By Ilya ShapiroAs Congress debates cap-and-trade, new fuel standards, and subsidies for "green" companies, some still feel that political solutions to global warming are not moving fast enough. In the present case, American Electric Power Co. v. Connecticut, eight states and New York City sued several public utilities (including the federal Tennessee Valley Authority), alleging that their carbon dioxide emissions contribute to global warming.
This is the third major lawsuit to push global warming into the courts (another being Comer v. Murphy Oil USA, in which Cato also filed a brief). All of these suits try to use the common law doctrine of nuisance—which, for example, lets you sue your neighbor if his contaminated water flows onto your land and kills your lawn—to attack carbon emitt...

It’s Friday and I would like to give a shout out about great customer service and give you a chance to relate your customer service stories in the comments.
My wife and I moved to North County San Diego about a year ago. In the process we had to find new restaurants, stores, and other businesses. It’s always hard to give up the great experiences you had in your last location. You just hope to find something similar in the new.

One Saturday my wife and I headed out to the town of Vista to look for breakfast and I looked up local restaurants on Yelp. Yelp is a popular web site where people leave reviews of restaurants and other local businesses. A few good ones popped up, but one stood out with great five star reviews so we decided to head on over to discover the Sunrise Café.

Was the CAFE study manipulated by AstraZeneca? Maybe Not.

This study design in no way was influenced adversely by industry influence."

So there you have it. If you can believe these researchers, this may have been an example of an AstraZeneca funded study without undue commercial influence. I think they are believable, and I know that Dr. Lieberman in particular has been quoted regularly in the media recently about various new drugs, and has been appropriately skeptical about their benefits over older agents.

Of course, there are other ways in which CAFE might have been rigged, which are detailed in Carl Elliott's Mother Jones article. I've asked the investigators about these allegations and will let you know if I get a response. (Source: The Carlat Psychiatry Blog)

Basic Skin Care – Remember the Sunblock

Melanin is what makes our skin brown. This pigment is also the skin’s primary defense against the harmful rays of the sun.
Being people of color, the high amount of melanin in our skin is the reason why the incidence of skin cancer is almost nil and is why our skin ages more slowly than Caucasians.
Given these facts why else do we need to wear sunblock and why do we need to use it daily even though we’re practically in the shade all the time?
New studies have come up showing that even intermittent exposures to the sun as short as a few minutes (like that 5 minute walk to that nearby cafe) may do sub-clinical damage to our skin.
Slowly and with time these damages add up and become visible as wrinkles, pigmentation changes, dullness, increase in pore size etc.
Luckily, there are numerous...

I’m busy dealing with the fallout from the President’s address to students yesterday, especially the cheap-shot smearing as kooks or right-wing zealots anyone who dared question the propriety of the event. That has left me with little time to blog about the speech. Fortunately, I don’t have to: Over at Cafe Hayek, Cato Adjunct Scholar Donald Boudreaux has penned a terrific explanation of why very reasonable people could object to the president’s speech. Here’s the best part:
The idea that we should be ‘inspired’ by winners of political elections — the notion that successful politicians have some special wisdom to impart — the stupid consensus that high political office renders its holders unusually trustworthy when delivering clusters of cliches â€...

If you like driving a big car or SUV, the good news about Obama’s new fuel-economy standards is that they won’t dictate what kind of car you will be able to buy in the future. If you want to buy a 15-mpg SUV, Detroit (or Aichi or Wolfsburg) will be free to make and sell you one.
The bad news is that the standards may make your car more expensive. Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards are actually calculated as the mean of gallons per mile, not miles per gallon. So, as of 2016, for every 15-mpg model made by an auto maker, that company will have to make five models of cars that can go 50 mpg in order for its fleet to meet Obama’s new target. Since bringing each new model to market can cost billions of dollars, if there are not enough people who want to buy those ...

