I was in London at Heathrow Airport when I learned that my flight back to Newark, New Jersey was canceled. More than that, they explained that Newark and all the surrounding airports in the New York City area had been closed because of Hurricane Irene, and that there was no possibility of getting a trans-Atlantic flight for a couple of days.

It takes some doing to breathe life into “Medical Information Matters” (blog carnival about medical information).
This month’s DSMA Blog Carnival

care of yourself?” As far as diabetes goes, I pretty much fly solo. I have close friends that help me in important ways, ways that I'd not like to be without. But here on board this plane, I am pilot, copilot, navigator, flight attendant, and luggage handler.I live by myself, and have done so for most of my adult life. Sure. But the fact ...

“And That’s When It All Came Together”
There are moments in life when everything clicks. Synchronicity. Poetry in motion. Bliss. Those moments on our journey when the map suddenly seems so clear and our destination so much closer. It can be a moment of insight or learning, a realignment of our priorities or perhaps just a stunning instant of clarity. Regardless, they are sacred moments in our human experience.
This month, in true EMT Spot fashion, I asked EMS bloggers from around the world to share with you their sacred moments of clarity when everything came together. I hope you enjoy the stories of these fellow travelers. All of us share the experience of stumbling down life’s road looking for a signpost to point the way. One of the most amazing things about br...

May is here and The Handover Blog Carnival is back. On Thursday, May 27th, I’ll be posting the latest incarnation of The Handover right here at The EMT Spot. I hope you’ll be a part of it.
After a brief hiatus and a change of ownership, The Handover is now under the watchful guidance of two great voices in the EMS blogshphere. Andrew Giebel from the blog From A Probies Eyes and Joel Nield, better known as Rescue Monkey are now the keepers of all things Handover.
So let’s get to it. In true EMT Spot fashion, this month’s Handover is dedicated to those brilliant moments of epiphany that make life grand. We’re going to look at the turning points, the eye openers and the new dawns.
This month’s theme is, ” … And that’s when it all came toge...

At RHRC, Robin Marty has a rundown of states working to ban abortion coverage in health exchanges related to health reform legislation. This includes Tennessee, where HB 2681 has passed the state House and would “prohibit[s] coverage for abortion services under any health care plan through an exchange required to be established in this state pursuant to federal health care reform legislation.”
More locally, Speak to Power talks about concerns that have been raised about whether this bill could limit contraception coverage as well. My understanding is that local liberal talk radio show Liberadio(!) will be discussing the issue in their Monday show as well.
Speaking of Tennessee, the Unnecesarean has some summary c-section rates by hospital for the state. I’m really curio...

Welcome to the February Carnival of Breastfeeding! This month contributors talk about overcoming breastfeeding challenges. Check out the round-up of links at the end of this post, but first, I make the argument that a babymoon is invaluable in helping mothers overcome breastfeeding challenges.

Wikipedia defines “babymoon” as “a period of time that parents spend bonding with a recently-born baby.” It goes on to explain that nearly 15 years ago the term babymoon was coined in the book The Year After Childbirth by childbirth educator and author Sheila Kitzinger. Kitzinger claimed:
The transition to fatherhood is easier when a man can take time off to be with his partner and baby in what I call a &#8216...

Welcome Carnival of Breastfeeding readers! This month the participants refer you to the “best of the best” on various breastfeeding topics. First, I feature several helpful resources on thrush, also known as an overgrowth of nipple yeast (usually the yeast Candida albicans) or candidiasis. At the end of this post are links to the other collections of resources from carnival participants.
When a woman is experiencing intense pain while breastfeeding, it is important that she consider the possibility of thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mother’s nipple and the baby’s mouth. If you only have time to read one resource on thrush, I recommend this comprehensive article from LLLI. For more information on particular topics, see the links below. This month the participants listed at the end of this post share their thoughts on “Taking Care of Yourself during the Holidays.” First I share the recommendations for fluid intake, how and at what point dehydration might affect breastfeeding, and the danger of over-hydrating.
After I moved to California I quickly realized how easy it was to become mildly dehydrated in the hot summer months if I didn’t pay attention to getting enough water and other fluids to drink. However, it’s also all too easy for breastfeeding mothers to get dehydrated in the cold months with the dry indoor air from furnace heating. Mothers of newborns in particular need to watch out for early signs of dehydration simply because new mothers can...

