– Having published a bog about bulldogs and cats, seems quite apt that I was also writing recently about kitty litter the main component of which is the absorbant mineral sepiolite. Sepiolite has been known since Roman times when it was used to filter and purify wine, today it's commonly found in cat litter trays. It absorbs huge amounts of liquid as it is so porous although a detailed understanding was missing. Now, an X-ray study could help explain why and perhaps lead to more technological applications, such as the development of food binders and drug-delivery agents.

Cat lovers everywhere might baulk at this veterinarian’s approach to putting cats in “standby” mode, but it’s not painful and simply hooks into the reflex that makes kittens go entirely limp when they are grabbed by the she cat by the scruff of their neck. It’s probably not advisable to do this to your own cat. It’s really for the cat’s safety and teh safety of the vet while it undergoes treatment.
There is some debate as to whether that is indeed a reflex or whether it’s a conditioned response. I suspect it’s far too important that a kitten submits to its mother’s lifting it up in this way for it to be conditioned, it’s an innate reflex, I think. Feel free to argue that point, but in the meantime watch the kitteh being put ...

The Combat Application Tourniquet Dr. Brad Bennett provided an excellent workshop at the 2010 Wilderness Medical Society annual meeting in Snowmass, Colorado on how to manage severe bleeding, based on his work with the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care. From time to time,
wilderness medicine practitioners encounter situations of severe bleeding, so this information is essential for anyone responsible for the health and safety of outdoor explorers and adventurers.
In a simple algorithm, we learned that the first attempt to control bleeding is almost always direct hand pressure. This is followed by application of a pressure bandage. If that is successful, the victim then is evacuated. If the pressure bandage does not adequately control bleeding on the torso of the victim, t...

this week. I have a lot going on and am feeling stressed. This is what is making me cranky:Blogger was down for most of two days. I find this one of the most epic cases of mismanagement. Yes it is a free service we use to host our blogs but it is part of Google's money making tools (where they are trying to take over the world) but they just severely shot themselves in the foot. Apparently there were some upgrades and maintenance issues and things went wrong and the Blogger service was done for parts of Thursday and most of Friday with no real updates or explanation. I am ready to move my blog to a provider which actually runs parallel servers to ensure these issues don't happen. Its not the problems with service but the lack of communication through the issues. Just imagine if the Google...

Dear Victor the Cat:
I got back together with an ex about a year ago, but he didn’t want to commit to a serious relationship, preferring that we keep it casual (meaning he has freedom to sleep with other women). I thought our “relationship” would fade away when he moved to another city this fall to go to grad school. But he’s kept in constant contact, and we talk daily. He even still tells me that he loves me. But whenever I bring up the idea of us becoming exclusive, he refuses to discuss it. I’m dating other people, but it makes me feel guilty. And thinking of him being with another woman makes me feel sick. What should I do?
Signed,
Stuck and Sad

That said, I think it’s less about what you suggest to your family, and more about how you suggest it. Still, there’s no way that everyone is going to be pleased and happy every year, content with the knowledge that their idea is the best idea. So do what you can, in the most diplomatic way possible. Failing that, start pricing flights to Fiji.

Dear Victor:
Christmas is coming, which for me means major stress about a particular family-related issue. I have a huge immediate family, and everyone has their own ideas about how we should handle Christmas gift-giving. These differences cause major arguments, underlying resentments, and even serious rifts. Some family members think that everyone should buy a gift for everyone else (despite the fact that there are dozens of us, and as many different budgets). Others think they should only have to buy Christmas presents for those family members to whom they’re really close. Still others are adamant that each gift be incredibly special and personalized, even if you only see the recipient once a year. (No iPods or coffee grinders allowed.) And, get this: Some of my adult family member...

Dear Victor:
It’s a short work week, so I’ll make this brief. I recently started dating a guy that I actually had a relationship with in high school (for six months), and then again in college (for another few months). Now, eight years after that, we’ve started seeing each other again. (He currently lives in our hometown, but is in the process of moving to my city — but for him, not for me.) It’s only been a few weeks this time around, and we’ve been able to take things slow, which is good. And we’ve been friends for a long time — also good. My question is: How can I make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes we made in the past? Namely, conflict due to different life goals and communication issues?

However, in a romantic relationship, we rarely get the responses, reactions, and results that we want. (Which is why I’m glad I’m a cat whose balls have been cut off. I don’t require or crave romance, only platonic cuddling.) Unfortunately, you may just have to accept that you and she aren’t together anymore, and that the relationship is over. You may want to start by referring to her as your ex-girlfriend.

