It's been an incredible year for me of self-discovery and development. This sounds incredibly cliche I know, but I really feel like now I have 'arrived'.Every year I promise my family, this is it, this year is the year that MedWorm really makes a success of itself. But really I was trying to convince myself. This year I don't even need to say it, because I know it, which is the most wonderful feeling. Like this really is the beginning of the exciting journey I was struggling to start.Over 4 years I've been working on MedWorm. What have I been doing in all that time? Developing. Not just developing the code - of course I have been doing plenty of that. But I have been developing as a person.I remember reading Peter Jones's autobiography Tycoon some time back and being slightly frustrated wit...

Lately I’ve been seen here and there, writing articles for various online publications. Because I have many diverse interests, I tend to write on a variety of different places on a bunch of different topics.
Here are some of the places I’ve written recently.

Lots of people strive to have “simple” solutions for managing their work and life, but for me, it’s not that simple. For me, creativity, organization, and life are anything but simple, and managing them is a delicate process that constantly changes . I recently had an article published on the Evernote Blog that chronicles how I incorporate Evernote into my hodge-podge workflow. (Evernote is the bubble gum and bailing wire that holds my life together.) Read more

I was invited into the local BBC Radio station yesterday, for a half hour interview on what motivated me to get involved with campaigning. Apparently they were looking for 'inspirational' people and I ticked all the right boxes! That's got to be one of the best compliments I have had in my life :)Of course if meant taking half a day off work, and all the nerves that go with it, but I figured it would be a good experience that would help build my confidence, plus I really did think I had a story that should be told.I actually really enjoyed it. Justin Leigh did the interview (stepping in for the usual presenter - Justin is the one you usually see on Spotlight tv). He was incredibly nice, and made me feel at ease straight away - obviously a very skilled presenter. If you ever get the chance t...

He agrees that the climate is changing, but questions whether it is us that are causing it or whether it is happening naturally. He says ‘I have a confession, which will disappoint some. I have tried really heard to buy into the hard-core green agenda over the past few years but something inside prevents me from going the whole way. I realise that pumping carbon into our atmosphere can hardly be a good thing, but is it really causing a change in weather patterns of this awesome globe on which we live? We are honored to have Senator Barbara Boxer share with Courage Campaign members her commitment to strip the horrific Stupak Amendment from any healthcare reform bill and pass true health care reform. Her message is powerful. We need to show her — and the nation — that thousands and thousands of us stand with her by signing the petition. –Rick Jacobs, Chair, Courage Campaign
Dear Friend,

Ten days ago, the House passed the Stupak Amendment, which would be one of the biggest setbacks to women’s health in recent decades - unless we stand together and stop it.
That’s why we are launching a petition at FightForWomensHealth.com, because women must not be denied access to safe and legal medical procedures.

You may also have read about my emotional crisis as I felt the reality of my own mortality during my fight with swine flu at the same time as I was questioning what my response to evil (ie, the massacre in Rwanda and the bombing of innocent children in Gaza) could and should be.You may have spotted my moment of liberation when I came to understand that the evil in this world comes about from the indifference of the good, the lack of positive action and intervention by the strong, healthy, wealthy and free on behalf of the weak, sick, poor and persecuted people of this world. This convi...

Dear friends and colleagues,
I am reaching out to you today to invite you to join the World AIDS Day “Testing Millions” campaign. A global coalition is working hard to make HIV testing free and accessible with linkages to antiretroviral treatment (ART). Be a part of this worldwide movement to conquer AIDS.
We at AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) believe that the best way to reach the estimated 33 million people living with HIV/AIDS is to identify those who do not know they are infected and link them to treatment. This is also the best route to combating the spread of the disease, as it is believed that the source of the majority of new infections are people who are HIV positive, but do not know it.
Clearly, testing in much greater numbers is urgently needed. AHF’s Testing Milli...

Reason being I have so many things going round my mind I wasn't sure which issue to write about first, and of course it all takes time, which is forever in short supply. This post explains a fundamental belief that I have recently consolidated that underlies many of my motivations, and other posts that I wish to write, hence I decided this would be the best place to start. This is my belief:It is the inaction of the good that allows the bad to happen.Put it another way:'Minding your own business' or 'turning a blind eye' makes you guilty of the bad that occurs, that could have otherwise been avoided with your intervention. When talking of all the bad things that happen in this world, many people conclude that there is no God, or at least not a loving God.
When we hear about wellness we often think that means going to the doctor, but the health of your house can also cause troubles. USA Today reports that “one in three homes in U.S. metropolitan areas have at least one problem such as water leaks, peeling paint, holes or rodents that could harm residents’ health or safety.” If your house has these issues, it could lead to health problems, such allergies and asthma.

