As requested by Utility – a laser and smoke installationin Eindhoven’s Phillips Museum, a room I spent HOURS in running up and down the stairs, setting long exposure times and generally playing around with someone else’s artistic cleverness.
Fun indeed! But mainly only to people who think in time as a long series of fractions of a second. (Source: Trauma Queen)

It wasn’t all that long ago that women with ADHD were almost completely ignored. The educational and medical community were convinced that ADHD was a childhood condition that affected mainly boys leaving millions of girls and women to deal with their symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and restlessness on their own. While the story of women and ADHD has improved somewhat much of the male leaning diagnostic criteria has yet to be modified sufficiently to help girls and women receive the kind of help they need.
Even if a women has done her research before hand and feels confident she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder few medical professionals have the tools and diagnostic experience to confirm her suspicions and provide a comprehensive treatment plan.
Because there are no ...

JC wanted a picture of where I go to unwind.
And this is exceptionally boring.
But this is it.

When my head is too busy, or I’ve had a bad day, or I’m just plain tired and need to recharge, what I want is solitude.
I’ve been like this as long as I can remember.
It’s not anti-social.
At least, not actively so.
It’s just a reflection of how hideously socially inept I can be.
Its allowing my brain to not worry about what I’m saying to whom and what they might be thinking and whether or not they’re alright or if someone’s offended or maybe I’m saying the wrong thing or being not funny enough or insufficiently good company or maybe I’m doing that thing I do where I like someone’s company and so make deeply offensive comments to them, like calling their granny a c., or...

“A pigeon eating a banana” said Carrie.
Bitch.
Thus began my day of “Going out to take the photos where I’d read the original brief and gone “Awwww, f. *off*, seriously?””
I wasn’t convinced that pigeons would eat a real banana, so I went to LicketySplit, the lovely little retro sweet shop in the middle of town and bought a bag of foam bananas instead.
Exactly why I thought that pigeons would prefer to eat extruded chemical foam over organic matter, I have no idea.
Shut up.
I was under a lot of pressure, right?
So, armed with a bread roll from Greggs, I found a couple of pigeons on the High Street, just outside my old office, in fact, and piled the bananas up on the pavement. Then I started flicking crumbs towards them to try and entice the birds to pose next to the s...

That’s what Alison said.
That’s what she wanted.

So here we have a little bagpiper on a haggis supper (with salt and sauce) in front of Edinburgh Castle.
That there is pretty feckin’ Scottish.
All it’s missing is some heroin.
And social deprivation. (Source: Trauma Queen)

, as requested by Amaranthine

There are two rabbits that live in our house. They’re called Maud and Siobhain.
They met at Greenham common in the 80′s and, aside from a short break when Siobhain left to set up a Nu-Wave Punk/Physiotherapy Arts studio in Bremen in early ‘90s, they’ve been together ever since.
They both eschew the term “wife” and state that “partner” fails to express what they have together, claiming it’s a product of a society that’s so afraid of its own desires it is forced to emasculate its own language to empty gestures.
Siobhain calls Maud her “Life Companion With Significant Benefits” and will tell you, when you visit their house in the bottom of our living room shelves, that she’s not staying here long, that she knows a man in Stoke who ...

Louise wanted “dancing” and I thought hard about photographing a ceilidh. But I’ve had this idea in my head for a while and wanted to play with it, so here you go.
Let it be said that I am not a dancer.
I’ve been to a dance class once.
I hurt myself.
At a ceilidh, where the movements are predetermined, great. But ask me to dance at a gig, or a festival?
Worse, ask me to dance in a CLUB.
Euch. I have no idea what to do with any parts of my body.
My arms hang limply by my sides and I move my shoulders around a lot in slow, languid ovoids.
I might nod my head emphatically.
Someone once said I danced like a mixture of Gene Simmons and Kevin the Teenager.
So I thought I’d just try and throw some shapes in the dark, with a thirty second exposure, and some glowsticks knocking a...

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing several amazing women on how they juggle all the responsibilities that come with their professional and personal lives. (Stay tuned for the article in our mental health library!)
In addition to sharing what works for them, they provided a slew of solutions for readers, too. Here’s what they had to say…
1. Challenge society’s standards.
In our society, productivity is prized and praised. We reward workaholic ways, even though this is both emotionally and physically unhealthy.
As such, productivity coach Laura Stack, MBA, suggested “challenging the social acceptance — even society’s encouragement — of these common phrases:

‘Look how productive you’re being. You are accomplishing great things’
‘After all, you posses...

, the interior thereof, as requested by Vinaigrette Girl.

