Here’s a new video game from Zombie Cow Studios that could help educate teenagers about sexual and reproductive health in a colorful way.
Elizabeth Boskey, Ph.D., About.com’s Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) guide, writes in her blog post entitled ”It’s Only A Game“:
When I first saw the announcement for Privates, I found the concept vaguely appalling — condom-hatted soldiers (privates) swarming into people’s body parts (privates) to shoot at all the nasty invaders one can find there. However, the second I watched the trailer I was instantly converted to a fan. Privates was clearly designed by people who were paying attention in sex-ed class. The epithelium looks like epithelium! There are bacteria that I can recognize from what I’ve ...

Rick Lane and Frederick Schiff struck a deal in which they will avoid criminal prosecution for an alleged scheme to artificially inflate financial results reported by Bristol-Myers Squibb
The former execs will pay a combined $400,000 to a shareholder settlement fund and, in return, criminal charges will be dropped under a deferred prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in New Jersey. The charges actually get tossed in 12 months if they stick to the deal, which was approved today by US District Court Judge Faith Hochburg, and stay out of trouble. Under the agreements, the men are barred from serving as a ceo or cfo of a public company for two years (read theSchiff deal and the Lane deal).
The government alleged the execs failed to tell investors that Bristol in 2000 and 2001 gave wh...

Lord, make me a channel for thy peace –
that where there is hatred, I may bring love –
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness –
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony –
that where there is error, I may bring truth –
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith –
that where there is despair, I may bring hope –
that where there are shadows, I may bring light –
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather –
to comfort than to be comforted –
to understand, than to be understood –
to love, than to be loved
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

For the past month, The Discovery Channel has been running on its web site a four-part series called ‘Understanding Female Sexual Desire.’ It has a CME label alongside the title - continuing medical education - although the network describes the programming as patient education. The sponsor is noted at the outset and it happens to be Boehringer Ingelheim, which tomorrow hopes to convince an FDA advisory panel to approve a pill to treat a disorder it calls female sexual dysfunction (see this).
The series explores Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, which is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and Discovery is careful to not mention any drug, including flibanserin, the Boehringer pill, since none is approved to treat the condition.
By Gene HealyMy DC Examiner column this week looks at the controversy surrounding the History Channel’s forthcoming miniseries, “The Kennedys,” starring Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes as JFK and Jackie. It’s controversial in large part because the producer is “24″’s Joel Surnow, who is cigar-buddies with Rush Limbaugh and an outspoken conservative:
The screenwriter, Stephen Kronish, insists that he’s “not out to destroy the sacred cow” of the JFK presidency. Too bad: In an age when Americans still periodically swoon for imperial presidents, a little sacred-cow tipping would be a public service.

It will be Earth Day in a few days. How will you celebrate? I caught the last half of Nostradamus 2012 on the The History Channel this weekend and was temporarily freaked out. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready for the world to end in a few years. This Earth Day, you’ll find me recycling paper, reusing old bottles and even unplugging my laptop so that I can relax and reboot by spending more time with Mother Nature. After all, it’s also almost Mother’s Day (May 9th, in case you were wondering).
Besides scaring me to be more environmentally-friendly, the show also got me thinking about the importance of appreciating the now and planning for the future; two concepts you’ll see intertwined in this week’s round up. However you celebrate the day, ...

"Sarah Palin's Alaska", set to air on TLC, is getting lots of attention, but not in a good way.
Remember “Drill, Baby, Drill!”? We’re guessing that The Discovery Network (which owns TLC, Planet Green, and the Discovery Channel) would like you to forget about it, given its recent $2 million contract with Alaska’s former Governor Sarah Palin. The rogue politician will host a reality TV series, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, about her home state, but it’s stirring up considerable controversy among animal rights and environmental groups.
Many activists disapprove of Palin, who is well-known for her pro-oil-drilling slogans and staunch support of aerial wolf hunting, being featured on a network known for health, wellness, and nature programming.

