Go To A Famous Hospital, Get Better Care?

Hospital rankings matter.
Specifically, those published in the U.S. News & World Report carry additional weight. Hospitals use these numbers in advertising campaigns, and patients often choose hospitals based on these rankings.
But does a high place really mean you’re getting better care? Not necessarily. (more…)

An independent expert panel organized by the NIH released yesterday a thoughtful report on the state of the science for prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive decline. The report, available here, summarizes the panel’s review by saying:

“Firm conclusions cannot be drawn about the association of modifiable risk factors with cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease.”
“There is insufficient evidence to support the use of pharmaceutical agents or dietary supplements to prevent cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease. However, ongoing additional studies including (but not limited to) antihypertensive medications, omega-3 fatty acid, physical activity, and cognitive engagement may provide new insight into the prevention or delay of cognitive decline ...

This article makes it seem like the problem still exists, and the Warrior Transition Units may have made some issues even worse by over-medicating soldiers upon their return. Perhaps a government oversight committee will open an independent investigation to get to the truth of the matter, and ensure soldiers are receiving the care they need.

A new report features some scary stats about lung cancer, which is the leading cause of death among both men and women. Check this out:

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women, killing more women each year than breast and all gynecological cancers combined. Every day, nearly 300 women will be diagnosed with lung cancer and about 200 women will die of it.
Lung cancer incidence in women has increased six-fold over the past 30 years.
Twenty percent of women diagnosed with lung cancer today have never smoked.

Report conducted by the Mary Horrigan Connors Center For Women’s Health and Gender Biology.

Last December, the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General released a report showing that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was having a hard time gathering sufficient financial disclosure info from so-called Special Government Employees, or SGEs, who serve on CDC advisory committees. The HHS OIG reviewed info provided to 17 committees that met in 2007 and also found that many SGEs served on committees, even though potential conflicts weren’t disclosed.
And so Chuck Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee who has spent the last few years probing conflicts of interest among government agencies, academic researchers and the pharmaceutical industry, has written a letter to the CDC noting that 41 percent of SGEs didn’t receive eth...

By Jim HarperLast week, the Electronic Privacy Information Center released a petition from a group it spearheaded, asking the Department of Homeland Security to suspend deployment of whole-body imaging (aka “strip-search machines”) at airports.
The petition is a thorough attack on the utility of the machines, the process (or lack of process) by which DHS has moved forward on deployment, and the suitability of the privacy protections the agency has claimed for the machines and computers that display denuded images of air travelers.
The petition sets up a variety of legal challenges to the use of the machines and the process DHS has used in deploying them.
Whole-body imaging was in retreat in the latter part of last year when an amendment to severely limit their use passed the H...

An article about the Fungal Genetics Stock Center written by the curators provides some insight into the 50 year history of this resource. It is a great summary of how the stock center has grown over the years and demonstrates how it is an essential aspect of how research on filamentous fungi is possible. The FGSC staff also provide important infrastructure in organization of meetings like the Neurospora and Fungal Genetics meetings and are also active pursuing their own research. So don’t forget to cite FGSC in your talks and (very importantly) papers.

By Justin LoganDamon Root points out that the Center for American Progress has a particularly one-sided view of “The Progressive Tradition in American Politics.” [.pdf] To add to what Root is saying, my view is that American politics is essentially tribal warfare and an important factor in tribal warfare is the cohesion of the tribes. One way to accomplish this is by romanticizing history to create a powerful identity with which the tribesmen want to associate themselves. A political movement needs heroes, villains, narrative. But CAP’s account of the Progressive movement’s history is remarkably one-sided.
When I ticked over to CAP’s “Progressive Tradition” document [.pdf], I looked to see whether they included Wilson’s 1916 reasoning...

Though definitely a cliché, it’s true that being a mom is a full-time job (with overtime).
Many providers have noted in various surveys and many speakers at conferences have said the federal incentives will not drive EHR adoption because there is no business case to implement EHRs.
Now is the time for health-system pioneers of EHRs to analyze their data and highlight where EHRs have contributed to increases in patient safety and quality of care and decreases in cost. Third-party entities need to validate the results. Then, the results need to be broadcast as widely as possible. (Source: Healthcare IT News Blog)

We women often wait ages longer in line than men for the restroom, only to meet a seat be-dewed with yellow droplets. Whoever last used this toilet was a proponent of the “helicopter” or “crop duster” approach to urination. She squats, hovers, and sprays. She was thus spared contact with a potentially dirty john – with the added benefit of working her thighs and glutes. The downside, for you, is damp.
If your office is home to a chronic crop duster, irate signs in creative fonts tend to appear on stall doors: “PLEASE be considerate and leave this bathroom the way you found it. This is a SHARED space. We don’t come to YOUR house and pee on the seat!” and on and on, depending on how often your co-workers have gotten a wet one. Regardless of when he begins playing, his physician, Stephen Clement, head of the Diabetes Center at Georgetown University Hospital, will be on hand to help the Hoyas' leading scorer manage his condition.

