Nurses are expected to be super-humanly objective and non-judgmental. As this honest post from Nu...

I once worked with a psychiatrist who called listening the most underrated skill, and his words are truer now than ever. Listening is hard work; too often, we just wait for our turn to talk. And that’s if we’re being polite. We don’t talk to each other; we talk at each other or sometimes over each other in the loudest voice possible.
Dr. Elaine Schattner of Medical Lessons is the host for this week’s Grand Rounds. It’s the “customer service in healthcare” edition. You can read this week’s edition here. Learning about medicine is a lifelong endeavor whether you’re a patient, a doctor, a caregiver, a hospital administrator or, perhaps, even an insurance company executive.
Well, after a long hiatus, I'm finally hosting Change of Shift once again, and I'm happy to do so from the comfort of our new home here in Santa Fe, New Mexico! For those readers who are new to Digital Doorway, my wife and I sold our home in Massachusetts last summer, sold or gave away most of our things, bought an RV, and have been traveling the country for seven months and almost 10,000 miles in search of a new place to call home. For the moment, we've settled (perhaps temporarily, perhaps not) here in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and you can read about our travels here. That said, this episode of Change of Shift (that most venerable of nursing blog carnivals) will be peppered with photographs from around northern New Mexico for no other reason than the fact that they're nice to look at, entertai...

Welcome to the Funky Heart edition of Grand Rounds, featuring the latest and greatest medical writing! This week’s submissions cover a nice mix of issues important to health and medicine, which I’m presenting in alphabetical order (excuse my somewhat ultra-conservative ways, as I’m originally a product of the Mayo Clinic, and even after jumping ship nearly five years ago, I’m still affected due to my unchanged, self-inflicted physical location — I’ll find my social-media legs soon, I’m sure!)
MD Whistleblower is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read this week’s edition here. It’s been a while since I’ve attended a conventional medical Grand Rounds. These were events where a medical luminary would fly in to give a medical audience a state-of-the-art presentation on a medical subject. Ideally, the speaker was a thought leader and a researcher on the issue. These presentations were usually not a demonstration of the virtue of humility. We physicians, as a class, have generous egos. Academic physicians occupy a higher rung on the ego ladder. Medical Grand Rounders (MGRs), who are on the GR speaking circuit, often must bring their own ladders to assure they will be able to reach their desired atmospheric height. …………………………………...

The ritual circle at change of shift. It’s called “giving report.” A photographer captured this image of student nurses standing at attention as they receive report from the off going shift. They are receiving report under the watchful eye of their instructor. Trust me. The students were quizzed about their patients after report. What the camera didn’t capture was the stampede of nurses running towards the elevator after their shift was over. It’s amazing how nurses catch their second wind when it’s time to go home.
Giving report to the next shift is an art and it can take years to acquire the proper technique. Giving report requires good communication skills, diplomacy, and a sense of humor. Unit comedians deliver the best report. They use their witty sense of humor to ...

The first edition for 2010 of Change of Shift, everyone's favorite nursing blog carnival, is up and running. I thought that I had submitted a post for this edition which is inaugurating the new year and new decade, but alas, I didn't make it this time. Still, there's plenty to read over there, so enjoy! We look forward to the years to come and look backwards, pondering our triumphs and tragedies. And, if you are anything like me, you might also look behind the dryer for that missing sock. In late December, the tradition is also to formalize our best intentions for the future, even if we know the process is futile. Though considered nearly a pointless exercise, with failure resulting in an even worse state than before we started, we make these resolutions annually. So, onto the blogs, grouped according to some of the classic New Year’s resolution themes. ………………………………….. Kim, Emergiblog, is the host of t...

Today I have the priviledge of hosting my first edition of Change of Shift, the blog carnival set up and run by Kim from Emergiblog, and designed to showcase nursing related blogs throughout the blogosphere.

Its been a busy couple of weeks with hosting our very own EMS/ER carnival ‘The Handover’, then Grand Rounds, so I thought why not round it off with Change of Shift!!
So, whats it doing here, I hear you all ask? Whats nursing got to do with Medic999 and Paramedicine and emergency care?
First, I will deal with my bit. I qualified as a registered nurse in 1995 and practiced for 5 years before turning my hand to pre-hospital care. I have seen both sides of the coin, in hospital and out of hospital healthcare and I truly feel that my nursing background has given me a valuable i...