Ron's post reminded me of the importance of keeping this blogging carnival tradition alive. I'm glad that Blawg Review has survived the onslaught of the 140 character micro-blawg post (aka legal tweet).Blawg Review #242 is an eloquent Chanukah edition containing an insightful look at the whys of blogging (especially for those of us who have been doing this for years). Ron provides a glimpse at the current state of law blogging and what the future may hold. He leaves us with this wonderful thought."It's the Age of I...

Welcome to the November Carnival of Breastfeeding! This month mothers share their experiences of breastfeeding in the hospital. I rather prefer a home birth myself, so this time I’m leaving the job up to two mothers who wrote to me to share their experiences. At the end of these comments, check out the links to the other carnival participants!

Today I have the priviledge of hosting my first edition of Change of Shift, the blog carnival set up and run by Kim from Emergiblog, and designed to showcase nursing related blogs throughout the blogosphere.

Its been a busy couple of weeks with hosting our very own EMS/ER carnival ‘The Handover’, then Grand Rounds, so I thought why not round it off with Change of Shift!!
So, whats it doing here, I hear you all ask? Whats nursing got to do with Medic999 and Paramedicine and emergency care?
First, I will deal with my bit. I qualified as a registered nurse in 1995 and practiced for 5 years before turning my hand to pre-hospital care. I have seen both sides of the coin, in hospital and out of hospital healthcare and I truly feel that my nursing background has given me a valuable i...

No, not saving lives!
Blog carnivals…..Who’s idea was it to host three carnivals in three weeks then???
Im working on Change of Shift for Thursday at the moment, so my usual blogging is taking a back step tonight.
Talking about Change of Shift though, it’s looking decidedly short of nurse/nursing related stories from an EMS perspective.
A couple of my esteemed EMS colleagues have sent in submission to join the Change of Shift family, but wheres the rest of you then??
I will accept submissions right up until 8pm Wednesday night (GMT), so get those fingers typing and lets embrace this opportunity to share our experiences (good, bad or indifferent) with our nursing, medical and allied health professional colleagues. (Source: Medic999)

Comments are working again at OBOS – we had some technical difficulties this week, but have new posts up on Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s ghostwriting of papers on hormone replacement therapy (to gloss over the risks), with the Colbert Report’s take and continued featuring of a copy of OBOS as part of the women’s health g graphics. Also, Christine’s critique of a pregnant-looking-women-breakdancing campaign (you really just have to read it).

Welcome to the August Carnival of Breastfeeding in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week August 1-7, 2009! The theme for La Leche League’s celebration is “Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life.” Breastfeeding prepares mothers and babies to deal with life’s emergencies: a natural disaster, war, epidemic, or time of political and economic unrest. Breastfeeding provides vital protection for infants in an emergency. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports:
In 2004 alone, major emergencies affected nearly 40 million people, including 5.8 million children under the age of five, in 55 countries. The main causes of death among children during emergencies are the same as those occurring among otherwise disadvantaged populations, namely malnutrition, diarrhoeal diseases, acu...

The August Carnival of Breastfeeding coincides with World Breastfeeding Week the first week in August. Do you have thoughts on La Leche League’s World Breastfeeding Week theme: “Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life”? Perhaps breastfeeding helped you in the wake of Hurricane Katrina or another natural disaster. Maybe nursing helped you cope with a medical crisis? Did breastfeeding allow you and your child to undertake a trip you might not have otherwise? Please email me your post on “Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life” by July 27, 2009, for consideration for the blog carnival on August 3, 2009.