A pub in the Cowgate, a basement level street in the Old Town of Edinburgh down which the social effluent of the city flow every weekend. Clubs and pubs line both sides of the street. It’s so busy that in the evening its closed to traffic, such is the volume of pissed-up pedestrians wobbling over into the road.
Sometimes, when I’m bored on an RRU in the City Centre I drive, ever so slowly, down the Cowgate and pretend I’m in a zombie movie. It’s surprisingly convincing and consequentially awesome.
But in the middle of this shit-heap of shit-heads, there’s Bannermans. Built into the vaulted arches that hold up the cathedral and court buildings above it, it’s a low-roofer, snug, welcoming rock bar. With live music. And ...

Who could answer these questions better than the expert SharpBrains 2011 Summit speakers? Discover below the answers of 7 of them.
.1. How would you define “brain fitness” vs. “physical fitness”?
Alvaro Pascual-Leone, Harvard Medical School: Physical fitness can refer to an overall or general state of health and well-being. However, it is also often used more specifically to refer to the ability to perform a given activity, occupation, or sport. Similarly brain fitness might be used to refer to a general state of healthy, optimized brain function, or a more specific brain-based ability to proce...

24: A Song You Want Played At Your FuneralAnother one that gave me cause to think. Quite fancied the organ version of Can't Always Get What You Want from The Big Chill. If you're confused, go find the film, and watch it; you won't be disappointed, and you can play 'Spot Kevin Costner' while your at it.Anyway. I chose this.(There is another live version on YouTube, but I wasn't keen on the sound quality, and this one coincides with the intro to one of my favourite films...) I ummed and aahed about choosing something by Rage Against The Machine, or Metallica (One, probably). Or Nirvana? But settled on this, instead. It's an angry song, at least.Sung by another (dead) guy I have a little man-crush on. (Source: The KnifeMan)

19: A Song From Your Favourite AlbumI have had to fudge a bit here. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks is probably my favourite, or Let It Bleed, or Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out by The Stones. They've both featured, so I'll default to my next favourite album: Let It BeThere are innumerable videos for this song out there, including a demo where Paul swears at the beginning that I found once, but never again, and one where some dude has overdubbed the two different guitar solos; but I like this version; under-produced, nice backing "ooo-ooo"s.... though if I'm honest I prefer the original (album) solo. It's... dirtier.Go, seek, findEdit: Persistance does pay, it would seem, although my memory isn't what it was apparently. A demo with heavy vocals, bass and swearing, at about 1:54. So I thought I'd just point out some challenges I've noticed, hoping it might generate some ideas. Solutions and fixes don't have to be big and complex, and I hope this will prove the point.See if you recognize this product (sorry for fuzzy phone shot). Can you spot at least three small ways it could be improved? The first part is easy. This is a jar of Dex4 dextrose tablets, love them or hate them you've probably used them and have some at home. By the way, these are Walgreens-branded Dex4 tablets, so some issue...

It is very common to have a learning disability together with ADHD. Research shows that thirty percent of people diagnosed with ADHD also have a learning disability. Beyond learning disabilities, over fifty percent of individuals suffering from ADHD have some other type of brain-based disorder; this explains why depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder and other similar disorders occur at an incidence that is higher than normal in ADD clients.
One type of learning disability that almost every person with ADD will have is an integrative processing deficit. This is the ability to take in information, process it quickly and make use of it. Most people with ADD are either slower than others in performing this process, or have trouble performing it at all; it is not that they do not understa...

High Schools to the President: What Thrill?

By Neal McCluskeyA couple of years ago, I was highly critical of President Obama's first, it turns out annual, televised school-year kickoff address to America's students. At the time I got a lot of emails telling me how outrageous my stance was, and how anyone, of any political persuasion, should be thrilled to have the President of the United States talk to their kids.
Apparently, the thrill is gone when you actually have to do a little work to get the President. According to internal White House memos, the President's "Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge" -- in which schools compete for a chance to get the Prez as their graduation speaker -- had generated only 68 applications as of February 28, which was after the original application deadline of Feburary 25.
Janet asked for “Warhol Pussy Cat”.
I’m glad she put “cat” in there.
Because, you know, that could’ve been a totally different image.
*shudder*
Anyway.
This is Gabriel, who lives with us (I hesitate to describe him as “Tammy’s cat”). He rather enjoys biting people and frequently stalks into my room and wakes me with a low “mrow?” before savaging the shit out of me.
When I wake in the night and peer into the shadows, I’m sometimes lucky enough to spot an eye glinting at me.
It’s like this, but less colourful.
And, thank f., there aren’t nine of him.
Original image, btw, is just as scary. (Source: Trauma Queen)

Clearer, huh?
Anyway – last year I was privileged to be asked by my mates Jen and Annie to go up and record their massive Yarnbombing of Inverness. They produced some amazing pieces of work (lots of which you can see by clicking on the image above and exploring the photoset in Flickr).

