We live in the most prosperous society on Earth at this moment. You can walk into any Gap or Target store and choose from more than 2 dozen different types of jeans (and in some cases, more than 3 dozen).
All of that choice comes at a price, however. It’s called “decision fatigue” and its full impact is only starting to be fully understood by psychologists and researchers.
Our brains can suffer from “mental fatigue,” just as our bodies can become physically fatigued after a long workout. What is so surprising about this phenomenon is just how little people appreciate the importance of mental fatigue and its resulting decision fatigue — even when making decisions that can be life-changing.

John Tierney in The New York Times has the lengthy story (5,350 w...

The following is a second guest post by Al Briggs, who I’m working with so that we can produce and dispatch Emergent Task Planner pads from within the EU. It’s been great to hear about how he’s shaping his fulfillment process! Here is the latest update since the events of his last post.

Firstly I want to announce that the first A4 Emergent Task Planner pads have been dispatched from Germany.

We received the first print run last week and have so far dispatched 13 orders, and we are now getting a system together to make sure that we can get orders invoiced and dispatched as quickly as possible.

If you signed up on our pre-order form you should have now received an email with the details that are needed to send you out an electronic invoice. If not then please check your sp...

A federal judge who’d ruled healthcare reform was unconstitutional and that his decision as a federal judge was the equivalent of an injunction has relented. Healthcare reform can continue in the states, pending appellate and Supreme Court review.
“The sooner this issue is finally decided by the Supreme Court, the better off the entire nation will be,” wrote federal judge Roger E. Vinson, who’d decided that the healthcare reform act’s mandate that people buy insurance or face penalties overextended Congress’ powers under the commerce clause of the constitution.
One reason for granting a stay, despite his previous clear intent that healthcare reform cease, includes his statement (on page 18) that:

By Daniel IkensonUniversity of Michigan economist and American Enterprise Institute scholar Mark Perry has an excellent oped in today’s Wall Street Journal [$] about how U.S. manufacturing is thriving. It can’t be emphasized enough how important it is to present such illuminating, factual, compelling analyses to a public that is starved for the truth and routinely subject to lies, half-baked assertions, and irresponsibly outlandish claims about the state of American manufacturing.
The truth matters because U.S. trade and economic policies—your pocketbook—hang in the balance.
For more data, facts, and background about the true state of U.S. manufacturing, please see this Cato policy analysis and these opeds (one, two, three).

By Daniel IkensonPresident Obama’s visit with the Chamber of Commerce this week has infuriated the anti-business Left. But short of expropriation and nationalization, what doesn’t?
Robert Reich and NPR and the scribes at the Huffington Post just don’t get it. Their man may be in the White House, but business holds the keys to the kingdom. Whether the president’s priority is job creation or reelection, nothing matters more than sustained economic growth. And without business having confidence that policy in the United States will become more hospitable and predictable, investment and job creation will remain tepid.
The president doesn’t have nearly the leverage assumed in the delusions of groups like Public Citizen, which wrote: "What America needs is not olive branches to...

A few weeks I go I had one of those FACE PALM moments: if I want to sell two-of-a-kind, I save money by packaging them together. I’d run a promotion over the holiday season selling two for 20% off the total price, just to see if sales would be affected. Sales did indeed go up, but Amazon charged me a pick-and-pack and handling fee for each individual pad. So, to further the experiment, I’ve created a new “shelf-keeping unit” (SKU) that consists of TWO ETP pads. That way, Amazon picks and handles two pads just once, and I can pass the savings down to the consumer. This also creates a decent incentive to buy more than one at a 20% discount, which increases volume sold, which is a good thing to do.

So if you’re thinking of buying more-than-one pad, check out the...

The Secret To The Virginia Healthcare Decision

Unconstitutional? How can the mandate to buy health insurance be unconstitutional? It must be some kind of misguided resistance to progressivism. Or maybe it’s someone finally taking a stand against a power-grabbing government program.
But it’s actually about something else entirely. And if you don’t know what it is, you won’t understand why the Virginia court ruled the way it did. Here’s the secret:
The U.S. Constitution grants to the federal government certain powers. These are things like raising an army, controlling currency and establishing courts. It also gives it the power to regulate interstate commerce, through something called the “Commerce Clause.” Everything else is the domain of the states.
Notice that the Commerce Clause only gives the federal government po...