No, not saving lives!
Blog carnivals…..Who’s idea was it to host three carnivals in three weeks then???
Im working on Change of Shift for Thursday at the moment, so my usual blogging is taking a back step tonight.
Talking about Change of Shift though, it’s looking decidedly short of nurse/nursing related stories from an EMS perspective.
A couple of my esteemed EMS colleagues have sent in submission to join the Change of Shift family, but wheres the rest of you then??
I will accept submissions right up until 8pm Wednesday night (GMT), so get those fingers typing and lets embrace this opportunity to share our experiences (good, bad or indifferent) with our nursing, medical and allied health professional colleagues. (Source: Medic999)

Having no team to manage is often a blessing. I have to admit that I have had very few people reporting to me who have been troublesome, and the stories I hear from colleagues about the workshy, the incompetent, the people discovered working while off sick and so on are just that. I have had a few difficult staff; one who tended to cry during our one to ones without good reason, one who appeared to do little work and hated to be challenged about why this was the case and another when I was a district nurse who couldn’t understand why 4 inch heels might not have been a good idea. Dealing with people in these situations can be tricky, and what is more managing poor performance in the NHS doesn’t seem to be easily resolved – there is a balance of power that appears to lean m...

Kim birthed Emergiblog four years ago, and like one of my blogger colleagues said in a recent email, she is a force to be reckoned with. Emergiblog is on the top of many lists of the best health, medicine and nursing blogs, and Kim has strengthened her spot as a top blogger by creating the inimitable and widely recognized Change of Shift, a blog carnival devoted---but not limited---to all things nursing. This is simply a moment to reflect on the gifts that Kim has given to the world with her passion for writing, blogging, Health 2.0 and nursing, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart for all she has done to advance our collective cause. Happy Birthday, Kim and Emergiblog---...

Captain Atopic is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read it here. He calls it the “Grand Rounds 5:45 - Le Tour de France Edition!” Where Grand Rounds is the Grand Tour of Medical Blogging, the Grand tour of Cycling is undoubtedly Le Tour de France, which concluded on Sunday in Paris. After three weeks of cycling, nearly 3,500km at an average speed above 40km/h, the peleton will ride up Paris' Champs Elysee's to the finish. Throughout the race, certain riders and teams will have reached their goals, revealed their future potential and achieved great triumphs. This week's Grand Rounds features some sterling examples of writing, all capable of Stage Victories, and some, much more. Welcome to the Tour... (photo credit) The latest edition of Change of Shift (...

Change of Shift, nursing blog carnival extraordinaire, is celebrating it's third birthday and the beginning of it's fourth year of publication. I am honored that Bob the Nurse is once again featured in this week's edition, and perhaps Bob will receive more invitations to travel the country from this continued exposure. Speaking of Bob, please stop by his blog and check out his latest adventures in Hawaii. He leaves for Arkansas soon, so new travels and destinations await, and he will no doubt pop up on Change of Shift regularly! (Source: Digital Doorway)

Three years ago, Kim, the queen of nursing blogs (as she has become know to us)came up with the most wonderful of ideas. Why not share blog posts written by nurses and others involved in healthcare across the world? As the world becomes an ever smaller place it has become apparent that while our health systems are different, many of the issues we face as nurses are very similar. Those similarities aren’t just that our patients have the same kind of problems, or that they concern us, irritate us and amuse us in the same way, but also that the professional issues we face are often similar. We all face an aging population of not just patients, but also nurses. We all have to consider the extent to which nursing boundaries can be pushed, the extent to which we celebrate the meaning of ...

Dr Edwin Leap is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read it here. Great edition!Today is June 30, 2009. Which means, if I’m correct, that tomorrow is July 1st. And July 1st is the day that, all across the country, recent medical school graduates begin residencies in their assorted specialties. An amazing time, indeed! I remember it well. Standing around in a suit, listening to lectures, trying to figure out who was really smart and who was more like me. None of us knowing, by a long-shot, what we were embarking upon. The latest edition of Change of Shift (Vol 3, No 26) is hosted by ReHabRN! You can find the schedule and the COS archives at Emergiblog. Welcome to the June 25, 2009 edition of Change of Shift. Many thanks to Kim at emergiblog for allowing me to host this edition.'Ti...