Clare wanted the Astronomer Royal’s house in the middle of Edinburgh. On the same snowy morning I took Winter Dawn down there, I wandered around the Royal Observatory to try and find an angle by which I could take a picture of his Royal StarGazery’s domicile.
But no.
Big gates, big walls, big signs telling me to stay away from the big walls and big gates and big telescopes inside, in case I, I don’t know, manage to focus it onto someone else’s house just as they’re showering and I get a glimpse of their winky.
That’s why there’s such security.
Yes.
Anyway, as such I decided that the Astronomer Royal’s house and s...

Rural isn’t a concept that applies to Edinburgh very readily, it being, you know, a city. So when Piper requested “A snowy rural scene, with dawn or sunset light” I knew I was going to have to make a special effort.
In the south of Edinburgh there’s Blackford Hill, a rounded peak with the Royal Observatory on the top of it and rolling fields with gorse bushes beyond. My only real experience of it is when patients (mostly older dog walkers) trip or collapse and call, letting us know that they’re “on the hill, near the observatory”.
This is rarely useful, the observatory being at the top of a largely circular mount. Ergo,...

Hel wanted a breakfast shot of perfect eggs and crispy bacon. I’m prepared to reshoot this if she wants, but this is a more visceral breakfast for me. After two hours of shooting in the snow I got battered into this bad boy. Bacon, sausage, haggis, roasted tomatoes and mushrooms, home made bread and cheesy scrambled eggs.
Not pretty, not perfect, but hit the spot like a rocket. (Source: Trauma Queen)

As requested by Linda, this stair gate is in the middle of town and makes me smile every time I see it, I love the transition from negative to positive leaves as the sculpture (and I maintain this is more art than function) stretches up high.
I wonder who lives there… (Source: Trauma Queen)

Today is 1/11/11. Maybe for you, it will be a day filled with firsts.
The first time you sought therapy. The first step you took towards healing yourself. The first time you realized how far you’ve come and how much you have achieved towards your goals and your mental health.
If so, I hope you will celebrate these firsts and remember them when times get tough. Because ever year brings with it a new challenge, an obstacle we didn’t foresee and with it an opportunity for self-growth and a chance for a better more balanced life. When that opportunity comes, will you take it?
For me, I’ve finally come home. The holidays are over. And instead of being surrounded by the voices of my family members, I’m here sitting back at my home in silence.
This Christmas was as chaotic...

Photos are being taken, including one chilly, chilly morning session. More on that later.
MamaBee wanted pictures of Louis hurtling around in his new chair, but recognised that this was a no-brainer once the contraption arrives.
Instead she wanted “duck”. I considered taking pictures of peoples heads while I threw things at them, but instead decided to go for something more ornithological.
You know when sometimes you’re lying in bed and you wake with a jerk, thinking you’re falling?
This duck is responsible for that feeling.
Evil yellow bastard. (Source: Trauma Queen)

Healthy People 2020, a continuation of Healthy People 2010, was started by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. It’s a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan that sets public health goals — with the deadline being 2020 in the latest iteration of the program.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is now launching a challenge for developers and researchers to make wellness applications for the Healthy People 2020 campaign — they are providing rich research data sets for free, some that can be found here, giving developers and researchers ample data to write applications with.
They are also providing a list of topics for potential apps from a variety of categories, ranging from apps related to cancer to substance abuse. (more…)

Blisstree is big on biking – for both exercise and as an eco-friendly transportation alternative – so we’re pretty stoked about the Clif 2 Mile Challenge. Here’s how it works: At least 40% of travel in the U.S. consists of trips that are 2 miles or less, and over 90% of those trips are made by car. So Clif Bar is encouraging commuters to ditch their cars and ride their bikes for all commutes that are 2 miles or less – and they’ll give away $100,000 to three non-profit organizations that support bike advocacy and fighting climate change.
Check out this video to learn more about how much biking can help the environment, and visit Clif 2 Mile Challenge’s website to register for the challenge.

Do you remember the visceral sensations of angst over an upcoming final exam? Or the first procedure as an independent doctor? A major presentation, perhaps?
Life’s exams test not only specific knowledge and skill, but one’s self esteem as well. And it’s the self esteem portion that creates the stomach churn, the palpitations, and the random thoughts of doom.
The future lurks over you for weeks, like a weighty backpack, or the possibility of encountering the bully on your walk home from elementary school. (For my bony self, her name was Marilyn.) (more…)

I’m pleased to introduce our new blog, Life as You(th) Know It, by C.Y. (“Yan”) Chow. It is a blog about dealing with everything youths today have to deal with — from college and study woes, to relationship issues, family crises, friendship drama and everything in-between.
I believe teens and young adults often have the greatest need for mental health and psychology information and resources, but also face the greatest challenge in actually accessing such resources (for numerous reasons). Hopefully blogs such as this one help de-mystify the psychology and mental health of youth.
Despite campaigns by both parents to become either an architect or lawyer, Yan is currently a final year BSc Psychology student at the University of Warwick in England. She aspires to write for ...