GOP hardliners soon to be in control of the House have made repeal of the detested healthcare reform law a cornerstone of their agenda, despite the impossibility of actually being able to repeal it, politically, at least until an election or two has passed, and despite the fact that their ascent to power had more to do with the terrible economy and high unemployment than any mandate to repeal the law.
It seems that, finally, there may be movement towards increased public support for the law. A new McClatchy poll shows a majority of Americans now in favor of the law:
A majority of Americans want the Congress to keep the new health care law or actually expand it, despite Republican claims that they have a mandate from the people to kill it, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.

Physicians and particularly primary care doctors are reporting fewer industry ties than five years ago, according to a survey.
While 94% of doctors reported some type of perk from a drug or device maker in 2004, 83.8% did in 2009, researchers reported in the Nov. 8 Archives of Internal Medicine.
Researchers surveyed a stratified random sample of 2,938 primary care physicians (internal medicine, family practice, and pediatrics) and specialists (cardiology, general surgery, psychiatry and anesthesiology) with a 64.4% response rate. (more…)

By Daniel IkensonAt the beginning of the Obama administration, I had the audacity to hope that the new president would defy conventional wisdom and become a proponent of trade and a good spokesman for its benefits. Scott Lincicome and I even wrote a 20,000-plus word Cato analysis explaining why the economic, geopolitical, and domestic political environment offered the president a unique opportunity to steer his party back to its pro-trade roots.
The thrust of our analysis was that, despite the campaign rhetoric, the president understood the economic benefits of trade and that he would see it as an escape route from recession and a path to political success; that the president’s visibility and new cache with his trade-skeptical political party—and the fact that he wasn’t George W.
The Halloween season is upon us. The aisles are filled with costumes. Kids are getting excited about Trick-or-Treating and the bucketfuls of candy they’ll be hauling home.
Yesterday, CBC Radio's Q featured an interview with Samantha King, author of Pink Ribbons Inc. At the end of the interview, listeners asked the following questions (they were also posted to the Q blog): What are your impressions of cancer fundraising and awareness efforts? Are they working? Do you find any aspect of them troubling? My sister-in-law, B. alerted me to the interview (she listens on the east coast schedule) and encouraged me to write a letter in response. This morning, a slightly edited version of this letter was read on the air (I was the "Letter of the Day"):In January 2006, when I was 38 years old an the mother of two young children, I was diagnosed with very aggressive breast cancer. I underwent a brutal treatment regimen only to learn in November of that same year that the...

Hospital Readmissions Avoidance “Programs” — Vendors and Hospitals Not All On the Same Wavelength

Last week I attended and participated in an excellent conference — the National Reducing Hospital Readmissions Forum sponsored by World Research Group.
One of my main take aways is to observe a simple — yet huge — difference in mindset between hospital executives and vendors.
Over the past few months I’ve heard many vendors with diverse health care offerings talking about building readmission avoidance “programs” that they want to sell to hospitals. Their idea here is to put together a soup-to-nuts offering of technologies and services — a “program” that hospitals would mostly outsource to a 3rd party vendor.
This concept has never quite sat right with me. Having spent the first 15 years of my career in and around the hospital world, I’ve often observe...

Dear Friends and Family, This year, I am running/walking in the Run for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and I'm writing to ask if you'd be willing to make a donation. As you know, this is an issue that is very personal for me. In November 2006, when I was told that my breast cancer had spread to my liver, I knew no one who had survived this kind of diagnosis. Even my oncologist reluctantly told me that I had “years not decades” to live. But my response to treatment was immediate and dramatic – by June 2007, there was no longer any sign of cancer in my body. As I write this, I am still in remission. I'm also still in treatment, as we don't know enough about what happens when metastatic breast cancer disappears to make an informed decision about stopping. T...

In November of that year, I learned that it had spread to my liver. My oncologist told me that the were "more tumours than they could count" and when I asked how long I could expect to live, he reluctantly answered, "Years. Not decades."Fast forward to June 2007, when after several rocky months of treatments, I started feeling much better. Then, on June 30th 2007, a scan confirmed what my body had been telling me - there was no longer any sign of cancer in my body!I have been in remission for three years. I'll remain in treatment (chemotherapy and Herceptin every four weeks) for the forseeable future, though. There are so few women in...

We interrupt the regularly scheduled programming to bring you this open letter:Dear Ottawa area women friends and family, Last week end, my friend CR and I were talking about doing the Run for the Cure on October 3rd. I suggested forming a team named something along the lines of "We hate pink crap but we hate breast cancer even more." Elegant slogans were never my forte. C. reminded me that the brilliant KJ had already come up with "No Pink for Profit." I think this is perfect and I have registered a team with that name. Want to join me? We need ten women (anyone can participate but I'd really like to form a women's team) and you can run it or walk it, raise money or not. All it would involve on your part would be registering, raising money if you want (or just paying the registration fee)...