The 11th Step Guiding Prayer
Alcoholics Anonymous’ 11th Step – Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Lord, make me a channel for thy peace –
that where there is hatred, I may bring love –
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness –
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony –
that where there is error, I may bring truth –
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith –

that where there are shadows, I may bring light –
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather –

Fred Schiff, a former Bristol-Myers Squibb chief financial officer, won a federal appeals court ruling that limits the criminal fraud case brought against him by the U.S. Justice Department to whether he made misstatements on investor conference calls, Reuters reports.
So prosecutors are barred from introducing evidence that he failed to tell investors about an alleged improper practice known as channel stuffing to bolster revenue by giving financial incentives to wholesalers, or to explain an April 2002 plunge in the drugmaker’s stock price after the scheme became known. A spokeswoman for US Attorney Paul Fishman says options are being considered (here’s some background).

Even the best parents use their idiot box as a sitter from time to time. When you have crap to do, it’s oh-so tempting to prop your kids in front of the boob tube and turn on the Disney Channel or pop in a DVD. But how much telly is way too much?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids younger than two years old not watch any TV at all, and that those older than two watch no more than one to two hours a day of educational programs. So how much are our kids watching? A hell of a lot more than that.
According to a recent Nielsen report, American kids are staring at the small screen more than they have since 2001. The study reveals that kids ages two to five spend more than 32 hours a week in front of the TV, and that older kids (ages six to eleven) spend about 28 ...

By Robin Strongin | February 13th, 2010
Immediately after the snow stopped falling in Washington DC this week, another news story took DC by storm–the resignation of Billy Tauzin, effective June 30th.
Mr. Tauzin’s departure comes at a critical time for those involved with health reform efforts, not to mention PHRMA’s own thick portfolio of issues that include patents and trade, the economy, taxes (think offshore), and shrivelling pipelines, just to name a few.
The job pays well, but the applicant will surely inherit a daunting to-do list…

During this blizzard of 2010, I thought about the difficulties an ambulance would have reaching someone in need on an unplowed street—let alone if the person were significantly obese and hard to transport on even an ordinary day. Then today I read an astounding Washington Post article that noted “a patient between 400 pounds and 600 pounds is part of every workweek for many crews throughout the [DC metro] region.” Really? I thought this only happened on occasion in select areas shown on the Discovery Channel. Apparently, not the case.
Emergency medical crews are making hefty investments (no pun intended) in super-sized, ambulatory equipment. According to the article, “sales of stretchers designed specifically for very large patients were expected to reach $50 million in 2...

The Future of Health Care Is Social

Health care is a personal issue that has become wholly public–as the national debate over reforming our system makes painfully clear. But what’s often lost in the gun-toting Town Hall debates about the issue is a clear vision about how medicine could work in the future. In this feature article, frog design uses its people-centered design discipline to show how elegant health and life science technology solutions will one day become a natural part of our behavior and lifestyle. What you see here is the result of frog’s ongoing collaboration with health-care providers, insurers, employers, consumers, governments, and technology companies.

Viral ion channels have minimalist architecture. Despite their relatively simple structure, viral channels can achieve highly specific gating and selection of ions, and the particular mechanisms appear to be different from those of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The unique structural and functional properties of viral channels make them ideal targets for antiviral therapy because the molecules that inhibit viral ion channels may not interact with human ion channels. The M2 proton channel of influenza A virus is a model viral ion channel. This small channel, whose pore is formed by four equivalent transmembrane helices, is the target of two widely used anti-influenza A drugs, amantadine and rimantadine, both belonging to the adamantane class of compounds. However, resistance of influenza A to ...

Ecuador’s Continuing Attack on the Free Press

Last year the Ecuadorian government seized two TV channels broadcasting on public airwaves and one cable channel along with hundreds of other businesses supposedly owned by the Isaías family, an unpopular Ecuadorian business group that the government bailed out in the late nineties. In seizing those assets, the current government claimed to be cashing in on a long overdue debt owed to it by the Isaías family. Leaving the violations of due process aside, this was a significant attack on freedom of the press in Ecuador given that the two public access channels garnered almost half the country’s TV audience. Back then the government said it was going to sell off the seized channels but it has not done so yet.
The last elections in my country, held on April 26, showed how government en...

You’re probably familiar with the popular patient education programs that include a DVD to play on loop in your lobby. While these systems are great, there’s a new option that has taken patient education to a more personal level. Lobby Vision is a custom video that can feature information about your team, your tools, your procedures, and your office - rather than generalities. This personalized approach to patient education is a favorite with Dr. Henry Pinkey. Read his testimonial below.
The following is a letter written by a dentist currently benefiting from the Lobby-Vision Program.

