Anoka-Hennepin “Battleground” is Government Schooling in Microcosm

By Neal McCluskeyThe Star-Tribune has a telling article about the Anoka-Hennepin school district, Minnesota’s largest and, after a recent string of suicides, the subject of a lawsuit and federal investigation over its handling of sexual orientation-based bullying. What led to the suicides and how the district dealt with bullying remain open questions, but in the absence of concrete evidence on those matters, perhaps nothing nails Anoka-Hennepin’s root problem as squarely as this article subhead: “Diverse and large.”
Anoka-Hennepin, in other words, appears to be the nation in microcosm, and the firestorm enveloping it sadly but starkly illustrates the destructiveness of forcing diverse people to support a single system of government schools.

Last week, while taking a break from work, I found myself reading through a friend’s personal blog. While everything was well written, and while the author herself did a careful job remaining anonymous to most of her readers, I couldn’t help but cringe at some of the stuff she was writing about. Personal stuff. Stuff that, once it’s out there, you just can’t take back.
Part of my cringing was due to the fact that about a year ago, I was right there with her. I’ve had a personal blog for years, and it used to be the one place where I could completely dump my emotions. A creative writer who has to work (on non-creative writing) quite a lot to pay the bills, I don’t always get to spend the hours a day I’d like to on my own pieces — so whenever I...

The Internet Can Save Lives
Dan Savage in an interview about the highly successful It Gets Better suicide prevention campaign, explaining why the campaign is so effective and innovative in the media ecology. Traditionally LGBT youth have been misinformed by stigma campaigns that focus solely on school bullying, but Dan points out that often bullying comes from parents and churches as well. Because of homophobic fears about gay adults recruiting youth, advocates had been unable to mentor directly by speaking in schools, etc. But with the advent of YouTube and the spark of a viral video by Dan and his husband about their life, It Gets Better reaches youth in their homes and libraries with over 20,000 videos by LGBT adults (and a book) about how they survived bigotry and bullying and grew up ...

A number of experts believe that bullying is a major source of school stress among kids of all ages. Bullying was once thought to be an annoying but inevitable rite of passage, but now parents and teachers understand that it can inflict lifelong emotional damage on its victims. Although no child is exempt from being bullied, children who are considered different are at higher risk for being victims. For kids with ADHD, bullying can affect them two ways. Their quirks and learning difficulties increase the possibility of being bullied, but current research shows that children with ADHD have the potential to become bullies themselves.
Who becomes a bully?
The stereotyped image of a bully is an overweight boy who torments younger, skinnier boys. However, bullies come in all shapes, sizes, and ...

Frank Lautenberg and Rep. Rush Holt, both New Jersey Democrats:
…the bill redefines [campus-based] harassment in a manner that is at odds with the Supreme Court’s exacting definition of student-on-student harassment, which successfully balances the need to respond to extreme behavior with the importance of free speech on campus. In Davis v.
It Gets Better: Dan and Terry
Renowned columnist Dan Savage launched the It Gets Better suicide prevention project for LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited, queer, intersex) youth bullied in high school and intolerant communities. It’s hard to feel isolated in a cliquish social setting with bigots and bullies, but once you leave you can find acceptance in new communities, meet friends and lovers, and live a great life. Dan and his partner Terry started the video series with their own stories of being bullied (“things got better the day I left high school”), and invite others to upload their own to YouTube. The It Gets Better Project now has dozens of inspiring videos about how people left behind the bigots, and are glad they didn’t give in to ...

Generally, it’s something really inane, like they’ll claim to be revealing a secret about me when it’s something I’ve written publicly about before (often many times, in many places), they’ve made something up, they’ve played on inaccurate interpretations, or they’ve twisted something real and given it sinister meanings. But when I made an important post about the way police treat disabled people, my mother (who has been commenting on my blog for years) replied and gave more details about an incident that happened to me when I ran away from a day program after a fight broke out.
Christian Nordqvist wrote a nice summary of recent research for Medical News Today on the relationship of obesity with bullying. Here are a few excerpts.
* * *
A new study published in the journal Pediatrics reports that obese children have a higher risk of being bullied, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, social skills, academic achievement or gender. The study, titled “Weight status as a predictor of being bullied in third through sixth grades” was carried out by Julie C. Lumeng, M.D., . . . and her colleagues.
* * *
The aim of this study was to establish the link between childhood obesity and being the victim of bullying in 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades.

Blogging Against Disablism Day: An Obituary
A community that tolerates and enables bullies, stalkers, and miscellaneous similar people, is no community at all. Do that and eventually many of the people who are or fear being targeted, will just fade away and hide. And only those of us stubborn enough to remain despite the harassment, defamation, and death threats will be left. Taking part in a community shouldn’t require the level of stubbornness I have learned, or disregard of one’s own safety. I go online every day knowing that my address has been posted on the web along with solicitations of murderers, rape jokes, and just about every possible level of nastiness and invasion of privacy — and my friends, family, and coworkers have been subjected to the same things. I&#82...

