When I was in kindergarten, a stray cat found her way into our backyard in upstate New York. As is the case with most stray cats, she quickly had a litter of kittens in our basement. We gave most of them to friends and neighbors, but we kept one little black and white kitten. I don’t remember exactly how, but somehow she got the name Abby. When my parents got divorced, my mom got the kids and my dad got the cat (that isn’t exactly how it went, but the result was the same). We all loved that cat so much, it wasn’t all that weird when my brother named his daughter the same thing almost ten years ago. This year, at Christmas Eve services, the pastor at my brother’s church was talking about the importance of meaning behind names. I leaned over to my niece and mentioned about the cat.
FAQ
Rose = reindeer. Bes = elf. Mostly because you couldn't see the scarf of the elf outfit through Rose's fur.I missed the first year and last year, but we have been taking a Christmas card picture together pretty much since I moved to Florida and away from family. (2008, 2007, 2006)Yes, they are sitting in the chair by themselves. They are kinda used to it... And when you put clothes on cats it throws off their sense of balance so they had trouble getting up even when they tried. They each weigh about 14 pounds. They have a small food dish and I only feed them once a day. Slow metabolism?I am not the crazy cat lady! (Source: Diabetes Daily)

I love the Christmas season. I don't love that there is sooo much to do to get ready! I've done a little bit of my shopping but have several family members left to go. Does anyone have some good ideas for a 9 year old girl and an 8 year old boy? Or a good place/website for me to look? One thing that can definitely be crossed off the list is the annual Christmas card photo shoot. Finished that on Sunday. Here are some outtakes! If you want to see the actual card, make sure I have your address (e-mail me at sara [at] diabetesdaily [dot] com). I love exchanging Christmas cards, so the more the merrier! Also crossed off the list is the plane ticket to head home. Gosh! You'd think it would be easier to negotiate family visits as we get older. California friends, it's time to schedule the meet-ups!...

You couldn’t tell by looking at me, but I moonlight as a tarot card reader for a 1-800 network. Honestly.
A lot of people are surprised by this tidbit of information whenever they hear it — apparently most of us think the majority of psychics own hundreds of cats and reek of patchouli. But it’s been a good source of income for me for about a year now. Everyone has their own opinion about cards and clairvoyance, but in my world, these things are simply tools to help us along the highway of life.
My opinions on the matter aside (believe me, I’ve had the “it’s real / it’s not real” debate one too many times with family members and annoying strangers alike), I’ve recently noticed a psychological trend that’s made me rethink the way I ...

Check out this post about married people and their pets by Liz Ozaist on Lemondrop.
If you’re a married woman, chances are you spend a lot of time chatting it up with your canine or cat instead of your human companion.
According to a recent Associated Press/Petside poll, a third of married gals claim their furry live-ins are much better listeners than their husbands. Of the 1,112 people surveyed nationwide, one in 10 said they’d rather kvetch to their pet than their betrothed — and 18 percent of those respondents were actually men!

I take full advantage of that and try to head home as quickly as possible to have enough time to see all my family and friends. As a result, I have to get my Christmas decorations up as early as possible or I'm just not here long enough to enjoy them. So last Friday, as I was still digesting turkey I got out the ornaments and lights. I am renting my apartment so I can't do as much as I want, but I make it as festive as possible. While she hasn't caused any problems yet, there is one other resident of this apartment who also seems to be really enjoying the decorations. I've got my eye on her.I have the outfits picked out and will be taking my annual Christmas picture shortly. If I don't have your address and yo...

You also probably know about the Big Blue Test (whose video got over 100,000 views so $75,000 will be donated to children in need). Here is what the Big Blue Test looked like for me:First, while I tested and exercised, the cats did this.I got my WiiFit board set up and ready to go.At 2 pm, I checked my blood glucose. Then I hopped (not really, you aren't supposed to jump on it) on the WiiFit board and got to work. After 14 minutes, I checked my blood glucose again. There was an immediate reduction in my numbers - the power of exercise! If you want to see the longer term effects of exercise, check out the Dexcom almost a half an hour later.Check out this page to find out more about the Big Blue Test around the world.&nb...

If you thought obese humans are the only creatures on earth susceptible to harm from a diet pill, consider overweight dogs, specifically those taking Pfizer’s Slentrol pill. The FDA is planning a pharmacogenomic study to determine whether reported adverse drug events are associated with genetic variations in the dogs treated with the pill, which was approved in 2007.
Why? A preliminary analysis by the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine indicates potential correlations between certain dog breeds and some side effects, according to a notice in the Federal Register. The notice did not specify side effects or breeds, but Slentrol labeling shows that vomiting occurred in nearly 25 percent of the dogs, 12 percent suffered diarrhea and nearly 10 percent grew lethargic (so much for r...