I hope you enjoy your weekly medblog binge! I’ve chosen to present this week’s rounds without a theme, although a suggested topic for those with blogger’s block was “best (or worst) experience with inservice training, clinical education or CME”. All submissions have been included, with the best (in my highly subjective judgement) featured. Here at Nursing Handover I’ve been displaying some of the interesting images available under the Creative Commons licenses with posts. For me, this theme was prompted by the fact that I have been a patient blogger for almost a year now, was diagnosed with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis almost a year ago to the day, and am finishing my second year of graduate school in a few weeks. When I think about the way life used to be, I automatically think about change, and the myriad ways in which my life has changed over the past few years. Based on all of the submissions I received, this theme seemed to strike a chord. Here is w...

In the days leading up to hosting this edition of Change of Shift, I gave a great deal of thought to the phenomena of the internet, blogging, Twitter, iPhones, Facebook, and the many technological advances that now keep us all connected and communicating. That said, as much as I love these manifestations of our Digital Age, I also see these forums as proverbial fish bowls in which we all stew ourselves in the waters of public communication, often rendering ourselves vulnerable and naked as the observing masses watch our every move.Over on Twitter, many of us now communicate in a "micro-blogging" format, using 140-word posts to get our message across to our myriad "followers". Twitter is, for all intents and purposes the newest digital fish bowl, and as more and more of us jump into the wate...

Change of Shift, the blog carnival of all things nursing, has a new edition available for your reading pleasure over at Emergiblog. Kim, the blogger extraordinaire who birthed Change of Shift, diligently keeps it going when guest hosts are not available.
Barbara, In Sickness and In Health, is this week's host of Grand Rounds. The theme began as “connections” and organized into sci-fi films. You can read this excellent edition here (phto credit). The (optional) theme I suggested for this Grand Rounds was connections -- connections among people, groups, ideas, opinions, facts, devices, places, events, just about anything. ……….. One area of connection that has fascinated me for decades is the realm of science fiction films. Sci-fi films connect the past, the present, and the future; our darkest fears and loftiest hopes; the devastation humans cause and the healing we bring; the divine and the utterly outrageous. Here's a confession. For the past twenty seven years I have attended the annual 24 hour science fiction film f...

CRZEGRL, a venerable blogger and courageous flight nurse, is hosting this week's Change of Shift, the blog carnival of all things nursing. It's certainly worth a perusal, even if you only have time to read one or two entries. Blog carnivals are an amazing phenomenon, in that they are online magazines bursting with content and connections to blogs you might otherwise never find on your own (at least not all at the same time). Why evolution and medicine, you may ask? Why now? Well, in anticipation of the new year, of course; 2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On The Origin of Species, and the one thing that just doesn’t get as much recognition as it should is the role of evolutionary biology in both research and clinical medicine. The Christmas edition of Change of Shift (Vol 3, No 13) is now up over at Nurse Ratched's Place ! It’s a grand ed...

This article from the American College of Surgeons' monthly newsmagazine Surgery News pricked my interest. Dr Ernest Block, director of the trauma program at Orlando Regional Medical Center, tries to make a case for the "regionalization" of acute care surgery. In English, this means he wants to justify life-flighting acute appendicitis and hot gallbladders out of surrounding community hospital ER's and depositing them at the doorstep of the glorious Orlando Level I Trauma Center. Dr. Block rationalizes this proposed plundering with an economic argument. then check out this post (Inexorable Trend) by Movin’ Meat as he continues the dialogue I can't add much to Buckeye's commentary -- it's dead-on. This is a play for dollars and training cases, and completely unjustified from ...

If you are a blogger or read blogs often, you know that there are a good number of excellent blog carnivals focused on specific themes. If you are interested in medicine, you know what carnival to visit. Education, the same. Biology, neuroscience, nursing, birds, aging, philosophy...a variety of topics are very well covered in the blogosphere.
What you probably haven't come across is a high-quality "metacarnival" or "carnival of carnivals", where you can read the best blog posts ACROSS topics, subjects, disciplines.
This is why a few blog carnival "organizers" are launching next Monday a monthly rotating "MetaCarnival" to feature the most interesting posts from a variety of high-quality blog carnivals.
Participating blog carnivals so far, alphabetica...

