A study conducted recently at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center found that experimental drug NVP-BEZ235, which blocks two points of a crucial cancer cell signaling pathway, inhibits the growth of ovarian cancer cells and significantly increases survival in an ovarian cancer mouse model.
I am really excited about serving as the emcee for next week’s Personalized Medicine World Conference in Mountain View, California near San Francisco. I also will be the moderator of a panel discussion on patient empowerment. As I prepare, I am interviewing the panelists and their stories are very inspiring.
One panelist is Bonnie Addario. Bonnie had been an oil company executive in the Bay Area. She began having chest pain. Was it her heart? No. Was it a nerve problem? No. Doctors were stumped. Bonnie was frustrated, but she was also a woman of action — a “powerful patient.” She went on her own for a full body scan. The news was not good. A lung cancer tumor was wrapped around her aorta and other vessels. It was inoperable. But, fortunately, chemotherapy and radiation shrunk t...

Over the past few years, we’ve seen ViziLite, then VELscope, hit the market. Dr. Joe Blaes publicized the importance of oral cancer screening and patient education last year through his editor’s articles in Dental Economics . OralCancerFoundation.org tells us some striking statistics that make oral cancer seem like a significant problem. Over 30K people are diagnosed annually, and 7500 die. Even with increased awareness, early detection, and publicity, the mortality and incidence rates for oral cancer have not decreased.
Now the ADA and CDCP are stepping up their game. Earlier this month, a panel conveniened to discuss how to provide dentists with the best evidience on oral cancer screenings. Read about the panel here. (Source: dental blog for dentists about dentistry)

A coalition of health groups, including some that are backed by the pharmaceutical industry, have joined the heated lobbying battle over the next FDA commish by sending a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary-designate Tom Daschle urging him to pick a person familiar with the industry, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The newly formed FDA Commissioner Coalition is made up of 34 patient and research organizations, most of which receive funding from drugmakers, the paper writes. The coalition’s letter to Daschle didn’t name any candidates but argues the next commissioner should make decisions free from “pressure from elected and appointed officials and from the news media.”
The move comes after weeks of speculation that the list of potential nominees includes ...

Early this year, we learned that the human papilloma virus (HPV-16), a sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer in women, also contributes to the incidence of oral cancer in men. Merck & Co. offers the only HPV vaccine, but it is available for young women, not young men. New research has prompted the company to pursue government approval to extend the inoculation to males, as well.
Usually, oral cancer is thought to be a disease contracted by older people who smoke and drink - those in the high-risk group. The disease commonly affects people who are not considered high risk, though. Oral cancer screenings save lives. Here are the facts:

In the US, oral cancer strikes about 35,000 people per year
In the US, about 7,500 people die from oral cancer each year

First, there was the Gardasil beach towel, an attractive terry velour model that advertised to beachgoers that you’re free of a sexually transmitted disease. A nifty way to tout the advantages of the HPV vaccine.
Now, Merck is trying a new way to grab the attention of teenagers and younger adult women with a specially created line of Gardasil jewelry. As CNBC’s Mike Huckman notes, you can pay $32 for any of four “limited edition” bangles designed by Carolyn Rafaelian, a designer with Alex and Ani. The proceeds will go to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
The Charm4Life campaign is designed to raise awareness of cervical cancer. Gardasil, to be technical about all this, is supposed to thwart the most significant strains of HPV, or human papillomavirus, which can lead t...

This is one way to play connect the dots in the Provenge controversy. Before we explain, let us remind you that Provenge is the prostate-cancer vaccine that was recommended last spring by an FDA panel, but later put on hold after the agency received letters from two panel members urging a go-slow approach. The delay set off a firestorm - the two docs received threats amid allegations of conflicts of interest; and patients and investors in Dendreon, which is developing the vaccine, filed a lawsuit against the FDA, charging agency political intrigue was also involved.
And so it comes to our attention that FDA commish Andy von Eschenbach - who is named in the lawsuit and held responsible by cancer patients for the Provenge delay - has a link, of sorts, to Howard Scher, a prominent oncologist ...
