I have a friend who lives by this cardinal rule: She will never ever work with a friend.

Having experienced a situation not too long ago that became just that — messy — I can understand her logic and applaud her for sticking by that rule. I am now much more careful about sharing work opportunities with close friends… in order to protect myself.
Should the same rule apply to therapy?

I never thought so. I mean, my psychiatrist told me the other day that I am her third biggest source of referrals, after a local cardiologist and a gynecologist. I don’t hesitate to share the numbers of...

The big distributor was charged with failing to report suspicious sales of hydrocodone, which is a violation under the Controlled Substances Act, despite repeated warnings, according to the US Drug Enforcement Agency. The med was later distributed to pharmacies that filled illegitimate prescriptions from rogue Internet pharmacies.
Drugmakers and distributors are required to monitor and report suspicious orders of controlled substances. But the DEA says Cardinal allowed the diversion of millions of dosage units of hydrocodone, which is the generic name of a prescription painkiller that is classified under federal narcotics law as a Schedule III controlled substance.

In what looks like a tussle between Cardinal’s traditional supply chain services business and the young upstart CTS (clinical technologies and services) the two groups have decided to go their own way. With the retirement of Cardinal chair and CEO, Kerry Clark, the two vice chairs, George Barrett for supply chain services and David Schlotterbeck for CTS, are going separate ways. Barrett will take Clark’s position and Schlotterbeck will head the $4 billion global company to be headquartered in San Diego.

The big wholesaler has agreed to pay a fine of $105,000 to settle a charge by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy that it failed to report increases in drug orders from a rogue pharmacist, The Columbus Dispatch reports.
The fine relates to Cardinal Health’s shipments of controlled substances to Caringwell Pharmacy in Dublin, Ohio, from November 2006 until March 2007. The board said Cardinal provided addictive drugs, including prescription painkillers and anxiety meds, the paper writes.
The pharmacy board, which regulates drug sellers and distributors that do business in Ohio, closed Caringwell last year for illegally selling the meds over the Internet. The board investigated Cardinal for failing to report the pharmacy had significantly increased orders of controlled substances, as is ...

This seems to have caught Wall Street by surprsie. George Barrett was liked by investors and his departure is causing some analysts to wonder aloud whether the changover will be an issue. Barrett will be replaced by Bill Marth, who is currently ceo and president of Teva USA.
Barrett, meanwhile, is joining Cardinal Health, one of the big US drug wholsalers, as vice chairman and will also serve as ceo of Cardinal’s health-care supply chain services sector, according to a statement. Barrett, 53, will remain with Teva through January to assist in the transition and Marth, 53, will assume the additional role of CEO of Teva North America immediately, Teva said in its own statement.
Teva stock fell more than 4 percent earlier on the news, while Cardinal shares were up.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has suspended Cardinal Health’s license to distribute controlled substances from its Lakeland, Florida, distribution center, the second such suspension in about a week. In both cases - the other occurred in its Auburn, Washington, facility - the DEA says Cardinal failed to maintain effective controls in distributing to retail pharmacies, Reuters writes. The DEA cited the sale of hydrocodone to pharmacies that allegedly dispensed excessive amounts of the pain treatment, based on improper prescriptions from Internet pharmacy Web sites.

For many who have trouble falling or staying asleep, sleeping pills remain popular, but aren’t terribly effective - they help you fall asleep and stay asleep a very modest amount, and cost a great deal, as The New York Times reminds us. Rozerem, for instance, gets you to sleep 7 to 16 minutes faster than a placebo, or fake pill; increases total sleep time 11 to 19 minutes, and costs $3.50 a pill, according to an analysis last year. “People seem to be getting a lot of relief from sleeping pills, but does getting 25 minutes of sleep really give you all that relief?” Wallace Mendelson, the former director of a sleep disorders unit at the University of Chicago and industry consultant, tells the paper. “A bigger aspect of this is that they change a person’s perception of their sta...

Male Northern cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis, feeds his chick in Central Park, NYC. [song link]

I found this pair about twenty feet away from the nest site. I have been observing the progress of the nest and was delighted to find at least two of the three nestlings had fledged successfully. Should you find this inspirational I would hope you will demonstrate some restraint and not try it yourself at home with a significant other. I would strongly recommend you leave it to the professionals.

How OraSure Leveraged HIV-2 To Drive Share Price & VolumeIn 2003 in Illinois, two titans of the health care industry went to battle with the State Assembly. Compared to the raucous media battles over the intellectual property of ARV drug formulas, this was but a skirmish. But it was perhaps the first salvo in the coming battle for one company's determination to capture a market. OraSure leveraged the legal forces of Abbott, it's then main distributor, to lobby the State to make HIV-2 testing mandatory in Illinois. Chicago (actually Waukeegan, a small suburb north of Chicago) is home to both Abbott and Cardinal Health. It was Cardinal Health who would line up its legal forces in this opening skirmish. But testing for HIV-2 and HIV-1, that's good isn't it?For a small company with a product th...