By Daniel GriswoldIn a bid to revive their sagging election prospects, congressional Democrats have hit on the theme of promoting domestic U.S. manufacturing. As a front-page story in the Washington Post reports today, the party has adopted the bumper-sticker slogan, “Make It in America.”
I’m all for making things in America, when it makes economic sense to do so. But the Democratic plan opens a window for all sorts of government intervention, including trade barriers, higher taxes on U.S.-owned affiliates abroad, and subsidies for “clean energy” and make-work infrastructure projects.
The campaign relies on two major but faulty assumptions: That U.S. manufacturing is in deep trouble, and that creating more manufacturing jobs is the key to prosperity. Neither assumption is true.

Industry-Sponsored Medical Education: Should Big Pharma Buy Doctors Lunch?

“Appetite for Instruction: Why Big Pharma should buy your doctor lunch sometimes” is the headline of an article on Slate.com that has upset many readers. I’m not terribly upset about it because it just seems too naive and misinformed to get upset about. The final line of the piece tells you all you need to know about the tone of the column:
“Ousting commercial support is creating a huge chasm in medical education, leaving doctors not only hungry but also starved for knowledge.”
A number of online comments were posted in reaction to the piece. (more…)

Best Buy’s executives have been scratching their heads for decades, wondering why women don’t shop at their stores. But they haven’t actually done anything about it until recently, when a bright, enterprising, and might we add, female, executive came up with the idea to actually ask women customers what they wanted. Male executives have dismissed the idea as a silly, “Oprah Book Club” even after sales among women began to increase. (Uh, yeah, because Oprah’s Book Club is not successful. At all.)
Women in focus groups across the country told Best Buy that cavernous, gray warehouse style stores weren’t welcoming or comfortable, as well as other ideas about the chain. Best Buy is implementing some suggested changes, and ...

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is an integrated computer-based system used to manage internal and external resources including tangible assets, financial resources, materials, and human resources. It is a software architecture whose purpose is to facilitate the flow of information between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.
If you've been reading this blog for a while, then you know how I feel about corporations selling pink crap in the name of "breast cancer." I even have a "don't buy pink crap" tag that use pretty regularly, especially in October. There have been some pretty awful pink products sold over the years but in launching "Buckets for the Cure," KFC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure have sunk to what may be a new kind of low. This stupefyingly bad idea was brought to my attention by Clergy Girl, in a post called "Buckets Of Saturated Fat For The Cure" over at Mothers With Cancer. She writes: This was a sell-out Komen. Did you ask anyone with breast cancer how they would feel seeing that big pink greasy bucket of chicken? Was someone going to lose their job if you didn’t raise cash quick?&...

Which war you ask? Of course, the WAR BETWEEN PHARMACISTS AND CHIROPRACTORS. In honor of my chiropractor, who has been made privy to this site, I’ve made a couple funny t-shirts. We’ve had a few good conversations about beliefs, traditions, and principles of both of our professions. I’ve cited many peer-reviewed research studies. He’s cited a lot of…well…anecdotal evidence…

Love, your local PHARMACIST
It’s long been known that there are a few QUACK chiropractors out there, and the vast majority of chiropractors don’t trust pharmaceuticals and ESPECIALLY VACCINES/Antibiotics (other than NSAIDS/Oxicams, COX-2, and a select few other drugs). We might as well...

Twelve-step facilitation (TSF) in non-specialty settings.
Participation in the twelve-step mutual-help organization, Alcoholics Anonymous, has proven to be an effective means of helping individuals with alcohol dependence achieve lasting sobriety.
Although many patients choose to attend AA of their own accord, clinicians’ facilitation of AA involvement ("Twelve-Step Facilitation" [TSF]) has shown to substantially increase the likelihood that patients will become engaged with these freely available resources.
Importantly, many individuals with alcohol dependence never seek help from addiction specialists, yet often encounter other health professionals due to alcohol-related physical or psychological problems providing an opportunity for intervention.
However, for clinici...

Since it’s the weekend, I like to open it up for the readers of this site to share their knowledge. Let’s hear the best advice you could give to someone who is implementing an EMR.
I’ll admit that I had a hard time just choosing one piece of advice. My first thought was mapping your current workflows and map them to your EMR software. This is an amazing way to plan for an EMR implementation. Then, my next thought was to choose the right EMR. However, that just feels too easy. So, I’ll take…
Make sure you get buy-in for your EMR implementation in all parts of your organization. Beg, borrow, steal, mandate, grovel, or whatever it takes to get buy in before you implement an EMR.