Maia Szalavitz, co-author of Born for Love: Why Empathy Is Essential — and Endangered wrote an intriguing article, titled “How Not to Raise a Bully: The Early Roots of Empathy” in a recent issue of Time Magazine. Here are some excerpts.
* * *
Increasingly, neuroscientists, psychologists and educators believe that bullying and other kinds of violence can . . . be reduced by encouraging empathy at an early age. Over the past decade, research in empathy — the ability to put ourselves in another person’s shoes — has suggested that it is key, if not the key, to all human social interaction and morality.
Without empathy, we would have no cohesive society, no trust and no reason not to murder, cheat, steal or lie. At best, we would act only out of self-interest; at wors...

In discussions with other autistic people about how other people have reacted to us our whole lives, I recently realized another thing that makes me different from some other autistic people (I honestly have no clue whether it’s most or only some). Which is in my reactions to my surroundings.
A lot of autistic people who, like me, were assumed (rightly or wrongly) to be anywhere from somewhat to highly capable by many people during our childhoods, seem to have something in common that I don’t have: They were most of the time a combination of several of… stiff, unusually formal, considered “dweeby”, reserved as far as interaction with their physical surroundings yet obviously “engaged” to a certain degree, and in general… lots of similar thin...

By Jason KuznickiIn my policy analysis “Attack of the Utility Monsters,” I wrote that one problem with hate speech laws is that the longer they stay on the books, the more they can encourage outrage over increasingly petty offenses. Here’s a story from the United Kingdom I’d certainly have included if I were writing that paper today:
A ten-year-old boy from Weston Super Mare has been put on a school “hate register” after he allegedly made a homophobic insult in the playground.
Peter Drury, a pupil of Ashcombe Primary School, is believed to have called one of his friends a “gay boy,” according to his mother.
The boy’s mum says she was called into her son’s school to be told by head teacher that another mother had heard him using homophobic language.

There's a campaign to encourage people to rethink the words they choose to write and say. Today, March 3 2010, has been chosen as a day to focus on these issues.Words matter, language matters. When people decide to use as slurs and insults, words that originated as diagnostic labels for various disabilities and/or for various categories of mental illness, real and manufactured ("hysteria") then they contribute to a culture that marginalises people. Disabled people are dehumanised by these words. A society that tolerates the use of slurs like r*t*rd and sp*st*c as equivalent to stupid, useless, pathetic, hateful or annoying, legitimises the hatred that leads to the abuse, murder, forced drugging and sterilisation and discarding of so many disabled people in this country and all around the w...

However this seems a worthwhile petition to 10 Downing Street. The case referred to in the petition appears to be that of Dr. Howard Fredrics, formerly of Kingston University. The case of Howard Fredrics is an important one - most especially so to writers who seek to call the leadership of academic institutions to account for their actions. We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to instigate an open enquiry into allegations of workplace bullying / harassment in institutions of higher education and concerns about the way the judicial system has dealt with complaints about such bullying and with those who protest (publicly or otherwise) about wrongdoing by their employers; the enquiry to be conducted with a view to addressing iss...

Skinny: Links the results of the 2007 acute inpatient and staff surveys using a series of statistical analyses intended to highlight the most important relationships between the two surveys. Key findings are:

The more staff who have had health and safety training, the better the patient perceptions of greater conscientiousness and availability of staff.
Organisations where staff have clear, planned goals are more likely to have patients who report positive experiences of communication; in particular around patients being involved in decisions on care/treatment, family members being able to speak to doctors, the me...

Some things sound so absurd you almost think “is that a Saturday Night Live Skit?”…and then you realize it is real. Such was the case when I learned about “Kick A Ginger Day” on Facebook when a friend sent me this link: this link.
Not only is it real and did it occur last Friday, November 20, 2009, but it occurred last year at this time…and both times was posted and announced on Facebook as a group! Last week’s posting resulted in a high school boy getting beat up by a group of teens in his school. Last year’s posting resulted in 5000 people signing on to this “cause”, originally based on a South Park episode.
There is a huge uprising on Facebook with pages of groups forming with names like “Anti-Kick a Ginger Day” and “Kick A Ginger Day Is Stupid”. A...

Stories about kids being mean to each other.
Prologue.Bully Book. A first-grader explains to host Ira Glass how bullies become bullies. His explanation: They read a book on how to be a bully. According to his reasoning, how else could you explain why kids are mean to each other? It couldn’t be that they’re just bad. (2 minutes)

New research finds children with autism have mercury levels similar to those of other children. University of California, Davis scientists said that the study was the “most rigorous examination to date of blood-mercury levels in children with autism,” and cautioned that the study did not disprove or prove whether mercury plays a role in causing the disorder. The study looked at the mercury levels in 452 participants – 249 with autism, 143 without it and 60 who had other developmental delays – and found levels “essentially the same” in all the children. More is here.

