Easy case.
Seen it a hundred times.
Old guy (or gal).
Comes into ER.
Found “down.”
“Hey doc, looks like his hearts goin’ slow. I think he (or she) needs a pacer.”
“On any meds that might do this?”
“Nah.”
“How’s his (her) potassium?”
“4.3, normal.”
And like lots of times, you head in. Glad you can help. Call-team’s on their way, thanks to you. Called the device rep to make sure they can be there just in case, too. Cool as a cucumber. Nothin’ to it. Been here, done this.
You arrive to a guy (or gal) that looks pretty good. Maybe has one or two medical problems. Heart rate’s better thanks to the atropine and the fluids they gave him (her) on arrival. The intraosseus line in the tibia is impre...

“Whatever your views on climate change, you ought to find it unsettling that, here and elsewhere, most of the actual ‘law’ in this country is crafted by unelected executive-branch bureaucrats.”
“The Framers’ Constitution freed us, to make our own individual choices.”
“The world’s dictators are fleeing for their lives, all because of Secretary Clinton’s efforts.”
“Total spending jumped by almost $2 trillion during the Bush-Obama spending binge, so a $39 billion cut is almost too small to mention.”
The Founders would agree with the idea that “it should be hard to get into wars and easy to leave them“:

Left bundle branch blocks (LBBB) are a common finding on ECG’s particularly in the ER and ICU. New onset of a LBBB can herald underlying ischemia or infarct. Some ECG findings indicative of LBBB are:
1. QRS wave greater than 0.12 sec
2. Broad R wave in leads I, V5, and/or V6
3. Absence of Q wave in leads I, V5, and/or V6
4. ST segment depressions in leads V4, V5, and/or V6
5. Delayed onset of R wave peak time in leads V5 and V6 (Source: Inside Surgery)

Opponents of science often argue that science could be wrong. “Science can’t explain everything,” is one such popular claim by those who attack science.
Recently, a friend and I were discussing some new psychology research when he asked, “Are there any definites in psychology?” I answered by telling him there are no definites in psychology or any other branch of science.
Some people make the erroneous assumption that science claims certainty, when in fact, science makes no such claims. Scientific knowledge is tentative, and the tentative nature of science is one of its strong points. Science, unlike faith-based belief, accepts the preponderance of evidence and changes its stance if the evidence warrants.
Science takes us where the evidence leads.

Health reform is a process, not an outcome. The health care industry needs to treat Phase II of health reform—–implementation by the Executive Branch—with the same focus and zeal as they did with Phase I—deliberation and passage by the Legislative Branch. It may not be as sexy as Capitol Hill but industry participation in shaping implementation through the Executive Branch could have an even greater impact for industry efforts. Phase II is when the rubber of ‘‘the law’’ meets the road of ‘‘the real world.’’ We are one month into implementation so now is the t...

As a former trauma surgeon in West Virginia, this author has noted with sadness the death of twenty five miners in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine in Boone County, West Virginia. Dozens more are reported to be seriously injured.
West Virginia coal miners are some of the toughest people on earth. Despite advances in mine safety, it is still incredibly dirty, difficult and dangerous work.
Mine injuries generally fall into one of four categories – blast injuries, crush injuries, asphyxiation, and drowning.

The traumatic injury to internal organs in mining blast injuries is more severe than other situations where blast injury occurs (refineries, battlefied) because the concussive force is multiplied by the small space of the mine shafts, unlike in open terrain wh...

To humans—
An identified emerging threat to mankind (in the United States at least) is the smallest bacteria, Mycoplasma genitalium. It is sexually transmitted.
According to the University of Texas Medical Branch‘s (UTMB) Medical Discovery News, infection rate is up to 4% among young adults.

To humans’ pockets—
Chilly Saturday mornings such as today makes for a better appreciation of a warm cup of coffee and re-swooning over the beautiful new machine from Steve Jobs’ garage of translated technology. I have read the bashing, it doesn’t matter.
It still passes as a looming (and welcome?) threat to everyone’s pockets.

If only all threats have benefits… (Source: the story of healing)

By Benjamin H. FriedmanTerrorists are named after an emotion for a reason. They use violence to produce widespread fear for a political purpose. The number of those they kill or injure will always be a small fraction of those they frighten. This creates problems for leaders, and even analysts, when they talk publicly about terrorism. On one hand, leaders need to convince the public that they are on the case in protecting them, or else they won’t be leaders for long. On the other hand, good leaders try to minimize unwarranted fear.
One reason is that we shouldn’t give terrorists what they want. Another is that fear is a real social harm, particularly when it is exaggerated. Stress from fear harms health. It causes bad decisions. For example, if people avoid flying and drive inst...

“Sarah is electrifying our party,” Mitt is telling a Fox News anchor…
Sarah definitely has the star quality about her, the sheer charisma, that that other unknown, Dan Quayle, did not. The Executive Branch of our government needs people in it that are leaders above all. That’s the opposite of what W has been doing lately: love him or hate him, the man isn’t a leader. (Source: white pebble)

Yep..right there at the North Carolina zoo in Asheboro. I guess that explains the lack of cleanliness on the glass that separated us. The moms at the zoo that day were asked by their kids what was happening and they replied that the baboon was "playing with the other baboon" before rushing their kids on to the next exhibit. It would seem that President Bush has prevented Scooter Libby from playing with other inmates to pay for this administrations crimes against the nation. It is very demoralizing to me to know that power and privilege can flaunt themselves so very openly, as if the powerful and priveleged were baboons forcing public blowjobs on average Americans...

I see no recourse to extricate the US from the tyranny of this administration short of impeachment of both the President and the Vice President.
Filed under: Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Celebrity cancer diagnosis, PoliticsFred Thompson, actor and former United States Senator from Tennessee, made the announcement today that he was diagnosed with lymphoma a few years ago and now is in remission.
