Elan Execs Fly Pricey Private Jet To Fire Workers

How much does it cost to fire 130 workers? Well, if you belong to the Elan executive team, the tab could run $100,000, which could be used to pay a salary for, say, a scientist. But that apparently did not stop a handful of Elan execs, who flew to New York from San Francisco on a private jet to fire 130 employees, or 10 percent of its workforce, in a bid to save…money.
This move comes after a recent brawl with angry investors and dissident directors over alleged conflicts of interest among some Elan board members and execs, as well as out-of-control expenses related, in part, to the use of private jets that have been used to fly between the drugmaker’s Irish headquarters and operations in New York and the San Francisco Bay area (see this).
As noted by Reuters, which reported t...

5 Tips for Eating Healthy Through the Holidays

If you are like me, you will be spending 90 percent of your energy from today until January 1 repeating the words “choose the apple … choose the apple” because you know what processed flour and sugar does to your limbic system. It’s not pretty. Which is why I asked Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., author of Eat Your Way to Happiness, to share with us some tips for healthy eating during the holidays. Here she is!
* * *
The holidays are a time of tradition and ritual, the time spent with loved ones, the feelings of connectedness, the memories, the giving, the celebration of the human spirit makes this time of year magical.
The key is to preserve the tradition and avoid the binge. This is the season to splurge — not on endless trays of fudge and cookies, but rather ...

Is it about Obama being a turban-headed Muslim terrorist? Is it about Palin’s $150,000 wardrobe that ostensibly will go to charity afterwards? Is it about McCain’s gorilla-rape joke? No, no, it’s none of these silly, misguided attack ads. This “my friends” is about a Palin impersonator shilling for a CHINESE BUFFET RESTAURANT:

What is not evident in the video above is the fact that, like many buffets of this caliber, it’s mostly full of grease-laden crap bearing no resemblance to fresh, bright Chinese food of any kind. It’s so catering to the fried-chicken crowd that it even sports a drive-through. I kid you not. With the commercial and the food, clever gimmicks and bad substitutes go hand-in-hand. And there is no lack of people willing to ...

Your Brain on Recession

Billionaire investor Warren Buffet just reported that the US is already well into recession. Whether you believe Buffet’s alarming claim or not … human brains are being wooed into recession’s depressed slumps daily. How so? Five recent facts about your business brain on recession may surprise you: 1. Saving goes against your brain’s desire for instant gratification. Research shows "When our emotions are charged, we have a hard time waiting for a reward," says Carnegie Mellon University's George Loewenstein, one of the first study's authors. Even the chance of getting a slightly bigger reward tomorrow doesn't have the same stimulating effect on your brain as a gain today does.”2. The brain responds favorably to pricy items. Researche...