I attended the first part of Dr. Tony Atwood’s lecture on Asperger’s and high-functioning autism today in New York, presented by YAI. Though I could only attend the first part of the day-long talk, I’d highly recommend Dr. Atwood as a speaker: clear, humorous, and engaging. In announcing how he had to stop himself for the the morning break, for instance: “The longer you spend living with and working with those with ASDs, the more aspects of an ASD you pick up yourself!”

NB: this post is opinionated. It represents my own opinions and not those of my employer, my colleagues, my family or my dog. It’s mine all mine.
If there is something that gets me really riled up, it’s bullying. Maybe I had too much bullying when I was a kid, maybe I just believe in justice, but for whatever reason I get very grumpy when I see bullying. Unfortunately this time, I think I’m being bullied – and not by a small-time bully either.
This is a very large organisation that refuses to pay an invoice for services provided because of a paragraph I wrote in the final report. The paragraph is factual and directly related to the issues the patient raised during the pain management programme. It just doesn’t suit some members of the organisation...

JAMA Childhood bullying and victimization appear to predict future psychiatric problems in both males and females although females appear more likely to be affected regardless of pre-existing psychiatric problems, according to a report in the current issue of Archives of General Psychiatry. "Bullying can be defined as an aggressive act embodying an imbalance of power in which the victims cannot defend themselves accompanied by an element of repetition," according to background information in the article. "Bullying and victimization are associated with poorer family functioning, interparental violence and parental maltreatment" and often result in troubled outcomes for both bullies and victims. Although there have been studies on the effects of bullying, "there are no previous population-ba...

Duncan and I took his brother and sister to summer scheme. He asked to look in the charity shop and being in no hurry, I parked the car and off we went. Well talk about hitting pay dirt. Someone must have cleared their book shelves and dropped the boxes off very recently. There were a good few children's book spilling out so I asked if I could dig through the lot and the man working there, a good guy as I've learned from previous visits, said to work away. So we plonked ourselves on the floor and shifted through the boxes. Duncan made a little pile of those he was interested in and I made a huge pile of my own. Then ecstasy, we found 3 Thomas the Tank Buzz books, Duncan's absolute favourites. I hauled the booty to the pay desk and told the man I'd probably need to nip over to the ATM as I ...

I am so sick of this. There are some people who choose publicise their feeling of rage, hate and shock at having given birth to autistic children. On Gonzo's blog I read about one woman's horrible bile-filled blog post about her daughter. This child is 8 years old. Her mum describes her as "recovered from autism" whatever that means. But this girl still causes her mum so much pain because she just isn't how she's supposed to be (link broken deliberately). The mother complains that her daughter isn't into dolls and make up, but prefers to goof about, play computer games or ride a scooter. I mean, how dare the child resist the gender role assigned to her. If she doesn't start with the make up by 8 she'll never know how to apply liquid liner properly. But mum has more to say. She is jealous of...

I just read my buddy George's post about bullying and type 1 and wanted to help spread the word. As an adult, I've been exposed to some amazing assumptions that people have about type 1 diabetes: why it happens; how I maintain control: and what I can and cannot eat. This video, produced by Diabetes UK, does a great job of helping me see this through a child's eyes. It's... (Source: Diabetes Daily)

In January, a major UK children's charity, Action for Children, released a television advertisement ostensibly about the help they had offered an autistic boy. It gave however, a shockingly inaccurate, damaging and offensive portrayal of autism and I and several others (listed here) wrote about the ad and contacted the charity with our concerns. Action for Children responded with a form letter apologising for upsetting us, as if that made it all OK, but ignoring all our valid explanations of why the ad was wrong. I created a Facebook group as a way of mobilising support and attention on the issue quickly and in a few weeks, over 2600 people had joined. The ad was supposed to have run for 3 weeks but was pulled after only 2.In January, I complained to the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) ...

Dr. Perri Klass recently wrote an interesting essay, titled “At Last, Facing Down Bullies (and Their Enablers),” for The New York Times on the situation of bullies and bullying. Here are some excerpts.
* * *
In recent years, pediatricians and researchers in this country have been giving bullies and their victims the attention they have long deserved — and have long received in Europe. We’ve gotten past the “kids will be kids” notion that bullying is a normal part of childhood or the prelude to a successful life strategy. Research has described long-term risks — not just to victims, who may be more likely than their peers to experience depression and suicidal thoughts, but to the bullies themselves, who are less likely to finish school or hold down a job.

I wrote about the release of the recent report into the decades long, systematic, extreme and abhorrent violence, abuse and neglect. I have read more of the report and news and opinion articles on blogs and in newspapers. I have witnessed the pathetic response of the Irish Catholic church spokespeople, and even worse, the religious orders that perpetrated these crimes and who have no idea what true sorrow and repentance means. Then via John's blog I heard this man. I witnessed his anguish and his righteous anger. I do not know how those in power in government and church can allow this man, Michael O'Brien, and all the others like him who were abused in those places, to continue to suffer. This is outrageous. It is our national shame. We can't allow this to just hold the headlines for a few w...