A Massachusetts woman has filed a lawsuit against Merck and another company, Digital Angel, which make implantable radio tracking chips for pets, and claims her cat developed cancer after an implant was inserted, The Boston Globe writes.
In a lawsuit filed in Cambridge District Court, Andrea Rutherford claims the companies violated an implied warranty that Merck’s HomeAgain chip was safe, and seeks “reasonable compensatory damages and interest.’’ The devices contain chips that transmit an ID code and can be scanned so lost pets are returned to their owners (read more here). Merck acquired the Home Again product line when it bought Schering-Plough and its Intervet animal health business.
Animal rights lawyer Steven Wise, who is Rutherford’s attorney, tells the Globe that she f...

Imagine this: you’re allergic to cats. You’ve just been exposed to cat dander and your eyes are a soggy, drippy red mess. You sneeze uncontrollably multiple times in a row. Your skin becomes itchy, red, and full of welts. You’re feeling pretty miserable.
A friend walks up to you.
“Hey, no worries,” he exclaims casually, “there’s nothing to be allergic to!”
Uh, what?
“Sure there is — I’m allergic to cats,” you’d probably say.
“Nah,” says your friend, “just stop sneezing. You’ll be okay.”
“What?! I can’t just STOP sneezing on a dime,” you retort.
“Sure you can. There’s nothing wrong with you,” he insists.
“Uhm, care to explain these welts, then? And the red eyes? And the sneezing?!”
Sounds frustrating, doesn’t it? If you suffe...

What did you do over the weekend?
I spent part of mine watching the 2006 movie Marie Antoinette. It wasn’t the best of the bunch, but it did move me. It got me thinking about a time when women had little power and control over their own lives. When things were decided for you and the world, in general, was chaotic and out of control.
Watching the movie made me grateful for the time that we’re living in now. Yes, it is still chaotic and unpredictable. But for us fortunate ones, we have a lot more control over our emotions, perceptions and our well-being today than we did in the past.
If you’re having some difficulty with getting control over these three, don’t worry because this week’s top posts are all about gaining control of your life. You’ll learn how...

Yes, there are millions of “funny” cat videos online. Some of them are of a cat jumping onto a counter (hi-lar-ious!), or a cat sleeping next to a TV remote (LOL), or a cat wearing a top hat (ha!), and we’re guessing almost all of them are filmed by crazy shut-ins. (What did you just call us?) This one, on the other hand, is different, and, while not LOL funny, is pretty clever – even cat-haters might agree.

With all the many crappy books being published that are based on blogs and Twitter accounts, it seems like any subject – however moronic – is fair game. And after we saw this clip about Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World of Kitty Wigs, we knew it was time to think of a dumb idea for a book and make it happen. This photographer seems to get that the book is ridiculous, but she seems suspiciously into the feline photo shoots.
So: Convenience Stores of West Virginia? Bathroom toothbrush vs. travel toothbrush? Pitch us your stupidest coffee table book idea in the comments section, below.

Eco-Friendly Pets: Are Puppies Really Bad for the Environment?

Your dog doesn’t drive a car, use electronics in an office building, or drink bottled water (he doesn’t, does he?), which sounds pretty eco-friendly to us. But according to Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, dogs are worse for the earth than SUVs. We’ll have to read the book to find out exactly why, but we’re guessing it has to do with unsustainable pet food and plastic toys. Eco Salon suggests that if you aren’t already a dog-owner, you may want to try a more eco-friendly pet like a hamster, canary, fish, or cat.
But…but…but…We love dogs. We think that as long as you try to make your pet’s life as green as you can, you should adopt that puppy you’ve been visiting in the shelter. After all, who el...

BSparl loves to sleep ... but on her own damn schedule, thank you very much. She doesn't like naps between 9 am and 3 pm, she wakes up in the middle of the night whenever she deems fit, and she has no use for the bassinet that my very generous best friend loaned to us. So we moved the bassinet into the living room and I have these lofty plans of getting it back to the NBF sometime before we leave for Florida.Unfortunately, someone else had plans for this discarded napper: Me: "Siah, you are not a baby."Cat: "Meow, meow ... I mean wah wah, hold me. Also, I chewed on a pacifier and claimed that sucka, too."Me: "Good pun, but seriously, get out of the bassinet." I can't stand this cat.
Who doesn’t love a really good cat video? Turns out, a lot of people, mostly because they don’t like cats. Perhaps you include yourself among those evil ranks. But just take 0:08 seconds to watch this video from Funny or Die, and we swear you won’t be sorry. Especially if you like to hate on cats.

Just about time to say adieu to the week and rock on to the weekend!
Two very philosophical posts today:

Yeah, oldies – but goodies! This is topical given the assignments I’ve just marked and the exams that will be coming along in a fortnight!

I’m guessing that wasn’t recently…

Enjoy your weekend preparations!

I haven’t yet got to my third post about feline ethics, which is going to be about power. But I just found out today that an article I thought was only in a print copy of Mouth Magazine is also published online by Disability Studies Quarterly.
I had gotten the article because someone claimed in response to a feline ethics post, that everyone who loved animals would agree that euthanasia is a good thing. And AnneC pointed out that this is not in fact the case, and that she (as I do) has serious problems with the overuse of euthanasia on cats. And I remembered this article. Unique in breaking the massive taboo against questioning pet euthanasia:
Disability Culture Meets Euthanasia Culture: Lessons From My Cat
The biggest power we have over cats is the power of life and death. Whether ...

