The Cause of Rioting? That’s Easy: Rioters!

British Prime Minister David Cameron attributed the recent riots in his to “the slow-motion moral collapse that has taken place in parts of our country these past few generations.” The message may seem vaguely situationist at first blush, as Cameron emphasizes the problem of a “broken society.”
But what he really seems to care about are the bad “choices” made by selfish, irresponsible individuals.
Cameron’s comments resemble remarks he’s made in the past. In 2008, according to one account, he declared that “people who are fat, poor or addicted to drugs could only have themselves to blame.”
It’s a one-size-fits-all ideology: If you have problems, look in the mirror!
To be fair, Cameron does acknowledge one situational...

By Jim HarperOfficials in London are looking everywhere but the mirror for places to affix blame for the recent riots. Beyond the immediate-term answer, individual rioters themselves, the target of choice seems to be “social media.” Prime Minister David Cameron is considering banning Facebook, Twitter, and Blackberry Messenger to disable people from organizing themselves or reporting the locations and activity of the police.

Sperm can be quite surprising sometimes!
Men produce 1500 sperm every second, and depending on the environment surrounding them, they can be fast or slow. (This is quite independent of how fast or slow a guy gets to orgasm!) We have always known that nutrition is important to health, but we underestimated how important vitamins and minerals are to the speed of sperm and enhancing reproductive success.

In sperm and sex, most men start out pretty fast but peeter out quickly. Sperm ejaculated in the vagina may last a week, but outside the body survives only a few hours. Average time to ejaculation during intercourse – 2 -3 minutes! All in all, this is a sprint race to say the least!

Cameron, what’s good for making babies may not be that good for making beautiful locks.

By Christopher PrebleWhen President Obama meets with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London, they should focus on the two wars that involve both the U.S. and British militaries (Afghanistan and Libya). But these discussions will take place in the context of diminishing British military capability.
At a time when the United States should be shedding some of the burdens of policing the globe, and encouraging other countries to step forward to defend themselves, the British are moving in the opposite direction. They are cutting their military, and tacitly becoming more dependent upon U.S. power. The end result will be a United Kingdom that is less able to assist us in the future.
The United States today spends far more on its military than does the United Kingdom, and the gap is like...

By Daniel J. MitchellA new study from the Adam Smith Institute in the United Kingdom provides overwhelming evidence that class-warfare tax policy is grossly misguided and self-destructive. The authors examine the likely impact of the 10-percentage point increase in the top income tax rate, which was imposed as an election-year stunt by former prime minister Gordon Brown and then kept in place by his feckless successor, David Cameron.
They find that boosting the top tax rate to 50 percent will slow economic performance. And because of both macroeconomic and microeconomic responses, tax revenues over the next 10 years are likely to drop by the equivalent of more than $550 billion. Here's a key paragraph from the executive summary of the new study.
The country is suffering from a 50%-plus ...

By Daniel J. MitchellLondon was just hit by heavy riots as part of a protest against the "deep" and "savage" budget cuts of the Cameron government. This is not the first time the UK has endured riots. The welfare lobby, bureaucrats, and other recipients of taxpayer largesse are becoming increasingly agitated that their gravy train may be derailed.
The vast majority of protesters have been peaceful, but some hooligans took the opportunity to wreak havoc. These nihilists apparently call themselves anarchists, but are too ignorant to understand the giant disconnect of adopting that title while at the same time rioting for bigger government and more redistribution. My anarcho-capitalist friends must be embarrassed by the potential linkage with these hooligans.

By Walter OlsonIn Britain, the coalition government of David Cameron hopes to stimulate much-needed hiring by reducing state interference with private employers’ right to choose their own workforces. Per the Telegraph, Cameron “hopes that relaxed employment laws will help to boost the private sector and encourage firms to take on thousands of new workers.”
For all the high hopes, the changes are in fact quite modest. Newly hired workers will wait two years, rather than one, before obtaining the power to challenge later firings before official tribunals. To discourage doomed or trivial claims, disgruntled workers will be charged a fee for resorting to a tribunal. The smallest employers will be exempted from some portions of the law, and so forth.