Clement told reporters at a press conference that it may take up to a month to determine which type of diabetes Freeman has. Type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin, afflicts five to 10 percent of all diabetics. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body can't use the insulin that is produced.

Genentech announces positive results of Avastin Phase III study (GOG 218) in women with advanced ovarian cancer. The study showed that women who continued maintenance use of Avastin alone, after receiving Avastin in combination with chemotherapy, lived longer without the disease worsening compared to those who received chemotherapy alone.
A report just issued by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has found that “Forty-five percent of Americans – 135 million people — are more than an hour away from primary stroke centers, the facilities that are best equipped to care for them if they are stricken by the condition.” And, less than 25% of Americans can reach stroke care within a half hour.
When someone has a stroke (cerebral vascular accident, or CVA), the most vital part of treatment is time. The faster treatment can be given, the higher the chances of a good outcome. If patients are living an hour or more from this care, precious time is lost and many lives can’t be saved.
Using information from the United States Census Bureau, the researchers came up with the following statistics:

Stealing lunches from the office frig could be a symptom of a more serious problem — low employee engagement.
“Hunger does crazy things to you,” was the comment made by an employee interviewed on the Today Show segment, “Pains in the Office.” While physical hunger is one reason employees pilfer lunches, I suspect that employees who steal from each other have a different kind of hunger.
If your office is experiencing a rise in the number of stolen lunches, you are not alone. Recently several call center managers told me that they’re getting a lot more “stolen lunch” complaints. It’s no coincidence that these are the same managers who are plagued by low employee morale.
Low morale can have disastrous effects. When employees are dissatisfied and chronically unhappy they ...

This Conversations at The Carter Center event is sold out but will be webcast live at www.cartercenter.org
More than 130 patients have died under suspicious circumstances in Georgia’s public psychiatric hospitals over the past seven years, according to an exposé by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Carter Center has been a leading voice for change in Georgia’s mental health system since this crisis came to light, and has worked to identify strategies to transform Georgia’s shame into a model for the nation.

For many of us who have daily pain due to disease, we are very familiar with the role genetics play in our lives. Do we have to allow fear to enter our lives and our futures if we had close relatives, such as mothers or fathers, who suffered similar diseases? Most of us have been taught in college that your DNA is more or less set in bedrock and determines your future. I have a relative who has been obsessed for many years in finding health information on all our relatives, living and dead. At a family gathering she corners a relative or two and questions them about their health in minute detail. I believe she does this out of sincere concern for the future health of her children and grandchildren but also out of fear for herself. Sadly, I often sense a feeling of hopelessness in her man...

Breast cancer is pink. Colon cancer blue. What color is the ribbon for hospital-associated infections?
Did you know that more people die per year from healthcare-associated infections than from breast cancer? (The stats: 99,000 according to the CDC vs. 40,000 according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The CDC number doesn’t even include people who die from medication errors or surgical mistakes.)
Suffering from medical errors and healthcare-related infections isn’t heroic. There is none of the cultural glam factor that’s ascribed to battling cancer, no Hallmark MRSA cards. But I’m still into making medical error reduction the cause du jour. The best that can happen is that it will save my life. And it is hugely more comprehensible and quickly fixable than finding a...

We have met the new center, and it is us, the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll baby boomers and our younger Gen X siblings and children. Because of our advanced age, we are the “most likely voters” that pollsters and their political clients focus on.
That is precisely the opposite of what happened in the first year of the Obama administration.

By Jim HarperWith a year in office, and perhaps under some pressure to deliver on promises of transparency and change, the White House went on a little PR offensive this week. It rolled out a blog post and a video claiming the transparency successes of the administration’s first year. A lot has gone on, and it’s worth a review. It’s also worth noting some signals that the government transparency project could be heading for a slight detour.
In the video — a little infomercial-y, but tolerable and interesting — federal chief technology officer Aneesh Chopra cites several examples of government use of technology. A system called ISDS Distribute helps the government monitor flu outbreaks, for example, akin to Google.org’s Flu Trends. Chopra touted the ...