It’s true of nearly any profession. The keys to success are not technical knowledge or even years of experience. Lots of carnival participants have shared their own stories and advice about nursing in public (see links at the end of this post), but first I would like to discuss the issue of whether women should or should not cover themselves with a nursing cover while breastfeeding in public. At first it might seem like a non-issue.
Welcome to the May Carnival of Breastfeeding! This month participants share stories related to breastfeeding (see entries at the end of this post). My story represents the end of the story — how it turns out when a mother practices extended breastfeeding.
When I had my first daughter, I fumbled my way around until I found my parenting style. It happened naturally. I couldn’t stand to hear my baby cry; what mother can? So I breastfed her on cue, wore her in a sling, and co-slept with her in my bed. Those things worked for me, my husband, and my baby. They continued to work for us, and we identified ourselves more and more with an “attachment parenting” philosophy.

I’ve been organizing Gene Genie, a blog carnival about human genes and personalized medicine for 2 years, but it seems it gets harder and harder to organize such blog events. So I came up with the microcarnival idea which means we all can submit our favourite human genetics-related articles and posts and share those in real-time.
I created a Gene Genie Friendfeed room for this purpose. Please subscribe and let’s discover personalized genetics together. (Source: ScienceRoll)

For the May Carnival of Breastfeeding we ask you to share a story: your birth story as it relates to breastfeeding, your breastfeeding experience, overcoming a particular challenge, a cute or funny story about your nursling, or your weaning story.

I find it a little disheartening when some of you comment, stating that you haven’t commented in the past as you are ‘only’ a first aider or ‘just’ a St Johns Ambulance volunteer, or ‘only’ mountain rescue etc etc.

The 3rd Medlib’s Round, a blog carnival of medical-library related blogposts, is up at First Person Narrative. Anne Welsh did a great job pulling together an interesting collection of posts.
From Anne’s introduction

The latest issue of Grand Rounds is hosted this week by Leslie, at Getting Closer to Myself. This week's theme is "reflections on the way life used to be". Along these lines, I used to carry a stethoscope, but gave it up long ago for the rock star lifestyle of an academic radiologist. My Grand Rounds contribution, Just Say No to Stethoscopes, has more to say on why this is a Good Thing. (Source: Not Totally Rad)

It’s like a virus - the number of occupational therapy bloggers is growing, and the online community of occupational therapists is becoming more connected. Join in if you want to be challenged and enthused!
I’m passionate about people knowing why they make the decisions they do in therapy, so this month I set the topic of ‘clinical reasoning’ to find out what other occupational therapists do when they are working their way through a therapeutic decision.
Clinical reasoning is ‘the ability to select and use information effectively in solving problems…a teachable cognitive skill independent of specific clinical knowledge.’ (Elstein, 1995). Another way of looking at it is the ‘process of making sense of a clinical encounter.’ Clinical reason...

I haven’t read every included post yet, but am looking forward to catching up on these this weekend. I’m also honored that my post on the bill that would force drug tests for pregnant women was included.
Renee notes in the comments: “The next carnival will be on the 15th if I get enough submissions. So far I have not had any volunteers to host a carnival and therefore it will be posted here. Anyone is free at any time to volunteer to host if they so desire.”
Make sure to send your submissions and support the carnival by spreading the word.

Image via CrunchBaseI can't think of anything to add to this intro of this first edition of Medlib's Round hosted and initiated by Laikas:

"The MedLib’s Round is about medical librarian stuff. This field is much broader than searching PubMed or interlibrary loaning; it is related to all stages in the publication and medical information cycles (searching, citing, managing, writing, publishing, social networking).
This carnival covers many facets of that cycle."

The Carnival itself is a caleidoscope of topics:

Welcome to the January Carnival of Breastfeeding! This month’s carnival entries (see links at the end of this post) focus on breastfeeding goals. My little Nicole just turned six months old on January 17, so my discussion is on the goal of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.

