Even though it may seem like they won’t, things get better. And there are things that you can do—sometimes as simple as taking a walk or spending time with your girlfriends. Take vitamins. Never underestimate how important it is to have sleep and good nutrition. When you have those basic things, your outlook is a whole lot better.

The truth is, it’s a lot of sacrifice. It’s more about your mental strength than physical strength. You have to push yourself. It doesn’t matter what trainer you have. And it doesn’t matter what program you’re on. You have to be healthy and make the right choices.

I have experienced depression, Many people have. Mine was caused by a few things. I felt a lot of stress from all these different areas […] I’m much happier, more sure, more definite. Who you are at 25 and who you are at 29 is a very different thing. For me it feels like a 20-year age gap. You live, you learn and you come through the drama to a more easy, relaxed perspective.

NFL star Brandon Marshall has been making headlines this week after announcing that he has borderline personality disorder. The 27-year-old wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, who received his diagnosis this past spring, told a press conference Sunday that he wants to be the ‘face’ of BPD.
It’s about time somebody is. While depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder are well on their way to being better understood and even semi-accepted by the general public, BPD remains little-known and even less understood. For a long time, psychiatrists were even reluctant to take on BPD patients, and more reluctant to hand out the diagnosis (or at least uninformed enough about the disease not to recognize it). So…just what is BPD?
It’s estimated that 2% of American adults ...

Betty Ford, the former First Lady of the United States died Friday at the age of 93. Dr. William Van Ornum gives this succinct summary of her life in a tribute on the website of the American Mental Health Foundation (AMHF):
Mrs. Ford was born in Chicago, grew up in modest circumstances, became a dancer, and married Mr. Ford shortly after he returned from the Navy in World War II. She thought she was signing up for a life with a mid-western lawyer; instead he chose politics and she was thrust into the role of a political wife, all the while raising 4 children and trying to keep her own interests as well.
Political life became difficult for her and she felt an emptiness inside from which she sought solace in alcohol and prescription pills. She was open about her addiction at a time when othe...

You probably know him best as “Mr. Big,” but Chris Noth is putting his star power behind something other than Carrie Bradshaw these days in a new Diabetes Awareness campaign. The actor, who’s starred in Law & Order and The Good Wife, in addition to Sex and The City, told Huffington Post that “[diabetes] is a disease that’s way too much under the radar. We’re trying to get ahead of the game with people; … encouraging [them] to call [their] doctors and get a blood test.”
According to recent CDC statistics, 25.8 million Americans, or just over eight percent of the population, is living with diabetes, which can be a life-threatening disease. If caught early, however, complications can be prevented or delayed, and all it takes to screen for diabetes is a simp...

A few weekends ago, I was intrigued to see this story in the New York Post: “The ultimate star perk is forbidding eye contact.” According to the Smoking Gun, singer Katy Perry’s contract covering her driver provides that the driver isn’t supposed to “stair” (sic) at her in the rear-view mirror.
The piece notes that there have been many similar rumors over the years — that people were prohibited from making eye contact with Luke Perry, Tori Spelling, Sylvester Stallone, and others.
When I read this story, I had a huge rush of intellectual pleasure. Because I think I’ve figured this out! Darshan.

Years ago, when I was doing the research for my first book, Power Money Fame Sex: A User’s Guide, I was struck by how often celebrities made rules about eye contac...

Assay: Recently, I posted a quotation from Virginia Woolf for my weekly quotation. I often quote from Woolf, because she’s one of my very favorite writers.
And, as has happened before, I got a few comments from readers saying, in effect, “Why are you quoting Virginia Woolf about happiness? She committed suicide — what can she know about happiness?”
This response always surprises me, for a few reasons. First, Woolf aside, there’s a big difference between writers’ works and what they personally experience and how they behave in their own lives. Tolstoy, for example. I love Tolstoy’s fiction, and find it elevating and very illuminating on the subject of happiness, but I can’t bear to read about the actual Leo Tolstoy, who was a dreadful person.

Nevertheless, suffering “...

Colleague and psychologist Dr. Frank Farley has an interesting op-ed over at the LA Times the other day about some of the underlying psychological motivations that may explain why politicians stray from their marriages.
In the article, Dr. Farley refers to the “Type T Personality” — the T stands for Thrill. He makes the argument that we elect the politicians we do because we’re drawn to their bold ideas, their intensity, their charisma. But those same qualities that may make them a good politician (we don’t really know, because there hasn’t been a lot of research done in this area yet), also may put them at greater risk for engaging in unethical relationship behavior, such as cheating on their spouse.
Politicians, like Hollywood celebrities, are also con...

There will be no rapture on Saturday, May 21st.
And I can’t wait to see how Harold Camping reacts on Sunday when he’s still alive, on this Earth, and in this human body.
That said, let’s talk about a method of persuasion called “social proof”. In “Influence: the Psychology of Persuasion”, Dr. Robert Cialdini describes social proof as follows:
“In general, when we are unsure of ourselves, when the situation is unclear or ambiguous, when uncertainty reigns, we are most likely to look to and accept the actions of others as correct” (p. 129).
We’re familiar with this concept. Should I laugh at this joke? Better wait and see if anyone else laughs first. Should I join a sorority? Better wait and see if one of my friends joins first. Sh...