As a result, the U.S. Surgeon General has been pushing for a “call to action” to get houses (and therefore, people) in better shape throughout the country.

make & wear a white knot on inauguration day

On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as our next President. Rick Warren has been asked to provide the invocation. Rick Warren helped pass Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage in California and took away people’s rights to marry the one that they love. 3.	Tie a double knot in the center of the ribbon. Pulling the fir...

This election season, like any other, has seen its share of vote-based accu...

HIV and Imprisonment
Project UNSHACKLE (Uniting a Network on Sentencing and HIV/AIDS with Community Knowledge Leading our Efforts) is made up of formerly imprisoned people, grassroots leaders, researchers, HIV policy advocates, prison reform and social justice organizers, coalition-building veterans and other allies working together to bridge the nexus between HIV and mass imprisonment. It’s no coincidence that the communities most impacted by mass imprisonment (especially in urban areas and the Southern states) also have the highest rates of HIV infection in the country. Confronting the nexus between HIV and mass imprisonment is important to anyone interested in a comprehensive HIV prevention strategy.

ELECTION 2008: THE AIDS VOTE COUNTS!
A non-partisan voter registration & get-out-the-vote toolkit
Communities with low voting rates – including people of color and low-income communities — are also disproportionately affected by HIV.
We can change this! HIV/AIDS organizations, including non-profit organizations, can legally register and turn out voters for elections. This is a non-partisan and simple activity that any organization can do!
It is critically important to make sure the voices of people impacted by HIV are heard this election year.
On behalf of the Campaign for a National AIDS Strategy, CHAMP helped create this basic Voter Registration / Get Out The Vote toolkit that any organization can use to help your staff, clients, and community...

Starting this week, caravans will travel different routes across the country to Mississippi to demand a that our next President, John McCain or Barack Obama, develop a national plan to end the HIV & AIDS epidemic. Through almost thirty years of enduring a disease that is both preventable and treatable, we have not enough to either prevent or treat a disease that has claimed almost a million lives domestically. Infection rates are on the rise and life-saving care and treatment aren’t available to everyone who needs them. We must demand accountability from our country’s elected, religious, civic, and social leaders to take a stand against homophobia, stigma, discrimination, and ignorance. Protesters Call on Obama to Stand Up for Medical Marijuana
On Thursday, August 28, 2008, medical marijuana patients and supporters will march in front of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO, calling on Barak Obama to change federal laws that prohibit medical cannabis in the twelve states where voters approved its use. “This will be the first national medical cannabis protest since patients and activists gathered in Washington, DC, in April 2000,” said parade organizer Richard Eastman, who has been using medical cannabis to treat the symptoms of AIDS since 1994.

South Central Community Rallies To End The DEA Raids
In emergency response to the 7 DEA raids last week on medical cannabis dispensaries and a private residence, community members in South Central Los Angeles will gather for a peaceful rally asking Congressman John Conyers, Jr., to open congressional hearings and have rational discussion on medical cannabis.
Four of the seven raids last week occurred in South Central Los Angeles including a raid on the home of longtime area resident and the dispensaries’ owner, Virgil Grant. Patients contend that the DEA’s tactics are nothing short of thuggery – seizing cash and cannabis as well as bank accounts without due process.

As some of you may have heard, six medical marijuana dispensaries were raided in the Los Angeles area on Thursday. In response to this latest attack on Medical Marijuana, we are calling on our members to join us on Tuesday as we stand up to this latest threat and voice our opposition to the DEA.
You can help turn out a crowd for Tuesday’s protest at the DEA Offices/Federal Building downtown. We need to turn out a crowd to make an impression on the DEA and the community. Be sure to invite your friends and loved ones. You can also take a more active role by downloading the protest flyer at http://www.asaaction.org/files/stopdea.pdf print a copy of the full page, which includes four flyers. An equinox in astronomy is that moment in time (not a whole day) when the centre of the Sun can be observed to be directly above the Earth’s equator, occurring around March 20 and September 23 each year.
More technically, at an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (i.e. declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points—the vernal point and the autumnal point. By extension, the term equinox may be used to denote an equinoctial point.
There is either an equinox (autumn and spring) or a solstice (summer and winter) on approximately the 21st day of the last month of every quarter of the calendar year. On a day which has an equinox, the centre of the Sun wil...

