From “The Accidental Cartoonists” by Robert Trussell, to be published Sunday, August 7, 2011 in The Kansas City Star magazine:

His lofty journalism ambitions were always scuttled by a phalanx of editors with an obtuse chain of command. Maybe I was the inspiration.
Regardless, many of them were photocopied and distributed in notebooks labeled “Office Art,” which ran through its print run of 20 almost immediately. That came as no surprise, consi...

It seems like a no-brainer that lighting something on fire and inhaling the smoke wouldn’t be good for you. But not so long ago, smoking was socially acceptable in schools, doctors’ offices, airplanes, and the town of Bedrock – as seen in this 1960s Winston cigarettes commercial. Yabba. Dabba. Doobie.

At the end of a long hard week, there’s something lovely about thinking ‘One more job to do and it’s Gin & Tonic time!’. Which brings me rather rapidly to today’s tips from Supertherapist. I couldn’t possibly admit to being in any need of her advice, but you may know one or two people who could benefit from remembering the wisdom brought to you from experience.
Remember, when speaking to certain doctors, do NOT say “Aw, did I step on your poor little bitty ego?”
When conversing with managers, NEVER say “I’m trying to imagine you with a personality.”
In supervision, be cautious about saying “I just want revenge. Is that so wrong?”

As some of you noted, last Friday I didn’t post a Friday Funnies – and did I get my hand slapped. Sorry.
This week, never fear (or should I reword that?) here are the Friday Funnies.

OK, last one…

(do you think that works on teenagers or during a so-called ’sleepover’?!)
Fabulous places on the web:
Stress and Humour – Patricia Cameron-Brown and Shayne Yates show us that Ozzies haven’t lost their sense of humour. This couple have been around in healthcare for years – at least since 1995! Worth a wander through their site, and consider either attending a workshop, or getting a DVD of their material – laughter really is good for your health.
Laughter yoga? Well you might if I ever did any yoga – but this is different. The ...

The strength of our recovery is in direct proportion to our ability to laugh at ourselves.
Laughter heals, particularly the laughter that comes when we understand the lifesaving difference between “how it was” before recovery and “how it is” living in sobriety.
These hearty cartoons and humorous anecdotes reflect with powerful clarity how our drinking or drug-using days contrast with our lives today.
Laughter helps us celebrate our recovery and it reminds us how grateful we are for sobriety and for the priceless camaraderie of people in Twelve Step Fellowships.

When was the last time you got an itchy rear quarter from sitting on the sharp edges of half grass, half weeds; blown on a dandelion just to watch the feathered pieces fly?
And you thought I’d abandoned y’all… Never fear, I can’t miss my weekend preparation, so here we go again!

I’m no fan of ergonomics for ‘preventing pain’, despite my couple of postgraduate papers in it! So when I found these couple of cartoons, I’m sorry I couldn’t stop myself…

I’ve been needling acupuncturists for a while now – perhaps after this I should stop?

OK, OK, I’m retreating NOW!
Have a great weekend! (Source: HealthSkills Weblog)

We’re cartoonists now! Chaos Theory is published on AOL’s new Politics Daily. My husband Robert does the drawing, and we both do the writing. Politics Daily wasn’t planning on featuring cartoons, so it will take a while for software issues to get resolved. But they’re up! This first post has two cartoons: Party of New Ideas and Sotomayor Bar Talk.

Humor is Good Medicine for Caregivers - The Caregivers Beacon Has Added "Andertoons" Cartoons

The Caregivers Beacon has added humor to the website/blog in the form of several "cartoons of the day" from the well known "Andertoons" found in many of the most popular magazines. Caregivers can find some "comic relief" by visiting Andertoons.com. There you can browse cartoons according to topics - kids, healthcare, family, pets and so on. There is also a widget so you can download a "cartoon of the day" to put on your own blog or website.Humor is one of the healthiest ways to reduce tension and relax. Thus, the "doc" at the Caregivers Beacon blog is prescribing "one or more Andertoons per day for relaxation." Enjoy.
Humor’s one of those funny things, if you’ll pardon the pun. Everyone’s sense of humor is different. So having warned you ahead of time, I find some of Stuart Barlow’s cartoons on mental health and psychology topics funny, but you may not. His words say it best:

It’s a project of mine using humor to help heal.
My goal is to have the cartoons and jokes from the “consumer point of view.” If you have any ideas for a cartoon or a joke or funny story that fits thats criteria let me know. I will post the jokes and stories and try to draw the cartoon idea.