One of my classmates from the Travel Channel Academy has used her video skills to win the use of a car!
“I am one of 100 people to win a 2011 Ford Fiesta (international model) for 6 months! Be sure to check my blog (http://hotfuzzonmylegs.blogspot.com) and twitter (www.twitter.com/lex112884) for more info and to learn more about the winnings!”
That’s very cool. I haven’t done much video myself, but have some projects in the works. Just local stuff, which I’ll post when it’s ready.
I’ve been approved to attend the tenth session of the Southern Pines Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy, and am looking forward to participating. My nephew wonders if that means Buddy will get to be a police dog.

Where else can you watch items on genome analysis of the duck-billed platypus and new interpretations of the mysterious Antikythera Mechanism alongside whale evolution and mega-impacts on Mars? Nowhere, that’s where.
One example: Smoking and Lung

Patricia is a 46 year-old entrepreneurial mother of three who traveled to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center for her tubal ligation reversal. Patricia describes her reasons for tubal ligation, her remarriage, and her desire to have more children after tubal ligation. She explains the hesitancy she felt about becoming an 'older' parent and her decision to have reversal surgery. She also inspires readers by having had an original idea to improve the lives of others, resulting in the development and marketing of a new sports product called the Yackle Ball.
This week on Johnson & Johnson’s YouTube channel, there’s a series of videos featuring General Hospital soap star, Maurice Bernard (who portrays Sonny Corinthos on the show), talking about his battle with bipolar disorder (manic depression). As I gaze at the colorful foliage of autumn around my New Hampshire home, I’m reminded of my mother’s love of this time of year. We were surrounded by pasture and woodlands at the farm where I grew up and where Mother lived for more than 50 years.
She always called our attention to the autumn colors in the woods and field and garden. Some corn stalks lingered in the field beyond the barn. Pumpkins and squash, ready for picking, added color to the garden near the house.
As Mother developed Alzheimer’s, she still enjoyed the autumn leaves and harvest. I recall one autumn of taking her for drives through the colorful countryside near her home. She talked about that for days afterward, whenever she remembered. It was an event that still br...

I usually don’t watch stuff like this, but I’m tuned in to the Travel Channel to see “Most Haunted Live.” It’s a seven hour live “Most Haunted” marathon. Let’s just say that I’m skeptical. When I was at the Travel Channel, Sue Norton, executive producer, asked us to watch. So I am. I even brought a poster back with me to put in our window on SW Broad Street.
Speaking of haunting, I’m going to be at the Inn at the Bryant House tomorrow to shoot some video. The Inn is possibly haunted. :) We’ll see. There have been reports of disembodied voices being heard and other such things. I’ll let you know more about it after I get back. Blooming in June was the focus of the b5 Lifestyles Channel theme day, hosted by Linette Gerlach’s Mother Earth’s Garden blog. With everyone mentioning blooming, flowers, cooking, or expanding your talents, the blogs have a great deal to offer for broadening your horizons this summer.
Find here ways to brighten your days and that of your Alzheimer’s patient. Perhaps even the children in your home. Just reading the phrase, “blooming in June,” gives me cheery visions of flowers and gardens and birds and butterflies. Then there are floral designs on food and quilts and crafts. When you take time for introspection, you’ll find ways to feel better about yourself…blooming within.

“School’s out! Summer vacation is here!” shout youngsters on their last day of school in the US. This day sees no lingering at the school yard, but a rush to get on with warm weather activities.
The Lifestyles Channel celebrates this occasion with a round-up of posts from the various bloggers’ reflections about this season.
Check out what everyone has to say by visiting, School’s Out (Or is it in?!), hosted by Gloria Gamat at the Cancer Commentary blog. As Gloria mentions, school is in throughout some parts of the world this time of year, while students are getting our for vacation or graduating.

Keeping with this months theme day here at the Health and Wellness channel- ‘School is out for the summer’… which means summer camps.
Thanks to many of camps around the world- kids that have disabilities or special needs including congenital heart defects and severe heart disease can take place in the summer fun all the same.
I found and incredible resource while searching for camps in my area. The camps are listed by State and Region. Many are offered for children with heart disease- wonderful indeed!
If you have had any experience with any of the camps listed please let me know how it went and if you would recommend it to another parent. It is always nice to hear feedback.

