The World Health Organization’s new patient safety envoy will take on health care acquired infections in his new role, he announced last week. Liam Donaldson, England’s former Chief Medical Officer, pointed out in his first report as envoy that patient safety incidents occur in 4% to 16% of all hospitalized patients, and that hospital-acquired infections affect hundreds of millions of patients globally.
A WHO report outlined the problem.
High-income countries had pooled health care acquired infection rates of 7.6%. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control estimated that 4.1 million Europeans incur 4.5 million health care acquired infections annually. In the U.S. the incidence rate was 4.5% in 2002, or 9.3 infections per 1,000 patient-days and 1.7 million affected ...

I’ve recently come across a great guide about using social media in science. I cover this issue in my university course, Internet in Medicine, and I’ll definitely update my materials with these suggestions. From the Research Information Network:
This guide has been produced by the [University of Derby] International Centre for Guidance Studies (iCeGS), and aims to provide the information needed to make an informed decision about using social media and select from the vast range of tools that are available.
One of the most important things that researchers do is to find, use and disseminate information, and social media offers a range of tools which can facilitate this. The guide discusses the use of social media for research and academic purposes and will not be examining the many...

Just two weeks after we reported on teleanesthesia in the form of remotely-performed nerve blocks, the first report of transcontinental anesthesia comes in.
On August 30, anesthesiologists of McGill-McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, kept watch over a patient in Pisa, Italy, undergoing thyroid gland surgery. Basically they used a teleconferencing setup with four cameras, with two cameras streaming the anesthesia data (ventilation parameters and vital signs), one camera aimed at the operating field, and the last one for any special purposes.
For the second time in two months, the European Medicines Agency has been criticized by its ombudsman for refusing to release data about drugs. Last month, Nikiforos Diamandouros chastised the EMA for refusing to release documents containing suspected adverse reactions caused by Accutane (background).
This time, he upbraided the agency for not allowing outside investigators access to clinical trial data on two obesity pills - Acomplis, which was withdrawn by Sanofi-Aventis, and orlistat, which is sold as Xenical by Roche and as Alli, an over-the-counter med marketed by GlaxoSmithKline. Researchers at the Nordic Cochrane Centre wanted to conduct an independent analysis given that, in their view, biased reporting on drug trials was common, according to Diamandouros. But the EMA refused to pr...

Filed under: Fundraisers, Cancer SurvivorsNorman Surplus, a 47-year-old bowel cancer survivor from Ireland, is flying around the world in a gyroplane to raise cancer awareness and money for cancer charities.

The trek, which has been planned for two years, is about 27,000 miles long and includes stops in 25 countries. If he's successful, the pilot will become the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an old-fashioned gyroplane. Gyroplanes are lightweight aircrafts that were first used during the Second World War for intelligence gathering. They have a single engine and are helicopter-like, open cockpit machines.
"Before I got cancer I had never done anything like this," Surplus, who learned to fly after his cancer treatment, told the Belfast Telegraph. "When I was recovering after s...

Reform of the NHS is a difficult nettle to grasp as a general election approaches. The public may easily but inaccurately assume that much needed reform is a threat to the NHS principle of a decent standard of medical care being available to all, independent of means and status. They easily forget that such medical care has not been available to all for a decade or more. For those of us who work within the NHS, and experience the catalogue of waste that surrounds us, it is deeply depressing to see that there is a bi-partisan policy that can best be summed up as “leave the NHS alone”...continued here (Source: NHS Blog Doctor)

This picture is just one out of five or six nice paintings, colorful. Enjoyed them very much while visiting Paris, so check them out when you have the opportunity.

You can find more on Kandinsky and syneasthesia on this blog.

As for email, you’ll be lucky to get any reply.
Such is the sad state of affairs that a comment in my Facebook wall got my attention. Is the MOH contemplating having a call centre?
If the MOH indeed had a call centre, what would features would you like this call centre to incorporate?

Given the whole distracting "controversy" of whether Nintendo Brain Age "works" or not, I have started to use the following "brain teasers" in my talks in order to help the audience gain a more useful perspective of what is going on. They worked great both in the Medicare Readmissions Summit in DC a few weeks ago, and at the Games for Heath Conference last week.
Q: How many soldiers in the US Army have gone through computerized cognitive testing before being deployed, and why?
A: Over 150,000, in order to establish an objective starting baseline and identify potential PTSD and TBI problems upon their return

As I am fascinated with autism worldwide I did some surfing around. And, however countries and cultures may vary, there are (naturally) some common remarks families with a child with autism deal with worldwide, for instance the worries from mothers on how to get the best care for their child. This is a story about the mother of Christopher, a child with autism. The Komo Centre for Understanding Autism was established in 2006 by Elizabeth Kaleeba, the parent of an autistic child. It is the first institution of its kind in Uganda. The Centre is an education, care and support centre for children and families affected by autism in Uganda .The US Centers for Disease Control estimates that autism affects between 2 and 6 individuals per thousand people. In Uganda, with a population of about 28 mil...