We all know the drill. Some celebrity watches a video of animals being mistreated on farms.

This produces an emotional response and a vow to never eat meat again, but because they are famous, this proclamation is usually made from some national talk show. They appeal to their adoring fans to join in the cause.

What happens when the celebrity falls off the vegan wagon?Continue reading... (Source: Diet Blog)

Psychology has spilled over into pop culture in many ways throughout the years.
For instance, in 1911, one psychologist saved Coca-Cola by conducting rigorous studies into caffeine’s effects on cognition and sensory and motor abilities.
In 1929, another inspired his nephew’s successful public relations campaigns, which linked smoking cigarettes with female empowerment, if you can believe it.
Since 1895, other psychologists were directly involved in advertising, using surveys and other new ploys to get us to buy their products. (You didn’t need toothpaste to clean your teeth; you needed it to make you sexier.)
One psychologist even changed the comic book world and influenced an entire movement (that would be the feminist movement).
In the early 1940s, Harvard psychologist William ...

Dear readers, I owe you all an apology. I was wrong in my post about Catherine Zeta Jones’s diagnosis of bipolar II to compare bipolar II to Diet Coke. It was flip, inappropriate, and a lame attempt at humor. I hereby admit that I was wrong. So there is no need to further bash me.
I was wrong because it suggests that bipolar II is not as serious, not as painful, not as debilitating as bipolar I. But, as a person diagnosed with bipolar II myself, I certainly know that isn’t the case. I realize that the depressive cycle for someone with bipolar II can actually be more severe than the depressive cycles of folks with bipolar I. And sometimes the depression can be psychotic.
I was there myself, although I’m not sure if it was the illness that made me psychotic or the drug cocktail of abo...

It’s safe to say that I’m obsessed with the sounds of other people’s voices, and the ability that those voices have to cast a much-welcomed meditative spell over me. Plus, listening to a good, calming voice is an instant stress-reliever. Remember Kind Coma: Alec Baldwin, Deepak Chopra, and 3 Other Soothing Voices to Relax Your Mind, Body, and Spirit? Well, today we’re back with another edition that solely focuses on the dulcet tones of five yoga instructor pipes. It’s worth noting that I don’t actually use these instructional yoga videos as part of my practice. (I go to various yoga studios for that.) For me, these audio/video displays are purely instruments of mini-meditation sessions. And why buy the DVD when you can get the asana for free? I like to c...

A genius comedian named Carol Burnett used to say that tragedy + time = comedy. And in a lot of cases that’s definitely true. There are exceptions, however: Slavery, the Holocaust, the Columbine shootings, the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster, the Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Katrina, 9/11, and last year’s earthquake in Haiti, just to name a few. But there’s also another sacred rule of comedy to abide by: Too soon. And earlier this week, Gilbert Gottfried seriously violated that unwritten law in the unhealthiest way possible.
A few days ago, the comedian was canned by the Aflac insurance company (he’s the distinctive voice of that annoying duck on TV and radio) for Tweeting off-color and insensitive jokes about the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. (Exact...

It’s Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in the United States.
There are television adverts for the National MS Society, billboards, Facebook pages are bubbling with chat, and people are wearing orange and taking part in awareness activities across the country. I’ve decided to try to post a little something every day this week, starting out year six at a sprint!
Today, I’m focusing on MS =. The National MS Society has created this page so that all of us who live with MS — patients, families, friends, co-workers, etc — can go there and type a headline (no more than 60 characters) explaining what MS equals to them.
I’ve been reading many of them, and no one emotion is left out of my reaction. I wrote “MS=An end to old dreams…but living new dreams built on hope” ...

On a night when my multiple sclerosis was quiet and actually allowing for a good night’s sleep, I was awakened just after 5:00 am by a text message from my father in Florida. While he knows we live a couple of hundred feet above sea level, we aren’t far from the sea on the Pacific Northwest coast of the United States.
News of the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan was racing around the news wires and internet and he, being fatherly and all, wanted to make sure our pack was safe.
We are.
As I searched the internet and surfed television channels I came across other alarming news… The first love of an entire generation of American boys, Annette Funicello (of Mickey Mouse Club and surf movie fame), was rushed to the hospital this morning as a fire engulfed her Souther...

Dear Charlie Sheen:
We read an excerpt from your new exclusive interview with Life&Style magazine in which you make the following claims: “I’m really starting to lose my mind,” and “I’m ready to call anyone to help.”