As usual, this edition at Clinical Cases and Images is unique (the carnival is a Google Docs Presentation and the submissions are posted on Twitter as well).

Bloggy Giveaways Carnival
Katie’s name was drawn as the winner of the Bloggy Giveaways Carnival for the book, Glass Full of Tears by June Lund Shiplett. Congratulations, Katie!
“Sadly, I have watched a few of my grandparents struggle with dementia,” said Katie in her comment. “It’s very scary.”
Yes, it can be scary. However, if we look with love, we often can bring joy to those family members who suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
Thank you, everyone, for visiting Alzheimer’s Notes and leaving your comments for the giveaway. I appreciate your sharing your thoughts and stories with us.
If there is anything you’d like to see here at Alzheimer’s Notes that will encourage you in your caregiver or patient situations, do let ...

We are back from our 10-year anniversary cruise, and we are so in love! Really, it was nice spending some quality time together and having no other responsibilities. We get along really well - especially when there are no chores to fight about.
The cruise was okay. I was nauseous from the boat rocking - even with the patch on. The seas were not calm at all, and there was some bad weather every now and then. We had too many days at sea, and we are not really casino players or lay-in-the sun kind of people. We liked the shows at night, and I really liked the dinners. Before the cruise, I had contacted Carnival Cruise Lines asking if they could support my diet. They sent me some forms to fill out explaining my medical condition and my requirements. I wrote that I could not tolerate pepper or ...

Medicine 2.0 Microcarnival Edition

The 34th edition of Medicine 2.0 blog carnival is a bit unique because it will be a microcarnival edition for the first time in its history. You can check all the posts and news about the world of medicine 2.0 and health 2.0 out in the Friendfeed room of the carnival.
This is something like an experiment. I used to keep in touch with friends and collegues via e-mail, now I use Twitter. I used to write blog carnival editions as blogposts, now I use Friendfeed if it’s better and easier to update. You will decide…
Why to use Friendfeed as a blog carnival format?

You can comment on each of the submissions.
You can submit your best articles automatically.
It is being updated all the time.

Medicine 2.0 is a blog carnival about the impact of web 2.0 on medicine and healthcare.

This article has a very personal feel as I talk about the state of todays nutrition and how proper eating is the key to lasting health and not diets.”

FitBuff from FitBuff.com’s Total Mind and Body Fitness Blog asks ‘Does Fruit Make You Fat?’, saying, ‘I decided to put the question to the test for myself with a detailed self-experiment. Here’s what I found…’

And that’s that. Hope you enjoyed this edition of the Healthbolt Carnival.
You can submit your health blog article to the next edition of Healthbolt Carnival using the carnival submission form.
And always, you can find past posts and future hosts on the blog carnival index page.

Thanks to Alvaro Fernandez at SharpBrains, now we, organizers of biomedical carnivals, launched the carnival of carnivals, MetaCarnival. Here is the first edition. Alvaro collected the best submissions of several carnivals which means MetaCarnival is a collection of selected, quality articles about medicine, biology or medical informatics. I will host the 3rd edition on the 29th of December.
A blog carnival can be a great way to make a compilation of articles, news and posts dedicated to a specific field of interest.
Anyway, I’ve been running Gene Genie, the carnival of human genetics for almost 2 years now. If you would like to host an edition, let me know.
Medicine 2.0 carnival focuses on the impact of web 2.0 on medicine and healthcare.

The 39th edition is up at Genetics & Health. A great compilation of articles and blogposts about human genetics and personalized medicine. Thank you, Grace Ibay, for hosting Gene Genie.
Gene Genie is the blog carnival of genes and gene-related diseases. Our plan is to cover the whole genome before 2082 (it means 14-15 genes every two weeks). We accept articles on the news of genomics and clinical genetics. The news and articles of personalized genetics are also included. Check out Gene Genie for more about this unique field of medicine.

Many thanks to Ricardo Vidal for the logo!
Don’t forget to submit your articles via the official page.
Let me know if you would like to host an edition.
