Although the “classic” presentation of Budd-Chiari syndrome is an acute venous outflow obstruction of the hepatic veins or inferior vena cava resulting in fulminant liver failure and liver transplantation, the more common occurrence is a more chronic or subacute presentation with the formation of gradually increasing ascites and hepatic dysfunction.
The One & Other Antony Gormley project ended today in Trafalgar Square, London.Among the many media reports and summaries of the project, Laura Hickman who represented Chiari Malformation awareness efforts during her hour on the Fourth Plinth has received additional attention. The Times (UK) cites her hour as being on of the best of the 2400 individual hours in the project and says this about her:"Laura Hickman: held up placards carrying the words of 30 sufferers of rare brain condition Chiari Malformation. Has since persuaded the NHS to recognise the condition, started work for Chicago's Chiari Centre Foundation, and plans to open a UK branch of the charity."Excellent work! Here is a link to the full report: Best of the Trafalgar Square plinthers (14th October, 2009).
I have been researching Clozaril and lack of speech as a side effect. When I typed the phrase "clozaril lack of speech" into Google and Google Advanced Search, I found my blog.To the depths of reading abstracts I go, reading into the night. Also, several school administrators told me that they see an "organic" reason for what is happening and "none of us believe Chiari's just go away, who have you contacted for another opinion?"The answer is the question.~Questions and statements said to me by medical professionals and psychiatrists the last 2 weeks: 1. What should we do?2. You know more about the system than I do, now what?3. What is Prodrome?[schizophrenia]4. I need to get the DSM out, I don't know how Clozaril works, the laws or any of it, let me call the pharmacist.5. We didn't want to ...

This was Lindsay's gurney. I need to check the date, but it was either at mental health court or the one that took her to Western State Hospital. I've got it noted that she was in the bathroom when this photo was taken. AMR, the ambulance company that transports patients to and from hospitals from E.R.'s, mental health court, etc. was one of the highest medical bills accrued.[that was unexpected.Children's was 1/4 million $, paid via uncompensated funds] One way trips were at the minimum 800.00. It took me 6 months after her return home to finally get that account settled. The paperwork is beyond belief, and just another factor many people do not know is part of the mental health system. Because she was I.T.A.[involuntary admit]she was strapped down at the wrists and ankles and across her ...

Thank God.Time for a Specialist"Based on Patient's unique symptoms and poor response to medications prescribed up to this point, and nothing hopeful from Patient's doctors, we have reached a point of frustration. it appears we've exhausted our options locally with respect to finding a Physician with expertise in dealing with Patient's unique blend of symptoms. Considering the delicate nature of the situation with respect to potential damage occurring from taking wrong medications, we cannot afford to keep Patient on current medication for psychosis for long when we know Patient's seizures aren't being addressed and cognitive abilities are being strongly compromised by the current drug."--Orthomolecular Schizophrenia Protocol blog.Orthomolecul...

Once again, thank you to my email buddy helping me sort out the Chiari and Autism connection. In other words, the person is reminding me not to stop seeking an answer, until it is defined.Help me think. That's what I need. I've been thinking so long, and the Chiari was found after the PDD/Asperger's diagnosis. Anyone who knows Chiari and the brain; here is a quote from one letter I received from the last neurosurgeon. It appears to shift all "thought" back to the psychiatric field."In fact, she only had approximately 2.9mm of tonsillar herniation below the basion opisthion line. Therefore, I would not even call this a Chiari 1 malformation. This high-quality MRI basically clarified everything for us."--neurosurgeon.If everything was clarified, then why isn't she talking, or reading, or livin...

The day started off with my personal quest, to maintain my own bipolar and everything else.First off, made sure I wasn't going to stay in the house, and if Lindsay couldn't handle going out, I would find someone to sit in the house with her instead of me.I've been reminding her with gentle pressure to maintain what the case manager and I talked to her about last week, was the basic daily self care stuff. Brush teeth, meds, etc. She was on track this morning, and then looked at me and said, "I need to be electrocuted."You know what? I said, "I can assure you that is not what normal minds think, so if you really believe that; then rest assured and find comfort in the fact that I can tell you that is an abstract thought."I also went on to say that I had to go run errands, buy hand lotion, and...