My debate, against constitutional law professor Stewart Jay, went very well: It was, I hope, both entertaining and enlightening. Curiously, Prof. Jay insisted on repeating that my arguments boiled down to policy disagreements and “rhetorical flourishes.” He also accused me of asking courts to make policy rather than defer to Congress’s constitutional powe...

hemoccult-positive stool and hemoglobin 6.2 gm/dL and symptomatic anemia
requiring RBC transfusions. She underwent upper and lower GI

If you can’t fight and you can’t flee, flow. – Robert Eliot
Too often, we men have lived with a single answer to every situation: win. We saw our friendships in competitive terms, so we couldn’t let our guard down. We looked at life as a challenge to be conquered rather than something to be enjoyed. Therefore, our first impulse was to fight and come out a winner. Many of us have played life like a game with only winners and losers, and we have neglected the deeper meaning in our experiences. Living that way, many of us have felt like losers.
We all experience moments when a situation is much more powerful than we are. Those moments feel like defeat unless we allow them to open a whole new viewpoint on our lives. When we can flow with a situation, which will have it...

If so, time to celebrate! Today starts 2010 Brain Awareness Week (opens website with calendar of activities and resources).
First of all, please take the time to say Hello to the new neurons that are being generated in your brain every single day. This morning you’ll have some “baby neurons” that weren’t there last night, thanks to lifelong neurogenesis. Then, consider, how will you put them to good use and help them thrive over time? To guide you here, Dr. Deb summarized the gist of 10 Habits of Highly Effective Brains:

Use it or lose it.
Take care of your nutrition.
Exercise your brain and your body. They nourish each other.
Practice positive thoughts until they become your default mindset.
Thrive on learning and mental challenges.
Aim high and keep learning.

On the last day of 2009, I thought I would share (just like just about everyone else) a little bit about what I was blogging about during the past year. Here goes nothing:
January: "Hello everyone! Fancy seeing all of you here."

My first blog here at Diabetes Daily was last January. I can't believe it's been a year already!
February: "Six years ago tonight, I almost died. Today is my diabetic anniversary."

February marks both my birthday and my diabetes anniversary. I can't believe this year I will have been diabetes for seven years! I am definitely one of the newer members of the club, but I am remembering less and less of life before diagnosis.
March: “Excuse me?” said the elderly voice behind me. “Is that a microphone you’re wearing?”

Probably one my my favorite 'mistaken pump...

Today is the first Monday in October, and so is First Monday, the traditional start of the Supreme Court term. The Court already heard one argument – in the Citizens United campaign finance case — but it had been carried over from last year, so it doesn’t really count.
In any event, continuing its trend from last term, the Court has further front-loaded its caseload — with nearly 60 arguments on its docket already. Fortunately, unlike last year, we’ll see many blockbuster cases, including:

the application of the Second Amendment to state gun regulations;
First Amendment challenges to national park monuments and a statute criminalizing the depiction of animal cruelty;
an Eighth Amendment challenge to life sentences for juveniles; a potential revisiting of ...

Some of you will know I’ve been striving to write my PhD proposal lately, ending up with loads more words than actually necessary! However, as part of it I’ve been reviewing some of the material I’ve collected over time on coping.
Coping is one of those difficult words - one we all know, but don’t always define especially well. One definition of coping is ‘purposeful efforts to manage the negative impact of stress’ – this one’s by Lazarus & Folkman. This definition suggests that coping involves active choices about what to do in the face of stress.
Wikipedia (o font of all knowledge) defines coping as ‘managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve personal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize, reduce o...

What is your biggest challenge to productivity and how do you overcome it? (671) That is the question we asked a number of bloggers and here are their answers.

As a student, I was a master of procrastination, running down the clock as long as I could before beginning a project. What resulted was strong work and ridiculous levels of self-induced pressure. (I suppose that’s the academic version of living on the edge.)
The strategy that I now like to call granularity helped me to overcome my tendency toward procrastination, by making it possible to see a large project as a matter of many smaller, more manageable tasks.

Last week I decided to challenge myself and cook only foods that I had in my pantry or in my freezer or fridge. I went to the grocery store early in the week for some perishables like milk, fruit and vegetables. Other than that, I only made foods that I had on hand. At first, I was a little nervous. Would we have enough? Once I took inventory of what I had on hand, I knew that we would be fine. I got a bunch of great suggestions from commenters. Everything from curry to pasta to soups. The first night, I was cooking for a whole bunch of us. I looked to see what I had on hand to feed a crowd and decided on spaghetti and turkey meatballs. The dinner was fantastic, easy to make, and I couldn't believe that we were able to feed all of...