Many of us try to be as eco-friendly as our budgets allow. Green thinking probably has spread to a variety of areas in your life – shopping, eating, cleaning habits. But what about Fido or Mittens? Check out these tips on how to make your pet’s life more eco-friendly.
1. Check out what type of cat litter you buy; if it’s lumping clay, it could expose you to carcinogenic silica dust. Switch to one made from pine, wheat, or newspaper, like Swheat Scoop.
2. Make sure the flea or tick treatments you use aren’t toxic. They could contain pesticides that leave residue on your pet’s fur, and cause them to have brain or nervous system damage. Check out some natural treatments for animals here.
3. Reconsider what your pet eats. Some pet foods contain chemi...

Sloane Crosley is the author of the upcoming book, How Did You Get This Number? (and the Times bestseller, I Was Told There Would Be Cake.) It’s always interesting to take a peek into other people’s closets and cabinets and see what sort of things they like. But we’re not inclined to be that invasive. (Breaking and entering is not something we do regularly.) So we’ve asked some of our favorite people what their favorite brands are. Here’s Sloane’s product dossier:

Moisturizer: Kiehl’s. I can’t remember what it’s called, but the white one everyone uses.

Cats can use mirrors.

Conventional wisdom goes that since, when given the classic and highly species-biased “mirror test”, cats “flunk” it, then they don’t know that their reflection is not themselves, and don’t in fact know that mirrors reflect things and that they can see behind themselves using mirrors and so forth.
AnneC and I are trying to debunk a lot of similar myths about cats. The tests cats are given are often not cat-friendly and don’t reflect cats in their usual environment doing their usual things. And I’ve long known that Fey uses mirrors. In fact sometimes she uses two mirrors at once — the one over the sink and the one on the bathroom door — to make direct eye contact with people. More than one staff person who thought cats couldn&#821...

[Photo shows Fey, a grey ticked cat with a white stripe down her belly, white paws, white chin, and a white four-pointed star on her nose, with yellow-green eyes. She is lying on her side, with one paw curled over.]
Today was one of the first days it was warm enough to take Fey out again since last fall. As usual, she was not happy with the actual feel of being lifted and put into the PetPocket. But everything else about her behavior — even including loving to sleep on the PetPocket — has always seemed to show that the good part of these walks tends to outweigh the bad (although when you’re dealing with someone whose only language is Feline, it’s always possible you’re missing something m...

But surprise, Mikey does like it!We sent the final chapters of the draft of our book to our editor. So far, the process entails a bounce back, and sullen words like "this isn't working"...and then a lot of obsessing, a re-write, and finally we get to, "this is much better." It's become a bit of a joke--we build in time for her to hate it. This Sunday, I stayed in my pajamas. I sat in front of a computer all day long. I didn't go out. I was ironing out the kinks in the last two chapters.
Feline Ethics, Part 2: Avoiding Arrogance

This is the second in an ongoing series of posts about feline-human ethics. The first post is Dealing with cats, part 1: What is Respect? The current post is on the topic of avoiding arrogance. The post that’s currently planned as the next post will be about the power humans hold over cats.
Human arrogance towards cats frequently goes two apparently opposiite directions.
1. Cats are like miniature humans in every way. They understand every word of what we say, are motivated by exactly the things that motivate us, and if they don’t respond exactly how we expect another human to respond then they are just being stubborn, callous, cruel, manipulative, etc. Any attempt to say otherwise relegates cats to the realm of dumb animals.
2. Cats are totally unlike and inferior to humans...

The poor beast had clearly not been killed outright, and performed the most awful convulsive dance on the road, leaping about, in an effort perhaps to get away from the terrible pain it must have been in.It lasted just a minute, but felt longer, and left a pall ov...

Working from my home office definitely is making for a more comfortable last trimester. I'm able to put my feet up constantly (to ward off Le Puff), I can test my blood sugar and eat randomly at whatever schedule BSparl dictates that day, and I can (thank GOD) wear sweatpants more often than maternity clothes, saving me a ton of money on trying to find outfits that are appropriate for my basketball belly.Only problem is ... well, my coworkers. They're freaking animals.Prussia takes meetings constantly, and is always on conference calls. (Oh, it must be Wednesday. She's wearing her Wednesday tie.)And Abby, who poses as management, doesn't do anything other than go back and forth between her desk and the kitchen, muttering about how she's the only one with thumbs who ...

I am writing this entirely submerged under a big pile of blankets. No part of me is sticking out.
A few minutes ago, I heard Fey jump onto the bed. I lifted up the blankets, wondering if she would poke her head in and then rapidly pull it out, finding some other place to be. She didn’t. She went straight under the covers. Then she went over the lowest blanket and under the rest, down near my belly. I felt her paws scrabbling around while she turned around several times. Then she finally curled up, and is still lying there, one blanket separating her from me.
I remember being the size of maybe two or three cats, and the way blankets turned into an interesting series of caves. But now I am much less maneuverable, and much taller. But it’s still nice to be burrowed under blanket...