Hi Victor.
I’ll cut to the chase. My girlfriend and I have been together for about four years. She has two kids and I have one but we treat and see ourselves as a family of five. There have been problems in the distant past, and last April she moved out. That lasted for about three weeks, and we’ve been back together since then. I’m not perfect, but have been trying to be the best guy I can be for her. In the past I was mistrustful, but that was a long time ago. But you know how it is — when an argument starts it always gets brought up. Up until last Tuesday, everything was going well; there had been a bit of, shall we say, distance from her, but all-in-all we spent every day together and knew everything about each other. She then ditched important plans on us, and then I f...

Dear Victor:
I really like a guy from my acting class. I’m a senior in high school and he is a senior in college so it gets complicated from the get-go. He seems to be into me, we talk several times a week, and then he kissed me once. He asked me to hang out but we are both really busy so it never happened. Then once when we were alone rehearsing a scene we ended up making out. It’s been a month since then and even though I kept trying to set things up, we still haven’t hung out. He seems to want to hook up with me again, but I’m starting to feel like he just ...

Imagine this: you’re allergic to cats. You’ve just been exposed to cat dander and your eyes are a soggy, drippy red mess. You sneeze uncontrollably multiple times in a row. Your skin becomes itchy, red, and full of welts. You’re feeling pretty miserable.
A friend walks up to you.
“Hey, no worries,” he exclaims casually, “there’s nothing to be allergic to!”
Uh, what?
“Sure there is — I’m allergic to cats,” you’d probably say.
“Nah,” says your friend, “just stop sneezing. You’ll be okay.”
“What?! I can’t just STOP sneezing on a dime,” you retort.
“Sure you can. There’s nothing wrong with you,” he insists.
“Uhm, care to explain these welts, then? And the red eyes? And the sneezing?!”
Sounds frustrating, doesn’t it? If you suffe...

What did you do over the weekend?
I spent part of mine watching the 2006 movie Marie Antoinette. It wasn’t the best of the bunch, but it did move me. It got me thinking about a time when women had little power and control over their own lives. When things were decided for you and the world, in general, was chaotic and out of control.
Watching the movie made me grateful for the time that we’re living in now. Yes, it is still chaotic and unpredictable. But for us fortunate ones, we have a lot more control over our emotions, perceptions and our well-being today than we did in the past.
If you’re having some difficulty with getting control over these three, don’t worry because this week’s top posts are all about gaining control of your life. You’ll learn how...

Yes, there are millions of “funny” cat videos online. Some of them are of a cat jumping onto a counter (hi-lar-ious!), or a cat sleeping next to a TV remote (LOL), or a cat wearing a top hat (ha!), and we’re guessing almost all of them are filmed by crazy shut-ins. (What did you just call us?) This one, on the other hand, is different, and, while not LOL funny, is pretty clever – even cat-haters might agree.

Schizophrenia Caused By The Cat?

From the front page of [the August 1st] Baltimore Sun: Researchers Explore Link Between Schizophrenia, Cat Parasite. Frank D. Roylance writes:
Johns Hopkins University scientists trying to determine why people develop serious mental illness are focusing on an unlikely factor: a common parasite spread by cats. The researchers say the microbes, called Toxoplasma gondii, invade the human brain and appear to upset its chemistry — creating, in some people, the psychotic behaviors recognized as schizophrenia. If tackling the parasite can help solve the mystery of schizophrenia, “it’s a pretty good opportunity … to relieve a pretty large burden of disease,” said Dr. Robert H. Yolken, director of developmental neurobiology at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. (more...

We’ve got to balance the slow-jams (even though it was about a hard-core issue) with some serious stuff. Not that it’s uninteresting serious stuff – this video shows a group of smart, powerful women talking about issues that are on our hot list. Katie Couric sat down with Women’s Media Center President Jehmu Greene and Co-Founder Gloria Steinem to talk about the continuing objectification of women in the media and inequality in the workplace, and the family structure. It’s not all bad news though: Greene says that social media is contributing to media literacy among teen girls, and some of them are pushing back against over sexualized images of women in pop culture. But if the lame way women are represented in the media makes you itch for a little levity, don&#821...

IVF patients are always on the lookout for innovations which will improve their chances of success . For example, many IVF patients ask us whether we do IMSI or CAT. These are techniques which have been aggressively promoted in the press, but do not really help the patient at all. I have written about IMSI in an earlier post. Let me discuss CAT ( cumulus-aided transfer) in this post.IVF doctors have always been frustrated by the fact that though we are quite good at growing embryos in the lab, most of these embryos do not become babies. Embryo implantation is an inefficient process, and trying to ensure that every embryo we transfer becomes a baby is the "holy grail" for all IVF specialists , which is why we use techniques such as blastocyst transfer and laser assisted hatching, to try to ...

