence of the plumes and the validity of the Liu’s data. You’ve probably stayed in some pretty seedy places in your lifetime. A Bates-esque motel off of the highway with roaches? Perhaps a gem in the middle of nowhere that reeked of B.O.? No matter how disgusting your travel accommodations have been, we guarantee you’ve never stayed anywhere as trashy as the eco-friendly Save the Beach Hotel in Europe.
This Rome hotel is made from 12,000 kilograms (about 2,645 pounds) of garbage that was collected from Europe’s beaches. It’s part of a campaign from an environmental group called Save the Beach, and it’s trying to give beach-goers a look at what their shores will soon look like if they don’t stop littering on them.

Recently, hair salons and nonprofit groups across the country (including Matter of Trust) have been collecting hair and fur to send to the Gulf Coast to help clean up the BP oil spill. Hair mats and booms are a natural, non-toxic way to absorb the oil that’s polluting the Gulf of Mexico. But BP has refused to try using the donated materials that are currently filling 19 warehouses.
And they haven’t just ignored the mats: BP sent out a press release saying that they were appreciative, but also told organizations to stop collecting and sending hair, because they weren’t going to use it. BP claims that the hair will sink, but there are ways of making it float. They’re also worried it’ll leave debris behind. Yes, we’re certain that hair is m...

It sounds like an aquatic sci-fi flick: Heroic robot fish lead distressed regular fish to safety. But this scenario could actually happen, thanks to Maurizio Porfiri, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He hopes that his remote control fish could lead helpless fish stuck in murky, oil-filled waters to safety (which would’ve come in handy in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the BP oil spill).
Apparently, schools of fish will “trust” and follow an impostor, as long as it’s silent and moves like a fish. Porfiri’s robots aren’t ready for action yet, but it’s a cool idea that could have many successful implementations in the future. Aside from an oil spill situation, robots could be used to guide birds to s...

It’s kind of insane that BP still hasn’t figured out a foolproof way to clean up the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico oil spill. And BP’s seemingly feeble attempts may be harming the environment even more. Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency told BP that they had 24 hours to decide on a less toxic form of chemical dispersants to try and break up the environmental disaster.
655,00o gallons of the extremely toxic dispersants that BP is using have now been distributed over the surface of the ocean and underwater. Federal officials are worried about the threat to the marine life in the Gulf of Mexico, since the use of dispersants to this degree is unprecedented.
Also, apparently BP is trying to limit how much journalists see of the spill. Hey, BP, what el...

Thanks to the idiots at BP, things aren’t looking so good these days for marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. Does this photo make you really, really mad? Check out one way to help by donating your hair (or your pet’s hair) to Matter of Trust, which will aid the oil spill cleanup efforts.

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and the same is true for your old split ends: Human hair and pet hair are being used to clean up and contain the BP oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico, and you can send in your unwanted hair to help out.
A Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based organization, is collecting human and pet hair clippings from individuals, salons, and professionals to use in their hair-filled buoys (pictured above), which apparently will soak up the toxic oil. We’re slightly skeeved by the hair sausage imagery, but cleaning up the Gulf is probably worth dealing with our gag reflex for a few moments.
Donating is easy: Just go to their website, tell them you’d like to donate, and they’ll email you the address of th...