School is out and that means higher volume at home, more kids running around the house, pool water everywhere and snacks galore! This month’s theme day is Schools Out and today is the day it happens here at the Health and Wellness Channel.
I have a few healthy diabetic snack tips for keeping straight this summer. Instead of grabbing a cookie from the cookie jar or munching on a bag of Doritos why not have healthy and sugar free snacks waiting in the wings…
5 Ready to go diabetic friendly snacks:
1. Pre-cut celery and carrots and place them in a big Ziploc bag- you can open the fridge and grab a handful. They are crunchy and will fill your belly.
2. Popcorn- whether you throw it in the microwave or make it in an air popper… it will take less then 5 minutes and you can pop ...

Yesterday, June 16 is the official start of classes in most schools here in the Philippines (where I am!). So yesterday was my 5-year-old son’s first day at prep.
However in the United States (Europe and Canada too?) June is when school’s out. It doesn’t matter where I am in the world, here at b5media’s Health and Wellness Channel, we celebrate the school’s out month in this month’s Channel Theme Day.

Who doesn’t look forward to school breaks? Both children and parents are so looking forward for the school year to end. I am a parent to a 5-year old who started going to pre-school and some day care of sorts since he was 2-and-a-half. Though not continuously: the first year we lasted only a month, the 2nd year 4 months, the 3rd year he finally finished the whole school year (yeeha!).
Now is the 4th year my son is attending school. He’s in prep now and is raring to go always. Today was his first day at school. We are in the Philippines and so June is actually the start of the school year — after 2 months of our own version of summer break (April and May).
So yeah…who doesn’t look forward to school breaks? We all do. And what does school breaks got to do with c...

Celebrities and their families have been “going public” during the last few years when Alzheimer’s strikes them. This illness is no longer hidden, the person sequestered where no one sees them, and families refrain from talking about it.
This week, as we pursue the theme of Celebrities & Health at the b5media Health & Wellness channel, we’ll be mentioning various celebrities and sharing how they and their families faced this disease and inspired and encouraged others.
I’m pleased that celebrities’ families like those of Ronald Reagan, Charlton Heston, Rita Hayward, Arlene Francis, and others have come forth. Not that we should pry into their lives and make every nuance public, but the knowledge that they aren’t a...

Sometimes, I believe that one’s mental health is overlooked even though it too play a critical part how a patient manages to live with the disease or how survival is willed.
May is Mental Health Month and here at the Health and Wellness Channel, we focus on mental health.
Just one example why mental health is important in cancer patients:
Breast cancer patients who have a prior history of mood and anxiety disorders are at a much higher risk of experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder following their diagnosis, new research suggests.
A study of 74 breast cancer patients at the Ohio State University Medical Center found that 16 percent of them (12 women) suffered from PTSD 18 ...

I have a couple of announcements this fine morning. Number one is that A Hearty Life is no longer part of the Science and Health channel at b5media … it is now part of the Health and Wellness channel!!!! That is our new name but the faces are the same! I think the new channel name fits and encompasses what we do here each and every day.
My second announcement pertains to our Health and Wellness channel theme day. It is going on right now as we speak and the wonderful Marijke is hosting over at Help My Hurt. It is all about cancer.
As Liberty at Healthbolt said, “Great job, Marijke, and great job to everyone all across the b5media Health & Wellness Channel.” Now go on over to Help My Hurt and check us out!

If you haven’t noticed, we are Science and Health channel no more. This fabulous channel is now called the Health and Wellness Channel. More fitting, eh?
Anyways…since the month of April is Cancer Control month, we saw it fitting the this month’s channel theme day should be all about cancer.
And it’s all about cancer today indeed, as Marijke of Help My Hurt hosts.
Though everyone came up with their best entries, my personal pick is of Pink Ribbon Review’s Karen Lynch.
In a post entitled There Are Survivors Among Us, Karen wrote:

I am always cautious about safety in parking lots when shopping alone. What this elderly woman experienced is what most women fear when shopping alone.
A would be robber jumps into the passenger side of an elderly woman’s car. She had just finished grocery shopping when the man entered her car, said he had a gun, and request all of her money. She said “no”, and that is not the most incredible part of the video…

WOW! does not begin to describe her courage and faith. This story comes from Action News 5 in Memphis Tennessee. (Source: CaregivingMinutes™ by Pope Institute)

