This study’s findings seem to indicate that exposure to sexual or erotic stimuli can create a psychological environment conducive to relationship-oriented behaviors. There were no gender differences observed in the study related to sexual priming, and only the subliminal, not the supraliminal, stimuli had an effect on sexual priming. (The researchers believe this is because “subliminal exposure bypasses conscious beliefs and attitudes about sexuality and socially appropriate reactions to sexual stimuli.”)
These studies were conducted on university students, however, who may not behave or have the same relationship or sexual motivations one has later in adulthood. And the situations were artificial, lab-created experiments with much of the data coming from simple self-rep...

Even if there are still many people who’d blankly stare at the mention of the word “blog”, it is undeniable that the blogging phenomenon has pervaded the consciousness of the average people, most especially through traditional media. Newspapers like Manila Bulletin and online information websites like Blog Addicts of You have featured bloggers and their works. And certainly, some journalists have also become bloggers. It seemed that traditional media have accepted and acknowledged the value of blogging in this Information Age.
Or maybe not. Maybe traditional media is in it for a love-and-hate relationship with blogging.
In several news episodes, mostly touching on the Brian Gorrell phenomenon, reporters often cautioned about readily believing information that can be found...

Frank L. Schmidt, a respected professor and researcher at the University of Iowa, gave a talk at the Association for Psychological Science’s 20th convention on Saturday about how scientific data can lie. Yes, that’s right, empirical data — even that published in respected, peer-reviewed journals — regularly do not tell the truth.
Schmidt’s talk was well-attended in one of the largest ballrooms at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Chicago where the convention is being held. Although an uneven presentation, Schmidt’s main points came across.
One of which is that the naive interpretation of multiple datasets is often likely to be the most correct — Occam’s razor (”the simplest solution is usually the best answer”). Schmidt claims t...

I’m enjoying a little sunshine and fresh air in Chicago this weekend, attending (and presenting at) the Association for Psychological Science’s 20th annual convention. I love Chicago – it’s one of America’s great cities and I believe everyone should have a chance to visit it in their lifetime.
However, as I sifted through the program, I noticed that literally half the dictionary-sized program was taken up by brief summaries (or abstracts) of what are called “posters.” Posters in convention parlance means a paper, usually a small study, that is most often conducted by a student (college or graduate). Poster sessions get their name from the fact that the student hangs the results of their paper (think something akin to a Powerpoint presentation, printed...