Last night's dinner was amazing. A-ma-zing. I had some Andouille chicken sausages in the freezer downstairs that I had been wanting to use and some kidney beans and rice in the pantry. After our trip down to New Orleans this summer, I have been inspired by creole and cajun cooking. I didn't have everything for traditional red beans and rice, but I had enough to get me started.I looked up a red beans and rice recipe on the internet that was really easy to make and had the ingredients that I had on hand: canned kidney beans, tomatoes (totally taboo, but trust me they taste good!), Andouille chicken sausage, and a green pepper. Much to my surprise, I found a recipe that was highly rated on Allrecipes.com. Anyone that knows anything about Louisiana cooking k...

Last night, David went out to dinner with his father. So Leah and I decided to go to my parents house instead of cooking dinner for just ourselves. But I still managed to cook lunch for Leah and me before we went to Gymboree this afternoon. I had a box of pre-made Cuban black bean soup from Trader Joe's in the pantry which sounded yummy. I love Trader Joe's pre-made food. Usually I'm not a huge advocate of pre-made foods, but if I'm in a hurry, or am feeling lazy, I know that I can stop in Trader Joe's for an easy and typically healthy meal that's not expensive. So this afternoon we had some black bean soup. When I opened up the box to put it in the pan, I noticed that it was completely pureed. I wanted more of a texture, so I added one of the cans ...

I decided to use one of my frozen, organic chickens for dinner last night. I defrosted it in the refrigerator the other day and decided to use the lemons in my fridge and some fresh thyme from the garden. Cooking it in the oven last night made my house smell really great and the taste was perfect. When I roast a chicken, I have several approaches that I'll take. Sometimes I'll brine the chicken beforehand, and sometimes I'll just pop it in the oven and baste it from time to time. One recipe that I do love is Ina Garten's. But I thought it would be fun to change her recipe up a bit. Instead of stuffing the chicken with the aromatics, I decided to chop them all up and rub them on top. The result was tons of wonderful flavor and a moist, juicy b...

... and second, and third, and fourth...

You get the idea!
To be totally honest with all of you, one of the biggest barriers to my exercise routine is my love for good TV! It is hard to exercise when you can't don't want to move away from the screen. I live in a very small apartment (in a great location) so a treadmill or elliptical machine in here is not going to happen.
However, last night I discovered a new feature in my WiiFit. There is a program called "free step", where I can set up the amount of time in advance and then change the channel. Instead of watching Mii, I can watch normal TV. The Wii remote acts as a metronome to help me keep in step. I stepped up and down, and up and down, and up and... well, down while watching Saving Grace. 20 minutes felt like n...

The second thing I will think of from now on is the Diabetes Daily Challenge. Never one to shy away from competition, I was excited to hear about the lastest activity on the Diabetes Daily forum. David has invited us all to make take up a Diabetes Daily Challenge.
In August, the basic challenge is to "put on your workout clothes at least four days a week and move for 10 minutes or more. Don't skip more than one day in a row." People are definitely putting their own spin on the challenge and some have taken up food challenges instead.
Instead of the 10 minutes, I am challenging myself to work out for 30 minutes at least 4 days a week. I am hoping to also lose 4 lbs by the end of the m...

On October 3, 2009 at 11:00 am mothers and children at sites across Canada, the United States and other countries will compete to set the record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. The winners of the competition will be the site with the most children breastfeeding at one site, the country with the most children breastfeeding at registered sites and in North America the region (province or territory or state) with the most children participating as a percentage of the birth rate.
Assessing Depression in the Context of Life

What is the difference between having a short-term, emotional crisis, an adjustment disorder, and long-term clinical depression? Well, in the hands of a sloppy mental health professional, the answer might be “nothing” — all three might be diagnosed as “major depression.” But is this really sloppy diagnosis (or, as researchers would call it, a “diagnostic challenge”), or a simple result of how mental health is typically reimbursed in the U.S.?
Researchers Monroe & Reid (2009) argue that clinicians and researchers need to do a better job in evaluating depression in context of a person’s life stress. Without doing so, they argue “one cannot determine whether or not the presenting condition represents an understandable response to adve...

This weekend has been a very social weekend. Visited two ladies, each of them with her own story. Both were seniors. Because of mothers day, my friend nr 2. and I went to see the Keukenhof. We had a gorgeous day !!! The weather was sunny, temperatures were great and it was sooo nice to see all those flowerbeds! Thoughts about autism-mothersHaving a child with autism is such a challenge for a mum. The child needs so much extra care and such an intensive support mum often can feel like a battery discharging. The battery of mum’s energy simply can not be empty, because there is no one else who can take over her job as mother.I deeply respect my own mum J. who has raised me up to the woman I am now. It is so important for the mothers of today’s young children to get a diagnose. This may no...