Just over a year ago, I blogged about an ABC News story about bullying that gave data that women are more likely in the workplace to be bullied by other women. This week on MomLogic, blogger Ronda Kaysen posted an almost identical post.Reading Ronda's post I was filled with mixed emotions. It's a relief the cat's out of the bag. Awareness does go a long way in helping find solutions so the young women of tomorrow, including our daughters, will be spared the pain many of us have endured. Yet, it's disheartening that young women of today are still being bullied. Awareness becomes empty talk if we don't couple it with concrete solutions for change. Why is bullying of women in the workplace still such a major problem? Kayson offers this explanation for why we may which I completely agree with:"...

We all knew what to expect. It is still shocking though when you read the report, or, as much of it as you can stomach. The people of the church carried it out, they covered it up. Generations of children had their lives ruined, and in some cases, taken. The state conspired with the church leaders to hush the suffering children and to ensure that their pain wasn't made known beyond the cold stone walls of the orphanages, reformatories, "care" homes for disabled children and industrial schools. What was done to these children was brutal, far worse than the accepted level of child abuse tolerated at almost all schools in the country, the run of the mill beatings and canings by teachers which were legal and known as corporal punishment. These were an expected part of education in those not fa...

Sarah Hutcheon Children entering first grade with signs of depression and anxiety or excessive aggression are at risk of being chronically victimized by their classmates by third grade. That's the finding of a new longitudinal study that appears in the May/June 2009 issue of the journal Child Development. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Victoria, looked at more than 400 Canadian children beginning in the autumn of first grade. The children were asked about their experiences being bullied (such as being hit, pushed, and shoved, or being teased and excluded from play). Their teachers were asked to report on the children's symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as on their displays of physical aggression. The researchers returned at the end of first, second, and ...

"A woman has been made the subject of a 12-month conditional discharge after failing to ensure her child attended school regularly. Ms Nicholson said that when the welfare officer began working with MacDonald last year, she was considering home schooling her child. The court heard a home education officer visited them on October 8. But Ms Nicholson said, after realising what would be involved, MacDonald started making arrangements for her child to return to school.Ed Cunnah, mitigating, said the problems started with the pupil being bullied at school which led to a loss in confidence and caused the non-attendance. Mr Cunnah said that the most recent problems were medical. "Read more... (Source: Aspie Home-Education)

Autists might like Jezus. If you believe (it) or not, the things Jezus goes through during Easter and autism have more in common then you might think. This story is not written to offend anyone. If someone may feel harmed in any way, I therefore apologize. I acknowledge Jezus stands above all standards and people and there is nothing or no one which can be compared to his kindness. He died for us, he carries all our sins and has sacrificed his own live in order to set us free.Jezus was special. He was gifted with many talents. His wisdom was one of them. He acted in his own way. He lived among the people on earth in his own world.People with autism often are seen as and feel like they are strangers in his world. Just like Jezus. Jezus was different from the mass of people too. Jezus was bu...

Image via Wikipedia

A Bill that I hope will become law in Minnesota and an example for the nation is moving through the Legislature.

StarTribune.com

"The bill would prohibit "harassment, bullying, intimidation and violence" based on a student's personal characteristics such as race, sexual orientation or religion.

It would, in effect, "simply expand the categories of people that schools already cover with their anti-bullying policies," according to OutFront Minnesota, one of the organizations pushing for its adoption.

Education Minnesota, the state's teachers union, is the most prominent of several other groups backing the bill."

Bullying has been the scourge of childhood relationships inside and outside of schools. It has done tremendous damage to developing children at a highly se...

Neurotics try hard not only to project a positive image, but also to do the right thing. Disordered characters know this very well. So, when the person with a disturbed character wants to manipulate a good neurotic, all they have to do is somehow convince them that they've done wrong or behaved in a manner they should feel ashamed of.Tags: bullying, CBT, character disturbance, guilt, neurosis, therapy (Source: Psychology, Philosophy and Real Life)

I'd enjoyed the splendid @stephenfry on the rehabilitated @wossy show and was impressed by just how much Tom Cruise resembles a 3/4 size Michael-6. I'd a case of itchy remote finger so flicked the channels about a bit, and then I saw it: an horrific new advertisement by the charity Action for Children.A few minutes later I saw that Mike had already blogged about it and presented his reasoned objections to the ad. He has also transcribed the voice over:"I used to lash out if something pushed my buttons or I wasn’t able to do something.
At my post "GSK, Avandia and Medical Informatics: More on Why Pharma Fails" I outlined repeated rejection of Medical Informatics expertise by GSK, based on what I believed essentially to be the narrowminded and tunnel-visioned thinking of information technologists and others in pharma. I wrote:It is my belief that a view [at GSK] of medical informatics professionals as "writers of algorithms to solve business problems" reflects a fundamentally narrow and mechanistic view of the field, or perhaps a mislabeling of the position as being one of Medical Informatics. The lack of a requirement for formal Medical Informatics education and training suggests the latter. The U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences seems to agree with that assessment, as I pointed out in an...