Still taking awhile to write the cat posts, so more cat photos are happening:
The first one is a photograph of Fey sitting on top of her PetPocket, which is on top of the couch. She sits on that thing all the time, when she’s not taking rides in it.

Here is a blurry photo of her curled up in an interesting shape on the bed:

Here the photo is in better focus, but is cut off in the middle of her eyes. Her tongue, though, is sticking out and curled up to one side, in the middle of a wash apparently:

Here you can see part of her face, and part of my face, with the mattress taking up most of the photo:

The following three photos are of her leaning her head against the mattress, from three different angles:

Here she is snuggled against me my face, seen from above. Having a shaved he...

A recent article in the New York Times briefly discusses the utility of cats, and asserts that their lack of usefulness is attributed to the theory that in contrast to other domesticated animals, the cats have domesticated humans, and generally do not let the humans determine their breeding.
Compared to sheepdogs, cats are generally less useful. [...] (Source: Andrea's Buzzing About:)

Kittens are the cutest things on the planet, there’s no doubt. I could watch them for hours. There are times when their kittenish antics make me laugh out loud. The kittens’ mothers are getting a little tired of their offspring though. They want to be let out of their room to roam the house, and it’s harder to get them to go back in there than it was a couple of days ago.
I’d like to encourage those seeking companion animals to look for a local animal rescue group from which to adopt. They usually vet the animals and make sure they’re suitable for a particular situation. In my case, I now know that the mother cats are completely accepting of other cats and dogs, and are not at all aggressive. They like children, too. None of the cats flinched when I tu...

It’s not all purrs and frolicking here. Not for me, anyway. I knew it wouln’t be easy taking care of 7 kittens and their 2 mothers, but I wasn’t prepared for the smell! In no time flat, the room in which I’m keeping the cats has taken on a pretty icky odor. I’m off work tomorrow, so I’ll spend some time cleaning up in there. I’m sure I’ll discover some hidden surprises.
The cats have begun to hang out right by the door, so when I open it to go in to feed, scoop or play, they try to escape. The 2 mothers are the first to slip past. The kittens are easier to herd back into the room because they’re still a little afraid of me. A few have gotten out, and presents a challenge. They head straight for any piece of furniture or appli...

Peeps
The Animal Advocates of Moore County (AAMC) did a huge favor for me. In February, a cat started hanging around my house. It was pretty cold, and I felt bad for her. I started feeding her and tried to coax her into the house. I finally tricked her into coming into the house on her own. I called AAMC to see if they knew of anyone who was missing their cat. She was extremely sweet and a beautiful cat. Someone came to get her, and she was taken to a vet to be checked over. She was such a great cat that I decided to keep her.
About a month after her arrival, Peeps developed paralysis in her back legs. I took her to a few vets to see what could be done for her. They had me convinced that she’d never recover and we’d eventually have to have her euthanized. It was h...

From the New York Times, an article that made my day: Excess Pounds, But Not Too Many, May Lead to Longer Life. The report, published online last week in the journal Obesity, found that overall, people who were overweight but not obese — defined as a body mass index of 25 to 29.9 — were actually less likely to die than people of normal weight, defined as a B.M.I. of 18.5 to 24.9.By contrast, people who were underweight, with a B.M.I. under 18.5, were more likely to die than those of average weight. Their risk of dying was 73 percent higher than that of normal weight people, while the risk of dying for those who were overweight was 17 percent lower than for people of normal weight. The finding adds to a simmering scientific controversy over the optimal weight for adults. In 2007, scientis...

I have been experiencing some wonky numbers lately. For me, the best solution to that problem is to do a little basal testing. Easy in theory - tough in practice. According to Pumping Insulin, and accurate basal test needs to start at least 5 hours after your last bolus and at least 3 hours after your last carb intake. Your starting blood glucose should also be in a good range (they... (Source: Diabetes Daily)

Today I have the great pleasure of interviewing a hero of mine, the brilliant mind behind PsychCentral.com, the Internet’s largest and oldest mental health network … Dr. John Grohol. John is the CEO and founder of Psych Central and has been writing about mental health and psychology issues online since 1992. He lives with his wife and six cats north of Boston.

I wanted tot interview him about therapy, since many of his blog posts deal with the relationship between therapist and patient, and I don’t think anyone else writes about it as candidly and intelligently as John.

Question: In your very popular post “The 12 Most Annoying Bad Habits of Therapists,” you mention some red flags to watch out for. For folks who are currently shopping for the right shrink, ...

It was cured by MPs' expenses. And a motley crew I daresay these MPs all are, but add up the total amount philandered by our flexible friends in the House of Commons and it comes to less than the pension taken by Sir Fred Goodwin. And he was only one of the many bankers and city fat cats who had been ripping off our pension funds for years and who finally, ably assisted by Gordon Brown, brought our economy to it's knees by a level of greed that makes MPs look like Mother Teresa. But no one seems bothered. As Dizzy pointed out in his "quote of the day"Robert Mugabe starves his population to death. Nothing. The Janjawid commit genoc...