The costs that corporations say they will have to pay because of the new health legislation continue to climb as Verizon Communications said it will post a one-time charge of $970 million in the first quarter.
The overhaul blocks companies from deducting tax-free subsidies they get from Washington for providing retirees with prescription-drug benefits. That change doesn’t kick in until 2013, but companies are taking the charges now in anticipation.
That’s a bone of contention as the Obama administration officials have said companies are exaggerating the overhaul’s impact because they don’t like the new law. The charges are only a bookkeeping move and don’t require cash payouts by the companies, but corporate tax bills will eventually go up.
First-quarter char...

Being able to appraise an article, but not being able to find the best evidence may be challenging and frustrating to the busy clinicians.

It’s been a banner year!
We began by getting a new minivan complete with a navigation system. It’s been a lifesaver! We have the routes to all the nearest hospitals and pharmacies pre-programmed. With the time we’ve saved from printing out directions, I’m now able to spend some time knitting. I’m just starting out but I made little Rebecca a new sock to chew on.
Since this is the fall, our thoughts turn to falling leaves, fresh rain, and the smell of dry earth with the first raindrops hitting it as well as all the preparations for Halloween. In our small town we have these seasonal decorations of wooden witches attached high above the street to lamp posts all along the avenue. The witches are facing the posts with their little striped stockings and high heeled shoes hanging on one side of the post, their hats askew, as if they are hugging the posts. My little grandson just loves them and says, “Let’s drive by and see the smashing witches.”
During this season we feel like many of the traditional characters. Most of us know what it’s like to feel like a witch, act like a witch and even smash into an occasional post. That post is often repres...

My mother would finish whatever it was that she was making. She would present whatever it was to me and say “so what do you think?” I would think whatever I thought and I would say whatever I said but somehow it was always the wrong answer. They say that we are destined to repeat the lives of our parents.I pull off a few stray threads and microns of fluff from the newly finished cardigan, slip it on, even though it’s really for my daughter, and present myself to my spouse. “So what do you think?” He looks up from his computer screen. “Ooo very nice, it’s looks just like a suit of armour.” I pout and move into the hall where his first born son is ...

A normal part of the psychotherapy process is something therapists call “disclosure.” This is simply your telling the therapist your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, which is a normal process of most types of psychotherapy. Sometimes, though, we have thoughts or feelings which are very near and dear to our hearts, or feelings or experiences that we are deeply embarrassed about. When we share such experiences or feelings in therapy, we might feel like we have “disclosed too much.” And once you let the cat out of the proverbial bag, it’s hard to know how to continue on in the therapeutic relationship.
Disclosing “too much,” however, is not that uncommon an experience. The psychotherapy relationship is an odd one, the kind of relationship that you...

By human standards, our cat Toast is autistic.
Consider:
- She’s unable to understand directions. Fails consistently to respond to such clear commands as “Get off the table!”, or
“Don’t go in the bedroom!” condition seems to be beyond willfulness, and a genuine lack of comprehension.
- Sometimes unusually difficult to toilet-train (see “live independently”)
- Doesn’t clearly articulate needs and desires. Seems to want to be petted, then scurries away. Rubs against the base of
the kitchen counters before mealtimes in an obvious stimming activity rather than just come out and ask for dinner.
Frustrating: If only the language would emerge, our whole concept of Toast would change.
- Loves being brushed. Again, stimming? Rubs her lips against the comb in obvious oral fixatio...

If your family already has a cat and wants to add a dog, or vice versa, how is the best way to ensure that they all get along? It’s good to begin with a carefully orchestrated plan of desensitization. Never force either animal into close proximity with the other. This technique requires a great deal of time and patience. As with all relationships, it cannot be rushed. Each animal needs to progress at their own pace. One easy place to start is to feed each animal it’s favourite treat by hand at the same time so that they can then learn to associate treats and the new pet, with positive associations. If this is done on a regular basis, gradually they will hopefully become physically closer.Currently, our cats are not keen on the dog but will tolerate being in the same room together. As we ...

Some time ago I wrote the post, Pets for Alzheimer’s Patients. Today one of my readers shared with me:
We have 5 adult cats. Mom enjoys the fact that usually there’s at least one to sit on her lap or to sleep with her nightly or whenever she takes a nap.
My mother, who was never overly fond of cats, became quite attached to one as her Alzheimer’s developed. When we had to move her to our home, 275 miles from where she was living, my husband suggested we bring her cat. That did help Mother settle better here and was something familiar for her.
However, don’t feel badly if you can’t have pets for your Alzheimer’s patient. You will be the one to care for them, so it may be more than you can undertake. Also, the animal may be overwhelming to the pa...

Feeling stressed out? New research suggests the benefit of getting a pet for college students:

Students who chose to live with at least one dog, one cat, or a combination of the two were less likely to report feeling lonely and depressed; something they directly attributed to their beloved pet.