To prove it, we’d like to offer you some health advice based on the stuff you spouted in that Life&Style article. Now, we’re not medical doctors or psychiatrists or bitchin’ rock stars, but you don’t seem to hold the former two in very high regard anyway, so this relationship could work out nicely for both of us.
In one of the myriad interviews he gave over the last week, Charlie Sheen said clearly that he hates AA.
A lot of people have trouble with Alcoholics Anonymous. AA is full of people and people can be messy and flawed.
The human train wreck formally known as Charlie Sheen is a common sight in the AA meeting halls. The only difference between Mr. Sheen and other self-absorbed, delusional, frantic addicts is the size of the audience to which they rant. These people do not last long in AA. They mock the Fellowship and the 12 Steps (PDF) as too religious or simplistic. AA is beneath them.
Here are a few possible reasons why Charlie Sheen might hate AA so much.

Reasons Why Charlie Sheen May Hate AA

He would need to embrace Humility.

This article is about why.

Bottling it Up
At the same time as being interested in other people’s sadness, we are keen to hide our own. Psychologists regularly find that people avoid telling others when they’re sad, down or depressed, but will shout their happiness from the rooftops.
The upshot is that people generally show their positive emotions in public while hiding their negative emotions, no matter how they really feel inside.
We know this is true because various studies have asked participants to report their emotions every hour or so. What they find is that we tend to experience and display more positive emotions in public and more negative emotions in private.
All this is important because the human mind is a relative instrument. We judge our own happiness with refer...

The overpaid/underachieving Yankees may have some hope in actually cashing in on their exorbitant payroll with newly-svelte hurler CC Sabathia. His weight loss secret? Eschewing sugar-coated razor blades Cap n' Crunch.

As of last season, Sabathia was the biggest player in the majors at an imposing 6'7" and 309 lbs. When Sabathia takes the mound this spring, however, he will have less strain on his right knee (where he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus), more stamina, and less cuts on the roof of his mouth.5 Comments | Continue reading... Turns out, giggling is actually good for you – and simpler than strapping on Pilates paraphernalia, and sillier, perhaps, than even Zumba. Studies show laughter, which lowers the heart rate, whittles the waistline, and gives the lungs a hearty workout, may be even healthier for the body than today’s trendiest forms of exercise.
Enrollment is surging at improv classes and circus schools, and a growing number of Americans are also joining laughter clubs, where they learn to chuckle their hellos and goodbyes, mime their way through complicated jokes, and invent songs made of “ho-ho-ho” and ‘ha-ha-ha’ sounds.
Why all this clowning around? Health experts say it’s not just for kicks. Recent research shows that laughter comes with a whole host of health benefits. ...

Join me and my 378 staffers and go vegan for one week, she declares from her Chicago throne. Oprah was inspired to go vegan after reading Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World by Kathy Freston, which is a brand new book promoting a vegan diet.5 Comments | Continue reading... The "Black Swan" diet has recently arisen as a result of the new movie "The Black Swan" starring Natalie Portman, who was just nominated for best actress by the Academy for her role.

Already slender Portman lost 20 pounds for her role as a ballerina by starving herself and intense training.2 Comments | Continue reading... (Source: Diet Blog)

Actress Kristin Davis recently appeared on The Late Show With Craig Ferguson to talk about a new show she’s developing for NBC, based on The Happiness Project, a memoir written by Gretchen Rubin. Beyond our happiness (no pun intended) that Davis is finally done working on the Sex and the City franchise (we may have gotten into the show, but those awful movies pushed us over the edge), we’re actually excited to see how Rubin’s book translates into a sitcom.
If you’re not familiar with her, Rubin is a bestselling author who decided to take on the subject of what makes humans happy, resulting in a personal memoir about her own experiences and experiments in improving her mindset, as well as scientific research, philosophical theories, and practical advice on the topic ...

I've accepted the fact that we live in a society which favours blindly following the advice of a celebrity over the science-based, albeit less-sexy, health advice.

The Sense about Science (SAS), a group of evidence-based minds, poked some holes into the practices of certain celebrities.

Here are some of the more dubious practices, according to the group.0 Comments | Continue reading... (Source: Diet Blog)

I’m pleased to introduce Movies and Mental Health with Joseph Burgo, Ph.D. This blog is devoted to looking at films — both recent, contemporary movies and the classics — as an avenue for examining different aspects of the human experience.
“I’m particularly interested in exploring and writing about the nexus between mental health issues and popular culture,” says Dr. Burgo. “From time to time, a book or TV show might also be an appropriate topic for discussion.”
I love movies, and I love delving into the psychological aspects of their characters, because there are just so many darned good stories out there. So I must admit, I’m not only happy to introduce this new blog, but also will be an avid reader of it.

It was recently reported that one in three Americans have been vaccinated for the flu. While that’s on par with the number of seasonal flu vaccinations in the past, many doctors are hoping that the number will increase before the flu season peaks between January and March. But why listen to doctors when there are so many celebrities willing to inform us about the pros and cons of vaccinations? Save yourself the trouble of waiting in a crowded medical clinic or trying to find time in your schedule for a doctor’s appointment. Instead, if you’re not sure what your stance on immunizations is – and don’t limit your opinion to just flu shots – look to these celebrities for guidance:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.
~ John Lennon
On Dec. 8th, 1980, I was in bed listening to the radio when suddenly, in a voice labored by heavy breathing and halting words, the disc jockey broke the news that John Lennon had been shot and killed in front of his New York City apartment building. The news ransacked my brain.
The Beatles weren’t just a rock band; they gave us an identity. Their songs weren’t simply catchy tunes or stray memorable lyrics. The music told us who we were. It pointed us in a whole new direction. The simplicity and ...