By Daniel J. MitchellWe’ve been spending too much time on elections, so let’s get back to pointing out inane, foolish, and destructive government policies. Our latest example comes from the United Kingdom, where politicians are pushing airline ticket taxes to punitive levels and harming the tourism industry. But the real lesson from this story is that it is very dangerous to give politicians a new revenue source.
The airline ticket tax was first imposed by a (supposedly) Conservative Party government in 1994 at a maximum rate of 10 pounds. During the Blair/Brown Labor Party reign, the tax was boosted to a maximum rate of 50 pounds. Now, the new government, led by ostensible Conservative David Cameron, is pushing the maximum tax up to 75 pounds (more than $120) per ticket.

By Christopher PrebleYesterday, Prime Minister David Cameron announced Britain’s biggest defense cuts since World War II. The cuts affect the British military across the board.
The Army will shed 7,000 troops; the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force will each lose 5,000 personnel; the total workforce in the Ministry of Defence, including civilians, will contract by 42,000. The Navy’s destroyer fleet will shrink from 23 to 19. Two aircraft carriers — already under construction — will be completed, but one of the two will be either mothballed or sold within a few years. Whether the one remaining flattop in the British fleet will actually deploy with an operational fixed-wing aircraft is an open question. They’ve decided to jettison their Harriers; a technological marvel ...

By Daniel J. MitchellHere are a handful of the posters being used in the United Kingdom to fight the perversely-destructive proposal to increase tax rates on capital gains. (for an explanation of why the tax should be abolished, see here)
Which one is your favorite? I’m partial to the last one because of my interest in tax competition.
But this isn’t just a popularity contest. With Obama pushing for higher capital gains rate in America, it’s important to find the most persuasive ways of educating people about the damage of class-warfare tax policy.
By the way, “CGT” is capital gains tax, and “Vince” and “Cable” refers to Vince Cable, one of the politicians pushing this punitive class-warfare scheme.

By Daniel J. MitchellAccording to news coverage, United Kingdom Prime Minister Cameron is imposing deep and savage budget cuts. I was interviewed by the BBC recently, for instance, and asked whether 25 percent spending reductions were too harsh. And here’s an excerpt from a New York Times story that is very representative of the news coverage.
Like a shipwrecked sailor on a starvation diet, the new British coalition government is preparing to shrink down to its bare bones as it cuts expenditures by $130 billion over the next five years and drastically scales back its responsibilities. The result, said the Institute for Fiscal Studies, a research group, will be “the longest, deepest sustained period of cuts to public services spending” since World War II. …Public-sector unio...

Googled any celebrities lately? If you’ve searched Cameron Diaz, you might want to check your computer for viruses. According to McAfee, she is the celebrity most likely to generate malicious sites when you enter her name into a search engine. Coming in just behind Cameron are Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Gisele Bündchen, and Brad Pitt.
Cyber attackers use celebrities to steer people to sites that host malware. They are also starting to hide malware in Twitter posts in tiny urls, so be on the lookout and make sure your security software is updated.

Actress Rosario Dawson has gathered some fellow Hollywood luminaries (including Cameron Diaz and Padma Lakshmi) to help fight Arizona’s recent immigration law with a new PSA campaign. The outrageous law allows police to stop and question people in Arizona who look like they may be illegal immigrants.
Dawson’s campaign “United We Win” will launch in September through her organization Voto Latino, which encourages Latino youth and young adults to unify on issues that impact their lives. Dawson hopes that uniting these youth and registering them to vote will help put a stop to divisive racial profiling. Check out a behind-the-scenes preview of the upcoming PSA here:

Autrey borrowed a pen and used it to keep Hollopeter’s jaw open. Understandably wobbly post-seizure, Hollopeter fell onto the tracks. Autrey saw the lights of the oncoming train, gave a stranger his daughters to hold, and jumped down. He protected Hollopeter by lying on top of him. The height of their bodies on top of each other is 20-1/2 inches; the t...

By Daniel J. MitchellBarack Obama and Angela Merkel are the two main characters in what is being portrayed as a fight between American “stimulus” and European “austerity” at the G-20 summit meeting in Canada. My immediate instinct is to cheer for the Europeans. After all, “austerity” presumably means cutting back on wasteful government spending. Obama’s definition of “stimulus,” by contrast, is borrowing money from China and distributing it to various Democratic-leaning special-interest groups.