Federal prosecutors filed a health care fraud charge against Scott Reuben, who is accused of faking research for a dozen years in published studies suggesting Vioxx and Celebrex offered benefits after surgery. Court documents indicate Reuben, an anesthesiologist, agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a recommendation of a more lenient jail sentence of up to 10 years, a $250,000 fine and forfeiture of assets worth at least $50,000 received for the research, the Associated Press reports.
Prosecutors allege the former chief of acute pain at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Ma., sought and received research grants from drugmakers but never performed the studies. He fabricated patient data and submitted information to anesthesiology journals that unwittingly published it, the AP writes,...

By Daniel GriswoldThe Center for American Progress and the Immigration Policy Center released a new study this morning that finds comprehensive immigration reform would boost the U.S. economy by $189 billion a year by 2019. The bottom-line results of the study are remarkably similar to those of a Cato study released last August.
Titled “Raising the Floor for American Workers: the Economic Benefits of Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” the CAP study was authored by Dr. Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda of the University of California, Los Angeles.
It finds that legalizing low-skilled immigration would boost U.S. gross domestic product by 0.84 percent by raising the productivity of immigrant workers and expanding activity throughout the economy.
Using a different general-equilibrium model of the U.S. ...

By Ilya ShapiroWhen lawyers and other commentators say that a court did not properly explain its decision, it’s typically for hyperbolic effect. But, in a bizarre move, a court in the failed great state of Michigan has dismissed an economic liberty case brought by our friends at the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation for reasons the court quite literally did not explain. The court simply denied the plaintiffs’ complaint and that was that.
Home-based day care owners Sherry Loar, Michelle Berry, and Paulette Silverson have all been taxed by the Michigan Department of Human Services because, according to the state, they are somehow employees of the state and (further!) must pay union dues. because this baseless assertion comes directly from the state DHS, an executive department,...

Health is an important part of economic security – not only in the developing world, but in the US. No one knows that better than those who, for over 40 years, have worked within Community Health Centers (CHCs) providing primary and preventive care to the medically underserved.
These private, not-for-profit corporations are so keenly aware because:

Boards of Directors are made up of at least 51% patients,
They are located in medically underserved neighborhoods,

Why is it that you can buy a Coke or mobile phone refill cards in a remote African village but in these same villages, you cannot consistently get basic lifesaving medicines? Why are pneumonia and diarrhea still the biggest infectious disease threats for children when effective and affordable solutions to prevent and treat a large portion of deaths already exist? What is the contribution of vaccines in creating a more productive society and wealth of nations? These are just a few of the questions asked at the new International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC), launching on Monday December 7th at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. IVAC seeks to translate evidence into policy, and policy into access to life-saving vaccines for all children.
Indeed, access is a hot topic. Wh...

Recruiting and enrolling patients in clinical trials is just one behind-the-scenes link in the complicated process that results in medications winning regulatory approval and the subsequent marketing to doctors. But like a lot of steps in that process, the clinical trial machinery is coming under scrutiny as questions arise over the extent to which doctors are compensated for their participation.
The issue has been the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Senate Finance Committee’s Chuck Grassley, who has probed undisclosed conflicts among various academic researchers who simultaneously receive industry and federal funding. And so the faculty at the Center for Health & Pharmaceutical Law & Policy at the Seton Hall Law School have issued a 62-page paper with some sugge...

Think you are getting a “healthy” popcorn snack when you visit the Movie theater? Think again.
A new study released by the Center for Science in the Public Interest is giving a big two thumbs down on Movie Popcorn and snacks. According to their findings:
A medium combo at Regal has 1,610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. That’s roughly the saturated fat of a stick of butter and the calories of two sticks of butter.
The medium combo is equivalent to eating three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders with 12 pats of butter. For many people, that combo has all of the calories that they need for an entire day.
In the Video Clip below, Dr. Jennifer Ashton of CBS News shows Maggie Rodriguez and Harry Smith just how much saturated fat movie popcorn and soda can have.

I just read about a strain of H1N1 flu that’s resistant to Tamiflu. Four of these cases have been reported at Duke Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. I wondered if it has possibly infected people in the transplant clinic? A friend had her SCT at Duke one year when the flu was rampant in the transplant clinic. She said that a few of the patients became quite ill. She had the flu herself. She recovered and had a second stem cell transplant.
“All four of the North Carolina patients were hospitalized and were very ill with underlying severely compromised immune systems and multiple other complex medical conditions, according to researchers from the Duke University Medical Center. Three of the four died. No details have been released about how the patients caught the re...