Blisstree Editor-in-Chief Christine Egan on the highly controversial subject of “rape fantasies” as portrayed in the media, from her post: When No Means Yes: Top 10 Rape Fantasy Scenes on Film and TV
Post from: BlissTree
Rape is against the law (in most countries, anyway). Still, a fair number of film and TV characters really seem to ask for it a lot. (Or maybe it’s that most film and TV directors are men. Wait a minute…) Obviously, these disturbing scenes exist for a reason, but what? To provoke thought, to promote dialogue, to teach, to titillate? Are these alleged rape “fantasies” supposed to be the character’s, the director’s – or ours? (Source: A Hearty Life)

Long solitary walks, turkey trot races, iPods, iPads, pretending to have swine flu, baking for hours, saying you have to go upstairs to do some “work,” generous amounts of alcohol, pretending to watch football, anti-anxiety meds: All are perfectly valid ways to get through Thanksgiving weekend when you have a house full of challenging relatives and guests who overstay their welcome. (Or perhaps you’re being held hostage at Aunt Polly’s house for the weekend.) Either way, you can combine one or two of these excuses (I highly recommend alcohol) with my gallery of ten classic movies I watch over Thanksgiving to escape all the family melodrama — albeit temporarily. But if you’re unluckly enough to have an annoying relative who plops down next to you on the ...

I guess we shouldn't be too surprised, but the ageless (except for her hands) superstar has announced the opening of her new line of fitness centers - "Hard Candy Fitness" (Seriously?! - better than Sweet and Sticky I suppose?)

It makes sense that someone who keep as fit as Madonna would have an interest in a fitness venture. At 52, Madonna is FIT - and has always taken her health very seriously. Continue reading... (Source: Diet Blog)

“If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane,” sings Jimmy Buffett. “Time spent laughing is time spent with the gods,” says a Japanese proverb.
A sense of humor, for me, is by far the most useful weapon in my depression arsenal. Which is why Eric is panicked when I stop laughing, when my funny bone is split in 43 places.
For two nights in the psych ward, our group therapy session was to watch a comedy act by an actress (I forget her name, sorry … I was on too many sedatives to take notes) who pokes fun at depression and mood disorders, the way I try to do on Beyond Blue. Our psychiatric nurses were well aware of the studies showing that laughter can be a powerful tool for recovery and healing. In between meals and meds, they did their best to evoke a fe...

We like Christina Hendricks. Her figure’s not bad, either. But honestly, we’re glad we’re not her. Having that much constant focus on our measurements would drive us nuts, and make us unbelievably self-conscious. But when your body resembles that of the Mad Men star, it’s bound to turn some heads.
That’s why we’re not totally shocked by the rumor that Ms. Hendricks has started dieting. In our opinion, she doesn’t need to, but that’s her private business. But with everyone talking about how awesomely unique her hips, butt, and boobs are by Hollywood standards (i.e. not size 0), it makes sense that eventually, even the strongest might cave to peer pressure. (Of course, if it’s not a rumor and the diet is her personal choic...

We love Christina Hendricks. And her body. But we’ve got to be honest: We’re glad we aren’t her. Having that much focus on our figure would drive us insane, and make us unbelievably self-conscious. But, yes — when your bod is that rockin’, it’s bound to turn some heads.
That’s why we aren’t totally shocked by the rumor that Christina has started dieting. No, she doesn’t need to. Yes, she looks great as she is. But with everyone talking about how awesomely unique her hips, butt, and boobs are in Hollywood, it’s only human to feel a little nervous.
We suggest a shift of focus from Christina’s curves to her entire person. Last we checked, her acting skills were pretty out of the ordinary as well. Maybe if the medi...

“Daily Mail” columnist Liz Jones is at it again — this time she’s tsk-tsking celeb cads like David Arquette, Jude Law and Tiger Woods for stepping out on their beautiful, powerful partners with — gasp! — waitresses.
Last week, I had the opportunity to report from SAMHSA’s annual Voice Awards in Hollywood and to interview one of the consumer leadership award winners. Frederick Frese, Ph.D. is a psychologist with more than 40 years experience in public mental health care. Until 1995, Frese was Director of Psychology for 15 years at Western Reserve Psychiatric Hospital. Now he is the Coordinator of the Summit County Recovery Project, serving recovering consumers in and around Akron, OH.
Dr. John M. Grohol: So you’ve had a distinguished career, but it all seemed to start with your diagnosis of schizophrenia when you joined the Marines.
Dr. Frederick Frese: Actually, I was in the Marine Corps for about four years when I had the diagnosis and was discharged. Then spent 10 years, in 10 different ...