Reminiscing and memories play a large role in the life of Alzheimer’s patients. Going along with living in a previous decade or era enables caregivers to keep the patient less agitated and happier.
At the b5media Lifestyles Channel, where I write the Quilting and Patchwork blog, we reminisced about the 1980’s for our Theme Day this month, b5media Lifestyles Lovin’ the 80’s.
My mom, who later developed Alzheimer’s, was operating a country general store during the early 80’s. She had encouraged me to begin quilting again (I’d done some with my grandmother when I was a child) and provide her with quilts for her customers during the Bicentennial years of 1975-76. I continued to do this as long as she owned her store in the m...

The greatest month ever, at least in the last two years since I have been blogging full-time.
Here in this blog alone, I was off to a slow start because I got back from a real vacation on 4th Feb. You know what happens after a vacation even how short. You end coming back on the job but wishing you can extend the break for one more week.
Then there was Valentine’s Day and the Theme Day. Not to mention that February is also the other official heart month: American Heart Month.
And who can forget the frustrating downtimes here and network-wide?!
All those, on top of some wonderful, amazing stuff that has been happening in my life all the once right now. This is a month or many firsts! Generally good, putting me in the right cheerful, chirpy mode. The only problem is that, it put my time...

Fans of Kay Redfield Jamison rejoice: here’s the vintage half-hour video An Unquiet Mind: Personal Reflections on Manic-Depressive Illness. A captivating speaker, she’s authored many papers and books on the subjects of bipolar, manic depression and recurrent depression. She is Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and is bipolar herself.
Newly unearthed is this eloquent lecture on her experiences with suicidal depression and psychotic mania, lithium, support, relapse and recovery. Produced in 2002 by the University of Virginia, now on YouTube via the Research Channel, vlogged by Channel N. Worth watching. (Source: World of Psychology)

I hope you all have a nice Presidents’ Day holiday. How are you celebrating? Have you done something special with your Alzheimer’s patient? A different menu, or one traditional with your family?
My mom always made a white cake with white frosting. then she decorated it with maraschino cherries. (George chopping down the cherry tree!) We usually had canned cherries (from my grandparents trees) and ate those with cake for dessert.
We’re digging out from an ice storm where I live. So the grandchildren have had the day off from school and I didn’t get called to substitute teach.

In lieu of February being the American Heart Month, I would like to contribute this post (not cancer related!) in the b5media Science and Health Channel Theme Day.
The month of February has Valentine’s Day too right (that’s today!) and the American Heart Month reminds the American public that cardiovascular diseases (including stroke) are the nation’s No. 1 killer.
Makes you wonder how so. But it just makes sense, since the modern word and living on the fast lane bit is truly bad for the heart. We tend to eat the wrong foods, have bad eating habits and have sedentary lifestyles — not only in our homes but our offices too. We tend to be always on a hurry, even when eating.
Most of us eat on the go. Even eating in front of your computer (like I often do!) is I guess w...

Valentine’s Day provides an opportunity for families to have fun, even with the Alzheimer’s patient members. Whether festivities take place at their home, yours, or a nursing home, you all can participate, even if it’s just in a limited way.
Also, families often are simply looking for Valentine’s Day ideas for fun activities. This always was an enjoyable time in my family when I was growing up, and I’ve tried to continue the traditions with daughter and grandchildren. We would visit Mother in the nursing home on Valentine’s Day when she resided there.
The b5media Lifestyles Channel gathered their ideas for cards, recipes, gifts, and activities to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Visit Hearts and Flowers, Hugs and Kisses a...

Researchers in Switzerland found that patients on a regime of channel calcium blocker medication for hypertension for an extended period of time had a 23 percent lower risk of developing Parkinson's than patients not taking that type of drug. The study also investigated other types of high blood pressure medication including ACE inhibitors, ATII antagonists and beta blockers but none appeared to have the same protective effect of the calcium channel blockers."Long-term use of calcium channel blockers was associated with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease, while no such association was seen for other high blood pressure medications," said Christoph Meier, lead author of the paper and a researcher at University Hospital in Switzerland. The study consisted of ove...

