And so, another working week is about to draw to a close. This is, of course, our signal to daydream about weekend plans. For now, we intend to do some reading, catch up with our short people and promenade with the official Pharmalot mascots. And you? Anything special? Perhaps a drive in the country? A chance to meet with friends? Or maybe balance your checkbook and show the indebted nations how it’s done? Whatever your fancy, have a great time. Oh, and say ‘hi’ to Dad…

Cancer Meds: High Costs & High Abandonment Rates

As countless researchers and marketers gear up for the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in early June to review breakthroughs and close calls, one issue may warrant further inspection - the cost of these cancer meds and how patients are reacting. Why? A new analysis shows that 10 percent of patients are abandoning prescriptions for their oral cancer drugs.
The reasons: higher cost-sharing for insurance coverage, a larger number of overall prescriptions for different medications, Medicare coverage and incomes, according to Avalere Health, which reviewed pharmacy transaction data between 2007 and 2009, and will present its paper at ASCO next month. The study was published in the Journal of Oncology Practice and American Journal of Managed Care (here is the abstract).

And so another work week is about to draw to a close. And this means daydreaming about the weekend. Our agenda includes visiting with a favorite aunt and uncle, taking the short people to assorted sports activities and tackling our overwhelming to-do list. What about you? Will you make time to exercise? Catch a movie? You can always prepare your taxes (and perhaps your payments could narrow the deficit). Whatever you do, be safe and have a wonderful time.
Oncology is a big market and getting bigger, of course, but which drugmaker ranks highest is most effective in reaching oncologists? A recent poll of 475 medical and hematological oncologists found that Novartis commands a leading 12.5 share of details, although its position slipped slightly from the previous year, while Roche jumped from 10 percent to 12 percent thanks to combining sales teams with Genentech.
Meanwhile, Sanofi-Aventis slid from 8 percent to about 6.5 percent thanks to looming patent expirations for Taxotere and Eloxatin, according to ImpactRx, a market research firm. In line with the results, Genentech tied with OSI Pharmaceuticals as the drugmaker with a top tier sales force, followed by Biogen Idec, Amgen, Eli Lilly and Celgene (here is the report).

For nearly four years, Celgene has been locked in a dispute with Canada’s Patented Medicine Prices Review Board over the agency’s insistence on getting pricing info for Thalomid. At issue: Celgene was selling its Thalomid treatment at a higher price in Canada than elsewhere and the board maintained that it has jurisdiction to order Celgene to lower its price (see the board decision).

The drugmaker is battling Canada’s Patented Medicine Prices Review Board over its insistence on getting pricing info for Thalomid. Last December, a federal court ruled the agency was entitled to the data, but Celgene appealed and the Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear the appeal, Bloomberg News reports.
A federal appeals court ruled last December that the review board “has a legitimate interest” in the cost of the med because the price will be paid “by the ultimate consumer in Canada.” But Celgene has a unique argument - since Thalomid was sold at its New Jersey plant and shipped to Canadian docs, Celegene says the review board doesn’t have jurisdiction to demand anything. Canada’s news program, W5 (which I assume is shorthand for who, what, when, where and why) , did a program called, “Pills Patients & Profits.” You can see the entire segment on their web site. Click on the link or image above to watch part 3, which focuses on the cost of thalidomide (Celgene’s Thalomid), which is an important treatment for multiple myeloma.
It’s very informative, so please do watch all four parts. (Source: beth's myeloma blog)

Myeloma treatment drug maker Celgene flagged for a buy

Probably most of us who’ve had treatment for our myeloma have been prescribed one of the drugs manufactured by Celgene. Celgene makes Revlimid® (lenalidomide) and Thalomid® (thalidomide).
That really annoying guy on TV, Jim Cramer (Mad Money, CNBC), says it’s on his list of stuff to buy. According to the CNBC site:
So when do you buy CELG? Cramer said that investors could wait until the annual American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting on Dec. 5, where Celgene is expected to present “some terrific Revlimid data.”
“I wouldn’t pull the trigger on this trade until the week before the conference,” Cramer said.

I’ll be waiting to see what happens during the ASH conference.

By Dennis Hemus
Many Multiple Myeloma patients have been damaged by the high cost of drug treatment and worse some do not receive treatment at all because of cost. The following is a brief summary of how I came to intimately know the drug Thalidomide and the journey it has taken me on.
I was diagnosed early in 2001 at the age of 54 and underwent an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant that summer. The result was fantastic. Life with my family was back to normal and my recovery was so complete I could play hockey, backpack and do physical work as I did pre MM. I was the happiest guy in town.
The cancer slowly gained another foot hold and in January of 2005 I had a second SCT but that one did not work and I was in trouble! My Calgary Oncologist suggested that I try Thalidomde. (In Canada procedur...