While at the Voice Awards, I had the opportunity to sit down and chat for a few minutes with the head of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Administrator Pamela Hyde, JD.
Ms. Hyde is an attorney and comes to SAMHSA with more than 30 years experience in management and consulting for public healthcare and human services agencies. She has served as a state mental health director, state human services director, city housing and human services director, as well as CEO of a private non-profit managed behavioral healthcare firm. You can learn more about Ms. Hyde here.
Dr. John Grohol: So I wanted to understand a little bit better how the Voice Awards originated. What was the motivation behind coming up with this novel sort of way of recognizing both consumers ...

It was an honor and a pleasure to attend the 2010 Voice Awards, hosted by SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. SAMHSA is the agency responsible for helping to get the word out about substance abuse and mental health issues, so their focus is much aligned with ours.
This year’s theme was focused on honoring portrayals of men and women who serve in the military but come home to grapple with mental health issues and friends and family who often just don’t understand how to help. It also featured a lifetime achievement award given to Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter for her decades’ long work on helping advance mental health care in the U.S.

According to David Arquette’s call into Howard Stern’s Sirius radio show yesterday, the clown-school alumn claimed that Courteney has told him the seven words no woman or wife should ever have to utter: “I don’t wanna be your mother anymore.” Rich or poor, famous or unknown, successful or struggling, it’s all pretty much downhill from there, as is evidenced by the celeb couple’s recent separation. What other signs mean the beginning of the end?
Have you ever felt like someone’s mother in a relationship that wasn’t with your child? How’d that work out for you? Sound off (anonymously, if you like) below.

You may have read the series on platonic friendships over at Slate that I felt compelled to write about this week. If you haven’t, go do it. I’ll wait.
After reading Juliet Lapidos’ articles about her non-sexual relationship with a guy named Jeff, I’m once again reminded of how lucky we are to be alive now instead of, say, in the 16th century, when bro hangs between men and women were uncommon and dying of the plague was not.
Juliet surveyed around 600 readers in an attempt to divine the mysteries of boy-girl friendship, something she holds very near and dear herself. In the initial post, she quotes platonic nonbelievers from James Joyce to Nora Ephron, and laments, &#8220...

It’s easy to judge women (and men) who opt for plastic surgery or liposuction, just because we think we’d never do it. But we’re still young-ish. How can we be sure we won’t change our minds later on? Of course, there’s no way we want end up looking like the current Courteney Cox or Christa Miller from ABC’s Cougar Town, or Lisa Rinna (what the hell were they thinking?), but maybe we’d just need to find a better plastic surgeon. Or maybe no matter how expert the hands are that hold the scalpel, plastic surgery just never turns out well in the long run. So would you take the risk? Either way, take our anonymous poll:

And if you have had plastic surgery and/or liposuction, tell us about your experience...

Howard Stern, the ubiquitous satellite radio talk-show host, is big proponent of psychotherapy. He has noted how he’s been in psychotherapy three times a week for the past few decades, much like Woody Allen. But what kind of psychotherapy is Howard Stern in? And why does it seem endless?
This type of intensive, long-term psychotherapy is almost always psychoanalysis — a specific type of psychotherapy that focuses on how a person’s unconscious conflicts impact a person’s everyday functioning. People who undergo psychoanalysis almost always meet with their analyst 2 to 3 times a week, every week, for years on end. Howard Stern has said he sees his analyst 3 times a week, but sometimes feels like he would like to cut down to twice a week.

We took off a little time this summer, but our vacays didn’t exactly resemble the exotic escapes of Hollywood films. For one thing, we never managed to get perfectly tousled beach hair. Nor were we swept off our feet by a dashing leading man we met while traveling solo. Allegedly romantic situations occur in almost every movie where a woman steps onto a plane — and somehow, that sex-charged interlude has the power to make or break her vacation. (Conversely, as an audience member on a plane, you could sit through a sad excuse for a film such as The Holiday, and almost have your own vacation ruined before it begins – or at least hurl into your barf bag.) But forget history, landscapes, and foreign cultures. If there’s no dude, even for a little while, Hollywood ain’t in...

So last night I saw a screening of The Freebie, a new indie film that opens today in select cities, is helmed by first-time director Katie Aselton, and stars Ms. Aselton and Dax Shepard (of NBC’s treacly series Parenthood) in the leading roles. Now, I’m always prepared to loathe dramatic movies that don’t rely on a real script, where the actors ad-lib the majority of their allegedly profound dialogue. (And if I never see another loaded dinner-party scene with 30-something characters laughing, interrupting each other, and hitting the audience over the head with the film’s subtext, it’ll be too soon.)
But I’m not a film reviewer, and this post isn’t a film review. (Besides, I actually liked the movie, despite my best efforts not to. It was well-acted...