While previous research has shown that pets help many specific populations (such as people with a chronic illness, senior citizens, and people who live alone), this is the first study to show this effect is also present in young adults.
Freshmen and sophomores, especially, are at risk for loneliness and stress, as they are just establishing their college social network. And while online social networks help the transition for many, face-to-face friends are often just as important to help a per...

This was actually taken on chemo day but it kind of sums up what I feel like doing. Note the bed, the book and the laptop. The only thing missing is a great big chocolate bar.And yes, that is the world's meanest cat, all cuddled up with me. Don't be fooled by appearances. One false move and he'd slit my throat.I've actually been doing some non-blog writing today, so not much left over for this space. Please bear with me. There will be a more substantial post one these days, I promise. (Source: Not just about cancer)

Dear President ObamaI know you have a big job ahead of you involving all sorts of mess and chaos. I sorta know what you are facing as I have a cat and a new kitten who simply cannot get along. The kitten is impulsive, out of control, lacking in subtlety and restraint, and defiant. Not at all dissimilar to many people you will have to interact with in the near future. I contrast the first born cat is grumpy, unforgiving, completely lacking in humor and inflexible. Also eerily alike various individuals you will shortly be spending time with.My cats do not get along under any circumstances...except when one very special ingredient is added to the interaction. This addition is so exceptional and potent that it makes even the most curmudgeonly cat soften. So transforming and influential it make...

When I entitled my last post “Now reading,” I meant it especially much. I am still reading it, almost exclusively out of the pile of my current reading.
What the Anticancer book giving me is a plan of living, post cancer, so as to minimize the possibility of a relapse. As Gail said in her response a bit further down, on “Cancer myths, and recovering,” this fear never really leaves one. It’s always somewhere in your head, buried, it is to be hoped, under many happier thoughts.
What I am doing: haven’t had meat since Tuesday (or was it Monday?), giving up sugar for agave nectar (delicious as honey or sugar, but with much lower glycemic index), trying to eat more plain fresh fruit and dried figs. One can have real sugar, etc, but only as an occasional treat...

Review: Field Notes Brand Pocket Notebook:

Breck shared his opinions of the Field Notes:
“You can see for yourself below how much pride of provenance DDC/CP take in their product. When manufacturers put this all out there, you know they believe in what they’re doing. Sometimes the product is still junk (I’m looking at you, Tom’s of Maine GingerMint toothpaste. Why wait all night to develop morning breath when you can just squeeze it straight from a tube?), but it’s still nice to see sources and methods listed.
Other printing on this book includes absolutely perfectly proportioned and placed blocks to put owner info, record the dates of use, and offer or decline to offer a reward if lost and found…”

Dexter is still cute. Very cute. He is also still exceptionally smelly. The vet says he is fine and often kittens do not have the best digestive systems at young ages so I’ve been experimenting with different foods and might have found some that are less rank gas producing than others. I might publish a research paper: Feline Colon Inexperience and Greenhouse Gasses-Nature's Balance Between Cute and Killer

Here is the kitteh update you’ve all been asking for.
How is Yoshi doing? Well…not great but not terribly awful either. She stopped eating all together a couple days ago and still occasionally (meaning pretty much every day) yaks bile which, I’ve discovered, leaves a lovely green stain on my carpet. Who said having cats was not like having kids? My berber disagrees.
So I started getting desperate and bought all sorts of yummy things Yoshi might successfully ingest with no luck. I vacillated wildly between guilt and exasperation. It was not pretty around here.
I tried to push the limits a little by keeping the cats separated all of the time except in the evenings when I allowed them to be in the same room with each other-supervised for fair play and safety. And the thing is t...

Today Katherine Hilker from the Cincinnati Zoo’s cat ambassador program invited up over to the Mast farm, where they were going to run a pair of the beasts; to exercise them properly. They were going to run them three times with us lucky ones behind fences that they shouldn’t want to jump, much. They don’t have retractable claws like other cats do, but the forefeet of dogs.
These two brothers are together all the time and today they got to run together: Chance and Bravo.
I got lots of excellent pictures, and I think I got some proper ones.
Mostly the whole collection is here. However, for the fortunate few, here’s a taste.
Bravo is ahead of his brother. (Source: white pebble)

Day 3 of Kitteh Intro Hell:Yoshi is really, really, REALLY pissed. She has taken to barfing twice a day on a 12 hour-you-could-time-your-watch-to-it schedule. She also will froth at the mouth to make a point of her displeasure. She won't eat. Not even tuna. Today she has taken to her bed with the vapors. In Yoshi world that means she is in her Snoozen Housen and won't come out. Last night after a little hissing but mostly curious sniffings I brought the kitten out and I think that is when Yoshi realized that he was not even remotely phased by her growlings and might actually be hanging around. Things got nasty when the kitten went to jump up on the sofa where Yoshi was. She literally screamed, punched the kitten in the head and then levitated off the couch to behind the plant knocking over...

