I am speaking today at the American Health Lawyers Association annual meeting on the uses of social media by attorneys. I am sharing two versions of my slides from this session: one that is text-rich and full of useful links, and one that is much nicer to look at and more engaging for a live audience. Enjoy one or both, and let me know what you think in the comments. If you are off-site, please tweet a shout-out to me @healthblawg tagged #AHLABoston a little after 3 p.m. ET, so we can show the folks in Boston the reach of Twitter, and let us know where you're tweeting from.

It takes some doing to breathe life into “Medical Information Matters” (blog carnival about medical information). A month ago I wrote a 2nd call for submissions post for this blog carnival. Unfortunately the next host, Martin Fenner, didn’t have time to finish a blog post and has come up with a new (interesting) variation on the theme [...] (Source: Laika's MedLibLog)

"Ed.," the anonymous editor of Blawg Review, has posted his 2010 Blawg Review roundup, featuring each of last year's hosts of the long-running law blog carnival, as well as a recent post from each host's blawg. He's soliciting nominations, votes, rants, diatribes and recommendations as the battle for Blawg Review of the Year 2010 begins. I humbly submit for your consideration Blawg Review #268, the fifth edition hosted here on HealthBlawg, themed in honor of Flag Day (which just might be related to battles, in a way).
I took the occasion of hosting the Flag Day Blawg Review to quote our predecessor at the bar, John Adams, who once said: "In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress."

Kim has worked tirelessly to promote the many nurse bloggers who pour out their hearts and souls to describe the joys, frustrations, challenges and rewards of the incredibly varied profession of nursing. She remains ahead of the virtual curve, and inspires us all to continue writing and sharing our experiences with the world. (Source: Digital Doorway)

This week, health reform looms large in the minds of blog carnival hosts. Evan Falchuk's health reform edition of Grand Rounds is up at his See First blog. Rich Elmore hosts the current Health Wonk Review at his Healthcare Technology News (check out the flying pigs photos and more; cf. the HealthBlawger's "First Hundred Days" edition of Blawg Review for another reference to flying pigs).

The next edition of Health Wonk Review will be hosted right here on April 15th. The themes we will be exploring in that biweekly exegesis of health wonkery include the following: Metaphors
Lying
Song (esp. the blues)
Art (esp. painting, drawing)
Inventors and their contraptions
Fast food
Liberation
Cosmetic surgery/medical spas
Impressionist 19th century novels

Here's one we've been waiting for. It's that time again, time for another meeting of The Skeptics' Circle. This time around, the host is everyone's favorite purveyor of rhyming skepticism, Digital Cuttlefish, hosting the 133rd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle.

Go, read, enjoy.

Next up to host on April 8 will be Divisible by Pi. The Digital Cuttlefish is a tough act to follow, but I bet Richard can do it. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

You know, I am hearing a lot about March Madness from my American friends on twitter and facebook. I am not knowing what that really means, but I am thinking it must have something to do with their healthcare reform bill which I am growing sick of hearing about. So I was thinking I will use this March Madness thing as a theme for this edition of SurgeXperiences. Since I am already telling you that I am not knowing anything about what this March Madness is about, I am going to let you guess how I am using it as my theme. *

Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est (And thus knowledge itself is power)
-- Sir Francis Bacon.

Welcome to the 21st edition of Scientia Pro Publica, the blog carnival devoted to nurturing and encouraging an online community of blog writers who communicate with the public about science, environment and medicine. Since it was the 201st anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, I think it is important to mention that writing about science for the public has historical precedent: Darwin and other scientists of yore wrote extensively about their ideas for the public. In this blog carnival, you'...

I've been a bad, bad organizer.

Poor Martin went through all that work to put together another bang up Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle (the 130th, to be precise), and I didn't publicize it. Well, hopefully better late than never. Go. Read. Learn.

Then don't forget that less than two weeks hence, on February 25, the 131st Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle will be held at Providentia. Guidelines for submission can be found here. So start getting your skeptical blogging going to produce yet another great edition of the Skeptics' Circle, which, believe it or not, has been running five years now. Finally, if you want to host, check out the schedule and drop me a line at orac@scienceblogs.com. Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

Faster than a blink of an eye (well, not really, but it sure seems that way sometimes) another fortnight has flown by, meaning that it's time yet again for another meeting of that venerable blog carnival of critical thinking, the Skeptics' Circle. This time around, we have our first ever veterinarian hosting. I could make jokes about the Skeptics' Circle going to the dogs, but I'll exercise some rare self-restraint and refrain from doing so. (Oh, wait...)

In any case, this time around, the 129th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is being held over at SkeptVet.

Head on over and check it out.

Then join us in two weeks for the next installment in this ever-growing exercise in blogging about skepticism, critical thinking, and science, when it will be held at The Lay Scientist. If you're a blo...

It's amazing how fast two weeks can slide by, but the 129th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching and will be landing Thursday, January 28 at The SkeptVet Blog. Blog-specific instructions for submitting your best skeptical blogging can be found here, while general guidelines can be found here.

