By Neal McCluskeyIn dribs and drabs the plot thickens in the quiet little saga surrounding the GAO's brutal and broken August report on for-profit colleges. The latest development is the near-silent transformation of the GAO office that produced the knee-capping report that was later quietly reissued with lots of new, for-profit-exonerating material.
I say "near-silent transformation" because word about it somehow got to the Coalition for Educational Success, a career college advocacy group. Yesterday, CES issued a press release on the matter, and this morning I contacted GAO's public affairs office about it. To the GAO's credit, their public affairs folks quickly sent me a copy of a memo announcing the end of the Forensic Audits and Special Investigations (FSI) team. Sadly, it...

A source just told me that an insurance company that does only professional liability insurance for doctors is providing a 5% discount to all doctors who implement EHR and use it in a meaningful manner.
This is really interesting news for me since I’ve seen a number of really interesting debates about whether use of an EHR would actually raise liability insurance for doctors or lower it. This is the first confirmed company I’ve found that has actually acted on a doctors use of an EMR in their liability insurance premiums (of course, maybe there are more I don’t know about).
Of course, there are a lot of details missing in the statement posted above. For example, how does the liability insurance company plan to measure if the doctor is using an EMR in a “meaningful m...

Last Wednesday, I took off for Las Vegas, to attend the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. Aside from the show, my family lives there, so it affords me the opportunity to visit them as well, which I always love. The drive out there was actually quite nice. I didn't see the sun until I got onto highway 58 and up the hill a bit. As many in California know, in winter, northern and central CA are either fogged in, or it is rainy. Once up the hill, the sun was out and the temperature jumped from 44 to 60 degrees. It was comfortable.I got there in about 10 hours, taking a few breaks along the way to rest my arm a bit. I was pretty sore when I got to the RV that I stay in. Typically, I bring the SUV for around town transportation, and my father brings his RV for the show. This year, he also brought ...

I’m attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. It’s one of the nice little advantages of living in Las Vegas. The first year I attended there wasn’t much healthcare presence at all. Each year it seems like there’s more and more. The largest healthcare vendors at CES are PHR vendors and medical device ones. Then of course we have the big booths like Microsoft and Intel. I’ll be interested to see how HIMSS 10 compares to CES. The pace of technology is amazing. For example, check out this picture of a video wall at the Intel booth that’s touch screen. It’s not hard to imagine one of these in a hospital or doctor’s office:

about medical marijuana
September 23rd, 2009
Los Angeles City Councilmember Dennis Zine told a standing room only crowd at Tuesday’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee hearing that an ordinance that does not recognize sales of medical cannabis would not work for Los Angeles, but he is worried about creating a policy that violates state law. The Councilmember’s ambivalence is part of the confusion that dominated yesterday’s marathon committee meeting. The PLUM committee voted to continue the debate on the regulations, Zine’s motion for more study into relevant case law, and a progress report from the planning department for another week to allow committee members more time to review the material.

Part of what the committee is reviewing is a ...

SWAT-Style Raids on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in San Diego
Come Day After City Council Acts to Regulate Dispensaries
Patients Condemn Tactics, Express Concern for Safe Access
SAN DIEGO – Several medical marijuana dispensaries were raided in San Diego today, after the City Council yesterday voted 6-1 to establish a taskforce to create dispensary regulations by early next year. Medical marijuana patients and advocates criticized the raids’ timing and tactics.
“These raids are unnecessary and unacceptable. Yesterday the City Council agreed to create local regulations for dispensaries. We could have those rules as early as Janu...

Reports continue to come in of federal raids of medical marijuana dispensaries up and down the West Coast.
San Diego has been hardest hit. In the midst of the trial of the Operation Green RX defendents, on the heels of the decision by City Council to create yet another task force on medical marijuana, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis went on a rampage.

In San Diego 14 dispensaries were robbed and vandalized and 31 people kidnapped, tortured, and held for ransom. The terrorists, led by San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, claim they stole $70,000, 6 guns, and an undisclosed quantity of marijuana. In justification of the robberies, Dumanis states that a single dispensar...