Well, let’s see what I’ve been up to lately. You know; typical summer stuff. My very good friend, Pablo came for a visit from Montreal and we went to the beach a couple times and even went Par 3 Golfing with my mom. I was caddy with the putters. I put my panic disorder to the test and actually ate out in a restaurant twice. So YAY! On the down side I mysteriously broke out in terrible hives for about three days. I had huge welts or hives on my knees, shins, one foot, upper arms hands (including palms) and chest. A monstrous dose of antihistamines did the trick. No clue what I might have reacted too. My doc thinks it could be sun. I may have to rethink a Cuban vacation in the near future. Also Pablo had to cut his Vancouver vacation very short due to work issues. Dammit! So I’ve ...

Apropos of the second-to-last blog entry, I have been seriously delving into Natsume Soseki’s I Am a Cat. As you might guess somewhat from the title, Our Hero is a nameless cat, who lives in the house of a teacher and his family. He (the cat) makes wonderfully sly observations on the humans surrounding him.
Now I want more Soseki. What goes on the reading list next: Kokoro. (Source: white pebble)

When I recently dog-sat Lulu and Xiola for 5 days I bought them some new toys to play with at my house. Their particular favourite was this hedgehog that made an alarming "ack ack ack" noise when shaken. The dogs LOVED it. They loved it so much I found myself tripping on it quite often when it was left in the middle of my floor. Except when that would happen I'd do that awkward 'sacrifice your spine alignment' avoidance skip/jump/lurch because I always thought this toy was actually Yoshi and I was about to step on her. If I didn't actually have any reflexes and had the luxury of time to think about it I'd never make that mistake as Yoshi, for the first 3 days never left my bedroom. Never.I started calling the hedgehog Yoshi since it was under my feet far more than she was that weekend.Then...

I wanted to do a little movie for you all but with a recent update of my Quicktime plugins I now cannot do anything unless I 'BUY NOW" the whole software package. Not to mention the fact that no other programs on my computer recognize the Quicktime movie format (MOV) all of a sudden. DAMMIT!So here is a plain old unedited video for you.
This study suggested that pet ownership amongst many older people is more of a burden than a benefit.
What about for younger folks? In a 2006 survey of 2,291 adults in the U.S., researchers found that unmarried women who live with a pet have the fewest depressive symptoms, and unmarried men who live with a pet have the most (Tower et al., 2006). The researchers concluded, “single women benefit from pet companionship, whereas single men may be burdened by it.”
A dissertation published in 2004 by Amanda Smith examined 38 married couples, half of which who owned dogs and half who did not. She found no significant differences between the two groups on marital communication, stress levels, constructive communications, marital satisfaction, or consideration of divorce. In other wo...

So I came upon Sweet Yoshi flaked out on the couch today. Her pose made me think she might be indulging in some Passive Cat Yoga.As I moved to get a different angle of her chillaxed Yoga Pose I realised she was actually up to no good. Yoshi, clearly not so sweet after all, was Representin' Her Feline Posse. Instead of participating in an ancient mind and body exercise she was actually flashing a gang sign.I was being dissed with one of the most grievous gang signs known to cats (only to be out-harshed by the infamous presentation of the 'Oh No You DIDN' Cat Yack Deposit') -the ever vehemently apathetic 'W' for WHATEVER!Dude...
Angelbait is home and convalescing better than expected. Kamikaze is hissy and I feel drunk. Think mental health reform is contentious? I think the similarities with feline diabetes are about to blow my mind.
The learning curve is steep, a week ago I did not know feline diabetes existed and today I’ve got a handle on the basics of diet, syringes, lancets, meters, ketones, spreadsheets, blood glucose home-testing, and my favorite, how to introduce hyperglycemia during insulin shock, which led to complete meltdown and eccentric 3 AM googling (guess which one is mine, ha ha ha).
Yes, long-term hyperglycemia is bad, but you have to introduce it temporarily during hypoglycemia to save the cat’s life. Oh, ok. Now then, spend 3 days tracking down the ingredients in a can of cat food, ...

I have been consumed with feline diabetes the last few days, as I should, it’s complex as it gets and the knowledge base as demanding as that of informed mental health patients. Angelbait will need me to test her glucose 4 times a day, before and after I give her the shots, that means pricking her ear and getting the reading on a monitor. She will need prescription food and I have to figure out how to do things like get the insulin from the vet to my house in 100 degree heat without a car, the insulin has to be kept refrigerated. This home-based disease management will cost about 150 a month, the only way that will work is if I quit smoking. And I have to figure out how to do all this when the legislature is in session, and bills are passed at 2 AM, when I’m at the Capitol 18 h...