Welcome to Change of Shift. Nursing school is hard work. We all had our good days and our bad days, but we somehow made it through nursing school despite our bad hair days. Check out this picture. That’s me taking care of Snoopy back in 1977. Thank God I had my cap to cover that hideous perm! I got this picture out of my school yearbook. Pictures from yearbooks can do a couple of things. They can come back to haunt us as well as teach us about the history of the nursing profession. The following photographs come from yearbooks from my personal collection. Come join me for Be True to Your School Week at Change of Shift.

Yeah, it’s finally up!
The list of topics for BlogWorld09 is up!
I voted already! Go ahead and vote now - choose eight topics you would like to see.
***
How to vote:
1. Click on “Comment” at the bottom of the poll.
2. Click on the “Vote” tab. You should then be able to pick your eight topics.

The eleventh topic, Networking Outside the Medical Blogosphere, could not be added to the list, but you can still vote for it by sending me a comment or an email and I’ll keep track.
Voting goes on until the end of November
The list has been placed in random order to avoid any personal bias on my part.

I know, I know.
The actual theme of this week’s Grand Rounds over at Applequack.com is “The Sound of Music”.
But how could I resist a reason to use a photo of THE Apple on the blog?
After all, Dr. Cris writes about Apple and medical stuff, right?
And besides, I have a horrible confession to make.
“The Sound of Music” is not one of my favorite movies.
I’ve tried, really, I’ve tried.
Hubby says it’s because it doesn’t star Jeff Goldblum and/or Will Smith.
Yeah, right!

Welcome to pulp fiction week at Change of Shift. I want to thank Kim from Emergiblog for allowing me to serve as host. You may think that Dr. Duane is obsessed with his nurse, but I think the good doctor is obsessed with blogging. He’s just leaning into his nurse so he can tell her about his latest post. Or not. Everyone has an obsession. If you’re familiar with Emergiblog, you know that Kim is obsessed with Star Bucks coffee, rock and roll music, and giving excellent patient care. Check out Kim’s call to arms. She’s mad as heck, and she wants nurses to start taking back the nursing profession.
It seems like a lot of people are having delusions. Doctor Sarah Reagan thought that people didn’t like her because she was a woman and a doctor. Little did she know that is was all in...

If you don’t know by now, I really love old pulp fiction nursing books. My favorite books are the original Harlequin Romance books. Take this one for example. Meet Dr. Luke Spencer. No, he’s not related to the Luke Spencer from General Hospital. Dr. Spencer may own his own hospital, but he really needs to modernize his healthcare facility. Maybe he can start by buying latex gloves. Those look pretty gross. Dr. Spencer and his friends are going to stop by Nurse Ratched’s Place for the next Change of Shift on September 4th. Please send in your submission to motherjonesrn AT yahoo Dot Com by September 2nd. I want to hear from you!

Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt Grand Rounds.
I hope Will shall pardon my paraphrase of Hamlet’s words in Act II, scene ii.
Hamlet totally rocks, as does Teresa at Rural Doctoring for the Shakespeare theme of this week’s Grand Rounds!
And just for the record, Lawrence Olivier gives the best performance of Hamlet I’ve ever seen ( with all due respect to Kenneth Branagh), although the critics of Olivier’s time disagree with me.
I wonder what Zippy thinks?

Ever wonder what we did before the internet?
You’re looking at it.
The Dewey Decimal System.
If you have to look it up, you’re too young to remember it.
Let’s put it this way: it gave Kerri at Six Until Me a nightmare.
A nightmare that became the theme for this week’s Grand Rounds!
Melvil Dewey would be proud!

Welcome to the May Day edition of Change of Shift where we will be exploring the different origins of this day across the world and what is more linking (sometimes tenuously) to some great nursing (and medical) blogs along the way. Sean from Nurse Sean (dot) com set the bar extremely high in the last edition with his tour around Europe, so lets see if we can go some way to matching his standards (do you sense a competitive edge here?)

There are two distinct themes or origins for May Day which will become clear in the fullness of time, and it gives me the chance to start off with some of the more light hearted and frivolous stories that I have to share with you and then to move onto the more serious and thought provoking.