I know the numbers on everyones' minds are the points scored at the Super Bowl (I predicted it right!). But I got some good numbers of my own recently: my latest HIV lab results. The viral load is undetectable, and the CD4 (t-cell) count is 523... the third highest I've had recorded since the 1980's!
Sweet!
For those who know about my week on/week off treatment strategy, it's important to note that the labs were drawn after being two days into a week on the drugs.
Huh?
I take my HIV meds for seven days, then don't take them for seven days and repeat that cycle. In the March issue of Poz- out next month- there will be a column about why and how I came to the decision to do this back in 2002. I'll link it when it's up.

So one of my favorite things aside from high t-cell counts is gettin...

Many times, once someone’s caregiving time is finished, they choose to move on. Mary Emma has returned to help the rest of us along.
Some people have asked me, “Why?” when so many caregivers and Alzheimer’s family members choose move on.
I want to reiterate:  First…it’s okay to move on. Second…I’m not stuck in the past.
As Edie has glimpsed, I chose, through my writing and speaking, to remain involved and help those who are still going through caregiving. When Mother and Auntie developed Alzheimer’s (Auntie first in the 1980s and then Mother while caring for her sister in the early 1990s), there weren’t many resources for the caregiver.

Thanks! She also described a situation in her caregiving life that you might relate to.
As I mentoned to Edie, it is difficult living day to day with someone who has Alzheimer’s and can be very stubborn. They’re also often frightened by what’s happening to them, so strike out verbally and physically at those closest. That often is the caregiver.

AlzheimersNotes.com
Unusual celebrations often have appeal for Alzheimer’s patients. They need not make sense or even be ones they know about. I discovered that Mother enjoyed parties, even if they were just for the two of us.
At the nursing home, the residents also enjoyed gatherings. They might be confused about the day or the era, but it often brought back reflections of some kind.  This broke the monotony of their day and was fun for the staff, too.
Today, June 7, was Daniel Boone Day, I discovered, when I visited Sandra Mitchell’s All Holiday Cafe. Even though it might be too late to arrange a pioneer celebration for your Alzheimer’s family member (and any children in your home) today, you could use this idea as a springboard for future fun times.

When I approached the cafe from Jackson Square I saw what seemed to be perhaps a beach side cafe with a starving artist out in front of it.....I must admit when I got in the Green and White Awning open air cafe I saw a neat business model and tasted what I deem "smooshed funnel cake". It turns out at the Cafe Du Monde, the waiters take your order, pay the cashier...almost as if they are reselling the goods........meaning the Beignet! T...

Zetia - something brewing on Cafe Pharma

Cafe Pharma, the anonymous bulletin board for Pharmaceutical Sales Representatives, is always amusing and insightful. The mud flows freely. From these anonymous comments today on the Schering Plough board [Link, Link], one wonders what innovations are brewing with Zetia and a "49 day plan". Some great science I suspect. Yesterday, 06:33 PM Zetia 49 StrategyWondered what everyone thinks about this Zetia 49 plan??I hate having extra $$ that I have to spend on Drs that I can barely see. I have a hard time spending all my lunch/dinner $$ now. Can't get docs out to dinner anyway - especially the ones they've targeted for me...... This instruction that we are to have a lunch or dinner EVERY DAY - come on!! Like all the Drs offices aren't booked already for the year - or have stopped doing lunche...

I love a Congressional investigation as well as the next guy, especially when it involves purported wrong-doing by pharmaceutical company bigwigs. The House Committee on Commerce investigation into "who knew what when" about the ENHANCE clinical trial is a case in point. Did bigwigs at Schering-Plough cash in stock options well ahead of the negative news?As pointed out by whistleblower Peter Rost on BrandweekNRx, at least a few people inside SP knew that ENHANCE was a failure way back in March, 2007 -- about 10 months prior to the public announcement and a month or two before Schering bigwigs -- including president Carrie Cox -- sold stock (see "New evidence indicates Schering-Plough insiders knew the Vytorin trial was "a bust" on March 13, 2007").These people inside SP were "anonymous" pos...