The district attorney is defending this week’s raid on medical dispensaries throughout the county, saying they were simply drug dealers out to make a fast buck.

Authorities say 31 people were arrested in a sting that targeted medical marijuana distributors in San Diego County.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said Thursday that she supports marijuana use for medical purposes - as allowed under California law - but that the distributors may have been operating stores to sell drugs illegally.
No charges have been filed. Prosecutors say possible charges include sale and possession of marijuana and firearms offenses....

Hi, my name is Patti Walker and I am both a medical marijuana recommended patient as well as a former San Diego collective employee.
I was involved in the raids yesterday and my collective was hit pretty bad. I worked at Beneficial Care Collective in downtown San Diego at about 1:30 pm I walked into the office and heard pounding and saw police task force every where. I had no idea what was going on and then an officer pointed a shotgun at my face and told me to sit down, and there I sat.

Myself and everyone else who worked there was then handcuffed and put in a room, they told me it was just procedure and I wasn’t in any trouble just caught up in something really. About 30 min later they told me and the other employees were being arrested and charged with felony sale of marijuana.

Hello,
My name is Sebastian Maselli, I am a legal medical marijuana patient in California, as well as a founding member of The Healing Dragon collective. I am also an Iraq war veteran that has honorably and voluntarily served our country in the United States Marine Corps for over seven years. I know the meaning of sacrifice. I understand struggles. Most importantly I have witnessed first-hand how the war on terrorism has affected our military members. I have seen what happens to my brothers and sisters in the military medical system, Marines, sailors, and soldiers get pumped full of prescription medications. One med is for this, the other is for that, and the other seven meds help to counteract the side-effects of the first few drugs. This is not to say that they are not getting the care t...

Dr. Larry Emmott, dental technology guru, lecturer, consultant, and DentalBlogs contributor, covered the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this past weekend. In addition to gathering some great information on the latest in technology and how that will translate into the dental field, Dr. Emmott had three main observations to share. First, wireless is huge. Second, touch computing is going main stream. And third, despite the economic “crisis,” attendance was tremendous. Keep reading to learn about the new toys and gadgets Dr. Emmott discovered at CES…
Video Surveillance
Here is an off the wall idea (or maybe it is a mounted on the wall idea) I got at CES. Video surveillance cameras have changed dramatically. They are now cheap and easy to set up with wireless t...

Governor rejects Democratic budget plan
By Dan Smith

Published: Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he will not sign a package of bills Democrats sent him today to increase taxes and make program cuts, an $18 billion effort passed without Republican votes.
The governor said the package did not include provisions to stimulate the economy by loosening environmental standards, making more use of contractors on public projects and give him flexibility to furlough state workers without union intervention.
Republicans claimed the Democratic package was illegal because it raised $9.3 billion in taxes without a two-thirds vote. But Schwarzenegger did not criticize that approach.

The state Senate and Assembly made their way through the package of bills requi...

coalition for economic survival wins 2 tenant protection victories wednesday at la city hall (1103)

chers—
20-30 CES tenants and advocates weighed in at city hall when i was there wednesday. an interesting statistic (if i heard right — it’s astonishing) is that 75 percent of the rental housing in LA falls into this “mom & pop” category. 4 units or less, owners live on site and own no other property.
“good faith” evictions are when a landlord kicks a tenant out to move a family member into the unit vacated (an eviction is pretty much an eviction, no matter the faith). the big issue involved was the amount of the relocation fees landlords should be paying evicted tenants in that situation.
will start tracking of this movement at aids-write. i believe our causes are naturally allied.

Educational materials from Pankey and LVI are right at your fingertips these days. You can even earn CEs online.
When it comes to electronics … I still have a long way to go. And it seems that whenever I take time to read the manuals or figure out the buttons … my knowledge is very short lived … before it all changes again. That’s also why I value events such as the Consumer Electronics Show or CES. If you’re skilled with electronics you’re likely already aware of the Consumer Electronics Show … which is the electronic industry's largest expo. It’s starting today and running through January 10. Will you be there? The CES develops business intelligence for firms in several ways: 1). When companies use CES to market technology … they also ratchet up their reps' business IQ . Simply put ... people use far more ...