Did you know that May Day (1st May) has been celebrated since ancie...

What more can you ask for when you are taking a day’s rest from work? Nurse Sean, who hosting Change of Shift this week, is the answer to a girl’s prayers as not only does he have some great posts this week, but he does it through the medium of travel. I am happy to say I have visited a few of the places he features, but certainly not all. Lets hope on his part he gets the chance to do that travelling he would love. My advice Sean is 30 is a great age to take in the sights of Europe!

So lets do a time check - Star date, April 3 2008 and with Captain James T Kirk at the ready, Scottie ready to beam us up, nurse Chapel in the sick bay with Mr spock and his fellow vulcans it is time to get over to Nurse Ratched’s Place for the latest Edition of change of Shift.
Whatever has happened to our roads? I am not referring here to the amount of traffic on them, though I certainly could have a bit of a moan about that, no I am talking about holes here. This morning I dropped teen son at his friends’ so they could walk together in a social matey kind of way. This particular road is long and also subject to many road calming humps (but that is yet another road story) and now it also contains many (and I mean many) large pot holes. Onto the main road and again all of a sudden numerous holes seem to have appeared. On one roundabout I have to go round most mornings there are now so many holes it is a wonder I don’t actually sink down one of them. Our roads are fixed by the county council to whom we pay more than enough council tax, but while drivin...

Generally I have found wordpress.com to be a pretty good blogging host. It is simple and it is free. It can be very annoying when you want to sign up for particular services elsewhere (like those shoutbox things and one recent site that is meant to drive traffic) only to find that they don’t work here. But generally I am able to cope with those frustrations, after all this is simple and it’s free. But when you write a detailed post with loads of links, when you spend an hour when you should be doing something else deciding what to write and then tapping away on your computer it is very very and even another very frustrating when the post disappears into the ether with just the title of the post to let you know that it ever existed.
For some time I have been wondering about buyi...

Kim from Emergiblog has some great posts on the blog carnival, change of shift, this week so I suggest you get over there and take a look.

If it is nursing you are interested in or indeed if you are a nurse then you should also go over to Nursing Voices, the great online forum. There are some great discussions going on there! I find it a great place to find out about nursing across the world and of course to join the debate. (Source: Life in the NHS)

Well get yourself over to change of Shift. When I started blogging just over 2 years ago there weren’t that many nurse bloggers. Kim from Emergiblog and myself started around the same time and of course hers is now one of the top nursing blogs in the blogsphere. One of the best ways to get a view of the range of what is being written by nurses and about nurses can be found in the fortnightly blog carnival hosted by Kim. One of the great things for me is to find out about nursing in different specialties but also in different parts of the world. As in pretty much all areas of life, the English spoken in different places has different meanings and interpretations and that is true within nursing. I often need a dictionary of both words and acronyms to read some of the US nursing blogs, ...

This week’s edition of Change of shift, which you can read now over at Nurse Ratched’s Place contains some great posts, presented around a wild west theme. What is particularly great for me is discovering some new blogs that I hadn’t read before, and what is more learning some new stuff as well as being entertained. To think that 2 years ago I barely knew what a blog was, let alone that so many nurses, doctors and others were around sharing parts of their work and home lives with us.
At the beginning of next week I reach the milestone of 2 years as a blogger and boy has that time gone quickly. I have in the past started diaries at various times but have never carried them on, and I expected that this blog would become another short term attempt. Instead I have found that ...

This week’s edition of Change of shift is up at Nurse Ratched’s Place. This is a very special edition because Change of Shift is a whole year old. I personally would like to thank Kim from emergiblog for starting this wonderful Blog Carnival, and all of those people who have contributed such wonderful examples of nursing practice and health related stories through the year. I myself hosted last November, and found out how complicated it is to do so, but also how popular Change of Shift is. Hopefully now I am finished my Masters I will be able to contribute more, and perhaps host again in the near future!

While I have contributed posts sporadically, I have never taken on the task of hosting, and I salute all those who have done so, as well as those who contribute more consistently than I. If you wish to see the newest edition, which marks one year of this excellent venue for nurse bloggers, click here.Congratulations to Kim at Emergiblog for her accomplishments, and here's to many more years of nurse bloggers' voices being heard loud and clear.