How ambitious am I? We really wanted to get a dog from a shelter or a rescue organization (J-Dog is a rescue and possibly the best dog in the history of dog-dom). But we needed a dog that is healthy, good with kids, other dogs and cats (we almost adopted a wheaten terrier from a rescue group during winter but when the dog met a cat, he tried to eat it. Literally). And hypoallergenic (D. is mildly allergic to both dogs and cats and we couldn't in good conscious bring another dog into the house who would irritate his allergies). We also needed a dog who would happily come on long walks or runs with me when I am well and take it easier on th...

What are the odds of that?
My cat almost died this weekend. I blame myself because it’s my fault. She is at the vet undergoing diagnostic tests but that’s just a formality, she almost certainly has advanced diabetes. I won’t go there yet. This post is about life in the digital age, the building bricks of our modern revolution. How this technology is creating the democratization of all that is designed to keep us unequal, ignorant, dependent and enslaved to the rules of hierarchy.
By now it should be apparent: I haven’t slept in 3 days, not since I decided I couldn’t keep treating Angelbait for what I wanted to believe were behavioral issues. I hit the Web Saturday morning to get business-like with her symptoms, read non-stop, and by Sunday morning knew I&#8217...

New CT technology is offering a quicker and more cost effective way to manage chest pain complaints in the ER. CAT (Computed tomography angiography) aids in identifying patients at low-risk of cardiac problems like the blocked arteries that lead to heart attacks. The center for Medicare and Medicaid services have yet to decide on whether to pay for the service in the ER.
What are the benefits of CAT?
Costs for patients who received immediate CTA in the emergency department averaged about $1,240, while costs of stress testing and telemetry monitoring topped $4,000 for each patient. CTA also helped get low-risk chest pain patients home faster, potentially reducing emergency room crowding — study patients who received immediate CTA were discharged after an average of 8 hours, compared t...

Eli has taken to chasing his tail (and catching it) again, an activity that apparently became an obsession when I was in London (he doesn't have to like me, apparently to miss my presence in the house during the day). Upon my return, it became routine for us to wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of a hissing, spitting cat fight taking place at the foot of the bed (and we only have the one cat).Last Monday morning, I was sitting in the living room when I heard ear-splitting yowling coming from the kitchen. I ran into a scene straight out of a horror movie, as blood gushed from a three-inch gash at the end of Eli's tail. I needed it. Oh, I needed it.I'm starting to feel almost like I miss him. I'd been dreading his return, but it's been long enough now. I'd like for him to come home, I think.I am afraid, though. Every little sprouting hope feels so vulnerable, so tiny and scary. He did this thing that I really liked when he was leaving town. It was new...he gets his money deposited into my account for his methadone maintenance, and I go with him and pay at the clinic because he says money is triggering for him.
So Yoshi turned 10 years old on Monday and we celebrated with a can of crab (which she turned her nose up at) and a call from the on-call vet with a diagnosis of severe urine crystals. He seemed quite concerned and hoped Yoshi was feeling better. I had to explain that Yoshi is feeling just fine and has no symptoms at all of this condition. I just had the testing done as a routine thing at her last check-up. He was confused and told me to make the cat drink more water to flush those little suckers out.Yeah...ok.So she has a lovely brand new water fountain which she sniffs at and perhaps touches her tongue to but otherwise pretty much ignores. So it just sits there making gurgling noises which inspires a somewhat uncomfortable feeling in my bladder leading to the occasional pee pee dance.I'v...

Today's sappy cat blogging highlights One of A Kind Pets--which has a storefront operation in a converted Krispy Kreme shop on Market St. in Akron. They have loads of cats (and dogs, too no bigots they) that are fixed, vetted, and looking for a home. They're right next to the West Point Market--I stop by both places when I'm in Akron. They have some delightful cats, including this little love here. One of a Kind pets is at 1699 West Market Street, Akron, OH 44313. (Source: Dr. Zeus's Forensic Files)

It's Friday, so it's time for Sappy Cat Blogging. Today's blogging is about Bank News, a rather interesting newsstand in a converted bank building on W 41st and Clark Ave. Gil (the owner) has an amazing variety of magazines. One of my greatest pleasures is to go to a well-stocked magazine stand and find something totally new. So, at Gil's you can get a copy of Model Railroader, Master Mariner, Good Food, Scottish Travel, or lots of other things. He also carries indie comics, old gun magazines, and most of Paladin Press' line as well.He also has wide and varied selection of porn, including some things that surprised me greatly-but that's not what this is about.Evidently, one day, a pregnant queen came in, and stayed. Now Gil has eight cats, several calicos, two tuxedo kitties, and a couple ...

