Personality Disorders Shakeup in DSM-5

Narcissistic personality disorder is slated for removal from the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, to be published in 2013. So notes Charles Zanor in yesterday’s New York Times.
But for some reason, Zanor glossed over the loss of four other personality disorders in the shakeup too — Paranoid, Schizoid, Histrionic and Dependent Personality Disorders. (Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Avoidant and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders will remain in the new revision.)
Their intended replacements?
“The Work Group recommends that [these disorders] be represented and diagnosed by a combination of core impairment in personality functioning and specific pathological personality traits, rather than as a specific ty...

Julia Child has always been the one who can best explain cooking to me in terms that make me understand not just how to make the recipe in question, but how and why to be a good cook.
We were very lucky to get her to be our annual speaker at the Mercantile Library a few years ago. She was as wonderful that evening as you could imagine from her shows and books. The local culinary academy’s students, who made the hors d’oeuvres for the gathering, were in awe of her, and she very patiently sat for snapshots with each of them.
One dish that I try to make (and/or am feeling too inadequate to try) is an omelette. They’re easy, and good, and have a level of sophistication about them that has nothing to do with fancy ingredients or technically difficult cul...

Greetings! I offer my apologies for not being around much last week. It wasn’t for lack of trying, rather due to lack of Internet access.
I spent last week in the beautiful land of Yellowstone National Park! I was not vacationing, rather spending the week consulting and training chefs at various lodges in the park.
It was grueling and I certainly wish that I had refilled my prescription for anti-fatigue meds prior to the trip! It is also absolutely stunning in its beauty.
As I mentioned before, there was no Internet access in the park, save for a faint Wi-Fi signal outside the employee dorms which just wasn’t strong enough to saddle with any postings for our blog.
Since I was in the world’s first national park, a place families from across the globe visit year-round, and due ...

Substance Abuse Amongst Chefs

I love Hell’s Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares, two Fox shows hosted by Gordon Ramsay, OBE, a British celebrity chef and very strong personality. Watching this season of Hell’s Kitchen reminded me of the stress and rigors that chefs in training regularly undergo. And something rarely mentioned on these shows — substance and alcohol abuse amongst student chefs.
While on internship in New York, I had the pleasure of serving at the local county department of mental hygiene (yes, mental health is like your teeth — you need to floss your brain regularly to keep it clean!). In one of my rotations there, I had the pleasure of seeing a few clients who were attending the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. This is one of the premier chef schools in America, and if you...
