It’s not often an author of a publication discussed on this blogs delivers a comment. You can also read the comment in this recent blog post here: Beyond Bullet Points in Medical Education.
As mentioned in my blog post it’s probably not only the design of the slides but mostly the educational instructions such as building on the knowledge the students already have and encourage the students to prepare for the lecture. This will enable the lecture to focus more on new things they should learn. All these arguments are all more or less good educational practice. Moreover, from my own experience designing and making slides without a lot of bullet points (text) often leads to more educational slides. In order not to get bored myself by the slides and content of the lecture, ...

Computers once again are proving not to be the plug-and-play-panacea they've been made out to be in the complex world of medicine. The Magic Bullet Theory of IT-Enabled Transformation once again bites the dust in the real world of medicine:Errors Occur in 12% of Electronic Drug Prescriptions Matching HandwrittenBloombergBy Michelle Fay CortezJun 29, 2011As many as 12 percent of the drug prescriptions sent electronically to pharmacies contain errors, a rate that matches handwritten orders for medicine from physicians, researchers said.An analysis of 3,850 computer-generated prescriptions written over a four-week period found 452 contained errors, including 163 that could harm the patient, according to a report published today in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. ...

Maybe you read the other day in The New York Times that the pharmaceutical industry has a problem. Big blockbuster drugs like Lipitor are going off patent and the industry leaders don’t have new blockbusters showing promise to replace them. So the big companies search for little companies with new discoveries and they consider buying them. Industry observers think the days of $5 billion-a-year drugs to lower cholesterol or control diabetes may be past for awhile, and the companies will have smaller hits with new compounds for autoimmune conditions and cancer.
When I saw my oncologist for a checkup yesterday — the news was good — we chatted about the article and the trend toward “niche science.” We welcomed it. We didn’t think — from our perspective — the wor...

Dr. Elena Bodnar won an Ignoble (aka Stupid) Award for her invention of a bra that can be used for a dust mask for just $29.95. The fibers on the cups might hold back large dust particles but they are not woven tight enough to prevent bacteria, colds, or the bird flu as many foolishly hoped. And then you have to share with some other fool? No thanks!
Bras can be quite utilitarian however, and have been around for over 103 years now! Thanks Italy!

In the spirit of Halloween, I thought you’d all appreciate some vampire talk. In her new book, “Emotional Freedom,” UCLA psychiatrist Judith Orloff identifies five kinds of vampires that are lurking around and can zap our energy if we’re not careful. Here is an excerpt adapted from her book.
Emotional vampires are lurking everywhere and wear many different disguises–from needy relatives to workplace bullies. Whether they do so intentionally or not, these people can make us feel overwhelmed, depressed, defensive, angry, and wiped out.
Without the self-defense strategies to fend them off, victims of emotional vampires sometimes develop unhealthy behaviors and symptoms, such as overeating, isolating, mood swings, or feeling fatigued.
Here are five types of emotio...

I survived a head-on collision.
Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but I wanted to get your attention. Although I indeed was involved in a minor, fender-bender type of head-on collision, I was stopped at the time and the car that hit me was going about 3 or 4 mph. The other driver, distracted by trying to do something on her cell phone, made a right-hand turn very wide, right into my lane as I was coming out of the side street she was turning in to.
She was an older woman and looked very much like someone’s grandmother. Impeccably dressed for summer in Newburyport fashion, she was driving a Volvo station wagon. After she hit me, it took a full 2 or 3 seconds for what she had just done to register on her face. It felt like time stood still during the entire 10 seconds of the accident...

Obama’s Recycled Moderate-Speed Rail Plan

The Obama administration believes in recycling, as shown by the so-called high-speed rail plan it announced last week. Below is a map of the plan, and below that is a map of the Federal Railroad Administration’s 2005 high-speed rail plan. As you can see, the proposed routes are identical. (The grey lines on the first map represent conventional Amtrak routes.)

Of course, this is a time-honored practice. Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway System was really the Bureau of Public Roads’ Interregional Highway System. There is no doubt that the Federal Railroad Administration is thrilled that Obama has adopted its plan.
Yet there are several problems with Obama’s plan. First, it is important to understand that most of Obama’s plan is not bullet trains or TGVs. Instea...

There has been a recurrent theme in your comments to me over the years. That theme is that most of you have pets you love. When life becomes an uphill battle due to chronic pain, many of us seek solace and companionship with our pets. They offer unqualified love, comfort and understanding. They keep us moving whether we feel like it or not.
For many of us, our love of animals started in the movie theater, gazing up at the screen, our fingers sticky from Milk Duds and buttered popcorn. For others of us, our families always had pets and we grew up with them; loving them, frolicking with them and snuggling with them. Some of us are old enough to remember Roy Rogers and Dale Evans galloping across the screen on Trigger with Bullet chasing along beside. Poor old Trigger, may he rest in peace,...

I love Pizza Hut pizzas. My favorite pie is their thin and crispy Pepperoni Lover's, but when I'm feeling a bit rebellious, I sometimes take a walk on the wild side and order a supreme. I enjoy their pan pizza too, and I've even been known to scarf down a few of their wings. I have wistful memories of the discontinued P'Zone. Not a week goes by that I don't have a large order delivered for the family, and twice a week is not unheard of. When I buy pizzas for the ER, it's a safe bet that I'm calling the Hut as well. I'm a loyal fan, forsaking all other pizza delivery restaurants for over 20 years. But I can assure you that if Pizza Hut eventually fires James William Spiers III for defending himself against an armed robber, I will join Iowa State Senator Brad Zaun, and I will never order anothe...

Let's imagine that, hypothetically, you were an individual of Hispanic descent who spoke not a word of English, and you suffered a horrible injury in Mexico which led to a stay of several weeks in a Mexican hospital. You would never walk nor recover the ability to care for yourself ever again. You would need to be fed, suctioned, and turned in your bed every 2 hours for the rest of your life. You would probably need several more expensive procedures over the next few weeks, but your current condition had been fairly well stabilized.Fortunately for you, your family was able to scrape up the money for an aeromedical flight to the US, and somehow they were able to produce some sort of proof of citizenship that enabled your entry into this country.
Is there a scientist in your laboratory (or elsewhere) you'd like to wipe out? Perhaps you know a crackpot Computer “scientist”. Or an Arrogant Physicist? Meddling mathematician maybe? Stubborn statistician? Bonkers Biologist? Kooky Chemist? You could try Nerd Sniping them, as demonstrated by Randall Munroe over at the University of XKCD.

Allergic to Everything

For some reason, patients with numerous allergies to medications seem to be predominantly female. Are women really more likely to have allergic reactions to medications than men, or are they simply more likely to receive a greater variety of medications over time and thus discover that they are allergic to them? Or are women just more likely to complain about subtle adverse reactions than men? Is guano somehow involved?
Still unknown but not so significant

Filed under: Breast Cancer, Prevention, Cancer SurvivorsThe doctor who read my mammogram and ultrasound results today is the same doctor who detected in my recent MRI something of unknown significance. Today, the unknown remains. But the significance is not so significant. This doctor saw an unusual pattern of tissue in my right breast when she viewed my Friday MRI results, some sort of enhancement she didn't see in the left breast or on the MRI I had a year ago. But today's mammogram looked good and today's ultrasound did too. So I guess if three different imaging tests don't turn up anything truly suspicious and there doesn't appear to be anything to biopsy, then all is well. For now.All that must be determined now is when I will report back for more screening to chart the state of the de...