Dozens of researchers, clinicians, and ethicists sent a letter asking the NIH to fund research on medical ethics, conflicts of interest, and industry influence on prescribing behavior. Why? They note that stimulus funding has increased the NIH budget significantly, but the agency has “no mechanism for funding research on how commercial interests affect the choice of medical therapeutics.”
In their Nov. 17 letter, they write NIH director Francis Collins that the “NIH funds a substantial portion of the generation and dissemination of evidence, but the uptake of that evidence and its translation into clinical practice is strongly affected by the complex web of relationships that exists among industry, academicians, medical educators and clinicians…

If you didn’t know, The Carter Center has been a leading force in helping to coordinate national mental health policy over the past two and a half decades. It does most of its work behind the scenes and is rarely noted for what it does best — bringing all stakeholders to the same table to talk and work on how they can advance policy and mental health agendas in the country. They do this through year-round work and collaborations with legislatures, advocates, organizations, non-profits, and other...

I tell patients that there are three things to focus on.
The first is biological issues that cause cavities or gum disease. Our first thing is to diagnose these issues. We know we can’t eliminate bacteria, but we can control it. We can create an environment that can be cleaned by the patient – smooth fillings, no deep periodontal pockets. This helps patients take care of their teeth, so they’re more likely to keep natural teeth for life.
Secondly, we must control stress or forces on teeth. There has to be harmony with jaw, muscles, and teeth to distribute forces evenly. As we move the jaws, we want no damaging lateral forces on back teeth. We must establish balance with jaw movement.
Lastly, we keep teeth looking natural for “invisible” dentistry. If a patient is unhappy with the...

The people who are attending this symposium — as well as the Carter Center itself — have done much to improve mental health care in the U.S., but it’s not something you hear enough about. It’s heartening so many great minds coming together to share best practices and ideas for improvement (especially at this unique time in healthcare history). Not just policy wonks, but also physicians, mental health practitioners, administrators, consumers, CEOs, you name it — they’re all here. All talking about wa...

In a memo issued this month, the hospital's Health Information Technology Committee announced the 373-bed facility in Jefferson Hills would revert to printed versions of patients' consultant reports "due to patient safety concerns from the majority of physicians." Jefferson executives downplayed the memo and said they found no evidence that patient safety has been impacted, arguing a small g...

If you were a federal contractor with millions of dollars in federal business, would you ever say that federal regulations are too burdensome? Would you tell a newspaper that you violated federal rules by turning away workers because a federal database reported a discrepancy between the information you submitted and the information the government holds?
I don’t think so.
But on National Review’s “The Corner” blog, Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies takes a federal contractor’s self-serving statements about E-Verify as evidence that it’s “working fine.”
Of course it is! If you carefully consider the evidence you want to! (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

I was stunned to learn that New York City’s Bellevue Hospital was closing its birth center, leaving low income women in the city with no access to a birth center that accepts Medicaid.
Why are childbirthing centers in this country struggling to survive when they ought to be spreading? We know that they provide a wellness-model of pregnancy and birthing (as opposed to a disease model that hospitals have traditionally taken), use best practices in birthing, have excellent clinical outcomes, and save money. Staffed and usually managed by certified nurse midwives, childbirthing centers have been endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
At the end of the Bush administration, someone in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services realized that there was no mandat...

They know what they are doing and their hearts are most certainly in the right place. Thank you, again, to everyone at Marconi Medical Center, and to Nick (the manager) who was the first to extend a helping hand. You guys and gals are amazing! (Source: Cancer, life, and me)

Midweek Mental Greening
First and foremost, I should offer a disclaimer for this post:
The scientific media briefing I watched this morning, “Feeding the Brain to Help Manage Depression: The Role of Medical Foods,” was presented by Rakesh Jain, M.D., M.P.H., the Director of Psychiatric Drug Research at R/D Clinical Research Center in Lake Jackson, TX and Teodoro Bottiglieri, Ph.D. of the Baylor Institute of Metabolic Disease, and sponsored by Pamlab, a pharmaceutical company specializing in prescription medical foods. Neither PsychCentral.com nor myself is affiliated with Pamlab or Deplin, the new medical food discussed during the briefing.
Now that that’s out of the way, on to the more interesting stuff.
“Can we feed the brain to regulate mood disorders?”

In Bell Atlantic v. Twombly (2007) and Ashcroft v. Iqbal (2009), the Supreme Court gave trial courts more latitude to dismiss a lawsuit at a very early stage, before the parties have had a chance to engage in discovery (the often lengthy and expensive fact-finding stage of civil litigation), if judges think the suit is not founded on “plausible” allegations of wrongdoing.
There’s a rich, angry debate about the effect the decisions will have on dismissal rates of meritorious suits in lower courts. But the consensus among academics seems to be that both decisions will trigger a sea-change in lower court practice—one deeply unfavorable to plaintiffs.
We won’t know the real effect of these decisions for many years to come. But a 2007 study by the Federal Judicial Center on the eff...