Our cat, Toast, has an uneasy place in our household. She’s not that nice. She’s somewhat aloof (except at mealtime) - but she needed a home, and we needed a cat, and she found us, so that’s that.

We all have different opinions. Jeff and I aren’t that enthusiastic about Toast mostly because of some incidents where she’s peed on our bed. Ned really likes her and carries her around and brushes her and gives her treats. Alex ignores her most of the time. Now and then when we first got her (if you can call allowing a cat who walked through your front door to stay “got her”) he’d reach out and push her. This was possibly, according to one of his therapists, a way of amusing himself by making her move. “He can make her go, almost like a toy,...

If you’ve have the misfortune of tripping over the cat or dog lately, you are not alone. Seems that these ‘four-legged tripwires’ are the cause of over 86,000 visits to the emergency room each year. That’s 240 people a day being treated for pet-related injuries.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report found that while cats are involved in some of the fall, the main culprit is man’s best friend, the dog. Seems that nearly 88% of all injuries were dog-related and females sustained injuries twice as often as males.
No mention, though, of how the pets fared in each of these accidents… (Source: Healthbolt)

I am grateful to an angry NHS BLOG DOCTOR reader who has pointed me towards the answer. You can find it on the GMC website under the title Why work for the GMC? Lots of reasons it would seem. Huge salaries and an indexed linked final salary pension. Index linked not just to the cost of living, but to GMC salaries. Wow! Holding a baby is good camouflage
for rocking while standing or sitting.
Cats are less useful.

Feeling stressed out? New research suggests the benefit of getting a pet for college students:

Students who chose to live with at least one dog, one cat, or a combination of the two were less likely to report feeling lonely and depressed; something they directly attributed to their beloved pet.

While previous research has shown that pets help many specific populations (such as people with a chronic illness, senior citizens, and people who live alone), this is the first study to show this effect is also present in young adults.
Freshmen and sophomores, especially, are at risk for loneliness and stress, as they are just establishing their college social network. And while online social networks help the transition for many, face-to-face friends are often just as important to help a per...

Every or every other Christmas, I search the Earth high and low for a holiday sweater that captures the essence of the spirited season.
In the past, I've gone with the traditionally gaudy sweater vest, but this year, I took a risk and opted to go with sleeves. Hope you approve of this year's selection, and that you are having a safe and happy holiday season!

Positively Yours,

It’s something we don’t talk about often here, but our pets can get diabetes just like us. As someone that gives myself multiple shots a day, I can’t imagine having to do that with my dog as well. But it does happen. As this article states, many pet owners are diabetics themselves and understand about the disease when it comes to treating their pet.
I think I would probably have much more sympathy for a dog that has diabetes now that I’m diabetic too, wouldn’t you?
The same article says, “If left untreated (diabetes) can cause our four-legged friends to lose weight, vomit, become weak and lethargic, or even go b...

She spends a lot of time pouncing on and batting around her toy mice, in a way that suggests some inner ferocity. But her record on watching cockroaches with interest rather than hitting them, and her failure to show any evidence of actual mouse-catching, left me a little skeptical. I've come to love the HC for other reasons.Recently, I was coming to bed and saw that the HC had a mouse in front of her, and was looking up at me expectantly, as she sometimes does when she wants me to play with...

Ministers face accusations of allowing the budget for senior NHS managers to almost treble in the past three years, from £1.2m to over £3.4m.David Nicholson, who became NHS chief executive in 2006, earned the equivalent of between £195,000 and £200,000 in that financial year. His salary rose to £215,000 to £220,000 in 2007-08 – a rise of between 7.5 per cent and 12.8 per cent. What did I actually do? Well, I went to get the drug test, the place was inexplicably closed, despite their posted hours of 8am-12pm. I bought some groceries, I went back to see if drug test place had opened (still closed), and I went home and napped. Woke up, went to the bagel shop for a sandwich for lunch, came home, watched bad tv, took a nap while cuddling with the kitties, got up (intending to go for a jog), watched m...

Today Katherine Hilker from the Cincinnati Zoo’s cat ambassador program invited up over to the Mast farm, where they were going to run a pair of the beasts; to exercise them properly. They were going to run them three times with us lucky ones behind fences that they shouldn’t want to jump, much. They don’t have retractable claws like other cats do, but the forefeet of dogs.
These two brothers are together all the time and today they got to run together: Chance and Bravo.
I got lots of excellent pictures, and I think I got some proper ones.
Mostly the whole collection is here. However, for the fortunate few, here’s a taste.
Bravo is ahead of his brother. (Source: white pebble)

Apropos of the second-to-last blog entry, I have been seriously delving into Natsume Soseki’s I Am a Cat. As you might guess somewhat from the title, Our Hero is a nameless cat, who lives in the house of a teacher and his family. He (the cat) makes wonderfully sly observations on the humans surrounding him.
Now I want more Soseki. What goes on the reading list next: Kokoro. (Source: white pebble)

This study suggested that pet ownership amongst many older people is more of a burden than a benefit.
What about for younger folks? In a 2006 survey of 2,291 adults in the U.S., researchers found that unmarried women who live with a pet have the fewest depressive symptoms, and unmarried men who live with a pet have the most (Tower et al., 2006). The researchers concluded, “single women benefit from pet companionship, whereas single men may be burdened by it.”
A dissertation published in 2004 by Amanda Smith examined 38 married couples, half of which who owned dogs and half who did not. She found no significant differences between the two groups on marital communication, stress levels, constructive communications, marital satisfaction, or consideration of divorce. In other wo...