I’ve been up to my ears in sorting and cataloging the abundant entries we received for this year’s DiabetesMine Design Challenge, which closed for submissions last Friday. So much so that I haven’t had time to think about — or write about — much else. A quick numerical overview of the outpouring of creativity we’ve [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Last month, I warned that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals would soon be handing the school choice movement a legal setback. Well, it’s here.
As expected, the 9th Circuit has reinstated a lower court challenge to Arizona’s scholarship donation tax credit program. The program allows taxpayers to contribute to non-profit Scholarship Tuition Organizations (STOs) that provide financial assistance to families choosing private schools. The taxpayers can then claim a dollar for dollar credit for their donation.
While this ruling leaves the program intact for the time being, it would almost surely require the tax credit program to be amended if it is allowed to stand. Fortunately, as I noted in my earlier post, the 9th Circuit is overturned as often as a caber at the Highland Games....

Next-generation technologies are exploding so rapidly in genomics and personalized medicine that the NIH want to help jump-start experiments that will answer some of the bioethical concerns that rose along with the era.

More than 200 grants could receive up to $1 million each from the stimulus funds that were earmarked for the National Institutes of Health’ Challenge Grants program.
Ten bioethics-focused programs address issues relating to the commerce of direct-to-consumer genetic tests; ethical issue posed by nanomedicine, tissue engineering and similar emerging technologies; and informed consent issues as medical records become electronic.
Genomics becomes an even hotter topic as the NIH requests for more advances and developments of new methods and technologies. The wa...

Your answer?
The follow-up question: is your job and life more similar to the constant problem-solving and mental challenge of the cab driver, or to the routine or the bus driver?
Pascale wrote an excellent article on this, check it out: Brain Plasticity - How learning changes your brain.

permitted for diagnosis of BAC (which has increased the numbers of
those tumors classified as "adenocarcinoma with BAC-like areas). I
think at this point in time the more difficult distinction is between

A while back, Amy asked me if I would be willing to participate in the video announcement for this contest; of course I readily agreed! I strongly believe that huge strides in diabetes management could be made by improving the design of current medical devices, without necessarily requiring huge improvements in the medical technology itself. (Although, I would love to see some diabetes products that don't require expensive and high maintenance disposable parts. And of course a super-accurate, noninvasive blood glucose meter is the holy grail!)View the video below, and check out the rules at the official contest page. There are top-notc...

Talking about dieting and hunger in the same sentence somehow doesn’t seem right.
But what if you could lose weight and help feed the hungry at the same time?
That’s the idea behind a new campaign created by General Mills, NBC’s The Biggest Loser and the non-profit organization Feeding America.
It’s called the Pound for Pound Challenge because, for ever pound you lose, General Mills will donate 10 cents to Feeding America. That’s enough, apparently, to provide one pound of groceries to a local food bank.
Imagine all those 10 cents added together - just think of how many pounds of groceries Feeding America could provide for those without food.

All you have to do is take the pledge, start dieting (and of course exercising) and watch your lost pounds convert...

Learning & the Brain is a conference that gets marked on my calendar annually because I always return home having either been exposed to new information, or with a new perspective on an old topic. Last month’s conference in Cambridge, MA, themed Using Emotions Research to Enhance Learning & Achievement, was no exception. As with previous conferences, in addition to the many keynote sessions, I focused on the adult learning strand, since so much of my time is spent providing professional development for, and collaborating with adults. Here are five conference cues as they relate to education.
1. CHALLENGE YOURSELF WITH NEW LEARNING

Brain Fitness at New York Public Library:

Ever live in a place where you know the water is not safe to drink? Where you even use bottled water to clean your teeth? I have and I’ve got to say it’s not fun. I lived in Saudi Arabia for a year and was reliant on bottled water for drinking, cooking, and yes, cleaning my teeth.
But while I found it annoying, at least I did have access to clean water which is more that millions of people around the world have.
The World Health Organizations (WHO) says…
“…1.1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. Unsafe water and inadequate sanitation kills nearly TWO MILLION people each year, mostly children under the age of five.”
That’s way too many people without clean drinking water.
Want to help out? Take the Clean Water Challenge Quiz…

~ La Leche League co-founder Betty Wagner Spandikow passed away last weekend. She served as Executive Director of LLL for many years, and I was particularly impressed by this about her:
Betty initiated flex hours and a family-friendly workplace in the ’60s, long before they became the popular perks they are today. Business hours at the La Leche League International office were set to allow mothers to be home with their children after school. Betty’s ideas about work teams and home offices were also far ahead of their time.
Keep in mind that year-end donations to LLL are being matched by generous donors, so it would be a lovely tribute to Betty to make a donation in her honor.