This is the first time we've had a skeptical veterinarian host; so let's try to get him some great material to help him do a bang-up job.
Check out the latest Health Wonk Review penned by Dr. Jaan Sidorov over at the Disease Management Care blog. I commend Dr. Sidorov for his selection of a new personal photo on his blog — very handsome, and certainly a better presentation than this earlier photo from his youth.

...for the 128th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, being held over at Ionian Enchantment.

It's another great one!

And, as usual, it's never too early to think about submitting your work to the next edition of the Skeptics' Circle, to be held on January 28 at SkeptVet. Hmmm. I wonder if he'll take on some animal woo. In any case, here are the guidelines and the schedule. We're good through February, but could use some more hosts to keep this tradition going. Given that it would be difficult for 2010 to be worse than 2009, it's a pretty sure bet that it probably will be better, but I never underestimate the power of the universe to mess things up worse than they already are messed up. In other words, whenever I start thinking that things can't get any worse, I remind myself that they most definitely can. On the other hand, as far as the ol' blog goes, 2009 was a fantastic year. After around two years of flat traffic, traffic in 2009 is up by around 50% on average, with November being the best month ever in the history of the blog.
The 125th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle has been posted at Effort Sisyphus. This time around, you have a choice, either the predigested and linear or the more difficult but potentially more satisfying trip down the rabbit hole, never knowing what might pop up. Choose wisely.

Next up to host the Skeptics' Circle two weeks hence is Weird Things. Be sure to join us if you're a regular reader (or even if you're not), and if you're a blogger be sure to submit your best skepticism and critical thinking to the next host!
It's time for another installment of that venerable (gasp!) blog carnival of skepticism, science, and critical thinking, The Skeptics' Circle. This time, it's the 124th Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, and it's finally landed, late but still brimming with skeptical goodness at Beyond the Short Coat.

Next up, two weeks hence, on December 3, will be TechSkeptic at Effort Sisyphus. His instructions for submitting your work are here. General instructions for what we look for in a Skeptics' Circle entry are here. So, by the way, is the schedule. If you're interested in hosting one of these puppies yourself (and what skeptical blogger wouldn't like to try his or her hand at this at some point?), check out these instructions for hosting and drop me a line. From Blogs:
Dr. Bruce Campbell, a Professor of ENT Surgery, known informally among medical bloggers as Headmirror, doesn’t think it’s a good idea to nap in the operating room and talks about the difficulty that most of us have leaving work behind even when we take a break. Bruce, is the “Blogging Surgeon” on WUWM - Milwaukee Public Radio! Scroll to the bottom of this link and listen. It’s well worth your time.
Our intrepid surgeon from the South African low veld, Bongi, has a run in with the good old boy setup that exists in all academic hospitals and waxes eloquent on healthcare professionals’ twisted sense of humour (that’s with a u).

It's almost here, and it's almost time!

The 123rd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle is fast approaching. This time around it will be here on Thursday, November 5. That means skeptical bloggers out there don't have much time to get their best recent work to Colin at Blue Genes for inclusion.

Guidelines for what we're looking for when it comes to submissions to the Skeptics' Circle can be found here. Instructions for submitting to this week's Skeptics' Circle are here.

Don't let Colin down! Bury him in submissions! (Not literally, of course, which would be hard. How do you bury someone in electronic text?) Read the comments on this post... (Source: Respectful Insolence)

I really have to apologize to the Young Australian Skeptics. I screwed up. I didn't do my duty as organizer of The Skeptics' Circle. The Aussies provided a bang-up edition of the 122nd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle, and I didn't even promote it.

So I'm promoting it now. Go. Read. Enjoy.

Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est (And thus knowledge itself is power)
-- Sir Francis Bacon.

As you know, the first full week of October is Nobel Prize week, the week when new discoveries and innovations that benefit humanity are celebrated on the worldwide stage.
I've been a bad, bad boy. In particular, I've been a bad, bad host in that I totally forgot to hawk the last Skeptics' Circle back on August 27, nearly a week ago.

So, please, go make up for my horrific error and visit The 118 Skeptics' Circle: Looking Closely Edition (if that link doesn't work, try http://evolvingmind.info/blog/2009/08/the-118-skeptics%E2%80%99-circle-looking-closely-edition). Now. Peruse the skeptical bloggy goodness that is there.

Hmmm. I wonder if too many toxins have built up in my bloodstream and are causing incipient Alzheimer's disease. Maybe I need some chelation and a colon cleanse or two.

In any event, don't let me forget that next week Cubik's Rube will be hosting on Thursday, September 10. Instructions for submitting your work are here, and guidelines are h...

God, I'm so old. Or my blog is. Or something.

In any case, next up on August 27 is The Evolving Mind. Be sure to get your skeptical brains working to produce the fodder for yet another in the venerable line of skeptical explorations that the Circle has become.