Dear Friends of the International Carnival of Pozitivities (ICP):
It is a tremendous pleasure to announce the publication of edition 2.9 of the ICP at Creampuff Revolution. Creampuff, a.k.a., Roro, who hails from Vancouver, is our first repeat host from Canada. I encourage you to bookmark this edition and visit it over time so that you can enjoy each of the contributions from the world of HIV/AIDS. I hope that you will also join me in thanking Roro for her work this month. We “met” about 2 years ago during the NHL Hockey Championship between Edmonton and the Carolina Hurricanes and have been fast friends since despite some rather competitive invocation of mojo to make our teams win the Stanley Cup. Roro’s sense of compassion combined with her sense of humor makes me quite happy to ...

we are excerpted in spare change:
Richard Kearns, the poet-activist at aids-write.org, writes about two issues that at first seem entirely unrelated: the CDC’s description of AIDS, and the designation of Daylight Saving Time. After his requisite lovely poem, . . .
The implicit point that Richard makes with this juxtaposition of concepts is that definitions are powerful. The words we use to describe something can mean the difference between health and disease, between light and darkness. Jerry’s health status was exactly the same before and after the CDC’s pronouncement, but the new definition of a healthy t-cell count was essentially a death sentence. The sun is still in the same position in the sky as it would have been, whether we call it 6:00 or 7:00, but we can dela...

2008 Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2008
Theme: Honoring our Sisters: Women Living with HIV/AIDS
March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The purpose of this annual day is to raise awareness of the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls and encourage women and girls to take Action. The theme for 2008 is “Honoring Our Sisters: Women Living with HIV/AIDS”.
Historically, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has affected more men than women, but women are being increasingly affected. Since 1985 the proportion of estimated AIDS cases diagnosed among women has more than tripled, from 7% in 1985 to 27% in 2005. And although each year more men than women become infected with HIV, this gap is slowly cl...

Earlier this year, we experienced outrage when we saw news coverage [NPR, LATimes, aids-write.org] that included videotaped footage of Kaiser Permanente’s Bellflower hospital dumping a senile, 63-year-old homeless woman named Carol Reyez, clad only in her thin cotton hospital gown and socks, on San Pedro Street in skid row street near the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles.

	Dear Assemblymember Berg,
I am a 56-year-old gay man alive with AIDS in Los Angeles for more than 20 years. I live in an assisted care institution. I began drafting this letter to protest Governor Schwarznegger’s proposed program cuts to FY2008-09 California HIV/AIDS and Medi-Cal budgets this past Friday (2-15-08) in the Emergency Room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Tuesday (2-12-08), my doctor removed the g-tube we implanted in October (10-12-07), when, for the second time in four months, it kicked off a life-threatening abcess that required hospitalization. Why was th...

AS CDC Prepares to Release Alarming New HIV Rates; Governor Should Cut Bureaucracy, Corporate Loopholes
10 JANUARY 2008
LOS ANGELES - AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) today urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to reconsider and reverse $11 million of proposed budget cuts in AIDS services that will reduce and threaten vital lifesaving care and services for Californians living with HIV/AIDS as he seeks to close a $14 billion deficit in the state budget. Late last year, the Governor asked state department and program heads to submit proposed 2008 budgets which included across the board cuts of ten percent. AHF is urging the governor to instead seek budget cost savings by cutting bureaucracy and eliminating corporate loopholes rathe...

These include: an additional $4 million requested by advocates for the Therapeutic Monitoring Program; $5.6 million to prevention and education; and $3 million for care services. Epidemiology and surveillance also received an additional $2 million in 2007 to boost HIV surveillance efforts; it is doubtful that funding will be renewed.

Communities Nationwide Hold Events to Raise Awareness
February 7, 2007 marks the seventh annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD). This national mobilization effort is designed to encourage African Americans across the United States and Territorial Areas to get educated, get tested, get involved and get treated for HIV/AIDS, as it continues to devastate Black communities. Special events such as free HIV/AIDS testing, prayer breakfasts, town hall meetings and memorial services will be held throughout the country.

