Ron Paul Talks Sense on Trade

By Sallie JamesPresidential Candidate Ron Paul has a decidedly mixed record on trade policy. He often votes against trade agreements because he sees them as “managed trade” and an interference with true free trade. Well, ok, but that’ s like voting against income tax cuts because you think the IRS shouldn’t exist. I get the point, but c’mon…
In any event, he was the only participant in Thursday night’s debate between the Republican presidential candidates who spoke about trade with any sense at all. As Inside US Trade [subscription required] points out, trade policy was not a prominent theme of the debate, but that didn’t stop Mitt Romney from (again) spouting nonsense about balanced trade:

RIP Max Palevsky, a Man Whose Vast Wealth Helped Stop a War

By David Boaz“Max Palevsky, a pioneer in the computer industry and a founder of the computer-chip giant Intel who used his fortune to back Democratic presidential candidates and to amass an important collection of American Arts and Crafts furniture, died on Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 85,” reports the New York Times.
Palevsky used his vast wealth to influence politics, especially to oppose the Vietnam War. He was one of the liberal mega-givers who made the Eugene McCarthy campaign possible in 1968, along with such people as Stanley Sheinbaum, Stewart Mott, and Martin Peretz. Describing the McCarthy campaign as “shoestring,” Christopher Hitchens added:
When one says “shoestring,” by the way, one is forced to recall that the whole...

Back to the issues after discussing Governor Sarah Palin et al: In a post on Obama and McCain on Autism, Regan noted that Mike Strautmanis, Barack Obama’s Chief Counsel and a personal friend of the Obama family, is the father of an autistic child. In a January 29 conference call on Obama’s disability policy, here’s some of what Strautmanis said:
Barack Obama and I met, and Michele, when I talked my way into a job to be Michele’s paralegal, just about before I was going to graduate from college. Since then we have all been friends. I am married, have three children, one of whom has autism, on the autism spectrum, has autism spectrum disorder.
Back in the spring, remarks by presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama about vaccines and autism caused a bit of a furor. But what else do the candidates think about disability issues?
Senator McCain supports the Combating Autism Act; a search for “disability” on his website reveals this. Senator Obama’s website has a section devoted to disability issues and here’s some further commentary. And to find out more, the National Forum on Disability Issues, featuring the 2008 Presidential Candidates, will be held tomorrow, Sunday, July 26, 12:30 – 4:00 PM, ET. You can register for a live webcast via Disaboom:

The Pennsylvania Primary is today, with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama battling it out. I’ve noted the candidates’ autism plans in a previous post. Today’s Washington Post hones in on another way to consider the candidates, the alleged link between vaccines and autism. Back in February, Senator John McCain linked the rise in autism cases to thimerosal in vaccines. The Washing ton Post indicates that he’s not the only candidate who has “wandered into an exceptionally emotional medical debate in which they have no known scientific expertise”: According to David Kirby in today’s Huffington Post, Obama was quoted at a Pennsylvania rally yesterday saying that he is “suspicious” that the “skyrocketing” autism rate might c...

Her response leads to a pause at the other end of the line: What did she say……some strongly worded statement about a link between vaccines and autism?

I give a talk to a university PoliSci class on HIV in Africa and the business side that day as well and I'm wondering what the open discussion will be like! Should be interesting at least. What I've seen of the candidates and the clips on the debates has left me even more disturbed that the US government really has no idea how to confront this battle and that misconceptions are rife. I was very disappointed to hear Hillary Clinton say that HIV/AIDS in America is "...now a chronic disease..." but that it was a death sentence in Africa. Right. How, given Bill's work on AIDS in Africa, could she dream up that line?Huckabee remains evasive. Romney wanted to segregate anyone with HIV/AIDS in '92 and now ...