A recent CNN article explains well why a growing number of companies use brainteasers and logic puzzles of a type called “guesstimations” during job interviews:
- "Seemingly random questions like these have become commonplace in Silicon Valley and other tech outposts, where companies aren't as interested in the correct answer to a tough question as they are in how a prospective employee might try to solve it. Since businesses today have to be able to react quickly to shifting market dynamics, they want more than engineers with high IQs and good college transcripts. They want people who can think on their feet."
What are technology companies (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) and consulting companies (McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Accenture...) looking for? They want employees w...

A couple of recent studies have reinforced the lifelong potential for brain plasticity (the ability of the brain to rewire itself through experience) and the importance of physical exercise for cognitive vitality. One study focused on 1) adults over 50 with mild cognitive impairment, the other one on 2) stroke survivors.
1) Memory problems: Adults 50-years-old and over with mild cognitive impairment (an advanced form of memory problems, but pre-dementia) were asked to exercise for three 50-minute sessions per week for 24 weeks (a total of 60 hours). Results: there were small, but measurable, cognitive benefits even 18 months after the start of the program (around a year after the supervised exercise activities ended).

It’s happening this weekend.
The 2008 Pan-Mass Challenge.
What it is:
The Pan-Massachusetts Challenge raises money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through an annual bike-a-thon that crosses the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Why I’m involved:
This is Dr. Sam Blackman, and with him is Miss Rebecca Hopkins.
We know Sam as Blog, MD.
Rebecca knows Sam because he is her oncologist.
Every year, Sam rides in the Pan-Mass Challenge to raise funds for pediatric oncology research. It’s a cause I have been honored to support since Sam first emailed me about it a few years ago.
This year, Sam won’t be riding. He has a new location and a new job in cancer drug development.
But Rebecca will be riding in his place, in memory of and fo...

Medications have side effects and it can often feel like a revolving door trying to find one (or a combination of a few) that work for any particular person. And while medications’ side effects are well-publicized, few articles are written about the potential “side effects” of other types of treatments, such as psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy can be a powerful treatment for everything ranging from depression and attention deficit disorder, to anxiety and panic attacks. And while there are many different forms of psychotherapy, virtually all of them share the challenges discussed in this article.

I wasn’t exactly sure what constituted a “Personal Brand” so I started today’s activity by trying to figure it out. I found Michele’s Martin’s post on Building Your Online Brand: Start with the Message. She looked at two aspects, a personal brand and the elements of your personal brand:
What Is a “Personal Brand”?

Both yesterday and today I forgot to put my pedometer on! But - I walked on a treadmill for 40 minutes both days. I think that counts for something!
I forget it because if I leave it in an obvious place for me to find it in the morning, then it is in a place that the cats will most likely find it at too. And I doubt at that point that it will be functional.
I’ll have to leave it somewhere else - I might miss a few steps with it though. (Source: Ideas For Women News Blog)

You might think you’re fit.
But are you ?
Find out with the President’s Challenge Adult Fitness Test.
It’s been designed by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, a group of volunteers who advise the government and ultimately the President about fitness, physical activity, and sports in the U.S.
It measures your aerobic fitness, muscular strength & endurance, flexibility, and body composition by having you…
Walk one mile or run 1.5 miles and log in your time.
Count the number of half sit-ups you can do in a minute.
Count the number of push-ups you can do in a minute.
Do a sit-and-reach flexibility test.
Measure your height, weight, and waist.
The results are then entered and an evaluation and tips for improvement will be done.

For National Women’s Health Week I want to focus on things you can do to prevent illness and stay healthy - or even reverse some health problems you already have. Today - the topic is cardiovascular exercise.
Cardiovascular exercise - also known as aerobic exercise - is important for heart health. It is exercise that uses your large muscles like your legs and makes your heart and lungs stronger and can help to lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels
Walking, running, jogging, bicycling, jump-roping, and swimming are all examples of cardiovascular exercises you can do outside. If you want (or have to) exercise inside using a treadmill, stationary bicycles or elliptical trainer are some options.
To give your heart a good workout you need to make sure that you do your ca...

The Quintessence Foundation plans the 8th annual Breastfeeding Challenge, scheduled this year for October 11, 2008. Basically it’s a friendly competition to promote breastfeeding:
This fun event is a challenge for which geographic area (province, state or territory) has the most breastfeeding babies, as a percentage of the birthrate, “latched on” at 11am local time.
Last year’s event involved 5,383 babies at 230 sites across Canada and the United States! Registration is open now for this year’s event. Visit the Breastfeeding Challenge 2008 invitation for more information.

Since this is National Women’s Health Week I’m going to make some of my posts related to it this week.
I decided to try the ‘WOMAN Challenge’ too! I mentioned this in my last post. The goal or ‘challenge’ is to try to walk 10,000 steps or get 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day. It lasts for 8 weeks. And you ‘walk’ a virtual path across the U.S. as you do it.
It was supposed to start Sunday, on Mother’s Day, but since I was out of town visiting I wasn’t able to walk much. I did get out my pedometer and got it working right (I hadn’t really used it yet although I’ve had it for a while). As it was later in the day I was only able to get about 800 steps counted on it. That should make it easie...