I've been busy shopping and cleaning and getting ready for my cousin to visit on Monday. She is almost 20 years old so I have to make my pad as cool and groovy as possible. This is no small feat and I am, frankly, exhausted already.Yes, I know by saying cool and groovy and pad I've just earned all 20 year olds' distain forever. Like, who totally cares?Yoshi has been helping me out by sleeping the whole weekend and keeping her shedded fur in a small easily contained area. However, she has resorted to some creative coping postures to avoid the pungent stench caused by me scrubbing and wiping with vinegar. My apartment smells like a salad. Environmentally safe for everybody but none too pleasant for sensitive noses.Regular cute sleeping posture.Smell avoidance sleeping posture. (Source: Von K...

I had an odd run in with some people the other night. One individual, who's on the frail side, was mentioning missing having a pet. Having a companion. Something to talk to. This person felt it would not be fair to a dog, there would be difficulties walking it, and so on and so forth.I like dogs myself. I my schedule can't do them justice. But there are plenty of animals that need a home HERE. This shelter will euthanize, it's a worry. Cats are fine for a person who is worried about getting around. The dominant personality in the group, who doesn't live with the petless person, hates cats. Loudly. (Source: Dr. Zeus's Forensic Files)

She stopped eating last night after her 6 pm wet food dinner and barfed a couple times today. She rallied a bit and ate a little wet food for dinner tonight and then promptly yacked it up again. Poor little pooper. But she just ate a little more food a few minutes ago and it seems to be staying down. I hate it when she is sick because she is normally such a healthy cat. Also because she never manages to hurl on the linoleum parts of the apartment. Only on the beige carpet part and exactly where I walk most.I took her to the vet on Monday for just a check-up. I do that every couple of years to confirm that she is healthy and happy. Since she is going to be 10 years o...

Every blue moon I cook up a huge pot of tomato sauce to spoon into small serving sized containers for my freezer. I hate cooking so this is the only way I can avoid scurvy. One nasty cooking hour resulting in several wondrous microwaving minutes at later dates.Yoshi should count her blessings that this phenomenon doesn't happen more regularly because her aversion to the smell of onions being cut up is very dramatic and fraught with anguish and despair. As I start chopping the onions (said in a Creole accent-Onyons!) I can see her out of the corner of my eye sniffing the air with a decidedly peevish cast to her ears. Then the obsessive head tossing and lip smacking begins. This part lasts for several minutes.By this time most likely the onions are in the skillet and the worst is over. My strea...

The Cleveland Museum of Art has one of the finest collections of Asian art in the world--and we'll ignore the open warrant that is still extant for one of the old directors. Sherman Lee created the Asian collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and it is a wonderful body of work. As a child and as an adult who works in the University Circle area, I never tire of looking at it.Which has skewed my perspective, I guess, because I find it difficult to wrap my head around a lot of Asian kitsch. Like Hello Kitty, which, I suppose would be Kitty-Kitsch. Anyway, some perverted geniuses in Japan have come up with a way to make your own, very own, LIVE cat into Hello Kitty. HERE If you do inflict this on your cat, I do hope they eliminate in your shoes, among other things. (Source: Dr. Zeus's Fore...

It's Friday (just), so it's time for sappy cat blogging! Today's kitty is Titania, from the San Francisco Zoo. Forensic pathologists have long decried the lack of the sixth manner of death on most death certificates, the "Dumbicide". Evidently the three people mauled by Titania were trying to get into her cage.aIn Ohio, we have a problem with deer overpopulation. Just last Friday I was within a close pistol shot of two whitetail next to the Unitarian Universalist church on Shaker Boulevard. At 1100h, there they were in the hedgerow, looking like a print. Some communities, like Solon, bring in sharpshooters, which causes lawsuits and complaints by whingers. Personally, I think the re-introduction of large carnivores would do wonders at decreasing the deer population and decreasing urban spr...

While gift shopping for kids on my list, I discovered Goodwill is awash in peculiar plush toys. You can buy them seriously cheap because they’re not the latest Gund or Ty creations. Winnie the Pooh, Elmo and Snoopy don’t live here. Instead you’ll find scowling turtles, polka dotted squirrels, chequered dogs, and animals morphed into something you can’t even identify. Is it a cheerleader or an owl? Whatever it is, somebody didn’t want it, and now it’s in a bin of rejected toys waiting forlornly for a new home.
Shoppers snub them despite their desperate discount availability. What’s 50 cents for a new used toy? Do people ignore them because they’re used, thrift store stigma? I don’t see why it’s important to give a gift that has a...