Female hysteria used to be considered a medical disorder. It also used to rationalize treating women like a lower, less intelligent race. Thank God that’s over, right? We may not get a diagnosis anymore, but we’re not sure the perception of women has necessarily taken such great strides. Just take a look at movies and TV shows: We’re still bawling, melting down, and burdening others with hysterical outbursts. Hardly empowering.
Don Draper’s outburst on last week’s episode of Mad Men got lots of attention: One teary scene led to an entire Internet meme, complete with a a new blog: Sad Don Draper. Everyone stopped in their tracks at the hilarity of a grown man crying on television, but the women sobbing in our gallery (and countless TV shows and movies) hardly g...

Well, to help you feel like you’re part of Oprah’s last hurrah, she’s letting you Oprah-fy yourself on her website. While no one can fill her shoes, we thought we’d see what a few other talk show hosts would look like if they donned Oprah’s trademark looks throughout the years:

In a recent interview with Guardian Weekend magazine, Morrissey, our favorite mopey musician, said that the people of China were a subspecies because of the way they treat animals. And, while this is an inflammatory statement that any sensible human (celebrity or not) would retract, Morrissey is standing by his words:
“If anyone has seen the horrific and unwatchable footage of the Chinese cat and dog trade – animals skinned alive – then they could not possibly argue in favour of China as a caring nation. There are no animal protection laws in China and this results in the worst animal abuse and cruelty on the planet. It is indefensible.”

Last week, we told you how not to act old on Twitter, but we forgot one thing: Don’t Tweet like Demi Moore. Recently, the 47-year-old actress posted the below photos of herself on Twitter. We can only hope to look half as good when we hit 47 (or, actually, ever) but we also hope to have the good sense not to post bad self-portraits on our Twitter accounts for all the world to see.

New research suggests that breastfeeding for a month or longer will reduce a woman’s risk of developing diabetes later in life. Celebrity moms and normal women alike are preaching about the benefits of breastfeeding in an amusing PSA in celebration of National Breastfeeding Month.
What’s your stance on breastfeeding?

No, we’re not condoning drinking sodas like Pepsi, or, for that matter, investing your life savings with the help of a Ponzi scheme orchestrator (like Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick did with Bernie Madoff – oops!), but it’s not a bad idea to investigate SixDegrees.org, Kevin Bacon’s legit nonprofit charity networking site – to which Pepsi recently gave a $250,000 grant that you can help spend – for good. Check out Kevin’s video that explains it all:

Remember Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, that global phenomenon that started and spread around the world in 1997 – way before Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or Foursquare? Well, a few years ago, Bacon decided to capitalize on his Six Degrees mega-popularity and found SixDegrees.org, a social networking site that’s all about finding charitable nonprofits (more than one million of them), promoting the ones you already care about, and donating to help support them. (You can even find out which causes are near-and-dear to celebrities’ hearts. Woot.) Oh, and Kevin’s wife, Kyra, just won an Emmy. Congrats.

A certain gentleman and I have a habit of arguing over actresses that we do and don’t like: I don’t mind Julia Roberts, but he thinks she’s a horrid actress. I’m no fan of Brooklyn Decker (she looks like a pug!), he thinks she’s not so bad (uh-huh). The other night, we broached the topic of Jennifer Aniston: He hates her for a number of reasons, but his favorite way to sum it all up is by referring to her as “beige.” (I think he got this trick from his favorite film critic.) I feigned some resistance to his logic, but by and large, I think he might be right. So this one’s for him.

Singer-songwriter Imogen Heap wants to make a nature documentary using footage filmed by her fans. She says, “It could be a sunrise from your bedroom window, underwater deep sea diving, a flower in a pavement crack…” You get the point. She wants the film to tour, inspiring the audience to save the planet.
So, this is going to basically be an hour-long clip show set to Imogen Heap’s music. That’s going to inspire people to recycle?
The musician is capable of much-less-empty gestures, though. While on tour earlier this summer, she improvised a song every night about a local cause, and then sold the songs on her website and donated the proceeds to each particular charity. We like that better. Not that we don’t love college filmmakers shootin...

So how many weddings have you attended this summer season? Okay, of that number, how many have you actually wanted to attend? After years of sitting through the nuptials of friends and family members, (and paying through the nose to get waxed, plucked, threaded, manicured, polished, styled, and dressed beforehand), here’s what I’ve decided about them: Weddings usually end up being about half as fun as the bride and groom think they are. (And I don’t make this statement as a bitter, old, always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride spinster. I’m married, and I’m pretty sure that, in actuality, my wedding was probably only half as fun as my husband and I thought it was.)
So, in the spirit of good-natured wedding fatigue, here are eight invitation response cards we real...

Googled any celebrities lately? If you’ve searched Cameron Diaz, you might want to check your computer for viruses. According to McAfee, she is the celebrity most likely to generate malicious sites when you enter her name into a search engine. Coming in just behind Cameron are Julia Roberts, Jessica Biel, Gisele Bündchen, and Brad Pitt.
Cyber attackers use celebrities to steer people to sites that host malware. They are also starting to hide malware in Twitter posts in tiny urls, so be on the lookout and make sure your security software is updated.