Taking you back to the post I wrote last Saturday about the diabetes explosion occurring in Australia, I happened to come across a program on the Discovery Health channel about diabetes. Guess what the subject matter was? You guessed it- diabetes and the Aborigine people.
The series is called Discovery Health- CME and it is running on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9AM, at least the last few weeks it has around my neck of the woods (East coast). Last weekend they discussed the “thrifty gene”and how it is contributing to a huge increase in diabetes among the Aborigine people in Australia.
Through history this group of people among the outskirts and brush of Australia have had to be very frugal and make a meal stretch for days until the next meal was available. Enter- “thr...

Theme day here at the science and health channel. What do we have on tap? Some New Years resolutions!!! I had posted mine previous, but here we go again.
By the way, I really, really need to concentrate on taking that deep breath before reacting. Oh boy, I do not like yelling at my children. It makes me feel like a bad mommy. I will work on it though, if it is he last thing I do.
So here is my resolutions yet again from Diabetes Notes and A Hearty Life. Don’t laugh too much, I was honest, which can be embarrassing! But I aim to provide some form of entertainment so enjoy!
Jul at Veggie Chic made her resolutions list… a very daring one around my house, haha… Try at least one new recipe a month.

My Diabetic Food, Bloodsugar and Exercise Journal- No Lying Allowed!!!

I have started a new food, bloodsugar, exercise journal over at my other b5media science and health channel site Diabetes Notes. I am being brutally honest and hiding nothing. I urge everyone to remember that I am human as well and although I have access to all information and extended education on these topics, I do not always put it great use!
Go check it out. I think it will benefit both myself and readers. I can keep close track of everything and ensure that I am being totally crystal clear honest with myself, no hiding a darn thing. I am pretty good to begin with- I eat healthy and exercise, but we all need some reminding every once in a while. And feel free to post away and leave comments, both good and bad, and use it to keep yourself on track. Have fun!

I would like to officially welcome our 2 newest bloggers here at the science and health channel. We have a fellow nurse and writer Marijke at Help my Hurt, all about pain management and the essentials of living with chronic pain, and there is Angelique, I love that name, at Breaking the Mirror which is an ED (eating disorder) blog. They have been with b5 for a few weeks now and really rock!
By the way, see if heart disease and MI are indexed in Marijke’s new glossary. I am totally jealous of it and so impressed. Many of hours were spent on her medical glossary and I am thinking of adding it here on this site. I think it is helpful and easy to use. Go check it out and let me know what you think. Leave her a comment with anything that you would want or suggest to be added.

I have been thinking about what type of list post to write here at A Hearty Life for a few days. We are having a theme type day here at our science and health channel today and our exact theme is “a top 5 holiday type list on your specific topic”.
Hmm… we all know the food list, the traveling list and the what not to do list when it comes to cardiac health. So I have pondered over what would be new and fresh and useful, and have come up with the ol’ goose egg several times. But when I think about the words HEART- HOLIDAYS- HEALTH-LIFE, the same image keeps popping into my head… my family!
How do I know that my heart is healthy? I take a look around and realize everything that I have and get that warm, loving, overwhelming feeling in my chest. I don’t car...

Do you enjoy crafts as a hobby, to relieve the stress of caregiving?
Is there a favorite craft your Alzheimer’s family member enjoyed, or still does?
Do you teach crafts at a nursing home?
Would you like to share a post from your blog about Halloween crafts?
Generally the monthly Arts and Design Showcase at b5media features only bloggers from that channel. This month, our host, Noreen from Hankering for Yarn, is opening it up to all craft bloggers.
The theme is Halloween or Day of the Dead crafts. For more details on Noreen’s blog about linking your blog post, click here.

The showcase is scheduled for October 21. Noreen would like all links and a short blurb by a deadline of October 19.
See you there!

The science and health channel here at b5media has launched some new blogs over the last few weeks. We have an eating disorder called Breaking the Mirror. We have a new fertility site called Fertility Notes and a great new pediatric blog, Kids Health Notes.
Grace at Kids Health Notes is a veteran b5′er and has some great things to offer. One of her posts last week was right up our alley here at A Hearty Life. She reminded us that chest pains among children and teens should be taken seriously and worked up just as carefully as an adult would be.
Go check out her post and see what else she has to say. Have a great weekend all!