Now it is time to end the silence: There is a hidden culture of girls’ aggression in which bullying is epidemic, distinctive and destructive. It is not marked by the direct physical and verbal behavior that is primarily the province of boys. Our culture refuses girls access to open conflict, and it forces their aggression into nonphysical, indirect and covert forms. Girls use backbiting, exclusion, rumors, name-calling, and manipulation to inflict psychological pain on targeted victims. Unlike boys, who tend to bully acquaintances or strangers, girls frequently attack within tightly knit networks of friends, making aggression harder to identify and intensify the damage to the victims.

The dichotomy between Kim in real life and Kim on paper is evident throughout the book.
As Kim grew older, she illustrated the obstacles she faced during her daily routine, such as sensitivity to noise. As a 12-year-old, she created a drawing titled, “Today.” In the picture, she has her hands over her ears, a word bubble from her mouth screams, “I can’t take it!”

Should Social-Emotional Learning Be Part of Academic Curriculum?

The Secret to Success
New research says social-emotional learning helps students in every way.
-- by Daniel Goleman
Schools are beginning to offer an increasing number of courses in social and emotional intelligence, teaching students how to better understand their own emotions and the emotions of others.
It sounds warm and fuzzy, but it's a trend backed up by hard data. Today, new studies reveal that teaching kids to be emotionally and socially competent boosts their academic achievement. More precisely, when schools offer students programs in social and emotional learning, their achievement scores gain around 11 percentage points.
That's what I heard at a forum held last December by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). (Disclosure: I'm a co-founder of C...

Knoxville Police Chief sheds a little more light on the motivation of Adkisson's murderous tirade. He blamed liberals from keeping him from a job.

CBS News "He felt he was being kept out of the loop because of his age and because he was not liberal.""

It seems unlikely that this belief has any basis in rationality. The thought would probably qualify as a paranoid delusion. I have found it quite common for themes of religion and sex in delusional thinking. I suspect because both of these topics inspire considerable passion in most people. A person prone to paranoia, down on his luck, will look for someone to blame around him, a victimizer who has it out to get him. Adkisson demonstrated the essence of paranoid projection. He was the one with aggressive intent towards liberals and gays. ...

My friend Rhetta Moran was fired from Salford University (a "greater" Manchester University) in 2005 under very unusual circumstances. There are fascinating linguistic aspects of sham university procedures and integrity scandals. Rhetta's research was said to be "no longer compatible with the school".A key problem facing academia in the UK is the lack of any plausible institution that speaks up for integrity and the values of a university. As Rhetta states, "One would have though that the idea of "compatible" or "incompatible" research would be something that should interest an academic union".This brief summary of Rhetta's story serves as a prelude to my next post about a joint letter we wrote to Sally Hunt about the dismal integrity failures of the Association of University Teachers (AUT...

But her mom fights on in her name, having recently created a foundation to help reduce and prevent online bullying (”cyberbulling”). The Associated Press has the story:

But in recent months, the Missouri woman has focused on ways to protect other children from bullying, even leaving her job as a real estate agent to dedicate herself to the Megan Meier Foundation.
“Megan is still my daughter, no matter what, and I am going out there and fighting for her still because she is still my daughter,” Meier said.

In the latest "missing child experiment" they placed numerous posters in a mall with photographs of a missing 8 year old "Britney Begonia". Britney herself sat next to some of the signs. Hundreds of people walked past and saw the posters, but only two stopped to ask Britney anything. Many bystanders questioned later said they noticed the stange resemblance between Britney and the poster but were "fearful of getting involved."An earlier Local 6 experiment involved a fake burglar breaking into a home.
Children with asperger syndrome often get horrendously bullied at school. Due to their inability to read social cues they tend to come across as a bit weird, and often say embarrassing remarks or make social blunders. As a result, the school bullies home in on them like lions circling an injured wildebeest.
Which makes this story even more shocking.

Melissa Barton said she is considering legal action after her son’s kindergarten teacher led his classmates to vote him out of class.
After each classmate was allowed to say what they didn’t like about Barton’s 5-year-old son, Alex, his Morningside Elementary teacher said they were going to take a vote, Barton said.
By a 14 to 2 margin, the class voted him out of the class.

I’m watching arguments for and against the expulsion of an autistic teenager from a church.
As a Christian, I would suggest the Church seriously take a look at Christian doctrine - 1 Corinthians 6:1-7 is pretty clear: a church should not need the law to resolve an internal dispute. But this is not a blog about Christian doctrine, but rather about disability. So, I’ll move on.
Every account of this incident in the media has mentioned one thing: that the child weighs 225 pounds (well, not every account - some list his weight as 235 pounds). In other areas, facts are missing from some accounts. But every account thinks the child’s weight is a huge factor, even accounts that don’t mention - at all - the child’s acts or behavior.
Let me ask this: Why? Is it perhaps...

