Olympic winner and motivational speaker, Jim Stovall once said “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is looking.” In September 2009, I wrote about a blog about Carolyn Savage, a 40 year old woman with a poor obstetrical history. Savage married her college sweetheart and had an uncomplicated first pregnancy. However, her second child was born prematurely. She had 4 subsequent miscarriages and ten years later she became pregnant through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Because the Savages wanted a large family, they tried IVF again. Unfortunately, Savage was impregnated with the wrong embryo. To their credit, everyone rose to the highest level of integrity. The infertility clinic informed the Savage family as soon as the mistake was discovered and then gave them the option o...

This is Bell Let’s Talk Day. Multiple Olympic medallist Clara Hughes, lead spokesperson for the campaign, was on CTV News in Toronto today. From among the calls she fielded came this articulate gem, “To kill the pain too often means to kill oneself.” However, and this was Clara’s message, help and hope are available to [...] (Source: My journey with AIDS)

It’s not what you think. If indeed you do think about it before being diagnosed. My initial breast cancer diagnosis came in February 2007 and I was re-diagnosed with secondaries in October 2009. Along with all the feelings of shock, isolation and fear comes something unexpected and most welcome. Love. And it comes from all directions.
I was in my final semester of university as a mature student when I started my first lot of chemotherapy; I had a great set of friends, people I had met through university, through the theatre group I worked with and through being a girl and having lovely girlfriends. Having done a bit of travelling, I was also lucky enough to have friends dotted around the globe; in my hometown and the various cities I’d lived since leaving there 16 years before.

The Johnson & Johnson recall scandal is threatening to envelope the healthcare giant in ways that, just a few months ago, no one could imagine. The latest twist involves a series of emails that appear to lend further credence to what a Congressional committee is calling a ‘phantom recall,’ which was allegedly undertaken to obscure serious problems with widely used over-the-counter pediatric medications. The episode is part of a long-running chain of events may prompt the FDA to consider criminal charges.
At issue are quality-control failures that forced J&J to recently recall tens of millions of bottles of such venerable brands as Tylenol and Motrin, among others, which had been found to contain too much active ingredient or metallic specks. But instead of issuing a r...

US Rep Carolyn Maloney is warning of the possible health dangers for the BP oil spill workers if health concerns are dismissed and protective gear is not provided. Maloney represents parts of Manhattan and Queens and is an advocate for the more than 30,000 workers at the Twin Towers site who have suffered serious respiratory and health issues as a result of exposures while working the cleanup.
(Editor’s Note: we are pleased to bring you this article thanks to our collaboration with Greater Good Magazine).
The Evolution of Empathy
Empathy’s not a uniquely human trait, explains primatologist Frans de Waal. Apes and other animals feel it as well, suggesting that empathy is truly an essential part of who we are.
Once upon a time, the United States had a president known for a peculiar facial display. In an act of controlled emotion, he would bite his lower lip and tell his audience, “I feel your pain.” Whether the display was sincere is not the issue here; how we are affected by another’s predicament is. Empathy is second nature to us, so much so that anyone devoid of it strikes us as dangerous or mentally ill.
At the movies, we can’t help but get insi...

A media drumbeat is steadily building to keep those on the government’s terrorist watch list from buying firearms. A month ago, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) introduced a bill to bar them from purchasing a gun even if they had no legally disqualifying criminal conviction. Now Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has introduced his own legislation to achieve the same goal.
This is arbitrary government at its best. The “no-fly” list used to prevent suspected terrorists from boarding aircraft has tagged Nelson Mandela, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA), Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), Rep. Don Young (R-AK), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), a retired general, a Marine reservist returning from Iraq, the President of Bolivia and dead 9/11 hijackers, a former federal prosecutor, and over twenty men named John...

Whether or not you live in the United States, please take a moment to join the Facebook group I created in support of the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009.
Facebook group
This is the fifth time this bill has been up for consideration in Congress and it needs a strong show of support for passage in this 111th Congress! Please help spread the word through Facebook, Twitter, and any breastfeeding groups to which you belong! If you live in the United States, please consider writing to your representatives to ask them to support the bill in the House committees. We need a groundswell of support to get this legislation passed!

After the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009 was introduced on June 11, 2009, it was referred to three different committees. Now is the time to take action to support HR2819 by writing to your state representatives if they are on any of these committees (click the links to check the membership for your state representatives) and are not already co-sponsors of the bill (co-sponsors are listed in the sample letter below):
House Ways and Means
House Energy and Commerce
House Education and Labor

Nursing mothers have Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) to thank for her tireless attempts to see a Breastfeeding Promotion Act passed in Congress. Last Thursday Representative Maloney and Senator Jeff Merkley announced the introduction of the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009 (H.R. 2819).
Representative Maloney announcing the Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009
Incredibly, this is the fifth time the Act has been up for consideration. Representative Maloney spoke to a crowd of nursing mothers on Capitol Hill:
This bill is needed now more than ever, as moms head back to work earlier than ever during this recession. I hope that with Senator Merkley’s good efforts, we can get this bill to the President.

Now that the legislative language of the HITECH Act -- the $20 billion health IT allocation within the economic stimulus package -- has been set, it's time to identify a National Coordinator (NC) for Health IT who can capably lead that office. As many now realize, the language of the Bill can be ambiguous, requiring wise regulatory interpretation and execution to ensure that the money is spent well and that desired outcomes are achieved.
That’s the claim made in a lawsuit filed by Carolyn Gleason, a former rep who visited hospitals and other big medical institutions in northern Florida to sell Mycamine, an anti-fungal med that Roche co-promotes with Astellas Pharma. The trouble began, according to the lawsuit, when a regional manager wanted to boost declining sales by relying, in part, on off-label promotions.
In her lawsuit, Gleason charges she was sexually harassed and, eventually, fired because she refused to follow orders to market the drug for “all purposes,” such as telling docs the drug could be used in lower-cost, 100mg doses to treat candidemia. The FDA, though, had not approved Mycamine for that use or dosage. As an example, she cites a June 2007 club luncheon at which a presentation was being m...

Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is hosting a special briefing next Wednesday (24 September 2008) for Members of Congress and their Staff to update them on recent developments in the vaccine-autism debate. I took their advice (kind of) and sent my Senators and Congressman a quick note about the meeting:

On Wednesday 24 September, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is hosting a special briefing for Members of Congress and their Staff to update them on recent developments in the vaccine-autism debate. As the parent of an autistic son, now 17, I’m asking that you not spend the valuable time of you or your staff at this meeting.

Filed under: Breast Cancer, Events, Thought for the DayWe cannot be silent is one slogan printed on specialty clothing offered by a company called Privacy. Other slogans include United We Cure and Mission. Purpose. Cure. The slogans say a lot -- but the accomplishments of Carolyn Jones, Founder and President/CEO of Privacy, say a whole lot more.Think about this:Jones lost her mother to breast cancer on November 16, 2000 during a time when too many questions about the disease were left unanswered and not enough options were available for women fighting for their lives.Times have changed, in part due to outspoken pioneers like Jones, who are spreading the word and funding the cause.Part of the Privacy corporate goal is to support medical research and to educate women about early detection an...