Did you have one of those games, Operation, when you were a kid or did one of your friends? That was the game with the silly clown body on cardboard with cut out holes, in which you would find various white body parts that you had to remove with a pair of tweezers. But you had to watch out because if you touched the side of the hole, ZAP! The red nose lit up and a buzzer went off. You lost.
Since video games have come about, it’s not surprising to know that the old Operation games have been left in the dust and become much more intense and interactive. The Wii game system is on its second medical game already, Trauma Center: Second Opinion.
If you don’t know what a Wii is, you’ve got to find out. It’s a cool video game system that’s more for us over-teens and ...

The health care industry has been a bit “late to the game” when it comes to social media. However, this week at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, approximately 100 health care communications professionals came together to explore strategies for catching up.
At an event hosted by Ragan Communications, speakers from Mayo Clinic , Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Operation Smile , Kaiser Permanente and others all came to share their experience jumping into the world. Each of us are exploring the opportunities that social media presents to us as communicators, while at the same time balancing the regulations within a fairly conservative industry. Concerns about protecting patient privacy and overcoming cultures that too often fear transparency were significant challenges for all.

Speaking recently a Steamboat Institute conference, I explain that big government is America’s fiscal challenge, not whether the spending is financed with taxes or borrowing.

This issue is important because the statists are trying to create the conditions for a big tax hike. We got huge spending increases under Bush, and now Obama has picked up the baton and is racing in the same direction. Needless to say, the politicians don’t care about deficits when they are spending money. But when it is time to discuss tax policy, deficits suddenly become a giant threat to the economy and turning more of our money over to the political class is the only solution.
The Q&A session also is interesting, as I pontificate about the financial crisis, Keynesian economics, the rule of law,...

When the patient safety field began a decade ago with the publication of the IOM report on medical errors, one of its first thrusts was to import lessons from “safer” industries, particularly aviation. Most of these lessons - a focus on bad systems more than bad people, the importance of teamwork, the use of checklists, the value of simulation training - have served us well.
Jen M. talks about her Essure sterilization reversal. She writes, “I had already tried contacting doctors in my area, however, the answer always was the same – ‘You cannot reverse Essure’, or (my personal favorite), ‘The only way to remove the coils is with a hysterectomy’. When I talked to the staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, I knew this was the right place. Contrary to what most people say, my tubes were not short; in fact there were 9 cm on both sides. Thank you, Dr. Berger, for giving us a second chance to have a baby.” (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

Today the Center for American Progress rolled out its proposal that we add “public directors” to the boards of companies that have been bailed out by the government. CAP scholar Emma Coleman Jordan argues that “public directors will provide a corrective to the boards of the financial institutions that helped cause the crisis.”
One has to wonder whether Ms. Jordan has ever heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. If she had, she might recall that a substantial number of the board members of Fannie and Freddie were so-called “public” members appointed by the President. Perhaps she can ask CAP adjunct scholar and former Fannie Mae executive Ellen Seidman to review the history of those companies for her.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness that can cause severe anxiety or depression – or both – to those who experience it. It can be the result of having something violent or unexpected happen to you (car accident, mugging, military service for example) or something that you feared may happen to you. It may also be the result of you seeing something happening to another person. In other words, it’s caused by a psychologically traumatic event.

I was sent the following guest blog post from DrFirst. Controlled substance regulations have always thrown a bit of a wrench in the cranks of ePrescribing initiatives. So, the fact that the first ever electronic prescriptions of a controlled substance is an important milestone for digitizing healthcare. Check out the full guest blog post:
At 2:42pm EDT yesterday, Michael Blackman, MD and CMIO of Berkshire Medical Center, sent the nation’s first prescription of a controlled substance electronically, using DrFirst’s Rcopia electronic prescribing application. DrFirst was granted a DEA waiver to send Schedule II-V Medications as a part of the Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) pilot program in Massachusetts, a program facilitated by an AHRQ grant.
After Rcopia’s drug,...

The standard view in policy discussions is that emigration of skilled workers from poor countries to rich countries is bad for development becuase it deprives poor countries of much-needed human capital and it reduces growth.
A new study by Michael Clemens at the Center for Global Development challenges this view. Clemens shows that efforts to slow the so-called brain drain “generally brings few benefits to others, and often brings diverse unintended harm.” There is little evidence that limiting skilled migration improves growth or public finances in poor countries, while following such a policy may reduce the demand for education, international trade and capital flows, and the diffusion of ideas and norms. There is also a gap between the policy discussion (that takes the nega...