So... there's this running joke in my family about broken toes (which I've had several) and toe trucks. Somehow this joke annoyed me until I was about 20, and then it made me laugh and laugh. So, I have this cat, see (pictured).... He's really quite large. Even if he weren't a fat cat (which he is, but he's not bizarrely fat.. his belly doesn't touch the ground or anything), he'd be huge. As it is, he weighs 30lbs, which I think makes him as large as some medium size dogs (when I take him outside, he wears a medium size dog harness). So, I went off to a picnic thing today and I come back, and he's sleeping. Not all that unusual, he does that a lot. He came out to get his food when I fed the kitties today. Now he's sleeping /sulking in my office. Most of the afternoon. I tried to get him to g...

Today, she has produced a tendentiously headlined concatenation of half truths, misrepresentations and down right lies about GPs.Don't be fooled: this doctors' protest is all about profits, not patientsGPs are fighting the new polyclinics for the same reason they refused to join the NHS 60 years ago: to protect their business (Polly Toynbee)Let’s take a rational look at Polly’s article. The British Medical Association has declared war on the government.
I've been on vacation now since 7:15am Monday morning. I have a total of 3 weeks of vacation time left to take (because I haven't taken any vacation (ok, I've taken 3 of 21 days of vacation, so now I'm taking 15, and I think I'll probably loose 3 days), and all of my vacation goes *poof* and resets in July, it doesn't accumulate between academic years). I've completed the list of tangible things I was supposed to do while on the vacation (although I probably need to mow the lawn one more time before I go back to work). My goals:Hang out with the familyReconnect with some old friends from residencySleep... sleep and more sleep. I've added my 4th alarm clock to the rotation (thinking that the reason I can't get up in the am is that I'm too used to my alarm clock), and someone suggested that p...

Litter Box = Healthy Heart. Who Knew?

Great news for kitty lovers: Turns out your feline friends do more than keep your toes warm at night - they help keep your heart healthy, too.
A recent study from the University of Minnesota found that owning a cat can slash your risk of dying from a heart attack by up to 40 percent. Evidently, having kitty around can help soothe away the harmful effects of stress and anxiety. Suddenly, dealing with the litter box doesn’t seem quite so vexing, now does it?
Of course, it’s best to keep exercising and eating right, but if it’s been one of “those days”, spend some extra time with your furry pal and make your heart (and your pet) happy.

They did so, of course, solely so I could be out blogging early and bright, just like I am now. Doling out cat food to 2 separate dishes had nothing to do with it.
This is also the beginning of windows-open weather here in Cincinnati. I now have fresh air, birdsong, and load upon load of oak pollen wafting in to me here at the keyboard. Far more birdsong than I can identify at a casual listen. Enough oak pollen to leave a dusty film over everything.
Cats now back asleep.

The Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA) blinkered hypcrisy is an ever increasing source of annoyance. The TPA has but one bland belief. Taxes are too high, and should be reduced. In their prominently displayed mission statement the TPA says:Taxpayers' Alliance Mission StatementWe will oppose all tax risesThat is it. No exemptions. No explanation. No penumbra. No analysis other than that in which the conclusions have been pre-defined. Tax is a bad thing. Surprising they have not joined up with the Libertarian Party amongst whose avowed aims is the abolition of income tax. Come to think of it, maybe they have.My friend Wat Tyler has just posted an article purporting to expose the scandal of unaccountably high salaries in local government. Sadly, and unusually for him, the post is Daily Mail style TP...

Conflicts between predators like cougars and coyotes and human companions like pets and small children are becoming more common as people move into areas that used to be wildlife habitat.

The Seattle Times has a great story this morning about biologists in Washington who are studying cougars to learn if cougars and people can coexist. The biologists think most of the trouble might be caused by teenage male cougars who move in to the territory when the older, smarter males get killed.

There's also a cool video (Source: Discovering Biology in a Digital World)

An irritating rant from the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA) drops into my emailbox. Now, do not get me wrong. The increase in taxation over the last ten years has been outrageous. Gordon Brown’s stealth taxation has bordered on fraudulent. When I was a child, it was only rock stars, fund managers and stockbrokers who paid top rate tax. Gordon Brown consistently refused to index the tax bands, so that now we have police sergeants and senior nurses paying it. Crazy. Something needs to be done about that. The TPA go to the other extreme. Their mission statement is both simple and simplistic. Reduce taxation. At all costs. At any cost. Does not matter who suffers.Today, the TPA is having a go at people who work in the NHS and, guess what, in particular at GPs.There are almost 8,500 retired NHS emp...