Actress Rosario Dawson has gathered some fellow Hollywood luminaries (including Cameron Diaz and Padma Lakshmi) to help fight Arizona’s recent immigration law with a new PSA campaign. The outrageous law allows police to stop and question people in Arizona who look like they may be illegal immigrants.
Dawson’s campaign “United We Win” will launch in September through her organization Voto Latino, which encourages Latino youth and young adults to unify on issues that impact their lives. Dawson hopes that uniting these youth and registering them to vote will help put a stop to divisive racial profiling. Check out a behind-the-scenes preview of the upcoming PSA here:

Some celebrities really care about volunteer work, but these days it seems like any celebrity with a savvy PR agent has done charity work. Images of Angelina Jolie cuddling orphans or Sean Penn distributing water to earthquake survivors abound in the media, and while some find them inspiring, just as many roll their eyes at stars who seem to benefit from pointing out others’ misfortunes.
While we’d like to think that Kim Kardashian genuinely wants to help relief efforts in Haiti, we’ll never know if she’s doing it to look good or because she cares. Then again, does it even matter? Raising awareness for a worthwhile cause is never a bad thing.

We usually feature philanthropic celebrities in our Daily Do-Gooder post, but during Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, which ran August 1-5, these chronically misunderstood creatures (sharks, not celebs) got to swim their own watery red carpet. And, while Jaws can’t speak for himself, we bet he and his relatives are pretty interested in keeping the ocean clean. That’s why Discovery has teamed up with artists to create and auction off shark-themed skateboards for charity. Proceeds go to Oceana, a conservation group that strives to stop ocean pollution, promote responsible fishing, and protect marine wildlife. (We’re gonna need a bigger boat.) The auctions close August 19.

Christina Applegate Fights Breast Cancer: Daily Do-Gooder

Christina Applegate has founded a charity to help women fight cancer. Right Action for Women will give financial aid to high-risk women who can’t afford expensive MRI tests. Applegate, a cancer survivor, hopes that these MRIs will help detect cancer in its earliest stages. Applegate’s own breast cancer was caught by an early MRI scan, which is likely one of the reasons she beat the disease. Christina also hopes to educate women about what it means to be “high risk,” and inform them of things they can do or food they can eat to help prevent breast cancer.

Angela Kinsey (of NBC’s The Office) recently became the face of a new PSA for Alley Cat Allies. She hopes to direct attention to all those who have helped or fed stray cats. Apparently I’ve done it, you’ve done it, and your neighbor has done it (40% of us have, to be exact). These alley cat allies also want to spread the idea of Trap-Neuter-Return – a program that helps control feral cat populations and improve kitty-cat health.
We applaud these efforts, because cats are cool. But we’ll never love them as much as Angela on The Office does.

In between being a Food Network darling, writing cookbooks, having her own Target product line, voicing Paulette for the Disney kids’ show Handy Manny, and raising a daughter, Giada finds time to fight poverty on the side as an ambassador for Oxfam America. Giada advocates for women’s issues, and is helping Oxfam raise $25,000 dollars by this Thursday to support their efforts to help pass the International Violence Against Women Act. Oxfam also aims to give impoverished families a voice when it comes to climate change legislation – to help protect them from future natural disasters. (Donating $20 or more will get you a limited-edition set of photo postcards.) Giada packs a powerfully philanthropic punch into that 5′2″ frame.

There was a time when lady LiLo was known for something other than bleaching her red locks, failed rehab attempts, and inappropriate manicures in court. This 1997 interview was filmed when 11-year-old Lohan starred in her breakout hit, The Parent Trap remake. (We wish her overbearing mother and nutso father had taught her to spit out her gum before doing press.) Listen carefully to her bubbly description of what it takes to be in the movies – does it bring anything to mind? (clang, clang!) And wait…did lil’ LiLo just say she likes the attention? What a shocker.

Eva Longoria Parker will host a gala in Paris for the Par Coeur Association, an organization she founded with her husband, NBA player Tony Parker, who is French. Par Coeur’s mission is to bring attention to fiscally responsible charities that help families and children all over the world.
The Parisian gala will benefit Toutes A L’Ecoles, a nonprofit organization that helps build schools and education programs for young girls in developing countries. It will also benefit Eva’s Heroes – a nonprofit that assists people with developmental challenges by providing them with support. (Eva has a sister who is mentally challenged.)

Humans like going to the movies — Blisstree staff included. There’s just something magical about watching a blockbuster on the big screen as opposed to your 12-inch fingerprint-smudged laptop. But we just haven’t been to the movies much this summer, or this year, for that matter. The last movie I saw in the theater was Get Him to the Greek. And that experience made me not want to spend $20 at the movies for a very, very long time.
The Wall Street Journal thinks that 2010 may be the worst year for movies – ever. Do you agree? Have you seen any movies this year that you loved?

