What’s Inside Osama Bin Laden’s Medicine Cabinet?

NBC News obtained from sources in Pakistan a list of drugs found in Osama bin Laden’s medicine cabinet, after Navy SEALs left the scene of the raid and Pakistan officials took over the compound.
The list shows that bin Laden was a fairly typical–almost American–consumer of over-the-counter medications. There was nothing to indicate he needed dialysis or had diabetes or Marfan syndrome. He did have secondary osetoporosis, according to physicians who examined photos of him over time. (That’s an actual job, by the way, for physicians who’d want a career drawing up profiles about the health of world leaders or terrorists and feeding that information to intelligence analysts.)
Bin Laden stocked pain relievers for kids living at the compound, some home remedies for ...

By Roger PilonToday POLITICO Arena asks:
Would a staff shakeup — and potentially Cabinet — help the White House and congressional Democrats recover ahead of the 2012 elections?
My response:
If the president’s press conference yesterday is any indication, it’s going to take far more than a White House shakeup for Mr. Obama and congressional Democrats to recover ahead of the 2012 elections. In several ways, the president was asked point blank whether he still resisted “the notion that voters rejected the policy choices [he] made.” His answer? Voters “are not satisfied with the outcomes.” And again: “they’re deeply dissatisfied with the pace of our economic recovery.”

Time and again, he declined to draw the connection between his ...

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) coordinat[ed] “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day” this [past] Saturday [September 25th], encouraging people to turn in their unused prescription drugs. The agency hopes the event will help decrease rates of crime and addiction linked to prescription drug abuse, the New York Times reports.
From the DEA press release:
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtain...

About The Children’s Medication Recall

The [recent] massive recall of some of the most popular [children's] medications is unsettling, disturbing and concerning. Thankfully it was done as a precautionary move before any child was harmed and that there’s a sufficient supply of generic alternatives of the medications recalled.
Still, having 40 popular medications recalled by one of today’s most trusted pharmaceutical manufacturers rocks our confidence in the safeguards in place at the core. (more…)

Obama’s Choice for Surgeon General

The President announced his choice for Surgeon General yesterday. She’s 52-year old Regina Benjamin, and by all accounts, she’s a caring and talented woman. She runs a family practice in Alabama and Obama said that when clients couldn’t pay, she simply didn’t charge them. She also went without a salary when the clinic was not doing well. How often do we see something like that?

Benjamin’s family has had a history of what she calls “preventable diseases,” and even remarked that the reason her family couldn’t be there was because they all had struggled and lost to things like high blood pressure, diabetes, and lung cancer. This background will no doubt make her that much more determined to spread the word for us all to take care of ourselves....

Back pretty sore. It feels like I’m bent over by the weight of bricks on my shoulders. Not being able to arch my back is killing me. If only I could just stretch…
I know I need to take some motrin. BUT – not good to take motrin on an empty stomach. Okay, gotta eat then. BUT – nauseous also.
Okay then, cannabis for the stomach. Quick smoke. Now I have to wait for it to kick in. It helps the nausea but does nothing for my back (not with this level of aching). About 20 minutes later and I’m eating some cereal. I pop the motrin. Now gotta wait for THAT to kick in. So far, about an hour and a half has gone by since I woke and the back pain is still there. Stomach? Good.
Goddamn this is so annoying, this f.ing reliance on things outside of myself just to feel more...

The President’s Make-Believe Fiscal Conservatism

At first, I thought the calendar was wrong and it must be April 1 and the White House was playing an April Fool’s joke. That seemed like the only logical explanation for a story in today’s Washington Post stating that the President wants all government departments to identify $100 million in supposed budget cuts. With 14 cabinet-level departments, that adds up to $1.4 billion of savings — and those savings almost certainly be measured against an ever-increasing budget baseline, which means that they would merely be reductions in planned increases. This is a shallow and insincere stunt to trick taxpayers. This is the same President, after all, that just squandered nearly $800 billion on a so-called stimulus bill. And this is the same President that just rammed through a $3...

Slate’s Suggestion to Obama: Choose a Cabinet of Geniuses

According to the November 15th Slate, Barack Obama needs to choose a cabinet of really smart genius types—that is, with those who are “brilliant—albeit prickly, semi-autistic, and egomaniacal—thinkers”:
The issue starts at the Treasury Department, where the best choice would be former Clinton Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers. Summers is the outstanding international economist of his generation, someone whose brilliance is immediately evident in any conversation. …………….
Summers can also be arrogant and politically incorrect. He sometimes does a poor job hiding his contempt for lesser intellects and loves to play the intellectual provocateur. Socially, he can be a bit autistic. But these are the defects of a superior mind, and they are a...

Filed under: ProductsI have a bucket of drugs in one of my kitchen cabinets, stored way up high and out of the reach of two busy little boys. For a short time during my breast cancer treatment I reached for this container every day. Lately, though, I have little use for this medley of medication. There are some things I use -- like cough medicine made for little people and ibuprofen for the occasional headache -- but mostly, we are a drug-free household. So really, I don't need much of what I'm storing in that cabinet. Much of it is so old, in fact, it has probably expired.Every once in a while, we should all take a tour through our medicine cabinets and peek at the expiration dates on our prescriptions and over-the-counter bottles. If anything is expired, toss it! Expired medications do n...