Revlimid can extend the lives of patients with an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow by up to three years, but draft guidance from the UK’s National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence has said it is not cost effective and the estimate of three years of extra life was disputed, The Telegraph reports.
The med is used to treat Myeloma, an incurable bone marrow cancer that cuts production of red and white blood cells. An estimated 20,000 people in the UK have the disease and each year around 3,800 new cases are diagnosed. The cancer has a high mortality rate, claiming more than 2,400 lives a year. But Revlimid costs $56,400 per patient per year and breaches the cost effectiveness threshold used by NICE more than twice over, the paper writes.

In a letter to Pharmion ceo Pat Mahaffy, Steven Cohen’s SAC Capital advisors contends that the biotech could be worth more as a standalone company than Celgene’s $2.9 billion offer, depending upon the results of a clinical trial for a rival’s key drug. MGI Pharma is testing Dacogen, a cancer med similar to Pharmion’s Vidaza, which is used to treat MDS, a bone marrow disease. SAC and its affiliates hold an 8.3 percent stake in Pharmion.
“Based on our own analyses and those in the published research of numerous sell-side analysts, we believe that if Dacogen’s survival data are worse than Vidaza’s, Vidaza could capture significantly more than half of the MDS market and peak sales could be $100 million to $250 million higher than current projectionsm,&...

Wyeth forecast flat revenue and lower earnings for this year due to generic competition for its blockbuster Protonix heartburn med and other generic competition. The forecast hinges on keeping R&D spending flat and trimming other expenses, such as 10 percent of its workforce. The drugmaker reported fourth-quarter earnings rose to $1 billion, or 75 cents, from $855 million, or 63 cents, a year ago, on higher sales of its Enbrel arthritis drug and Prevnar vaccine. Excluding one-time items, profits were 78 cents. Revenue rose 10 percent to $5.8 billion. Read more here and here.
Bristol-Myers Squibb narrowed its loss in the fourth quarter thanks to rising sales of its Plavix bloodthinner, which partially offset charges including investments backed by sub-prime securities. Net loss was $89...

Another busy day here in the nation’s medicine chest. Here are a few stray items that have come to our attention…
A famed punk rocker claims his life has been ruined by addiction to Glaxo’s Paxil. Kirk Brandon, best known for his time with 1980’s legends Spear of Destiny, is claiming up to $100,000 following undisclosed personal injuries, The Argus reports. Brandon claims ‘discontinuation syndrome’ caused addiction. Glaxo is contesting the charge.
Pharmion employees will get bonuses for staying while its acquisition by Celgene is being completed, The Denver Business Journal writes.
Celgene Agrees To Pay $2.9B For Pharmion

The up-and-coming drugmaker is paying a hefty premium in this cash and stock deal - Celgene is agreeing to pay $72 a share, way above the $49.28 closing price on Friday (interestingly, Pharmion shares closing up nearly 5 percent for the day and continued rising in after-hours trading). “The acquisition of Pharmion is an exceptional strategic fit that will expand our role as a leader in hematology and oncology,” says Sol Barer, Celgene’s ceo and chairman, in a statement. “Our combined global infrastructure will leverage the therapeutic and commercial potential of Pharmion’s products, particularly Vidaza, which has the potential to become a major global...

And we took the shortest of the short people on a hayride to pick a few pumpkins. Now, though, we are again scouring the world for interesting insights. Here are a few of the latest…

Bristol-Myers Squibb says profit rose 5.8 percent after its top-seller, the Plavix blood thinner, recaptured market share from a generic and sales increased for its schizophrenia and HIV drugs. Second-quarter net income rose to $706 million, or 36 cents, from $667 million, or 34 cents, a year ago. Revenue rose 1.2 percent to $4.93 billion, led by a 27 percent jump for the Abilify schizophrenia pill Abilify. Earnings excluding some items matched analysts’ estimates, and Bristol raised its forecast.
“With the Plavix patent no longer in jeopardy, Bristol’s business fundamentals look solid,”‘ said Roberto Cuca, an analyst with JPMorgan in New York, in a note to clients, Bloomberg News writes. “Bristol appears to have a stable of products that should begin t...