"Three years ago, I saw a story on the news while I was at the gym. An investigative feature on the breast cancer awareness contributions that various corporations pledged during Breast Cancer Awareness Month found that most of these promotions led to increased sales and windfall profits that dwarfed the piddling donations that the extra sales generated. Until that moment, I was gung-ho about buying products marked with pink ribbons."And so begins the best article I have ever read on the subject of the pink-washing of October (and not just because the author says you should all go out and buy my book). Suzanne Reisman hits all the bases in this piece and does it with eloquence and a sense of humour. If you have ever struggled to understand why some of us object to pinxploitation (I just mad...

I have become hooked on So You Think You Can Dance (US and Canadian versions) and Glee. I also have just discovered House. I've clearly been missing out on something good, there. After yesterday's grumpy post, I want to say that I think there are lots of groups out there doing good work on behalf of cancer patients. But many people with breast cancer are feeling exploited."It's only September 30th and I already have pink ribbon fatigue. I ranted about about this in 2006, 2007 and 2008 (there is also a version of this rant in my book, Not Done Yet). This year, let me point you to an excellent article by Maija Haavisto (and I don't just say this because she quotes me):Since 1985 October has been celebrated as breast cancer awareness month, often symbolized by pink ribbons and the color pink. It is interesting to note that the awareness month was started by the drug company AstraZeneca (which manufactures several breast cancer drugs) and the pink ribbon originated from cosmetics giant Estée Lauder...

If you haven’t checked into the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program, time is not on your side! The program’s Facebook page says that the HCBBP is: “A growing national movement of dentists who buy or collect Halloween candy from kids and then ship the treats to support our troops overseas.”
Your dental office has a sensational opportunity to get involved with your local community, which is great for marketing, and it also shows your business’s desire to give back to the community and nation. Keep in mind, the popular marketing trend of Generation G focuses on generosity, giving, and gratitude. HCBBP fits that bill to a T.
History of the program…
Dr. Chris Kammer started the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program in 2006 when his PR company asked him about an innovative idea for an Octob...

This informative article about planning for a giant career move, practice transition, was submitted to DentalBlogs by our friends at Henry Schein.
Your principal asset
For most dentists, ownership of their dental practice is the major focus of their energy expenditures, financial situation, and professional lives. Years of blood, sweat, and tears, coupled with the relationships formed with both staff and patients, have caused dentists to form a deep-seated emotional attachment with their practice. For many, the dollar value of that practice represents a significant portion of their financial assets. For the new dentist, there
is a definite value in acquiring the patient base which has taken the transitioning dentist years to develop and will provide an immediate and substantial cash flow.

We own three iPods at my house, including a recently purchased iPod Touch. Since many of the iPod parts are made abroad, is my family guilty of allowing our consumer spending to “leak” abroad, depriving the American economy of the consumer stimulus we are told it so desperately needs? If you believe the “Buy American” lectures and legislation coming out of Washington, the answer must be yes.
Our friends at ReasonTV have just posted a brilliant video short, “Is Your iPod Unpatriotic?” With government requiring its contractors to buy American-made steel, iron, and manufactured products, is it only a matter of time before the iPod—“Assembled in China,” of all places—comes under scrutiny?
The “buy America” provision in the misnamed stimulus bill was supposed to protect jobs in the U.S. Alas, by encouraging foreign protectionism, the measure is likely to end up destroying American jobs.
Indeed, the provision has all the earmarks of a grand political fiasco. Reports the Financial Times:
Confusion reins. For fear of missing out on contracts, many companies are demanding that all their suppliers are Buy American-compliant regardless of any exemptions.
“Those companies that can comply are of course thrilled and are trumpeting that in their marketing. Those that cannot are in agony and are losing business and cutting workers,” says David Ralston, a government procurement lawyer at Foley & Lardner. “The many companies that find themselves in the gray area...

Earlier today, Doug Bandow weighed in with some commentary on the problems that Buy American provisions are creating for both Canadian and American businesses. Let me reinforce his view that such rules are anachronistic and self-defeating with some thoughts from a forthcoming paper of mine about the incongruity between modern commercial reality and trade policies that have failed to keep pace.
Even though President Obama implored, “If you are considering buying a car, I hope it will be an American car,” it is nearly impossible to determine objectively what makes an American car. The auto industry provides a famous example, but is really just one of many that transcends national boundaries and renders obsolete the notion of international competition as a contest between “our” pro...