For all of the money, energy and focus that has gone into gene studies on schizophrenia, two findings this week call into question much of that effort.
The first one has been widely reported yesterday, Parasite May Lead to Schizophrenia. The parasite? Good ‘ole toxoplasma gondii, a common organism carried by carried by cats and farm animals. In most cases, the parasite is harmless (except for pregnant women, who have long been taught to avoid handling cat litter when pregnant).
But in the latest study, researchers found that 7 percent of people with schizophrenia had this parasite, compared to only 5 percent in people who were not diagnosed with schizophrenia. That puts someone who has this parasite at a 24% increased risk of also getting schizophrenia.
The second study, not yet ...

This post brought to you in part by Carribou Coffee, since I'll be without power through the night. The cats now have another job... keeping my bed warm.OK, so the cats are always asking why I don't blog about them more. They are, they say, the most interesting thing going on in my life at any one time. So, I thought I'd show some pictures of the kitties and introduce you all to them. Essentially both of them came into my life because I'm a bit of a sucker for a sad story. However, I've been very glad to have them. :)This is Ron. He's a domestic short-haired tabby. Neutered, indoor only (except when he escapes, which he only tries in the summer). Quite a hunter, when I lived in an apartment with a mouse problem, he would capture mice on a regular basis. The only thing is, since he was an ...

Watch the black cat sit for hours on the tiny bridge outside my den, and you’ll see him guard my creek … much like a sentient guards royals. Have you ever wondered what keeps cats curious? If curiosity comes with cows, though, it’s far less clear. How do I know? A respected business leader friend of mine announced to a group of us over dinner one night. “I’ve always wanted to see what makes cows tick … so I’m hanging out with a herd of 'em for one day … to see how they think. In Len’s words … “Not much.” Hm...

A compensatory pause is a pause after a premature ventricular contraction (PVC or extra heart beat) while the heart muscle "rests" and resets itself to resume it's usual rhythm. This weekend has been my compensatory pause. I cleaned my apartment. I will get my laundry done. I watched some TV, played Nintendo Wii, and even did a little bit of work (helped to write part of a grant). I also studied for a test, went grocery shopping, went to Target (I love Target, but why can't I ever get out of there without spending an hour of my life and $100? It doesn't matter if I just pop in for toothpaste, I will buy $100 of stuff). I'm going to cook some real food (rosemary roasted turkey breast, and either cous cous or potatoes, and some sort of veg (considering asparagus)). I started jogging again, r...

They disperse in three different directions but I remain calm because no-one can actually escape. One single entrance, that is also the sole exit, is balm to a woman such as myself.I allow them to let off puffs of steam. their excitement whirs a while. After about twenty minutes, they have expended enough energy to risk entering one of the smaller enclosures. We battle with unco-operative doors. I remind them all about the need to sanitize their hands between each cat stroking session. They are perfectly happy to submit to the hand washing in order to maintain the health of the cats and kittens. The greater good. A man enters the same enclosure.
Filed under: Research, Smoking, Daily news, Thought for the DayYou should think about protecting your pets from secondhand smoke. According to researchers at Oklahoma State University, secondhand smoke has been determined cancer-causing for household pets, such as dogs, cats, and birds"There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets," says Dr. Carolynn MacAllister, an Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service veterinarian. "Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs, as well as lung cancer in birds."The news about smoking just keeps getting worse and worse. When we will get the hint?

The NICHD (National Institutes of Child Health and Development) conference in Aspen was amazing. Aside from the fact that I caught the most uncomfortable cold I've ever had (now resolving, but I have minutes long coughing fits now and ended up in the Emergency Dept feeling really short of breath (normal chest x-ray, normal O2 sat)-- nothing really wrong except this post viral crud), it was one of the better conferences I've been to.The conference brought together fellows in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and Neonatology. The talks were great. They covered everything from grant writing, to what kind of grants are out there, to balancing life and work (although they did not have any adequate suggestions, really. They said to take a lot of your work home ...

Since various people have been asking, what’s been going on is:
1. Visitor was here for 8 days, nearly all waking hours spent with her
2. Too many physical therapy appointments (and plenty of associated pain afterwards as far as I can tell)
3. Too many urgent-care appointments, both for me and a neighbor (for different reasons)
4. Too many meetings
5. Still trying to work on the cat video

Monday my mom called, frantic, saying "get over here and deal with your father."He couldn't find the bathroom, couldn't ask for it, and pooped himself. Fine, no reason to make a big deal, right? But he refused to remove his soiled clothes or take a shower. My poor husband was in the bathroom with this smelly wreck of a man for a good half hour. He started off asking nicely and then progressed to threats (I will cut your clothes off with scissors) and yelling (take off your clothes! Get in the shower!). I just sat there in the living room like a useless lump, knowing that going in there would make things worse --remember how he freaked out when he peed himself a few weeks ago and I was there?I can't say how much it sucks--you've heard it all, and if you're in this situation, you already kno...