Were Vytorin Results Circulating Under Our Noses?

As early as last spring, there was scuttlebutt about the controversial Vytorin data - the bet-the-franchise study that failed to find any statistical advantage over the much cheaper Zocor in reducing arterial plaque. The results were delayed for nearly two years while the primary endpoint was changed.
Meanwhile, Vytorin and Zetia (which, along with Zocor comprise the Vytorin combo therapy) were heavily promoted. And concerns that Schering-Plough execs sold lots of stock last year have sparked investigations by Congress and two state attorneys general. This has all led to the ‘Who knew what and when?’ line of skepticism toward Schering-Plough and Merck, its Vytorin joint venture partner.
Schering-Plough has repeatedly argued its execs knew nothing of the results until early this...

True Confessions Redux: Another MD Shill for Pharma Outed

Yesterday, I wrote about Dr. Carlat's confession of being a shill for Wyeth (see "Dr. Carlat's True Confession: 199,999 More to Go"). As a follow-up, I decided to see what Carlat is saying on his blog and what drugs reps are saying on Cafe Pharma.Carlat recounted some feedback under his post "Return the 30K, You Cheap Thief", which was inspired by a comment made to the WSJ Health Blog. In my critique, I never suggested that Carlat give back the money. He did, after all, take time off to do lunch-and-learns. Many reps in the Wyeth Company board over at Cafe Pharma, however, suggest that these gigs usually involve little or no work at all and may even be counterproductive (see below).Regarding giving the money back, this is Carlat's retort:"I'd be curious to hear opinions about: A. Whether I...

I guess Cafe Pharma is onto something… Researchers at two U.K. universities have disclosed research which suggests that obscenities in the workplace build morale and teamwork. Their work has been published in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Development. For more, read on.

Coming to a Starbucks Near You?

You can buy music at Starbucks, you can get iTunes at Starbucks, you can get connected at Starbucks, you can get caffeine-refueled at Starbucks. (Thanks to a Starbucks card that was a present from last Christmas, I replaced my broken coffee pot gratis.) And now (in Bahrain), you can hear about autism. AME Info reports:
Parents of autistic children initiated the ‘A Friendly Talk on Autism’ Campaign in Bahrain with the aim of creating awareness about autism and seeking support from the community.
Starbucks Zinj store hosted and participated in the discussion in an effort to educate Starbucks partners on how best to accommodate autistic children in the stores.
It’s always good to hear about a business seeking to open its doors to autistic children though (in all honesty) m...

Science: Coming to a Cafe near you

All the best scientific discussions happen over a beer (just look to the Bayblab podcast for proof), but they don't have to occur just between scientists. In an effort to make science more accessible and increase public understanding of science, there's a program called Science Cafes (think Let's Talk Science for the pub set). Modelled after the British Cafe Scientifique, this program lets the general public engage in scientific discussion, ask questions, participate in debate and generally educate themselves on the latest science issues, all in an informal setting. Unfortunately the Canadian version doesn't seem to have been very active in the past couple of months - the last one in Ottawa was June 12. Maybe the Bayblab crew should host one (and podcast it, of course). (Source: Bayblab)

Dumb Blonde Reps vs. Slovenly Genius Reps

Ed Silverman over at Pharmalot posted a fun little item about a poll that Cafe Pharma is currently running.Ed asked "Do Good-Looking Reps Do Better?" or rather that was the gist of the poll. The devil is in the details. Here's what the poll asked:Which type of rep gets the best results? An average looking rep that knows their products and can sell? or A super attractive rep that is an idiot and can't sell?Only 16% of respondents chose the super attractive rep option.Unfortunately, this survey can't possibly yield any meaningful insights. To sell (ie, "do better" or "get best results"), you first have to get in the door. So, a better question would have been: Do attractive reps get better access to physicians than do slovenly, but knowledgeable, enthusiastic piglets?I think a lot more than 16...