Techs moving shit around. Floaters reorganizing things that they have no business touching. Staffers changing settings under the assumption that either: a)I won’t notice. b)I don’t care. or c)I will agree that their way is better.
It’s pathetic, really.
Now, I’m not being controlling here — at least not overly controlling. I mean, we have a community station that we occasionally use for internet searchers, but it’s main function is for accessing the online ordering program. The computer itself is quite finicky. If you log out of the program, it’s a bitch to get back on.

The hospital - Seattle Grace - doesn’t exist and neither does its staff but that’s not stopping them from using the pending nuptials of Dr Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepard and Dr. Meredith Grey as a fundraiser for a worthy cause.
Actually, it’s a pretty clever idea - creating online wedding registry - that taps the Grey’s Anatomy’s fans into feeling that they are part of the wedding festivities, which allows them to donate in lieu of gifts to one of these three well deserving charities…
- American Academy of Neurology Foundation (ANN)
- Alzheimer’s Association
- American Skin Foundation
When contacted by the producers of Grey’s Anatomy as one of the chosen charities, the AAN foundation jumped on the offer. As foundation’s Executive Director, Catherine M Rydell, says

Popular culture tells us we’d be happier with more money, but how much is enough? John D. Rockefeller had a tongue-in-cheek reply to the query, “Just a little bit more,” while an entire countermovement scoffs at the notion that joy and contentment can be purchased, arguing that money is not the root of all happiness, but of all evil.
What does psychology have to say on the subject? According to a new San Francisco State University study, both camps are partially right: money can lead to greater happiness for the person possessing it and those around them, if it is used to buy experiences, not possessions.
According to SFU’s February 7 press release, the study by Ryan Howell, an assistant professor of psychology at SFU, “demonstrates that experiential purchases, such as a me...

What is the best gift to give someone who has just been newly diagnosed with breast cancer? Flowers usually work for everybody. A precious friend sent flowers as soon as I told her about the diagnosis. My sister–in-law sent them to my house as soon as I got home from surgery. While most women think that spending money on something that will not last is a waste, Dr. Phil listed smelling flowers among one of the best ways to fight stress; it causes you to stop and take a deep breath. I love flowers, and they are appropriate for someone home from surgery and limited in mobility, but I wouldn’t suggest flowers for anyone undergoing chemotherapy as some smells can increase nausea. To this day, I cannot buy particular scented hand soap because the smell seemed too intense and triggered nause...

Having lost both breasts to cancer, she is emotionally and physically exhausted, no longer willing to endure the nausea and crushing weakness that chemotherapy causes. I prefer to donate directly to my local cancer centre or to groups like Breast Cancer Action). And I loved it. It was a beautiful day. The atmosphere was one of tremendous goodwill.
October, as you most certainly know, is breast cancer awareness month. You won't find any pink ribbons here.Instead, I give you links to my previous posts on this subject:not in my name (October 2007)not enough to think pink (October 2006)And, if you want to read more, please check out Parade of Pink: Why BCA Is Concerned By Cause-Marketing For Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer Action also includes a list of "six critical questions" to ask before buying pink ribbon products so that you "support the cause, not cause-marketers."(I stole these links from an excellent post by sprucehillfarm, over at Mothers With Cancer.)So as, I said, you won't find any pink ribbons here.
According to The Wealthy Dentist, Fed Employees May Get Foreign Dental Work

Dr. Jim Du Molin, the man who posts all the great dental polls on his website at www.thewealthydentist.com, recently posted an interesting blog that may ignite your patriotism. He has heard that a dental insurance company that contracts with the US government to provide benefits to federal employees is seeking bids for low-cost labs overseas. In addition to the recent bad dental work scare, Dr. Du Molin mentions the Buy American Act. This act, passed in the early 1930s, says that the US government should work with US companies over foreign companies when feasible. Read Dr. Du Molin’s blog here: http://www.thewealthydentist.com/blog/329/federal-employees-could-be-getting-foreign-dental-work/.
It doesn’t take rocket science to buy less or to save more in today’s fickle markets. So what’s your best response when confronted with enticing new gadgets that few can resist?Take Friday’s launch of the Apple iPhone.Consumers burned their way along Apple lineups ... and yet few asked questions that could have prevented getting burned later by the flawed startup software. Has it happened to you? Here are 5 intelligent questions to ask before you make any new purchase: 1. What do others say about this product?2. Do monthly payments increase total costs?3. How will the gadget add financial value to the firm’s bottom line. 4. What top advantage will this purchase add to the firm’s existing models?5. Will the cost of this gad...