I have attended countless political meetings about medical cannabis and protested outside dozens of DEA raids at medical cannabis facilities all over California. It meant the world to my colleagues and I at California Patients Group (CPG) to see the tremendous outpouring of support in our time of crisis today. More than a dozen protesters joined Dege Coutee in blockading the DEA at CPG today.
Tell Your Senators To Reject Holsinger’s Nomination as Surgeon General!
Action Alert via AIDS Project Los Angeles
	Greetings,
On May 24, President Bush nominated Dr. James Holsinger to serve as 18th Surgeon General of the United States. As America’s chief health educator, the Surgeon General must be devoted to helping all Americans lead healthy lives and must be committed to science. Among the stated duties of the post is to provide leadership in promoting health initiatives such as HIV prevention efforts.
In the past, Dr. Holsinger has exhibited a prejudice against homosexual men. His efforts to put a scientific veneer on his prejudices (as evidenced in a 1991 paper for the United Methodist Church) call into serious question his ability to advocate for sensible HIV care an...

The following document was drafted by the Center for HIV Law and Policy, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, and Lambda Legal. It is widely endorsed by organizations around the country (including aids-write.org), and affirms that HIV testing must always be voluntary, confidential or anonymous, and accompanied by clear and complete information and counseling both before and after the test. People who receive positive test results must be connected to appropriate follow-up care.
“People who test negative for antibodies to HIV must also receive follow-up counseling,” explained Catherine Hanssens, Executive Director of the Center for HIV Law and Policy. “About half of all new HIV infections were transmitted by newly-infected people who have not yet developed the antibodies that rapid testi...

Politics and Policy | California Counties Facing Federal HIV/AIDS Funding Cuts; Pelosi Sends Letter to HHS Secretary
[May 24, 2007]
Programs for HIV-positive residents in three California counties are facing cuts in some services after HHS officials announced funding allocations that will result in an annual loss of $8.6 million in federal funds for the counties, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties receive funding for HIV/AIDS services under the Ryan White Program. However, the Ryan White Reauthorization Bill (HR 6143), which President Bush signed into law in December 2006, redistributes some funds from cities to rural areas.

from ACT-UP ny: 1983 denver AIDS principles
Ever since people with AIDS stormed the stage at a Denver conference in 1983 and demanded self-determination, grassroots AIDS activism has taken its lead from the people most affected.
There is no better way to cite the history of the PWA self-empowerment movement that to quote the principles articulated in Denver in 1983. They are as relevant and powerful today as they were then.
	THE DENVER PRINCIPLES
(Statement from the advisory committee of the People with AIDS)
We condemn attempts to label us as “victims,” a term which implies defeat, and we are only occasionally “patients,” a term which implies passivity, helplessness, and dependence upon the care of others. We are “People With AIDS.”

Today close to 200 patients, providers, and advocates took to the streets in front of the LAPD Van Nuys Police Station [6240 Sylmar St., Van Nuys] to demonstrate against the LAPD’s absurd assault on The Karma Collective. It was in incredible turnout for a Monday with only Friday’s notice. Because the LAPD claimed the edibles they found inside Karma Collective were illegal, activists chanted “Make No Mistake, We’ll Still Bake! Make No Mistake, We’ll Still Bake!” and held signs that read “Cannabis to Eat, Eat to Live” and “Let Them Eat Cake!”

At one point the crowd dumped hundred of edibles in front of the police station to demonstrate how insignificant the M&M Cookies and fudge brownies truly were. It was only apropos for the patients to eat the edibles in an act...

Dear Colleagues -
We must work together as we fight some of the most powerful law enforcement agencies in the world – the LAPD and the DEA.
Yesterday afternoon I witnessed one of the most macabre abuses of our laws by law enforcement. Karma Collective was broken into over night – Thursday morning. When other businesses began to arrive which open earlier than Karma, they realized that there was outer damage to the building, the main communication wires to the all units had been cut and Karma’s front door was shattered.
A business owner called the landlord and either that business or the landlord called the police to file a report for insurance purposes. Karma did not contact the police themselves. Two officers arrived at the same time I did. I happened to have an appointment with K...

