The XX Percent Solution: Pfizer To Cut More Jobs

In the wake of its $68 billion acquisition of Wyeth last year, Pfizer set about cutting costs that included eliminating 15 percent, or 19,425 jobs from a combined workforce of roughly 129,500 people. We should note, however, that this target included positions Pfizer planned to eliminate before the deal closed in October 2009.
As of the end of the third quarter, Pfizer had nearly reached its goal. By then, the drugmaker employed about 111,500 people, which means there was a drop of 18,000 jobs, or 14 percent of the workforce just before the acquisition. This decline includes 9,200 jobs from the primary care sales force, manufacturing plants, R&D programs and administrative offices.
Now, though, Pfizer is planning still more cuts. In its quarterly filing with the US Securities and Exc...

A brief respite in the job action undertaken by AstraZeneca workers at two UK sites has come to an end after talks about a proposed pension freeze went nowhere this week, The Manchester Evening News writes. Just two weeks ago, the GMB union agreed to suspend its series of one-day strikes and a ban on overtime in hopes of reach an accord (back story).
But Allan Black, GMB’s national officer, says the drugmaker offered nothing new during three meetings. “It’s a great shame, but we have made the decision to reinstate the strikes,” he tells the paper. “The company has said nothing new over the series of meetings. There has been no compromise over the pensions.
“They said they were trying to get a mandate from the board in America to resolve the dispute, but ...

How is this for poor timing? Just as walkouts get under way at the AstraZeneca site in Macclesfield, UK, over plans to end contributions to a defined benefit pension plan (back story), there is the revelation that the pension for AstraZeneca ceo David Brennan has grown by 50 percent in the past two years and will now provide him approximately $1.4 million annually, according to The Manchester Evening News.
“It is particularly shocking that, at the very time when this hugely profitable company is attacking GMB members’ pensions, its chief executive, David Brennan, has reached third in the UK league of the top bosses’ pension entitlements,” Paul Kenny, general secretary of the GMB union, tells the paper. “When he retires based on today’s figures, Mr. Brennan will ...

Something special planned? While you ponder, here are a few items to help with those last-minute planning sessions today. Whatever the weekend brings, we hope you enjoy. See you soon…

By Jim HarperJohn Brennan, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, made the rounds of the Sunday political shows this weekend. He’ll be reviewing the attempted bombing of Northwest flight 253 for the president.
His appearance on ABC’s This Week program revealed his struggle with the limitations on data mining for counterterrorism purposes. His interviewer, Terry Moran, betrayed even less awareness of the challenge. Their conversation is revealing:

By Jim HarperWhite House ethics counsel Norm Eisen’s conclusion that John Brennan should participate in the reviews of the attempted bombing of Northwest flight 253 is interesting.
Currently serving as assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, Brennan formerly worked at the Analysis Corp., a contractor that helped develop the watch-list system, one of many security measures that did not prevent the attacker from boarding a flight into the United States.

AstraZeneca Is ‘More Sensitive’ About Illegal Marketing

All those big fines are prompting some drugmakers to say they’ve found religion. For instance, Pfizer ceo Jeff Kindler recently gave a speech about corporate trust (watch it here). Now, AstraZeneca’s Dave Brennan confesses that his company is “more sensitive than we’ve ever been” about preventing illegal promotion of their drugs ever since it paid a $520 million to settle a US probe marketing of its Seroqeul schizophrenia med.
Off-label marketing has become “a much bigger issue in the last few years as a result of the government’s position on this,” he tells The Wall Street Journal. “If you go back ten years in this industry, this was not an issue. I mean, we trained our people not to promote off-label…so it’s always been se...

AstraZeneca CEO To Be Grilled On Seroquel Risks

David Brennan will be deposed today regarding allegations the drugmaker hid the risk that its Seroquel antipsychotic can cause diabetes and is expected to answer questions in London from attorneys representing thousands of plaintiffs across the US, The Delaware News-Journal reports.
“A lot of very good people have been severely injured for the rest of their life because of the conduct of this company and the effect of this drug,” Paul Pennock of Weitz & Luxenberg, a New York law firm handling about 2,500 Seroquel cases in federal and state courts, tells the paper. AZ faces 8,440 personal injury lawsuits from more than 12,000 plaintiffs over Seroquel.

The lawsuits include a consolidated case in federal court in Florida, for which Brennan is giving his deposition, as well a...

AstraZeneca CEO Got A 19 Percent Pay Cut

Is your retirement fund evaporating with the stock market plunge? Are oil prices causing you to wear more sweaters? Well, consider David Brennan. He had to stomach a drop in compensation to just $4.3 million last year, thanks to a smaller bonus and fewer reimbursements for relocation costs, according to AstraZeneca’s annual report (please see page 106).
The drugmaker paid Brennan nearly $2 million in salary, compared with almost $1.9 million in 2006, and his bonus fell to about $2 million from $2.17 million. Meanwhile, his reimbursements tumbled to $263,000 from $1.34 million, although that is still a great deal. The 54-year-old American, who moved from the US to AZ headquarters in London when he became ceo in January 2006, must be carting an awful lot of possessions across the pond...

Why Is AstraZeneca’s Brennan Influential In The UK?

The media loves to create lists because these often get people talking, even without any legitimate purpose. And so The Telegraph, one of the big UK daily newspapers, has compiled a ranking of the most influential Americans in the UK. The top 50 includes a wide variety of people - actor Kevin Spacey; Madonna; Joel Glazer, who runs the Manchester United Football Club; Marjorie Scardino, who heads Pearson, owner of The Financial Times and other media, and author Bill Bryson.
Showing up at No. 11 is AZ’s ceo Dave Brennan, whose biography is given the de rigeur thumbnail biographical sketch. The affable Brennan is chosen, of course, because AZ is one of the biggest drugmakers and he’s done the reverse of what Glaxo’s JP Garnier has done - setting up shop in the UK as opposed ...

AstraZeneca Poised To Hire Outsider As CFO

If Jeff Kindler can do it, Dave Brennan can do it. The AstraZeneca ceo is reportedly poised to hire an outsider as cfo in hopes of finding someone with “fresh management ideas,” The Financial Times writes. Pfizer, you may recall, recently hired a veteran cfo of the shrinking telecom wars, Frank D’Amelio, as cfo in a clear nod to the need for a sharpened pencil who can simultaneously cut fat with one hand while rubbing Wall Street’s back with the other.
And AstraZeneca finds itself in a similar position - recently lab failures, a quick need for new meds and big cutbacks. So Brennan et al have been working with SpencerStuart, the brand-name headhunting firm, to find candidates beyond the wide world of pharma. AstraZeneca executives have conducted several interviews wi...