People tend to resist changes … even those bearing benefits … when leaders fail to get their buy-in. Have you seen it happen? It only makes sense … human brains oppose delivery of changes they had no part in creating. Similarly … people often fail to implement changes somebody else dictated. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. How so? 1. Instead of saying … we’ll meet at such and such a time … ask people to suggest convenient times. 2. Rather than tell people what to do differently … ask their advice and gather suggestions about the action plan you have in mind.3. Rather than criticize what went wrong … reward more of what goes well. 4. Before sending that memo to announce chan...

Benefits of Using an EMR/EHR Consultant - Improved Clinical Buy-in

Part five of our five part series on the benefits of an EMR or EHR consultant is improved clinical buy-in.
Improved Clinical Buy-In
Hiring a proven EMR consultant alleviates fear and increases clinical buy in. However, more importantly, EMR consultants are able to provide a clinic the tools needed to show an EMR implementation’s ROI. EMR consultants should do a comprehensive analysis to show how an EMR implementation will reduce costs, increase revenues, and better care for patients. Quantifying the potential returns on an EMR investment generates significant buy in at all levels of a clinical organization.

Today I discovered the exact opposite of the Hebbian Learner in Robert Shemin – who wrote the book … How Come That Idiot’s Rich and I’m Not? Robert first caught my eye, because it's Thanksgiving, and he gives thanks daily for blessings such as friends … family … heath … and freedom! No wonder he wins! There’s more too. Multi-millionaire … Shemin challenges people to stop living paycheck-to-paycheck and tells readers to turn their Hebbian thinking upside down. In his words … unlearn things that keep you from making money … and start a 3-part wealth plan. 1. Buy real estate. Shemin suggests you buy three properties for little or no money down. Live in one and draw income from the other two. Real...

Then I realized that there was something much more insidious behind the pink ribbon bandwagon. And I wrote about it here, in a post-entitled "Not Enough to Think Pink."These are just some of the things I have come across or been asked to promote in the last couple of weeks:Pink acrylic sweaters with little pink ribbons on them.Pink vaccuum cleaners.Pink towels promoting a sports beverage.Pink candies.Pink manicures (there is a nail place down the street from me that is decorated in pi...

I have this bag that I got at the BlogHer conference. It's a messenger style bag, light weight (key when you can only carry a bag on one shoulder due to lymphedema), reasonably rugged, a good size (big enough for wallet, knitting and notebook but not so big it feels awkward). And it looks good. I own lots of bags but this freebie has become my favourite.Until recently, there was only one thing wrong with it. As a freebie, it came emblazoned with two logos. The first is for BlogHer, an organization for which I am happy to advertise. The second was for General Motors, a major sponsor of the '07 conference.Until recently, I put up with the GM logo because I like the bag so much. Then, last Tuesday, workers at GM across the US went on strike and GM reacted with massive layoffs here in Canada. ...

Filed under: Type 2, Childhood, Adult Onset, Diet, Lifestyle, Drugs, Research, Daily NewsLast time I checked -drugs weren't cool, but according to a recent study, within the last 3 years, the number of teens using type 2 diabetes drugs has soared.
Medco, the largest US drug benefits manager, found the number of children taking medicine for type 2 diabetes more than doubled between 2001 and 2005. An analysis of prescription data found a 146% increase over four years in young people aged 10-19 taking type 2 diabetes drugs, and 115 % increase in all children in the survey. Children on diabetes medicines also faced other serious problems. About 17% of the boys and 13% of the girls were on drugs for high blood pressure; 5% of both were taking cholesterol-reducing drugs; and nearly 20% were tak...

Did you know that 10 percent of the energy consumed in this country (~100 billion gallons of oil per year) is used to grow our foods? And 14% of that astounding number is related to transporting foods from where it is grown to where it is eaten? Another 1/3 of the energy related to producing food is related to the manufacture of fertilizers. The SF Chronicle, in a supplement to celebrate Earth Day, published an article to help readers Eat Green. Entitled, "Are You Gorging on Fossil Fuels?" the article , written by Carol Ness, provides some, well, food for thought...and hopefully it will spur you to action. Here are some of the tips from that article:Eat local. You can save tons of energy by eating foods grown within 100 to 150 miles of where...