Remember localwashing? When a company pretends that it’s using local goods to create a product, but it’s really just trying to get you to buy crap? Greenwashing is similar, but instead of pretending to be local, companies fake eco-friendliness. And some of our favorite, most well-meaning celebrities just got played. Big time.
In the “Be The One” public service announcement promoting restoration in the Gulf of Mexico following the BP oil spill, celebrities including Sandra Bullock, Blake Lively, and Dave Matthews urged the public to sign a petition demanding government funding for clean-up efforts. But it turns out that the PSA was made by America’s Wetland Foundation, which is funded by Shell Oil –

If former prez Bill Clinton were to throw a party, and wanted to invite the two most random people he could think of, who would they be? Did you guess Justin Bieber and Usher? Then you would be right. But as odd as that sounds, it makes total sense when you find out why.
Clinton and Usher are co-chairs for the New Look Foundation’s first World Leadership Awards, which will raise funds to mentor youth as world leaders. Justin Bieber will perform at the awards ceremony because, well, he is youth – and as such, could bring attention to this charity. See? Not so random after all.

We like Cate Blanchett for plenty of reasons, but we felt especially compelled to call out her latest work to reduce the carbon footprint of the Sydney Theatre Company. The Academy Award-winning actress and her husband, Andrew Upton, are aiming to make it completely carbon neutral by 2011 – they’re installing rooftop solar panels, harvesting rainwater, composting, and recycling waste. Their efforts won the highest honor at Australia’s 2010 Green Globe Awards. (And, of course, the prestigious award of being named Blisstree’s Daily Do-Gooder.)

Apparently, during a placenta-planting ceremony, the gardener made conversation with Oksana Grigorieva (Gibson’s now estranged baby-mama), who smiled at him. Mel assumed that Oksana was having an affair with the gardener, and we all know what happened next.
Way to go, Mel. Taking an already weird ceremony and infecting it with your crazy. We hope that buried placenta haunts you, Mad Max.

Mel Gibson Takes His Anger Out on Nature

Mel Gibson is now not just an enemy of humankind, he’s started abusing the plant world as well. On Wednesday, the aggressive actor was questioned by social services, and took out his anger on a nearby tree. But don’t worry — the tree wasn’t going to stand for that bullshit. (It claims it did nothing to provoke the actor.) Mel apparently injured his hand “quite badly,” according to a friend. When nature turns against you, it’s probably time to back down.
He’d better watch out, or those huge, walking trees from Lord of the Rings are going to come after his sorry ass.

We’re not sure which role we like Dick Van Dyke best in. Rob Petrie? One-man-band Bert? Diagnosis: Murder’s Dr. Mark Sloan? Or is it his new real-life role as the World Wildlife Fund’s spokesman for the new Texting for Tigers campaign? Okay, it’s probably Rob Petrie. But we’re also fans of his animal conservation efforts. Check out the video below (ignore the horrible child actors) and consider texting TIGERS to 20222 to donate $10 to the WWF.

Okay, so Lisa Chodolenko’s newest film (and one of the few summer movies that’s gotten positive reviews this summer) didn’t come out yesterday. I’m a little late to the game, but I went and saw The Kids Are All Right last night. I’ll spare you my review of the lesbian moms, sperm-donor dad, unhappy family drama, but there’s one detail that I’m still hung up on: Why are Julianne Moore and Annette Benning’s characters always brushing their teeth together? There are multiple scenes in which the two otherwise sexy women convene in their otherwise beautiful, sprawling bathroom, and in the midst of their psychoanalytic conversations, they’re constantly sticking toothbrushes into their mouths. (Toothbrush scenes are even in the preview, for Go...

Mel Gibson, Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol

As Mel Gibson’s voicemails to his ex-girlfriend continue to be leaked to the Internet this week, many media outlets are asking questions about Mel Gibson’s mental health. That’s no wonder — the voicemails are laced with profanity, racial epithets, and threats. In a 2008 documentary, Acting Class of 1977, he first talked about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
But are the rants to his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva related to a possible mental health diagnosis? Alcohol? Or something else?
It’s not easy to answer this question, because nobody except Mel Gibson, 54, and his doctors know. All we can do is speculate, based upon observations of his reactions, tone and behavior as recorded in the voicemails that are publicly available. So let’s take a loo...

Hipster Nutrition: Zooey Deschanel Gives Up Vegetarian and Vegan Diet

photo: WENN.com
Attention, all you vegan and vegetarian hipster chicks out there, you just lost one of your own. Zooey Deschanel, queen of the indie screen and, lately, indie airwaves (She & Him), has given up on her vegan/vegetarian diet. Apparently, Deschanel found out that she couldn’t eat soy or wheat, and made the decision to incorporate meat and dairy back into her diet.
We can’t exactly blame her. If we didn’t eat soy, dairy, meat or wheat, we’re not sure exactly what we’d eat besides straight up fruits and vegetables. And, as Deschanel says, “…sometimes you just need a little something, a little meat.”

It's been a couple of years now since I felt the need to vent about the stupidity of Gwyneth Paltrow's fad diets.

Well, it looks like her dieting practices may have caught up to her as she was recently been diagnosed with oseopenia - a precursor to osteoporosis -- at the age of 37.Continue reading... (Source: Diet Blog)
