“What do you do?”

“Project management,” I reply.

“What is that?”

“...I make spreadsheets.”

And so goes the conversation any time I am asked about my profession. I don’t know what I do, so saying “spreadsheets” is easier than trying to explain project management.

I do know that three letters added to the end of my name on LinkedIn make me more valuable—PMP, or Project Management Professional. PMP is a credential that demonstrates I know project management, even if I say "I make spreadsheets,” and even if I think all I do is make spreadsheets and only know how to make spreadsheets.

My company invited me to take part in their PMP training program, along with nine others. I’d like to claim it’s because I’m a promising young professio...

Recently a reader commented that making a version of the compact calendar for the academic year would be quite handy. While it’s possible to modify the existing calendar, I recognized the value of having a ready-to-go version for harried teachers. The new Excel and PDF versions are designed for the United States academic year, which starts roughly around Labor Day. As a bonus, I’ve added a few new features.

What’s New?

Requires Excel 2007 or higher – I’ve upped the requirement from Excel 1997 (over 14 years old) to Excel 2007. This allows me to use a nicer version of the shading in the corners, and I can start using some decent-looking color schemes. The Excel 1997 colors are really ugly.

Do you need a happiness boost — right now? If so, take a look at this menu of options and make your choices. Remember, the more you tackle, the bigger the boost you’ll receive.
When you’re feeling blue, it can be hard to muster up the physical and mental energy to do the things that make you happier. Plunking down in front of the TV or digging into a tub of ice cream seems like an easier fix.
However, research shows (and you know it’s true) that these aren’t the routes to feeling better. Try some choices below. The more you push yourself, the better you’ll feel; but if you can’t tackle a big task, just do something small.
Even a little step in the right direction will give you a lift.

According to my ground-breaking happiness formula, to be happy, you need to think about...

In my last post I talked about scheduling using Google Calendar. This tool allows you to have multiple calendars overlaid over one another. This allows you to see possible conflicts and to move things around to make things more efficient.
The cool thing about using a calendar tool like this is to put down all the things you are currently doing and look for time areas that can be better utilized. Here is an example from my daily calendar that many people have to deal with.

Given our busy lives and the way most cities are laid out, many of us have to commute to work. This may be by car or public transportation. For many people this is just wasted time, especially if you have to drive. Additionally, most people have a lunch hour, which can be a time to wind down, but many times is unproducti...

Most of us circle a few days of the calendar year that we know will be difficult to get through: the anniversary of a death, traumatic event, or even happy occasion. These dates are charged with emotion.
Sometimes we feel trapped by these dates — like there’s nothing we can do to stop them. The approaching date creates a sense of panic and anxiety in many of us, and we can feel out of control. The one benefit from anniversary anxiety is that we can predict it and therefore prepare for it. Here are 8 ways to do just that.
1. Forecast your emotions.
You’ve circled the day. You know it’s coming. Now get honest with yourself about how you might feel on that day. If it’s the anniversary of a death of a loved one, get ready to celebrate that person’s life wit...

You’d have to hold too still
Don’t move your arm or the sun won’t fall just right, and it has to —

What is the Psych Central Community Connection?
The Connection is our non-profit that makes micro grants (also called personal grants) available to Psych Central members in emergency financial need. These micro grants (of $500 or less per individual) are for immediate personal/family need that might make the difference between homelessness and staying in one’s home, heat in the winter or freezing cold, or keeping the electricity turned on.
They were previously referred to as “Community Fund Drives” and, indeed, we will continue to rely on our community of kind-hearted members to offer matchi...

So you know how we made sure to have a very lowkey Thanksgiving and also to keep things real simple and understated for Charlie’s birthday, a holiday involving days off from school and an event that has been known to cause Charlie some serious consternation? In 2008, both of these days passed well and quietly for us, largely because we strove to make them Super No Big Deal in the biggest way.
So you think I’d have applied the same tried and true formula to Christmas and New Year’s.
Granted, since we take a 3000 mile airplane trip from New Jersey to California, and (as we traveled on Christmas Eve day, due to Charlie’s having his last day of school on December 23rd) no sooner had we landed and gotten to my parents’ house then we all got into a rented minivan an...

The Romans, as I tell my incredulous students, did not have a concept of a weekend. Each months had its Kalends, Nones, and Ides, and feriae (holidays) in which the usual negotia of lawsuits, labor, and other transactions concerning the res of daily life were suspended.
While he does not talk about it, Charlie’s got an internalize sense of time. He had Thursday and Friday off from school as it was the annual convention of the NJEA (New Jersey Education Association). Its a small rupture in his schedule to have the one long weekend in early November. As Jim and I have to work, my parents visit from California.
Saturday Jim had to be at a conference and I went to see a friend, and then planned to go into New York to meet Jim and have dinner with friends. It was pouring rain for most of ...

It’s the Ghost month, the 7th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The time when ghosts from the spirit world wander around earth. The Ghost Festival will be celebrated on 15th August this year.
Supposedly the “gates of hell” are open and people are very afraid of hospitals this time of the year. You won’t find believers going for elective surgery this month and in fact will avoid hospitals as far as possible.
We blogged about the The Hungry Ghost Effect where perhaps we see more critically ill cases during this period and this could be in turn be due to people not wanting to go to hospital until they are really really ill.
I am told by surgical and orthopod colleagues that there are “more accidents” this time of the year. Now I am not aware of any concr...

“Basically, if you can learn to control your own inner experience, then you can fundamentally alter your experience of life,” says cognitive [thought] neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Saksida.
This international calendar of events will guide you to special events happening offline in your community during Brain Awareness Week, March 10-16.
Online, learn more about things like sugar addiction, smoking and schizophrenia, migraines, how stress hormones affect depression (did you think it was all about serotonin?) or the nitty gritty world of astrocytes and axons: I highly recommend the Brain Briefings series offered by the Society for Neuroscience. These two-page publications (download PDFs or get a free subscription by post) are written for a general audience but pack a lot of potent i...

Doctors, which have so many obligations in their life circles (hospital, outpatient clinic, personal life etc.) can find this tool very convenient. It has the option for searching others who makes their calendar in public. Everyone can choose such kind of option for his calendars or one specific calendar of his total calendars groups. You can use it even as an additive tool for built community ( example : research community). Indeed web 2.0 tool that has great usability to the medical sector. (Source: Medical 2.0)

Alli Flowers of MyTreo.net has come up with a great article on Agendus Calendar Capabilities
I don’t use a dedicated patient appointment software - simply Outlook on my Desktop and Agendus Premium on my Treo 680.
Despite having used Agendus for so long, there’s always something new to learn. I discovered a feature from the article - if you place a “-” prior to a Note item in an Agenda meeting, it becomes a handy Checkbox!

When scheduling appointments for patients, the Free time finder is also another useful feature of Agendus.
Things getting too busy and hectic for you? Get organized with Agendus, now available for PalmOS, Windows (Outlook and Palm Desktop Editions) and Pocket PCs! (Source: The Palmdoc Chronicles)