But appearances can be deceiving. Austerity, in the European context, means budget balance rather than spending reduction. As such, David Cameron’s proposal to boost the U.K.’s value-added tax from 17.5 percent to 20 percent is su...

By Daniel J. MitchellAs the chart below indicates, the United Kingdom has a large budget deficit solely because government spending has increased to record levels (OECD data). Unfortunately, the new Tory-Liberal coalition government has decided that taxpayers should be punished for all the over-spending that occurred when the Labor government was in charge.

The Telegraph reports that the top capital gains rate will jump to 28 percent, up from 18 percent (the new government foolishly thinks this will result in more revenue). But the biggest change is that the value-added tax will increase to 20 percent.
By Daniel J. MitchellThe chart below shows everything you need to know about why the United Kingdom is a fiscal disaster. Over the past 10 years, the burden of government spending has skyrocketed from 36.6 percent of GDP to more than 53 percent of GDP. Taxes, meanwhile, have remained largely unchanged, averaging about 40 percent of GDP.
Since the OECD numbers show that the fiscal crisis in the U.K. is solely the result of a bloated public sector, the obvious solution is … you guessed it, higher taxes.
David Cameron’s new coalition government has announced support for a higher capital gains tax and is signalling that this will be followed by an increase in the value-added tax.
There are some proposals to curtail the growth of spending, including some pay cuts for Prime Minster C...

By adminBritain may have given the world freedom as we understand it (i.e. see The Liberty of Ancients Compared with that of Moderns by Benjamin Constant), but you would not know it from the last prime ministerial debate that took place last Thursday. The candidates (Conservative David Cameron, Labour’s Gordon Brown and Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg) used the word “freedom” only 2 times. They said the word “free” 5 times, but all in the context of the supposedly “free” goodies, which they promised to lavish on the electorate. Words “responsible” and “responsibility” fared somewhat better (4 times). But the winning words were “fair” and “fairness” that were mentioned 22 times — almost always in connection with taxing the rich. Here is a typical example:

It’s pretty tough to miss the pro-environmentalism theme in Avatar. The revered Tree of Souls, the fight to save the Na’vi woodlands from being destroyed in the name of greed, the general respect and love that the Na’vi have for their natural surroundings — writer-director James Cameron isn’t exactly coy with his messaging.
Continuing with this trend, Cameron is releasing the Avatar DVD on Earth Day, April 22. An out-and-proud environmentalist, Cameron told Katherine Monk of The Montreal Gazette that he knows one movie won’t altogether save the earth, but “if people are thinking and talking about it, and are emotionally open to it, that’s the point at which you can ask people to introduce change into their lives and the way they do things.”

By Andrew J. CoulsonThe mystery man quoted in the title is none other than David Cameron, head of the British Conservative party.
It isn’t that Cameron likes the ineffeciency, social conflict, and unresponsiveness to parents that often characterize state schooling. It’s that he ”would like to see… choice and autonomy and diversity in the state sector.”
I would like to see winged-gazelles, sunny winters in Seattle, and a brilliant remake of The Thin Man series.
We’ll both be waiting a good long time.
Surely the Conservative party has a competent economist who could explain to Mr. Cameron why state schools tend to lack the features we take for granted in the free enterprise sector, and that by nationalizing more of Britain’s independent schools he...

An ancient saying states that just as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend to show rage or worthy purpose. What could this mean? Could anger be an emotion that reveals hidden truths about a person?
In her classic book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron elaborates on the ability of anger to disclose concealed aspects of a person’s direction and purpose in life. One needs to translate the message that anger is sending. It is trying to bring something to the light to be looked at and examined. Usually one tries to conceal or bury anger, feeling the social restraints and consequences. While sensitivity to not hurt others is valid, an individual’s feeling of anger needs private examination. Anger must not master us, but it can become a tool for self-revelation...