So it’s my turn to report my results from the Vitality Compass Quiz, and let me tell you, I was not anxious to take that thing at first. I figured you’d have to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jessica Alba to score even decently on it, but after reading Liz’s results, I was encouraged. A real person who does not spend the bulk of her day in a gym and who probably noshes on a carb or two once in a while? If Liz could score well, so could I, right?
Well, turns out Liz is on track to last a bit longer than I’m predicted to, but I’ll still live a long life it seems. Naturally, by kicking up my fruit and veggie consumption and actually removing my rear form this chair to sneak in some exercise, I can add more years to my life. Hmm. I can do that. I need to do ...

Neuroplasticity is defined as "the ability of the brain to rewire itself through experience".
We typically summarize a lot of brain research by encouraging SharpBrains readers is to seek for novelty, variety and challenge, as guidelines for "brain exercise" that will help build new connections in the brain, force one to be mindful and pay attention, improve abilities such as pattern-recognition, and in general contribute to lifelong brain health.
A friend just sent an update on her amazing experience in Namibia (the pic on the right shows the entrance to the University of Namibia) that shows how Travel and Engagement with meaningful projects can provide superb mental stimulation, or "brain exercise". This is relevant at all ages, and we are encouraged to ...

Quotes from a great article, Professor, 81, proves brain stays young:
- In 1960, Diamond became the first female faculty member in Cal's science department, achieving full professorship in 1974. She still teaches anatomy with her 81st birthday two weeks away.
- Diamond, a professor of anatomy at UC Berkeley, determined that the brain can stay young through stimulation, which can be achieved through her five-point plan: diet, exercise, challenge, newness and tender loving care.
- Using her plan, how is she challenged?
- "Every student who sits in that chair," she said, pointing across the desk in her fifth-floor office in the Life Sciences Building on campus. "They come in here asking questions, and you better have the answers."
- What newness, then, is in her life?

Some good advice if faced with aging parent/s - good tips to consider:Keep your family member in their home as long as you can. Get finances in order. Find out about veteran's benefits and others from a good elder layer. If you're the relative of a caregiver, support them and ask how they are -- not just the person who is ill. Respect the fact it is the toughest job in the world to care for someone you love when they are declining.Their is no greater gift a child can give their parent than to be there to walk them home to the other side. It's something you never regret. I was there when my mom took her last breath.. I held her tightly whispering, "you brought me in to this world, I'm here for your exit." A bitter sweet moment - one that I will never forget. Look into home care, and senior c...

Filed under: Type 1, Daily News, SupportAmong the best restaurants in Tallahassee, Florida, is Kool Beanz Cafe, where both the eats and the atmosphere are colorful, inventive and fun. That Kool Beanz inventiveness now extends to pastry chef Kim Bertron (pictured), whose design for a syringe won her first prize in the History Channel's "Invent Now Challenge" in March. Today's Tallahassee Democrat profiles Bertron and talks to her about her winning entry, the SimpleShot syringe. The SimpleShot can be preloaded with both a drug, in powdered form, and a diluting solution. The two substances are stored in separate compartments of the syringe until a dose is required. Then the user needs only to press the plunger, piercing the membrane separating drug from solution and - presto! - it's ready to g...

I've had a busy week. I've knocked out 2 1/2 days of staff development -- all on Wed Mastering topics. Tuesday, the first day, made me remember just how tired I get in staff development. Sitting still all day is hard work when you are used to running around the room. I am also working on test development for my district. That's also stressful, but getting better. I'm using a new style of insertion set -- clinical trial, and am having erratic blood sugars, but it could be the heat, the workshops, the stress from different work, or the phases of the moon. My Fitness4Diabetics workouts are still going well, and also my food intake. I've lost 15 pounds now, and I think I'm also starting to notice. I'm up to 25 minutes of straight walking, w...

In a previous post, I noted that Jack Gallant had issued a Neural Prediction Challenge. Now, we have another challenge, this time from the Gerstner lab:Here is our Challenge, open to everybody in in neural modeling, machine learning, or similar fields: - Is it possible to predict the timing of every spike that a neuron emits with 2 ms precision? - Is it possible to predict the subthreshold membrane potential with a precision of 2 mV for arbitrary input?Annotated training data and test stimuli from severalcells under different stimulation conditions are availableat http://icwww.epfl.ch/~gerstner/QuantNeuronMod2007/challenge.htmlImportant dates * Data set available by March 16. * Participants must submit their prediction by June 1st. * Winner announced around June 10 . * W...