I was just reminded of one pretty solid indicator that the guy who works for me in the afternoon actually sees me as a real person.
Whenever he leaves, he says really casually, “See you guys later.” Always has, since his first day here. Just did it again about five minutes ago.
He means me, the dog, and the cat. He addresses it to all of us. He realizes that when he’s in my apartment, there’s four sentient creatures in the room including himself.
There was a staff person I knew in California who was the same way. She talked to me and to my cat, neither of us with baby talk, as if we were actual people. She was training to be a speech pathologist, and I think she’ll make a good one.

Cats Are a Ubiquitous Source of Irritation for People with Allergies I have previously made my position on cats very clear: You're Not Free of Cats Just Because You Don't Own One. I will grudgingly admit that the report needs to be verified but it merely confirms me in my prejudice that cats are a force for evil, irritation, anti-histamine and air-freshener sales. It seems that allergen avoidance advice that has concentrated on avoiding house dust mite might have neglected the ubiquitous nature of cat allergens which may be a more relevant trigger, even in the absence of an apparent allergy. Cats may trigger an asthmatic airway response even in people who are not specifically allergic to cat dander.Cat allergen exposure at moderate levels may be harmful to all atopic adults...The clinical ...

[translation = when ‘speaking’ is not your first language]Why do they do that? It is so annoying! You lean down to refill their bowls with food or water and they nudge you, spill everything everywhere, those darned cats. Why can’t they just hold back? It’s not as if they’re helping at all. It’s the same thing several times a day. Why can’t they keep their furry little heads to themselves? What is the point? I need to duct tape their tails to the floor at a discrete distance until the task is completed.I wish I understood this behaviour. I wish they could tell me why they do it? Why can’t I chat to a cat? There again, there is not a lot of chat around here. Speech delays mean that whilst there are now words, sentences, ‘chat’ isn’t high on their priority list. That’...

"Any animal’s minute-by-minute life is a constant process—or actually, a system of many interlocked processes. All of us animals are constantly kept alive by our systems of life." Video: the Hemodynamic Cat takes a nap.“This process must have changed you,” my friend R said, as we were talking about my upcoming graduation from medical school. “But how did it change you?”I’ve been thinking about that ever since, and I’ll be thinking about it more—this surely won’t be the last that I write about it.* * *Life and death changed around me even in pre-medical biology classes, but much more acutely as a medical student. Walking along a crowded beach, or out in nature, or even sometimes in the city, I much more frequently and knowledgeably remind myself of the physiology of the ...

YouTube, aka, HundredsofThousandsOfMoviesOfPeoplesCats.com, has this video which more or less illustrates the content of my conversations with the Hemodynamic Cat, except this guy has two.Ms Hemodynamics is off on vacation with her mom, so I am staying in the Hemodynamics HQ with the Hemodynamic Cat. The Hemodynamic Cat is a Siamese cat, and like many others who share her ancestry, she has a strong personality. She also seems to have strong opinions which she expresses quite forcefully with sometimes unstoppable loud meowing. The meow-screeds are sometimes especially unrelenting when Ms Hemodynamics is away. She was Ms Hemodynamics' cat before I came into the picture, and initially waged an incredibly stealthy and devastating terrorist campaign against me to try to stop me from dislodging ...

My cats and my diabetes supplies are usually found in some odd places in my apartment - sometimes together. :) P.S. Lie and lay are both verbs, but the difference is that lay is a transitive verb meaning “to put down”; it requires a direct object. Lie is an intransitive verb meaning “to recline”; it takes a subject but not a direct object. Each verb has its own conjugated forms. (Source: Sara in West Palm)

I just received this, and I couldn't even read all of it, it was so horrible. You may not be able to either, but I think more people should know about this, mostly because of the inhumanity. The methods used by these companies should make your heart break, and hopefully inspire change in such a deplorable industry. Please read. Slaughter house: China butchers cats and dogs to satisfy the west's hunger>for fur>>>>It sounds too grotesque for words. But pelts from slaughtered cats and dogs>are being passed off as 'ethical' fur. Last week, the US fashion industry>cracked down on dubious ladelling, not good news for British shoppers as>fashion insiders predict a flood of rejects from the US>>The short video would have made even the most hardened fur-lover recoil.
Not much to say - still kinda in a funk. Taken a few pictures lately that I thought you might enjoy. I bought a new hair straightener, and this was the warning I found inside. Seriously, what was the circumstance that inspired that tidbit? :) The bummer about being on a diet is that this has been in my kitchen since Christmas, when I took a friend to the airport for her flight to Switzerland and she brought me back this as a thanks.
A Moral Dilemma?

I have two cats that love to follow me around my apartment (right now one of them is lying next to me as I type). They also love drinking water out of the toilet even when their water dish is completely full.I was brushing my teeth on Saturday when I heard a funny noise. Seems that Rose had fallen into the toilet back feet first... and she was stuck. I think her feet had gotten stuck in the 'hole'. She did not meow, she did not flail, she just looked up at me with this pitiful face. Here is where the moral dilemma begins. The thought ran across my mind, do I get the camera and take a picture or video of her or do I save her right away?I chose to rescue her, but now I am wondering if I made the wrong decision. George probably would have even featured me next Tuesday. Gratuitous cat pictures ...