Whatever your political beliefs, if you have diabetes, health care should be at the top of your concerns when evaluating the campaign promises of any candidate.I've had a couple random discussions with people of every political stripe lately, and what I've found is that people who have jobs or have spouses who have jobs that provide family health insurance have no clue what the rest of us are up against when it comes to getting insurance. Even worse, many don't realize how the loss of the job might bring with it the permanent loss of the ability to get health coverage thanks to their having a chronic health condition. One person I know who identifies themselves as a rock ribbed Republican told me they are firmly opposed to any government intervention in health care and that, indeed, they w...

It was a real honor to me to be interviewed today by Tim Farley on POTUS 08 with XM Radio(the time for the interview, which was live, got moved around due to Trent Lott announcing his resignation and the interview was not archived).

I noted that Hillary Rodham Clinton’s autism plan bears a lot of similarities to the autism legislation (like the Combating Autism Act (CAA) and the Expanding the Promise for Individuals with Autism Act (EPIAA) ) that have been passed, as her plan focuses both on funding research into the causes of autism and on education, services, and supports. I referred to the difficulties that families have had in getting services (such as behavior therapy)...

From the November 25th Drudge Retort:
Clinton: Boost Autism Funding
Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday pledged to help autistic families [my emphasis] by boosting funding for research and education to $700 million a year. “I think it’s time we had a government and a president who recognized the seriousness of autism and addressed it head-on,” Clinton said.

Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo is getting a $400 haircut today. Notes the Associated Press:
Tancredo, a Colorado congressman, will pay $400 for a haircut on Friday — a play on former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards’ $400 cuts, which appeared on campaign spending reports in April.
Tancredo’s $400 fee will be donated to the Autism Society of America, said David Holden, owner of the Hair Biz Salon in Concord, N.H., where the candidate’s coif will get trimmed.
Holden said he got the idea for raising charitable funds after hearing about Edwards’ pricey haircuts, but didn’t immediately pursue it.
“That’s not of any interest to us,” Holden said in a telephone interview. “We had no intention of being malicious.”

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Opinion, Care, PersonalitiesThe Democratic presidential candidates all know this: whoever gets the nomination has an excellent shot at making it to the White House. First, though, is the long, hard, down and dirty campaign slog in which each candidate has to do the impossible - try and be all things to all people. One thing we can except is that they all devote a little time to addressing diabetes. Specifically, finding a cure for type 1 diabetes and strategies for containing the unprecedented spread of type 2 diabetes. The type 2 "epidemic" (as it is sometimes called) is all the more serious because of the strain it is adding to the US healthcare system, a system already failing to meet the needs of many Americans.During Monday night's CNN/YouTube debate, the c...

: "Among the legions of undecided Republicans is Barbara Skogman, 72, a retired legal assistant from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She isn't at all excited about any of the prospects. At one point, she favored McCain. At another, she was open to Giuliani. Now, she's leaning slightly toward Romney but says she's far from sold on him.'I'm looking for a strong, honest person. Do you know of any?' she joked. She had an easy time detailing why she was queasy about each of the most serious contenders. 'Isn't that sad?' Then she reached a conclusion: 'I just don't know.'"Ron Paul. The only thing that makes him "less credible" is that every other Republican and all the usual suspects within the MSM and the partisan noise machine are unanimous in not talking about him. That alone is enough of a reason.
Dear George Soros;Yesterday was a strange journey in linkhopping, which I'm going to try and reproduce from my history, as recording it got interrupted by Life. Checking The Daily Kos (while looking for Cindy Sheehan's Farewell) pointed me at strange events at Free Republic, and checking references to that led me to this Myspace Blog which quoted a statement on Patriotism by Ron Paul. I reproduce it full in a separate post, as it needs to be easily found and widely read. And THAT led me to write this scrolling monstrosity. More below the fold. You see, I'm getting to like Ron Paul as a candidate, and I think you might want to lay a few discreet bets on him. Even though I call myself "libertarian," I've never voted for Ron Paul, or indeed, very many Libertarians, inasmuch as most seem to be ...