The most important thing young dentists can think about, beyond gaining clinical expertise and good business practices, is a long term financial plan. I use Cain Watters & Associates, which helped my wife and me establish goals for retirement, as well as life insurance and disability insurance. Security for your family must be worked into your budget, as should disability planning. Having a fixed point in time when you can retire or only work because you want to, not because you have to, gives great peace of mind. These things are possible for dentists, and the earlier you start, the better. I began at 34 and just turned 48, and despite highs and lows, I’m still on course to retire or choose at 55. But I can’t imagine quitting at 55!
When a seasoned dentist like myself looks toward...

It’s not news to most of us that our environment can have an impact on our mood. A cloudy day. Working in a cubicle farm. Growing up in poverty.
But can it also impact our health?
There’s a growing body of research that suggests the beneficial effects of picking and hanging the “right” artwork in hospitals, to help healing and improve patients’ mood:

Nanda, who has a doctorate in architecture with a specialization in health-care systems and design, says scientific studies show that art can aid in the recovery of patients, shorten hospital stays and help manage pain. But she says it has to be the right art - vivid paintings of landscapes, friendly faces and familiar objects can lower blood pressure and heart rate, while abstract pictures can have the opposite ...

Today, the definition of normal eating is blurry. It’s gotten lost amid buzz words like “diet,” “restriction,” “willpower” and “flat abs.” It’s sandwiched between the sizable stacks of “shoulds”: I should diet. I should abstain from dessert. I should count calories. I should avoid “bad” foods. I should have an invisible stomach, smaller hips and thin thighs.
While reading Purge: Rehab Diaries (stay tuned for the review) by Nicole Johns, about the author’s experiences in an eating disorder center, I came across the following definition of normal eating. It was created by Ellyn Satter, an expert on eating and feeding. Satter writes:
“Normal eating is going to the table hungry and eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and eat...

In the second article of the series on robotic tubal ligation reversal, the tubal ligation reversal experts of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center present the most current medical studies on the success and effectiveness of robotic tubal reversal compared to standard microsurgical tubal ligation reversal. Readers may be surprised to know robotic surgical technology does not deliver on the promise of better tubal reversal outcomes. (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

The web is buzzing these days about the huge weight loss Rush Limbaugh is sporting. He’s lost 90 pounds in a relatively short time, and will say nothing other than the fact that he’s used the Quick Weight Loss Center to get the job done.

He says he’s on 1500 calories a day, but doesn’t talk about how much exercise he’s been doing. Anytime one of these celebs talks about fast weight loss I get a little nervous because it can easily give the wrong impression that losing weight is easy and quick. Lasting weight loss takes some time.
I hope he’ll open up a bit more about his efforts as time goes on. I also hope he is not just losing weight but getting healthier.

I have never believed that amalgam creates a major health issue, but that’s not to say some patients may be more sensitive than others, and for them, amalgam can be a problem. My practice has been amalgam free for 10 years because now we simply have better materials. There are benefits in terms of sealing and strenghtening the tooth with composite, as well as the estheitc issue. None of my patients want black or silver fillings, given the alternative.
I will say, amalgam is the most forgiving material for fillings. If it’s impossible to isolate a tooth, amalgam is better than composite. In fact, a poor amalgam is better than a poor composite. When composite fillings fail, they fail big. Dentists have more room for error with silver filling materials. So there is still a time...

Midweek Mental Greening
It’s not scheduled to be complete until 2011, but exciting construction started earlier this month on what sounds like will be an impressive – and green – new mental health center for the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.
The new mental health center is the first of several reconstruction projects that will take place over the next five years within the Palo Alto VA, and according to Palo Alto Online, the new mental health center will:

Use natural lighting, landscaping, and other therapeutic design elements to promote a healing environment.
Use a single-story structure to offer patients easy access to outdoor spaces.
Provide landscaped views from patients’ bedroom windows.

Assessing the Claim that CDT Opposes a National ID

It was good of Ari Schwartz to respond last week to my recent post querying whether the Center for Democracy and Technology outright opposes a national ID or simply “does not support” one.
Ari says CDT does oppose a national ID, and I believe that he honestly believes that. But it’s worth taking a look at whether the group’s actions are consistent with opposition to a national ID. I believe CDT’s actions — most recently its support of the PASS ID Act — support the creation of a national ID.
(The title of his post and some of his commentary suggest I have engaged in rhetorical excess and mischaracterized his views. Please do judge for yourself whether I’m being shrill or unfair, which is not my intention.)
First I want to address an unusual cl...