Hello, all. There is already an effort under way in several California cities to promote self-regulation at medical cannabis collectives and cooperatives. The Greater Los Angeles Caregivers’ Alliance (GLACA) is well into the process of developing guidelines. Visit http://www.CaregiversAlliance.org to see the draft protocols.
In December of last year, ASA staff met with operators from all over the state in Burbank to discuss best practices for collectives. One of the decisions that emerged from this meeting was to create regional organizations like GLACA to promote self-regulation and protect patients. I have copied some information about this effort below.
There is a tremendous need for collectives and cooperatives to adhere to professional standards and address community concerns....

the public hospitals that we’ve rebuilt — not OUR hospital which is dead in the middle — all those other places, those gleaming, shiny white buildings — they’re all public institutions, so when people say “you can’t work with the public health sector or the ministry of health,” don’t believe it. in fact, we need to do that . . . each of these places have all been rebuilt by — b...

Three of every five diabetics in the U.S. experience at least one significant complication from the disease, such as heart disease, stroke, eye damage, chronic kidney disease or foot problems leading to amputation, according to research presented Tuesday at a meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Los Angeles Times reports. • HEALTH CARE — Schwarzenegger has made expanding health insurance to the 6.5 million Californians who lack it his big issue this year and outlined a plan to do it. But it has yet to be put into detailed form, and its major provisions — especially taxes to be imposed on employers and health providers to pay for it — have generated immense division among the many “stakeholders.” One big question is whether Schwarzenegger would settle for an incremental, less costly plan.

[Apr 11, 2007]

Abbott Laboratories on Tuesday said that it plans to reduce the cost of its antiretroviral drug Kaletra in Thailand and more than 40 low- and low-middle-income countries by more than half, the Chicago Tribune reports. [abbott is headquartered in the chicago area —rk] The company said it will provide Kaletra in the countries for $1,000 per patient annually, which is less than the cost of generic versions of the drug, instead of the current price of $2,200 (Miller, Chicago Tribune, 4/10). I heard from two of our highest officials why they oppose medical marijuana farmacies in Santa Monica. They fear the wrong people will get the drugs. Maybe we should shut down Longs Drugs. Are the wrong people walking into Rite Aid and falsifying a prescription for Valium? Any cursory exam of the medical marijuana farmacies in this state will show that the rules are quite stringent and that a legal prescription is required. The wrong people (those without prescriptions) will find it just as hard to get California Gold from a legal dispensary as they would to get Vicodin from CVS. It is just another false issue raised so people can inflict their drug prejudices on all of us. The State voted yes, the City voted yes, now it is time for o...

In a defeat for the Bush administration, the US Supreme Court ruled yesterday that greenhouse gases are pollutants and ordered federal environmental officials to reconsider their refusal to limit emissions from new cars and trucks.
The justices’ 5-to-4 decision did not go so far as to require the US Environmental Protection Agency to regulate the emission of heat-trapping gases such as carbon dioxide from motor vehicles. Rather, the court directed the agency to take a new look at the gases. If officials determine the gases contribute to global warming and therefore h...

Court tells Bush to cool it
April 3, 2007
President Bush pledged during the 2000 campaign to regulate carbon dioxide but then reversed himself once in office under pressure from the energy and auto industries. Yesterday’s embarrassment should cause Bush to honor that pledge and direct his EPA to curb vehicles’ carbon dioxide emissions. However, the most immediate effect of yesterday’s ruling might be to strengthen the authority California has claimed to insist on strict emission limits in cars sold there. Ten other states, including Massachusetts, plan to adopt the same standards. Since there is no practical system for capturing carbon dioxide in cars’ exhaust, the emission limits would in effect force auto makers to improve their vehicles’ ef...

By David Mikhail
March 14, 2007
Echoing the party’s pledges to address high drug costs, House Democrats are looking into long-asserted price-gouging allegations surrounding a key drug in the treatment of AIDS.

The Oversight and Government Reform Committee is considering holding hearings to investigate whether pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories artificially inflated the price of its AIDS drug, Norvir, in 2003, according to a committee staffer.

The aide confirmed that the panel, chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), has been probing the issue during the new legislative session but could not say when hearings would occur if the committee decided to proceed with them.

Abbott Laboratories Increases Norvir Price Fivefold
By John S. James
December 26, 2003
comment: drug development in light of abbott’s fivefold price hike
In addition to specific remedies, we also need a new look at the big picture of how medicines are developed.
People died in the clinical trials and clinical experience that led to the modern use of boosted protease inhibitors. Patients need options, but now one company wants to take away much of the benefit of what has been learned, in order to increase its market share and profit. Congress has given big pharmaceutical corporations a monopoly on life and death, but this system cannot work unless the power is used with some restraint and respect for public interest.
