By Ilya ShapiroAs I wrote almost exactly a year ago, my friend Mark Sigmon filed a case on behalf of the ACLU seeking to prohibit a town in North Carolina from enforcing its sign ordinance against a man who painted “Screwed by the Town of Cary” on the side of his house. Well, yesterday, the federal district court granted the plaintiff David Bowden summary judgment and entered a permanent injunction against the town.
The court concluded that the sign ordinance was content-based under the First Amendment because it required more than a perfunctory inquiry into the content of signs in order to determine whether the ordinance would apply. For example, the ordinance required the town to determine whether something was a “work of art,” a “holiday message,&...

In response to recent efforts to restrict the dissemination of academic research generated by contracts, the American Association of University Professors is developing new guidelines for colleges and faculty who receive corporate financing for research. The move comes after recent attempts by BP and federal agencies using Natural Resource Damage Assessment program.
The disclosure was made in the recent issue of AAUP’s Academe magazine, which carries several articles, including one about conflicts of interest standards at medical journals (read here), another that reviews pharmaceutical industry influence on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (see this) and an essay detailing similar concerns in Canada, where the Canadian Association of University Profes...

David Bowden was upset about the way he had been treated by the town of Cary, NC, regarding damage to his property during a road-widening project. This past July, Bowden hired someone to paint “Screwed By The Town of Cary” on the front of his house. A few weeks ago, the town gave Bowden seven days to remove the sign or face daily fines — $100 for the first day, $250 for the second, $500 for each subsequent day – for violating a local sign ordinance.
Trader Joe’s is sort of new to North Carolina, so it might not be a name you’re familiar with. TJ is a unique grocery store chain.
Trader Joe's Cary Location
Each store stocks a variety of organic produce and other items, including meats and dairy. If you’re looking for high quality without the high prices, you can find it at Trader Joe’s. After hearing my California friends brag about what a great store this was, I was glad to finally get to experience it myself. I visited the Cary Trader Joe’s near Cary Parkway.

I was at the Cary Amphitheatre for the first time last week to see Duran Duran. It was a great show, and I loved the venue. I plan on going back in the future.
Duran Duran was fabulous! You know how some bands don’t sound like themselves at a live performance? I think some musicians have so much in the way of studio enhancements that they can’t match it when they play in front of a live audience. Duran Duran isn’t like that. They sounded great. They’ve been playing some of their stuff for nearly 30 years, so they’ve had a lot of practice.
They played a good mix of old and new songs. Is there anyone else who thinks Last Chance On the Stairway and Ordinary World are their best songs ever?
We all had a wonderful time, and I’m looking forward to doing it aga...

Primary season is in full swing with each candidate promising a better deal than the others. Healthcare reform is one of the top three or four concerns, depending upon your socioeconomic group and political affiliation. The last time this concern was front and center was in the 1992 Presidential election, extending into President Clinton’s first years in office. I was still practicing medicine and did my best to care for my friends. An artist friend and his wife called me around that time to tell me they were expecting their first child and had no health insurance. They were also struggling with paying their rent and buying food.Over the years I had arranged medical care for several people who needed more care than I could provide, but this was the first...

One’s outward physical appearance has the first impact. Whilst it’s important to be well presented, that is to say clean and tidy, otherwise, it is not important at all. [translation = not one jot!] Most of us are aware of the pressures upon young women about their appearance. Since I have two girls, I have always been at great pains to concentrate upon their inner characters. Since my eldest daughter is on the cusp of her 26th birthday, I have had a great deal of practice. [translation = self esteem for all children is essential] As a result of all this practice, I am indeed a past master about sweeping aside the frippery and trappings of fashion. [translation = second to none] Do not come to me in your pink frilly skirt with your face made up and your hair just curled. [translation ...

This report won’t sit well with the health care industry, particularly the drug, device and supply sector, which has won higher and higher profits by getting paid increasing dollars for new offerings that may or may not be better for patients. Go to OpenSecrets.org, and pull the data on lobbying expenditures by the health care sector. You’ll see that this same group represents half of all health care lobbying dollars. (More on that in a post next week.)But with this very focused, provocative and accurate report, Mr. Orszag has won the attention of key legislators as well as, hopefully, non-health care business interests, where the real power lies. During a time when sound bites about universal coverage pass for meaningful discussion on reform, his analysis provided real c...