A fascinating clip. David Cameron caught on the hop and squirming so much that he forgets Lord McColl's first name. Once, long ago, Dr Crippen was Lord McColl's houseman. I can still remember his first name. It's Ian, not Hugh.+++++++++++++Yesterday, in Andrew Lansley caught troughing, we looked in detail at some of the activities of Care UK, and at Andrew Lansley's acceptance of large sums of money, given by the wife of the Chairman of Care UK, to help him run his private office.Today, I have put the question "Should Andrew Lansley take money from the private health care industry" to Tim Montgomorie's Conservative Home. The response is here.We await Cameron's response to Andrew Lansley's office finance with interest. (Source: NHS Blog Doctor)

By David BoazIn the Los Angeles Times today, I write about “Avatar”, which has just become the biggest-grossing movie in Hollywood history, and how conservatives have missed the issue at its core:
Conservatives see this as anti-American, anti-military and anti-corporate or anti-capitalist. But they’re just reacting to the leftist ethos of the film.
They fail to see what’s really happening. People have traveled to Pandora to take something that belongs to the Na’vi: their land and the minerals under it. That’s a stark violation of property rights, the foundation of the free market and indeed of civilization….
“Avatar” is like a space opera of the Kelo case, which went to the Supreme Court in 2005. Peaceful people defend their property ag...

By Daniel GriswoldThree items in the news this week remind us why we should be glad we live in a more global economy. While American consumers remain cautious, American companies and workers are finding increasing opportunities in markets abroad:

Sales of General Motors vehicles continue to slump in the United States, but they are surging in China. The company announced this week that sales in China of GM-branded cars and trucks were up 67 percent in 2009, to 1.8 million vehicles. If current trends continue, within a year or two GM will be selling more vehicles in China than in the United States.
James Cameron’s 3-D movie spectacular “Avatar” just surpassed $1 billion in global box-office sales. Two-thirds of its revenue has come from abroad, with France, Germany, and Russia the lea...

Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way and Vein of Gold, books about the process of writing through morning pages and journaling, has tackled dieting in her new book The Writing Diet.
A big fan of her previous two book on writing, I was interested on seeing how she incorporates writing into weight loss. Turns out she does it quite easily. Julia suggests that by using writing as a primary tool, you can figure out what’s causing your weight problem and then fix it.
Full of assignments and creative exercises, the book really makes you stop and think about the choices you have been making and the choices you could make.
It’s a comfortable read, offering gentle guidance through your journey of weight loss.

This is impressive and decisive leadership from David Cameron. Action not words. Action not consultations. The MPs expenses scandal is one of the most difficult problems a party leader has ever faced. It is hard to know what more he could have done. A full and frank apology. No prevarication. Conservative MPs instructed to pay back all excessive claims immediately or face the sack. Dr Crippen is impressed. Heavens, even the DK is impressed.Compare it with this:and then thisThen chose your leader. (Source: NHS Blog Doctor)

With a annual budget now topping £2 billion a week, there are plenty of economies to be made in healthcare. And yet, like opposing the 50% (actually 63.5%) new top rate of tax, David Cameron is between a rock and hard place if he suggests cuts in the NHS. Dr Crippen writes elsewhere to suggest to David Cameron that he could make a start by sacking an NHS BLOG DOCTOR favourite. (Source: NHS Blog Doctor)

It may be unconventional to post a promo trailer on a genetics site, but I’ve been waiting for this film since I first heard of it.
“My Sister’s Keeper” is the story of two young sisters whose lives would be intertwined beyond their control. Kate is the older sister – beautiful, graceful and living with a rare genetic disease called acute promyelocytic leukemia. Anna is three years younger – genetically engineered and conceived to be a genetic match for Kate. Whatever Kate’s body needs – cord blood, blood, bone marrow, kidney – Anna is the donor. How many times can you save your sister’s life?

Boris JohnsonWhat is an alcoholic? I do not know. I never use the word “alcoholic” in a medical, diagnostic context. To most, the word “alcoholic” conjures up a picture of an unshaven man drinking Carlsberg Special Brew at breakfast time, the tin partially concealed in a brown paper bag. Drinkers everywhere take comfort that they have not reached that stage. They may still have a serious problem. When I was a medical student – and at that stage I was partial to a pint, as were most medical students – I had an attachment with a well respected local GP. He drank gargantuan amounts of alcohol. His unit count must have been in three figures. He stopped drinking. Every year. For a month. From 1st to 31st of January. He was quite open about this. “I do it to prove that I am in cont...

I think it’s safe to say that this PSA is just dripping with subtext…

As with most DC PSAs, this one was written by Jack Schiff. Pencils were provided by Lou Cameron.