A recent Gallup Poll surveyed the public’s impression of how various federal agencies were doing their job. Of the agencies evaluated, on the bottom was the Federal Reserve Board. Only 30 percent of the respondents rated the Fed’s performance as either excellent or good. I can understand now why Chairman Bernanke felt the need to take his act on the road. Even the IRS managed to get 40 percent of respondents to see its job performance as excellent or good. A majority of the public, 57 percent, sees the Fed’s current performance as either poor or fair.
The result is not just driven by a general public disdain for federal agencies; over a majority of respondents thought such agencies as the Center for Disease Control, NASA and the FBI were doing an excellent or good...

You may remember the Virginia Tech tragedy more than two years ago, when a student at the university, Seung-Hui Cho, opened fire one day on his classmates, killing 32 people and himself on April 16, 2007. What you may not have known is that Cho’s mental health records from when he was seen at the university’s counseling center went missing and were never located. Until now.

Mental health records for Virginia Tech gunman Seung-Hui Cho that were missing for more than two years have been discovered in the home of the university clinic’s former director, according to a state memo shared with victims’ family members.
Cho killed 32 people on April 16, 2007, then committed suicide as police closed in. His mental health treatment has been a major issue in the vast investig...

Years ago, talking with a public school teacher friend of mine at the end of the school year, she told me how excited she was about her impending orca whale watching outings in the San Juan Islands. Not only would it be a blast, but it would count as a continuing education credit (toward a master’s of education degree, as I recall) that would boost her salary substantially.
Normally, I bite my tongue in such situations. But before I could stop myself I blurted out the question: “Is watching whales going to make you a better teacher?”
The lack of any relationship between education master’s degrees and student achievement is acknowledged in a recent study from the Center for American Progress by Marguerite Roza and Raegen Miller. In fact, Roza and Miller find ...

Quick! Tell me what order you are in the family and what that means to you. Were you the youngest, the baby, who was taken care of, protected (perhaps spoiled) and not left to make your own decisions? Were you the oldest, who had all the pressure and demands placed on you to “set an example?” Or were you a middle, or lost child, who kind of fell through the cracks? You weren’t really special on either end of the spectrum, were you? You may have even been the peacemaker as the middle child, trying to maintain the calm in a family that was otherwise a little chaotic.
Some experts believe that birth order is an important tool in shaping how you turn out as an adult. It determines how you see the world, how you expect the world to treat you, and how you treat others. If you are the baby,...

Speaking of the Center for Democracy and Technology, Leslie Harris gave a terrific quote to Forbes.com for an article on cybersecurity:
The Rockefeller-Snowe Bill represents just the sort of heavy-handed regulation that could stifle innovation and hurt the economy, argues Leslie Harris, president and chief executive of the Center for Democracy and Technology. “If you lock things down too tight and try to centralize and federalize all kinds of standards, you’re on a collision course with the innovators who may be making the next great tech product in their backyard,” she says.
The question is why CDT doesn’t apply this thinking to the field of identification and credentialing. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

The Electronic Privacy Information Center has produced a very thorough analysis of the PASS ID Act, which would revive the REAL ID national ID program.
The EPIC analysis states flatly, “The bill would establish a national ID card,” and, “The intent of this legislation is to facilitate a National ID system.”
That’s quite a contrast to Ari Schwartz at the Center for Democracy and Technology, who alone believes that PASS ID “prevents the creation of a National ID system.” (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

The Carter Center does good work to help promote de-stigmatizing mental health information and journalism, so I thought this announcement was worth reproducing here to help them publicize this year’s fellowship awards.
After receiving a record number of applicants, the Carter Center’s Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism — the only journalism fellowships exclusively for mental health — announced today the winners of its 2009-2010 awards (see below for full list of fellows and their project topics). Since 1996, the fellowship program has educated more than 100 journalists, who set the standard in their field for accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental health issues.

We have posted about cases in which hospitals or academic medical centers hired legislators to promote their political agendas. In one case in 2006, a former Rhode Island state legislator pleaded guilty to selling his influence to a local medical center, which submitted to a deferred prosecution agreement, and whose CEO was later convicted of conspiracy and fraud. (This conviction has been appealed.) In another case in 2008, a former New Jersey state legislator was convicted of fraud for selling his influence to a state health care university and academic medical center, which also had been operating under a deferred prosecution agreement. The latest version of this type of scandal appeared towards the end of last month in the New York Times:Saying that he knew his 'conduct was illegal and ...

Not to brag, but my homeland has a pretty good record when it comes to trade liberalization. Even the center-left Labor party is supportive of multilateral trade negotiations, although they have historically been less enamored of bilateral and regional preferential deals. (A completely respectable view, by the way). Indeed, the most substantial unilateral trade liberalization efforts in Australia’s history occured under Labor governments.
Simon Crean, the current (Labor) Minister for Trade recently confirmed that commitment in the face of trade union opposition. In a statement that could have come directly from Cato’s Center for Trade Policy Studies, he said:
People seem to think that jobs can be protected by reverting to protectionism. The exact opposite is the case. If t...