There is so much offered here on our lil’ ol’ science and health channel. I picked a few posts that were useful for diabetics… and a few that are just darn good! Enjoy.
Scott over at Health and Men offers up … Diabetes is a wide spread and ever so growing disease. In fact more that 21 million Americans (lets not forget the rest of the world too) suffer from diabetes. I know what your saying, “Diabetes doesn’t effect me…but what can I do to help or make a difference?”. Or thats what I’m hoping your saying. Here is what you can do.
Have you ever thought, “what happens to my heart during sex?” I watched a special on the discovery channel a few evenings ago and learned more than I ever wanted to know about my body and sex! And I still find it interesting, well actually sad, that we do not incorporate sexual education into our cardiac patients treatment plan.
Let’s get real, your heart definitely gets a workout during the horizontal hokie pokie. Not enough to cancel your gym membership, but enough to mention. Here is a peek at how your heart reacts during the 4 stages of your “hot and heavy”…
Arousal- Your heart rate and respiratory rate go up. Your blood pressure quickly follows suit and you get a flushed feeling from head to toe. Just imagine walking the mall briskly, but only way m...

Here is a bit of what my fellow bloggers here at b5’s science and health channel have to say about heart health. What a great group of bloggers! Yee ha!
Ruth at Eating Fabulous has bought her first bottle of rice bran oil. And apparently, this type of oil is suppose to help promote cardiovascular health. I will have to check my local store, but my guess is I will have to travel to a health type grocer. It might be worth it though!
Healthbolt’s Sara blogged about the new bioabsorbable heart patch that is being used to help heal patent foramen ovale, “hole in heart”, and dissolves within 30 days. Amazing stuff right there!
Also, Kristen at Lively Women and Scott at Health and Men offer up some great hearty info. Ahh, so many blogs, so little time, haha.

All righty then. I found research out of UT Southwestern Medical Center that is a bit taboo. They have found a drug that can counteract the symptoms associated with a cocaine overdose. That handy little drug is most often seen in the operating room or ICU’s and is used as a anesthetic. And it’s name… dexmedetomidine.
They found that the drug was effective in reversing the actions of cocaine on heart rate, blood pressure and vascular resistance in the skin by interfering with the ability of cocaine to increase nerve activity. “Typically, patients with cocaine overdoses in the emergency room are treated with nitroglycerin, sedatives such as Valium, and some blood-pressure medications such as calcium channel blockers and some beta blockers,” Dr. Vongpatanasin sai...

The Human Rights Campaign and LOGO Channel have reconsidered their position on allowing former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel to participate in their televised Presidential forum on LGBTQ issues after a groundswell of response from the blogging community. In this announcement from HRC, we learn that Sen. Gravel is now welcome to join the debate and that the forum has been extended from an hour to 90 minutes to allow more time for all candidates.Congratulations to the grassroots efforts from blogs such as Queerty.com and others for reporting on this topic and for turning around an exclusionary financial criterion for participation in shaping candidates' views of the LGBTQ community.Categories: HRC LOGO+Channel Human+Rights+Campaign Presidential+forum LGBTQ politics (Source: 2sides2ron)

US House Keeps Cheney Budget IntactYesterday, I was heartened to hear that a bill had been introduced in the US House to cut off funding for the Office of Vice-President Dick Cheney. This bill was introduced in response to the Vice President's legal efforts to avoid providing documentation and details of his activities to House oversight. The apparent secrecy of this administration is unprecedented in my lifetime and I lived through the Watergate scandal and the Nixon administration. I had hoped that his bill would succeed in bringing the Vice President into line to recognize that he and his office are not above the law. Sadly, the bill was narrowly defeated today.URGENT: Please call your Senators to support Senate Bill 1105, the Matthew Shepard ActFrom the Human Right Campaign:Today Sen. ...

That Kool Beanz inventiveness now extends to pastry chef Kim Bertron (pictured), whose design for a syringe won her first prize in the History Channel's "Invent Now Challenge" in March. Hosted by Ted Koppel, it chronicles the experiences of Leroy Sievers, an executive producer at Discovery.
In 2002 Sievers was diagnosed with colorectal cancer that had metastasized to his lungs and brain. The program features a discussion with Sievers as he deals with chemotherapy, scans and cutting edge procedures.
Koppel says the program is intended to show that people can and do live successfully with cancer everyday.
Sievers says "Normalcy is the greatest gift anyone can give you, let me continue to be me, not cancer. I am not my disease, I just have a disease. That's all"
