By Michael F. CannonIt's good news for residents of Washington, D.C., that Wal-Mart is planning on opening four stores in the District. Yet Washington Post columnist Robert McCartney reports today on one curious source of opposition:
"There'll probably be a lot of shoplifting going on. They'll need a lot of security," Terriea Sutton, 35, said.
Brenda Speaks, a Ward 4 ANC commissioner, actually urged blocking construction of the planned store in her ward at Georgia and Missouri avenues NW partly because of that risk. Addressing a small, anti-Wal-Mart rally at City Hall on Monday, Speaks said young people would get criminal records when they couldn't resist the temptation to steal.
Of course, that's a rationale for banning all stores, not just Wal-Mart. Perhaps we should isolate these you...

I keep listening to this song which takes me back to when I was in Paris having one of those moments where I thought to myself, “Take this in man, cause it’s one of those special moments when things just couldn’t be more special and perfect.”
The reason to why I’m doing this is not exactly to relive past moments. Presently I feel as if life is taking some interesting and exciting directions. So much so that these days have been about ten years in the making.
I kid you not.
The more I put myself out there on the path that is truest to me, the more people and opportunities come into my life. It’s been happening more and more.
On April 21st, I will arrive at my third anniversary from my slip in Mexico that lead to my crowning of “Miss Don Woods 2007,” the CAMH GLBT rehab progr...

The Left Brain raises an eyebrow:
One or the maxims of the Beauty Brains is that “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.” It looks to me like the Universal Brow Definer fits that description.
Background on Universal Brow Definer
This product is an eyebrow colorant in pencil form and consists of waxes, oils, fatty alcohols, talc, and iron oxide colorants. (The full ingredient list is available on their website.) These are standard ingredients commonly used in similar products, however, the manufacturer makes several claims about this product that are rather incredulous.

We’ve talked about Brenda Novak here before during our “Putting a Face on Diabetes” segment. Brenda’s son is diabetic and for five years she has worked tirelessly to raise money for a cure. She’s done an amazing job!

Each year she has an online auction with proceeds going to diabetes research. The auction offers a host of things such as vacation packages, books, online classes… really, just about everything you could imagine. There is something for everyone.
This year, she raised a whopping $270,611! In five years of fundraising, she has raised $762,298. That figure just amazes me. Never underestimate what you can do! Congrats to Brenda for her amazing effort!

We’ve talked with Brenda Novak before here at Blisstree. She’s a very successful author and diabetes advocate, who each year raises thousands of dollars for diabetes research. In just a few short years she has managed to raise a half a million dollars!

She’s truly an inspiration. Novak’s son is diabetic, and she has created an online auction that is easy to maneuver and use. I’ve poked around this site myself, and she has some fabulous prizes. She even has a few “one of a kind” experiences. There is truly something for everyone.
The auction ends at the end of this month, so I encourage everyone so log on and find something fabulous for themselves! You’ll get something fabulous for yourself and help to find a cure for diabetes in the process.

As I’ve mentioned before, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in my early 20s. It was hard enough getting it then. I can’t imagine getting it as a child. The shots, food restrictions, and constant monitoring is a difficult thing for children and their families. That’s why research and funding is needed until there is a cure.
To that end, I have another great interview in the Putting a Face on Diabetes series. I’m always amazed at people that get involved. It doesn’t matter how they are involved, to me doing something is so much better than feeling helpless or complaining. To that end, I came across an online diabetes fundraiser a few years ago that was put on by Brenda Novak, an author whose son has diabetes. I was so impressed by her efforts (and wait until ...

Donna Sparks was the winner of the recent drawing for a copy of Finding the JOY in Alzheimer’s by Brenda Avadian, author and editor. Adding value to the drawing was Brenda’s offer to answer a question from the winner.
Here is what Donna asked:

On your website, The Caregivers Voice, you talk about all the decisions caregivers have to make (medical, legal, ethical, etc.), and you share some of your concerns about whether or not the decisions you made for your father were “right” and “what he would want.” What is the one decision you struggled the most with, and in hindsight do you wish you had made a different decision or do you think it was the “right” decision?

Brenda’s answer:

Thanks, everyone, for visiting Alzheimer’s Notes and participating in the drawing for Finding the Joy in Alzheimer’s. The random drawing has taken place…..and the winner is…..Donna Sparks.
Congratulations, Donna! Your copy of Finding the Joy in Alzheimer’s will be on its way.
Also, when Brenda Avadian, editor of the book, answers Donna’s question (the value added part of the contest), I shall publish that on the blog.
I’d asked those who commented to mention their connection to Alzheimer’s. Donna said: I’m Alicia’s mom, and I was a caregiver to both my grandmother and my mother. Many women in my family have had Alzheimer’s and I’m afraid that my sister or I will have it one day.

CONCLUSIONS: "Intellectually demanding work was associated with greater benefit to cognitive performance in later life independent of related factors like education and intelligence. The fact that individuals with lower intellectual aptitude demonstrated a stronger positive association between work and higher cognitive performance during retirement suggests that behavior may enhance intellectual reserve, perhaps even years after peak intellectual activity."
This is consistent with the Cognitive Reserve theory we discussed in the interview with neuroscientist Yaakov Stern:
- AF (Alvaro Fernandez): OK, so our goal is to build that Reserve of neurons, synapses, and skills. How can we do that? What defines "mentally stimulating activities" or good "brain exercise&quot...

Poll Results - Would You Write About Alzheimer’s?

The results from my latest poll on Alzheimer’s Notes indicates that a wide majority of people would write about their experiences as an Alzheimer’s caregiver for a family member. Eighty-six percent responded that they would; no one said no; no one voted that they’d write if it could be done anonymously; Fourteen percent were undecided.
More caregivers and family members have become more open about this disease as it affects a family member or close friend. They are willing to share and to seek information. More resources have become available.
Why write? I think my next poll will ask some questions on this topic. So be thinking about it and vote, as well as leaving comments.

So many people consider caring for an Alzheimer’s patient a hopeless situation, one filled with saddness and dispair. Frequently whatever is written or filmed contains the aura of hopelessness.
I’m glad there’s an increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s and it’s devastation to family members, victims, and society. However, I like people to realize that, since we can’t, at this point in time, stop or ignore Alzheimer’s, it’s possible to find joy…both for the patient and yourself.
“Joy!” you say. “She’s nuts!”
It was frustrating, it was tiring, it was often sad caring for Mother and Auntie. However, we did experience laughter and joy. We all learned to look beyond the tears to the trumphs, beyond t...