I believe there is a great deal of value in humor and learning to laugh at oneself and one’s life, even in the darkest moments. Laughter is one of the things that makes us uniquely humor and ...

Not everyone agrees about the notion of the “autism spectrum, in which “autism” is a term that refers to persons with diagnoses ranging from Asperger Syndrom to what some call “severe” autism.” Perhaps it is not a perfect metaphor, but I think it has its uses in understanding autism—in thinking about how, while Charlie’s speech is much less than that of a child his age with Asperger, they nonetheless share a number of traits, such as patterns of thinking, sensory processing difficulties, and a tendency towards obsessive thiniing. “The Colors of Autism” is the name of a gallery talk to be given by Dr. Dan Ingram, PsyD, NCSP, psychologist and clinical instructor, at the Art Institute of York in Pennsylvania, on November 14 (next Wed...

With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child is a new manga by Keiko Tobe about a mother, Sachiko, and her efforts to take care of her autistic son, Hikaru. MangaBlog notes that, while With the Light attempts to convey a definite educational message, it is also entertaining. The story seems to be told mostly from the perspective of Sachiko as the mother of an autistic child, while less attention is given to Hikaru’s own perspective. In particular, MangaBlog points out that Tobe uses the manga format to good effect:
Interestingly, the two characters drawn in classic big-eyed manga style are Sachiko and Hikaru, but the effects are very different: Sachiko is usually trembling with emotion, while Hikaru is usually looking off to the side or staring into space. Most of the adults are drawn ...

Thought for the Day: Cancer humor

Filed under: Chemotherapy, All Cancers, Stress Reduction, Cancer Survivors, Thought for the DayCancer is not funny, but I do like the comics about cancer that I have found on the Internet. Mostly they are written and illustrated by cancer patients themselves.
We all need to laugh -- even sometimes at the most un-laughable things. This cartoon reminds of the time when I myself was wearing a very long sexy wig. I also had fake eyelashes and had drawn on my eyebrows.
Going to work one day I got a whistle from a gentleman on the street. I had to laugh to myself -- if he really knew what I looked like underneath all of this I wouldn't be getting any looks!
You can find more cancer cartoons here.

Go here to see the cartoons (6 in all) and very special thanks to Leila for telling me about them and for translating the dialogue! The cartoons are aimed at children and the characters are all children.
The cartoonist, Mauricio de Souza, is very well-known in Brazil. As Leila emailed me: “Monica is a strong, smart, bossy girl, and Cebolinha (who has a speech impediment — [he] trades r for l) is always teasing her because of her big teeth, calls her “chubby” and hides her stuffed bunny.” Monica stands up for André and (as you can see) prevails.

Filme 1
MONICA - Hi, I want you to know André, my new friend. He’s autistic. Autistics don’t make eye contact.(giving the bunny to him): Here you go.
CEBOLINHA - Let me see. Oh.
MONICA - They don’t...

This is OLD news. But I didn't know. And with the plethora of tropical nasties that we've been talking about lately, somehow this came up. Fascinating! And richly deserved I suppose. An extract from the letter send to Larson:Obviously it is common practice for entomologists to name new species of insects after colleagues, relatives, friends, enemies and people in the public eye... With your permission, I would like to name a new species of insect after you. There is a catch, however. I do not work on cute insects. I am a specialist on the order Mallophaga, the "chewing lice"... Your species, Strigiphilus garylarsoni belongs to a genus only found on owls... - Dale H.