Today's Sappy Cat is an Asian Fishing Cat, happily? living with a Russian family, whos album can be seen HERE. This is a handsome devil, and those jaws look darn powerful. It's chew toy is a sphygmomamometer bulb. The cat requires a live diet, and the family lets it catch catfish in the bathtub, as well as the occasional live chicken. I will point out that they do no have wall-to-wall carpeting. You can see that it appears affectionate. Reports that these cats have withstood attacks by packs of dogs, though, makes me hesitant to let one into my household. (for scale, the cat is about as large as the toilet, you can see it in the photograph). I love wild animals, and I treasure my time working with them at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. But those were rescues. Non-damages wild one...

Why have I gotten so many consults on dead cats? Not that I really mind. It's mildly depressing, it's rather challenging because it's outside my area of expertise. I know of two veterinary pathologist, but I don't think any of them do forensics. They make big big bucks in pharma-land.Hmm. Perhaps I have discovered a niche market. But can I make a living at it?
Tonight, I am stoned from the Demerol that I am given to mitigate the side-effects of the Herceptin.Boy, typing is hard when I'm stoned.I am reading, A Three Dog Life, a memoir by Abigail Thomas. She starts her book with the following quote from Wikipedia; Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a 'three-dog night.' I am loving this book. I am seriously too stoned to be coherent as to why, so here is the blurb from Abigail's web site: When Abigail Thomas’s husband, Rich, was hit by a car, his brain shattered. Subject to rages, terrors, and hallucinations, he must live the rest of his life in an institution. He has no memory of what he did the hour, the day, the year before. This tragedy is the ground on which Abigail had to build a new life...

I am home. And exhausted.I have to get up early tomorrow, to go to for abdominal and thoracic CT scans (also known as CAT scans) .Once someone has had cancer, every headache, stitch, lump, bump or bout of dizziness becomes suspect. And every test, no matter how routine is fraught with anxiety.I have been the best kind of busy these last few days. The conference and the time I spent with friends and family (as well as the chance to change my environment for a while) provided both a distraction and more reassurance than a fist full of tranquilizers. But I do feel a little queasy and a little a lot scared when I think about what the results of this test could mean. The worst doesn't bear thinking about, actually; so I'm trying not to do so.And right now, with my youngest asleep, my oldest in t...

2x genomes—Does depth matter?
Cat joins exclusive genome club - I’m waiting for RPM to respond to the phrase “have its DNA decoded”.
Interesting commentary in Genome Research by Phil Green, of Phrap fame. He argues that whilst useful information can be gleaned from low-coverage genome sequence, we are surely missing the most interesting regions:

More seriously, since very few features of any appreciable size (e.g., genes) will be completely covered, analyses requiring complete features cannot be carried out. In addition, as was noted above, whole-genome assemblies (of any depth) often fail to incorporate a significant fraction of the repetitive sequence in the genome. This is often considered to be a relatively minor deficiency, which may be true so long as the primary res...

The Genome Research Journal is reporting that researchers have completed the first full genetic map of a domestic cat. The research is already advancing the research into a common cause of human blindness. The cat genome is showing some surprising results in that cats and humans appear to have some qualities that are uniquely in common with each other. The cat is a descendant of lab cats bred to develop retinitis pigmentosa which is a degenerative eye disease that causes blindness.Dr. Stephen O'Brien, of the National Cancer Institute, believes that the study of cat genes can uncover some of the causes of retinitis pigmentosa and may help find treatments for the condition. Cats also are important for studying other diseases, O'Brien said. "The reasons why the cat genome is ...

A few exciting firsts occurred on Sunday which made for a very special day. First of all I met my very first fellow blogger for reals. I connected with Twisted Uterus who is in town for a vet conference. It was a fantastic surreal experience and very cool to meet her in person. She is a bubbly and enthusiastic lady and we hit it off right away chatting up a storm that didn’t abate the whole day. I met her in her hotel lobby at 11 am and she graced me with a wonderful TU original pottery piece which I was honoured to receive. We walked through downtown to the beach where we hopped on a water ferry to Granville Island to do some mooching around.Cherished Giftie It was quite crowded but very festive with all the colourful produce and other goodies. Twisty took photo after photo which tur...

In my last post’s comments section a few of you hoped that it might be possible to permanently integrate Lulu into The Kranki Krash Pad since Yoshi was much better with this visit. Believe me, I was watching for all the signs this might happen. Sadly, I know that Yoshi and Lulu are better off where they are right now. Lulu is far more confident and outgoing with her sister dog, Xiola. On her own she is nervous and prone to separation anxiety and follows me everywhere. She whimpers at the door when I am in the bathroom, for poop’s sake. She also seems upset and a little afraid by Yoshi’s hissing and spitting. I am sure this is something I could work on over time but she is so obviously happier with another dog to give her comfort and companionship. Yoshi, while much better, was cle...