Their research (1), just published online in Springer's journal Sex Roles, shows that although less frequent, sexual harassment has a greater negative impact on teenagers' health than the more common form of victimization, bullying.
Spreading rumors and gossiping may not cause bruises or black eyes, but the psychological consequences of this social type of bullying could linger into early adulthood, a new University of Florida study shows. In a study of 210 college students, the researchers discovered a link between what psychologists call relational victimization in adolescence and anxiety and depression in early adulthood, according to findings published in the journal Psychology in the Schools. Rather than threatening a child with physical violence, these bullies target a child's social status and relationships by shunning them, excluding them from social activities or spreading rumors, said Allison Dempsey, a doctoral student in the University of Florida College of Education and the study's lead author. "Even thou...

The University of Queensland has broken its contract with the scientific community. This is an absolute disgrace. I am reminded of the letters to me stating that I needed University "authorisation" to discuss issues of scientific procedure. I recall the warning of "public dissociation" and that "public interest disclosure legislation" somehow applied to discussion of scientific methodology involving Procter and Gamble.
According to research by Zogby International, 37% of the American workforce experiences bullying on the job. Further, according to the NY Times, the common workplace bully is much more subtle than “the playground” bully, which makes it difficult for the person being bullied to report him/her.
It may start with a belittling comment at a staff meeting. Later it becomes gossip to co-workers and forgetting to invite someone to an important work event. If the bully is a supervisor, victims may be stripped of critical duties, then accused of not doing their job, says Gary Namie, founder of the Workplace Bullying Institute, an advocacy group based in Bellingham, Wash.

Safer Children in a Digital World (Executive Summary) focus’ on issues including cyberbullying, violent games and web predators. Recommendations includ:

Establishment of a UK Council for Child Internet Safety

A clearer ratings system for video games using the recognised BBFC symbols U, 12, 15 and 18,

A public information campaign to educate parents and children in online safety

Strengthening the law against assisting suicides. Social networking sites should monitor discussions and intervene where young users are discussing suicide, by providing useful advice and support to people who may be looking for help. (Source: Fade Library)

I wrote a version of this once for Sharisa Kochmeister, who was dealing with people trying to publicly erase her existence. But when I write it now, it is intended for anyone dealing with such attempts at erasure. I am writing it because it gets right down to the core of the problem, rather than getting lost in details thrown around by those attempting the erasing, the ones they will try to distract a person with. I am writing it because I know several people right now, Sharisa included, who might need to remember this:
Remember that when they attack someone you are not, they are not attacking you. They are just attacking something they think is you, an illusion in their heads.
It can harm you, because it can make people mistake the illusion for you, and they can act badly towards you bas...

Workplace bullying, such as belittling comments, persistent criticism of work and withholding resources, appears to inflict more harm on employees than sexual harassment, say researchers who presented their findings at the Seventh International Conference on Work, Stress and Health held in Washington, D.C. "As sexual harassment becomes less acceptable in society, organizations may be more attuned to helping victims, who may therefore find it easier to cope," said lead author M. Sandy Hershcovis, PhD, of the University of Manitoba. "In contrast, non-violent forms of workplace aggression such as incivility and bullying are not illegal, leaving victims to fend for themselves." Hershcovis and co-author Julian Barling, PhD, of Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, reviewed 110 studies conducte...

Charlie has yet to be a target of bullying: He never goes anywhere in school without a teacher or instructor, nor does he go anywhere alone. Though his speech is limited, and it often seems to take him some time to understand what is being said to him, he is highly attuned to stares and whispers and certain looks in his direction, and those aren’t even “bullying behavior.” He is aware, I think, of being “different” and more and more aware of what other children can do and he cannot and I’m glad that he is protected.
Maryland legislators are considering four bills limiting bullying and cyberbullying. All of the bills ask local education officials and school boards to set policies on bullying:

HB 199
HB 206
HB 546
HB 732

Children on bullying report summarises research on children’s views on bullying, defining what bullying is and what to do about it. There are both worrying messages and hopeful signs among the varied responses.
It covers children living away from home in England (in children’s homes, boarding schools, residential special schools, residential further education colleges, foster care, adoption placements or residential family centres), those who are getting help of any sort from the children’s social care services of their local council and care leavers.
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study provides strong evidence that being bullied can cause children to develop depression and anxiety. Among identical twin pairs in which one experienced bullying between the ages of 7 and 9 and the other did not, the bullied twin was significantly more likely to have symptoms of internalizing problems at age 10, Dr Louise Arsenault of King's College, London, and her colleagues found.
We’re disappointed to learn today that the county prosecutor in St. Louis couldn’t figure out how to prosecute the people partially responsible for 13-year-old’s Megan Meier’s death. Good ‘ole county prosecutor Jack Banas said that based on available evidence, the actions of the people involved in the Internet bullying did not meet the standards required by state laws for either harassment, stalking or endangering the welfare of a child.
Really? Wow, that’s amazing. Either those must be weakest, dumbest state laws in existence meant to protect victims, or someone has cold feet in prosecuting a case bound to get continued national attention.
Megan Meier’s parents said her suicide was the result of harassment via her Myspace page:

"Parents are increasingly taking their children out of school to have them educated at home, with bullying and dissatisfaction with the state system the main reasons for doing so. Shock figures reveal that 634 pupils in Norfolk were taken out of primary and secondary schools this year, with the main reason listed as bullying.National survey results show bullying was among the most common reasons for parents to take their children out of school with 3,189 pupils across the country being taught at home for this reason. The survey revealed 7 out of 10 children have been bullied at school."Read more here. (Source: Aspie Home-Education)

In "The Wizard of Oz", Dorothy is transported to a strange place, where every thing is the same, but different. This place is exciting and colorful, but also somewhat scary to her. She wants to get back home (to normalcy-represented by a dreary black and white Kansas) but doesn't know how to get there. In her quest to get back home, she is directed to a wizard, who doesn't initially think she has any way of getting back to Kansas, but he doesn't want to disappoint her.The wizard puts on a big pyrotechnics display to show how great he is, gets angry at Dorothy when she questions him at all, and promises her if she just does X (get the wicked witch's broom) then Y (getting to go back to normalcy) will happen. Wanting desperately to go home, Dorothy does as the wizard says. While it's not a pe...

And what to do when it seems like no one will help? Experts encourage students to give specific examples, talk to administrators. As long as there have been schools, there have probably been school bullies. But the latest school shooting, at Cleveland's SuccessTech Academy on Wednesday, is yet another example of how the teasing and name-calling of the past can reap violent ends in the present when outcast students who are constantly picked on attempt to exact revenge using deadly force. From the rampage by student Seung-Hui Cho at Virginia Tech University earlier this year to Asa Coon's shooting spree this week at SuccessTech, the common thread of bullying has experts reminding us once again that students need to not only speak up about being bullied, but raise their voices even higher to a...

Child abuse/neglect is the scourge of our world. Every time I've looked behind the most heinous crimes in history, we find an abused or neglected child. Virtually all of the recent youthful mass murderers suffered bullying, emotional neglect, and often physical abuse at the hands of peers and/or parents. Today we make blogging history. Today, thousands all over the world are Blogging Against Abuse.

Lets understand the scope of the problem.

According to DHHS in their Child Maltreatment report, during 2005, an estimated 3.3 million referrals were made to child protective services (CPS) national wide. Six million children were involved. made to CPS agencies. Sixty two percent were deamed serious enough to investigate, 25 percent were found to be substantiated.
August 30th, 2007. Some of these journalists reporting on the Virginia Tech shootings should educate themselves on mental illnesses before going to press. Yes, Seung-Hui Cho was treated for selective mutism as a child and adolescent. Yes, anxiety disorders can be exacerbated by the pressures and stresses of the college years and, in Cho's case, being untreated while at college, his anxiety probably did become a lot worse. But, no, no, no! Cho's obvious psychosis was not a result of his anxiety disorder. It's roots are quite likely in his isolation. ...[N]ot knowing about Cho's treatment for selective mutism is not an excuse for Virginia Tech to let itself off the hook. The boy's isolation grew out to the ridicule he endured in the classroom over his fear of speaking - how do they get off w...

The sad thing about Cho, is that his problem was well beyond the ability of the school and mental health system had with which to cope. Even though Cho appeared to have been pretty well served by the high school in their special ed program, there were deeper seated problems than just an anxiety disorder.

Could a similar support program in college headed off the massacre? Possibly. But it also may not have. He was destined to have a melt down at some point. The only question was how much collateral damage there would be.

One of the more difficult challenges for families of school-aged children heading back to school is how to deal with the potential of bullying. While most schools have tough policies to reduce bullying, many children are still "picked on" or teased and this can affect their school experience and even their grades in the long run. Being bullied may increase vulnerability to anxiety and depressive disorders. Children with these disorders are also more likely to be targeted by bullies. Bullying expert Seth Scholer, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, says while it is difficult to say why some children become bullies, one of the best ways to prevent problems from escalating is to help children avoid becoming a target. He says ther...

A parent's struggle with stress or depression can lower a child's quality of life — and it could hinder an overweight youngster's attempts to lose weight, too, University of Florida (UF) researchers say. Parent distress, peer bullying and childhood depression can propel a cycle that makes it more difficult for children to adopt healthier lifestyles, UF researchers report in the current issue of the journal Obesity. Understanding more about factors that affect an overweight child's well-being could help health-care professionals better treat these kids, said the study's lead author, David Janicke, a UF assistant professor of clinical and health psychology in the College of Public Health and Health Professions. Tending to the needs of distressed parents could be one of the best ways to...

