No one gives you a warranty after breast cancer treatment and tells you you’re cured. Personally I don’t think very much about a breast cancer recurrence. It does come to mind now and then, but it doesn’t worry me much and for that I am grateful; I have enough to worry about. I know it is something that is possible and I also know that many breast cancer survivors worry about this a lot. Their fear isn’t unfounded, but neither should it be all consuming. Chances are you will not get another bout of breast cancer. The part I don’t like is that no one and nothing can guarantee that. So we worry. Some of us a lot and some of us a little.
We can get statistics from our doctor of our risk and we can also try to compare ourselves with other women who have battled th...

I’m waiting. Waiting for the telephone to ring. Even though I expect it, I’m sure that the sound will startle me and I’ll jump.
When the call comes it will be to let me know that she’s dead. My niece will be dead.
She is/was 25 years old. I can’t wrap my mind around it even though I’ve known since Sunday that she would die this week.
She had a car accident in the very early hours of Sunday morning. She hit black ice and shot over a bridge and slid 60 feet into a tree. She never awoke again. She has been in a coma with her brain bleeding. Her eyeballs burst this morning. In a few hours, she will be unhooked from the life support system...

Today while looking at cnn.com, I came across interesting new alternative technique for the prevention of depression called “Compassion Meditation”. The method was inspired by Tibetan Buddhists, specifically the Dalai Lama, who is now an associate professor at Emory University in Atlanta where the new meditation process is being studied.
Dr. Charles Raison, of Emory University, says the idea behind compassion meditation is that “our perceptions of other people are flawed” and that “we tend naturally to see some people as friends and other people as enemies and a whole bunch of people in the middle who are sort of non-entities”. The theory is that those people in the middle become important later on. Raison uses the example; “if you aren’t married yet, a stranger is your...

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Childhood, Adult Onset, Lifestyle, Research, MagazinesA recent study compared the sperm of 27 men with type 1 diabetes to the sperm of 29 men of equal age without diabetes.
The researchers found that the sperm of the men with diabetes were healthy in many respects. The shape and abundance of the sperm from type 1 diabetic males were perfectly normal and apparently they were great swimmers. However, when the DNA was examined, there was more damage to the DNA of the diabetic men. Around 52% of the DNA in their sperm cells was fragmented, compared to only 32% in the men without diabetes. There was also a higher rate of deletions in the DNA inside their mitochondria, separate DNA found within each cell. The results of this study suggest type 1 diabetes may cause d...
