Newt Tries to Out-Romney Romney, Endorses ‘Public Option’ in Medicare

By Michael F. CannonIn 1995, shortly after becoming Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich mulled a radical overhaul of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As he put it to a room full of health insurers, “Maybe we’ll take out FDA.”
What made Newt likable to advocates of freedom is sadly no longer part of his schtick. Here’s how Andrew Stiles reports on Newt’s appearance on Meet the Press yesterday:
“I don’t think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering,” he said when asked about [House Budget Committee chairman Paul] Ryan’s [R-WI] plan to transition to a “premium support” model for Medicare. “I don’t think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society...

Despairingly, he looked at her, shook his head, and asked, “Whatever happened to us? We don’t laugh any more; we used to always be laughing!”
With contemptuous expression and voice, she retorted, “Yes, but not at the same time.”
This one line from a classic moment of the British sitcom Fawlty Towers illuminated Basil and Sybil Fawlty’s entire relationship.
Is a happy, long-lasting marriage really still possible? Well, I suppose we’ll find out in fifty years. Of course, if you’re being abused and bullied, your spouse has defaulted on ‘the deal’ (remember ‘to love and to cherish’?); no one should stay in an abusive marriage. But our ‘throw away society’ sometimes causes p...

Marriage Economics: Would You Sell Tickets to Your Wedding?

Weddings can be loads of fun, but they can also cost loads of money, forcing some couples to shorten their guest list and remove their +1 invitation extensions. Slate’s Daniel Engber argues that telling guests not to bring an escort is bad practice, ruining the fun for guests and defeating the purpose of a good wedding. So what does he suggest to keep the price of the party affordable for bride and groom? Selling tickets to your wedding.
It sounds a little weird, but the concept of telling guests that they can bring a +1 if they’ll help cover the costs actually makes some sense. Engber offers that, instead of buying wedding gifts, pitching in to cover the costs of making the wedding open to dates and friends is a reasonable exchange, and if put kindly, shouldn’t be offens...

Bridal Diapers? Do NOT Say: "I Do"

For his sake, we're hoping she doesn't need a diaper. Photo: Thinkstock
We’ve heard of brides enlisting a bridesmaid or two (or four) to help her use the bathroom when she’s all decked out on her big day. But bridal diapers? Marie Claire reported that some bridal shops actually sell bridal diapers so the bride doesn’t have to be bothered to even try to pee while wearing her wedding gown.
This ranks pretty high on our list of truly disgusting things. First of all, you’re going to smell like piss (we hope not #2!) during your first dance as husband and wife. Brides are supposed to smell like butterflies and daffodils, or at least some kind of fresh scent. And when exactly would be a good time to wet your pants – during your wedding vows or the chicken dance?...

If Gary welcoming his email bride, Olga, to his Las Vegas apartment doesn’t give you the creeps, we don’t know what will. According to the National Geographic Channel’s “Inside” show, International Marriage Brokers result in as many as 16,000 unions every year.

As spring arrives (at least in the U.S.), caregivers may be looking for a change of pace. This often means finding something new to do at home with their Alzheimer’s family member or by themselves as they have a spare moment.
Arts and crafts often can furnish that break from the routine and frustration. Check out this week’s offerings of the Arts Bloggers, at the Round-up of the Arts Bloggers as Spring Arrives.
What are you doing for springtime?

Filed under: All CancersIn addition to a writer, I'm a photographer too and I'm always scouring the Internet for good photos. I found this photo essay a while back and have been haunted by it ever since. I visit it every few months or so but not too often because it's so bittersweet, I can hardly handle looking at it. It's the story of Katie Kirkpatrick, a young woman whose body was ravished with cancer by the time her intended wedding day started getting close. Knowing it would probably be the last celebration of her life, she decided to go ahead with the wedding and marry her high school sweetheart, Nick Godwin. Weak, frighteningly thin, in constant overwhelming pain and in need of constant medical attention, she walked down the aisle, professed her undying devotion to the love of her li...