A bill to combat school bullying has been proposed that would enumerate all of the groups that would be protected from bullying. The conservative right is opposed to including language that would protect those who are perceived as or are gay, lesbian, or transsexual and other groups. Please visit the ENC Action Page to read about this controversy and to take action.RonThe far right is so mired in their own bigotry that they're willing to stand up and oppose a bill that protects our public school students from bullying and harassment simply because it makes clear that it covers anti-LGBT bullying.
Reading online, I’m amazed at some of the disrespect shown towards me and other adult autistics.
When you are an autistic adult, and express an opinion about autism, how autistics should be treated, or your feelings towards representations of autism, you face an amazing response. First, thankfully, there are many people who accept that you might just know a bit about something you’ve lived with your whole life. No, I’m not asking for people to agree with me or assume that everything I say applies to someone else with autism - in fact I hope that doesn’t happen. But I am heartened whenever someone does seek the views of someone with autism.
Unfortunately, there’s a minority of people who hold another view - a prejudiced and ignorant view that autistic self-advo...

I’ve been fairly lucky. Most of my work experiences have been positive. I’ve only been bullied by coworkers once (although I’ve had a couple exceptionally bad bosses at other jobs), when I was working as a dish washer in high school. It was miserable, but since then I’ve received respect from most of my coworkers.
Sure, there’s the occasional, well, donkey that I work with. But I’ve learned how to deal with this - directly, bluntly, and in a way that focuses not on my feelings or emotions, but rather appeals to the professional work environment.
Limbaugh Jumps the Shark

Alternet wonders why Limbaugh hasn't been fired yet - apparently not understanding what "syndicated" means. But I do wonder how long it will take for people to realize he's about as funny and relevant as "Who's the Boss" re-runs.This is a head-shaker. Imus gets canned for calling some college women basketball players "nappy-headed hos" and yet Rush Limbaugh plays "Barack The Magic Negro" on his show and he is still on the air?And the story links to a video that is one long "coon joke" which makes me wonder another thing entirely: How stupid do you have to be to consider this either funny or informative? If the best ammunition you can come up with against the policies of flaming liberals like Barak Obama and Al Sharpton is that they are (gasp) black, you ain't much use. Because, well, I got...

When Is the Bullying of Children with Allergies Legitimate? When It's A Defence of Civil Liberties?

Slideshow of peanuts and allergy medication. When I was little my brother used to rub soap over my pillow so that I would wake up the next morning with a severely swollen face, deep-red colouring and blisters. He would occasionally do the same to my clothing and bedding. I would probably have retaliated if it had been any easier to find blackcurrants and disguise them in other foods. You expect this sort of behaviour from young children. I have been very disappointed to learn that similar behaviours persist in some adults. It seems that direct bullying is not sufficient of a burden for some school-children with allergies, they now have to cope with indirect bullying from the parents of children who don't have allergies. It is particularly nauseating that some of these parents seek to cloak ...

Cho Seung-hui - symptom of an ugly social disease.

When Cho Seung-hui fired his last round into his own head, I am personally, morally certain that he did so feeling both a sense of relief and with a sense of having struck a blow for justice. He was wrong, of course. But after looking over such information as I've been able to find, I strongly suspect that there was a high barrier to him coming to a more "reasonable and rational" viewpoint - and a great deal that leads me to suspect that - within his own narrow, but probably quite sane perspective - his actions were completely rational and justified. It's pretty damn clear that within his lifetime, there were few, if any reality checks or positive, useful interventions, nothing to introduce a bit of reasonable doubt regarding the universal malevolence of "normal people."That would be the dis...

Autism Myth of the Week - Empathy

We don’t have empathy. We can’t put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and understand what it is like from their point of view. We can’t see through someone else’s eyes.
Well, that’s what the experts say about us anyhow.
As I re-read the responses to What do you love about your autie, I’m struck by one thing - how often the autistic’s concern for others is cited as a positive quality (the comments to that entry are some of the coolest things I’ve read lately).
People talk about an autistic child teaching a younger sibling - which requires empathy, because if you can’t figure out that someone else doesn’t know something you know, you probably wouldn’t even try to teach something.
Others talk about how they know if family...

A Serious Educational Issue

“One of the most serious educational and health issues”: This is a statement about autism from an article today on Westminster PMQs: Prime Minister Tony Blair speaks out on Autism from the BloggerNewsNetwork. The March 20th Medical News Today noted that a “huge momentum is building up as a result of the landmark debate on autism held in Westminster Hall on 7th March”; the debate was initiated by British parliamentarian Lee Scott, MP for Ilford North.
You can read a transcript of the debate here: I found it very interesting, and affirming, that the majority of the discussion was about education, and specifically about the issue of autistic students attending mainstream vs. private schools. Mr. Scott “commended” the work of the UK charity Treehouse, whose...