4. The late Douglas Adams - for instance, the beginning of “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe“:
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Next time you consider benefits that could come from becoming a fly on the wall … toss in robot flies that yield secrets about the human brain. How so? An international contingent of research experts is meeting this week to create a "virtual fly brain" as a way to understand more about how human brains work. Neuroscientists, biologists and computer experts are currently gathering in Edinburgh to look into possibilities for simulating the brain of drosophila fruit flies. Why create a robot from this species?Apparently, this fruit fly possesses about 100, 000 neurons. Within a rather simple brain ... the fruit fly manages complex behavior, including a unique capability to learn.J Douglas Armstrong, at Edinburgh University's Centre for Bioi...

This study challenges the theory that depression and dementia are caused by another factor. It therefore adds weight to, but does not prove, the theory that depression is a risk factor for dementia. However, this study has shortcomings, and further research that is free of these should provide a clearer picture. Until more is known, depression sufferers should not be overly worried that they will develop dementia."

I am so pissed off this morning. Mainly because of the assault that must be led by Phillip Morris, DeCode and the Devil Himself. In a recent press push.....from as far as I can see. There is now a "magic bullet" for smoking and avoiding cancer. Recently published data in the Journal Nature is being over hyped. From Good Morning America to Fox News to MSNBC to my friend Hsien at Eye on DNA (Well hers isn't so much hype)From Her blogAll three studies identified regions on chromsome 15 that are associated with nicotine dependence, lung cancer, and peripheral artery disease. The deCODE study focused on SNP rs1051730 located on chromosome 15q24 in the CHRNA3 nicotine acetylcholine receptor. People with one copy of the “T” version of this SNP had:30% increase in risk of lung cancer OR of 1.32...

Where is being dah sun?” The move to Daylight saving has dire effects in some households. I remind everyone of the vagaries of time travel as we stumble and bumble our way to school on foot. As we approach the traffic light I prompt them.“Now don’t forget to say hello to the Lollipop lady.” They gasp, suddenly alert and searching.“Lollipop! Lollipop? Where it is be dah lollipop!”“You know, the lady we see every day at the traffic lights.” “Why is she called a lollipop lady?”“Because…..er…….because she holds up a sign that looks like a lollipop. Isn’t she called a lollipop lady here?”“Never heard that before.”“Really...

The Green Party’s Chris Tindal successfully made it an air-tight battle for second place (against the NDP) in what was otherwise a Bob Rae rout of the Toronto Centre federal byelection. Congratulations to Mr. Rae. As of 1:16 a.m., with all 275 polls reporting, the results (in order of votes) are:

The issue of homework comes to a head, as I knew it would. It is tangential to the subject at hand, as I sit in the psychiatrist’s office. We brainstorm the matter. This is both a comforting and disappointing exercise. It is comforting because it reassures me that the psychiatrist is down to earth. He is no fool. He demonstrates a masterful command of the all the hic-cups. He lists each strategy in turn, adjusted for the dynamics of three small children where two are autistic. At the same time, it is a disappointment because I have tried each an every one of them to no avail. The only one I have not technically tried, is the idea to bribe someone to come into my home and help one child with their homework. I have not tried this technique for the pure and simple reason that I cannot find ...

According to a study published today in the journal Nature shows that a gene called Tip60 is involved in the development of breast cancer. But more importantly.........reduced expression of Tip60 protein leads to more aggressive tumors. Tip60 is a tumor suppressor gene unlike others.....Let me explain. Usually you are required to have both copies of a tumor suppressor gene affected to start developing tumors. I feel that this theory along with all things mendelian will start to fade away. Why? Because we are much more complicated that punnet squares. The field of systems biology is growing and we will soon realize that we are a complex interactome, not just autosomal/Xlinked/Ylinked dominant/recessive genes. So where were we? Well it turns out that this tumor suppressor gene only needs one ...

Last week I spent a very pleasant and productive two days attending a conference organized by Autism West Midlands and the Autism Awareness Centre. It was very well organized and the content was both interesting and practical. I also had the pleasure of meeting Maureen Bennie, one of the organizers, whom readers may remember from an earlier blog post of mine. My only regret was that I had to leave early to catch my train and so missed the closing presentation, “Understanding My Autism” by John Simpson.
The headline speaker was Temple Grandin. Having read her books and heard her speak before, I found little that was new in her presentation. She did make it abundantly clear that she struggled with abstract concepts and had to be able to ...

But this may not be entirely true.Think about this:Using Chinese herbs alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy may help protect a breast cancer patient's bone marrow and immune system. It may also improve the overall quality of life for women, say researchers at the Chinese Cochrane Centre in Chengdu, China. It is well known that women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer experience significant short term side effects such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, inflammation of the gut lining, decreased numbers of red and white blood cells,...

Private Eye - System FailureA fascinating report in this week’s Private Eye on New Labour’s disastrous mismanagement of the NHS computer systems.“Waste and inefficiency in the NHS is intolerable. A penny wasted is a penny stolen from a patient.” (Patricia Hewitt)This is the story of the theft of 1,240,000,000,000 pennies from patients through an IT project that wasn’t wanted and doesn’t work. (Private Eye)Dr Crippen has a problem visualising large numbers. £12.4 billion sounds a lot. But how big is big? What could you do with £12.4 billion. Private Eye comes to the rescue:£12.4 billion would pay for 26,000 doctors for ten years. Those of us working within the NHS have long been aware of the futility and waste of this IT system. The details that emerge from the Private Eye re...