This morning I blogged on the wave of state governments giving away taxpayer money to businesses in the name of “creating jobs.” One of the examples I mentioned is the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), a state program that exists to generate press releases to provide cover for the state’s lamentable fiscal policies.
Michael LaFaive at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Michigan was kind enough to send me a recent report he wrote on the folly of state subsidies to businesses. State officials like to solicit studies from local universities that just happen to conclude that such-and-such government program is creating X number of jobs. (Of course, in the rare occurrence that a study doesn’t come back with what the bureaucrats were expecting,...

Associate executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society and WBP supporter, Marcy Darnovsky argues in a new article in the Democracy Journal that for too long progressives have built a bioethics around opposition to the religious right, and have thus failed to explicate a positive vision. In an article complementary to the WBP’s report (downloadable here), Darnovsky outlines a framework for just such a vision, one that balances individual autonomy with the real social concerns raised by biotechnological advances, such as how will human biotechnologies reshape our sense of ourselves, our relationships, the shape and feel of the world we occupy together? Who will profit, who will lose, and who will survive?:

June 18, 2009 (tomorrow!) is the deadline to do just that, if you’re one of the more than 1,000 Croydon residents who receive services from the South London and Maudsley National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust (SLAM) who received a patient satisfaction survey to complete.
As part of an effort to encourage patients to complete anonymous patient satisfaction surveys regarding the care they receive from SLAM, the NHS has promised to plant a tree for each completed and returned survey.
SLAM Medical Director Dr. Martin Baggaley says this extra incentive is two-fold: It will encourage patients to share what they like and dislike about SLAM services and help end the shortage of trees in London:

Researchers at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center are looking at a potential link that connects Lou Gehrig’s disease and algae. Lou Gehrig’s disease “attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.”

While studies are still preliminary and additional research is needed, the preliminary thought is that the disease could be triggered by algae in the water. One source says that “certain algae blooms produce a neurotoxin that may trigger the disease. The blue-green algae can be fatal to animals and should be avoided.” Researchers note that this algae is extremely rare.

I’m afraid I can’t tell you what type of lemur this is, but I’ll find out.
Just before the meeting at the Lemur Center, I had a checkup at the Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic. I’ll have the results of my tests on Wednesday. It’s been almost two years since I had a skeletal survey, so I scheduled that for September. The skeletal survey is a series of xrays of the long bones, skull and ribs and spine. I asked about a recent report I read that suggests that PET scans should be used for monitoring myeloma. My doctor does those if there’s activity such as an in...

“European researchers report [at the 2009 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting being held in Orlando, Florida from May 29 through June 2nd] that starting treatment early for an ovarian cancer relapse based on CA125 blood levels alone does not improve overall survival, compared with delaying treatment until symptoms arise.”

Someone forwarded me an email update from our friends at the Center for American Progress Action Fund (motto: “Disagree with us? Then you hate progress.”).
In one blurb, CAPAF’s crack team of spin-disclosers chides Republicans for discussing health care reform using the language recommended by pollster Frank Luntz, who “advised Republicans to fearmonger” Obama’s proposals to death! Or something.
The same email had another blurb titled, “INSURANCE COMPANIES AT THE TABLE?” There, CAPAF’s crack team of spin-disclosers describe how “health insurance companies and lobbying groups” stood beside President Obama last week to announce their support for reducing spending growth. The blurb continues:
However, days later, the insura...

Trisomy – Most Common Chromosome Abnormality
There are many different types of genetic abnormalities. The most common is chromosomal (DNA) trisomy.
Trisomy means there are three copies of any one of our 23 chromosomes. Normally, we have two copies of each. Humans have 23 different chromosomes and each chromosome has a duplicate, or back up copy, giving [...] (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

photo credit-hrtmnstrfrcreative commons licenseIn a story on the wire yesterday, a man in Salem, Oregon was arrested and jailed after shocking his four children with a shock collar meant to train dogs. According to the story"Todd Marcum, 41, said he did it "because he thought it was funny," Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada said. ...Marcum was taken into custody on four charges of first-degree criminal mistreatment. He is in the Marion County jail."Now if Marcum had had a lick of sense, he would have just told the police that he thought his children were autistic, and needed some training. Because he had been on the internet, and he knew that the Judge Rotenberg Center uses shocks to control autistic kids. And it's perfectly legal. Other states even send their autistic kids to Massachusetts to t...