The ignorance about Chiari is astounding."The person advised me to look at this website The Chiari InstituteIronically last June of 2006, this was the first place I called after looking on the Internet for information. At the time, Lindsay was still inpatient in the psych ward and the kind nurse in NY told me they would help me figure out how to transport her there; being we were talking about an inpatient psych patient. Then I consulted 2 neurosurgeons, and the one Lindsay just saw, was the one I felt confident working with due to his impressive background.
I’m an advocate for education, first and foremost. I always have been, long before my son Charlie was diagnosed with autism, long before he was born. While the subjects of the classes I teach are the languages of Latin and classical Greek, and of the ancient culture of the Greeks and Romans, at the core of my teaching efforts is to teach students to think, to use their minds, to figure things out, to draw on what they have learned to learn more. However “severe” or “high” or “low” functioning a child is, she or he needs to be taught and—though the process can be slow, and progress measure in small gains (a child can zip up his own sweatshirt; a child knows how to find the front and back of a t-shirt)—learning can and does happen.
When Lindsay was inpatient at all of the hospitals; her clothes and belongings were constantly stolen. Some items made it home. Some did not. There is one shirt that made it the entire absurd trip from hell; and she wears it every single day. When it is being laundered, she waits for it to be washed and dried. It is a victory shirt. Just like her, she made it out. Worn, and faded.Still here.During those days, and months, I basically lived in my car. I had scissors, sharpies, notepads, files and poster boards of photos of Lindsay.I replaced lost and stolen clothing so many times, that by the time she came home, she had no clothes in her possession. I had to replace it all. But there was that shirt.I was tired of her things being stolen. Her dignity was already removed, and her youth stolen, a...

There is no evidence of Chiari malformation. The CSF flow is normal. The report states that what was seen last year is completely gone. Normal MRI.~Two years, and one concrete thing that became more than hope for a future for Lindsay. The neuro doc shook my hand and hugged me. I left the building smiling. It took a couple of hours for the real set back, and devastation to sink in, that I am exactly where I was 2 years ago [since 1999], yet she is not the same person at all.I have called the psychiatrist, and am now on the road to continue to seek the answers I have been searching. One thing you can count on in life is change. One thing my daughter can count on, is me.~peace. Thank you.I am continually inspired by bloggers and their stories. The more I read, the more I learn, and the blogosphere just keeps expanding my understanding of real people, out there somewhere, constantly amazing me with personal stories and life happenings. From mental health to disability, brain malformations and feminism--well I could spend hours reading and learning, and most of all really thinking quite a bit as a result. I am happy to be chosen again, not for myself--but so I can highlight a few more blogs I have come across the last month or so and share them here. Thanks for enriching my life with your stories everyone, I am honored to be a part of this world....

MRI of brain and spine complete, and she did it on her own

More later, but she did the MRI on her own, no medication, no IV.I wore earplugs and held her legs and stood there for 45 minutes. Watching this young woman show me the true definition of courage. She cried. She did it.We walked to the gift shop, and she picked out a plush kitty that looks like our tabby cat.I reside under her shadow. (Source: soulful sepulcher)

I have so many nice comments, and I have been mentally challenged of late to figure out my sidebar thing to add a rolling comment thing. I am actually one of those people who look at copy machines and they break and need toner or something dramatic. Slowly, I am evolving here. The more I think, the more I remember and the more I write, the more friends show up here and remind me I am not alone in this big atmosphere; called the blogosphere. I find it humorous, that I even can type, and just for the record, the little bit of HTML shit I know was taught to me by Lindsay when she was 12! I had saved a cheat sheet she typed me, and seriously, this is why I know how to "live link."! haha. God, Lindsay is so smart.I need to thank everyone and I'm starting with a new blogger who left me kind comm...

Establishing the Physiology of Syringomyelia"The brain and spinal cord are surrounded by fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The CSF flows through channels in the brain and around the spinal cord. Occasionally, people are born with malformations of these channels. Syringomyelia is a pocket within the CSF channels that results from abnormal CSF flow. Syringomyelia is associated with problems in the nervous system. Patients with syringomyelia may be unable to detect sensations of pain and heat. If the condition is not treated it can worsen."Establishing the Physiology of SyringomyeliaPathophysiology of syringomyelia associated with Chiari I malformation of the cerebellar tonsils.
Well I thought I might need to pack a brown bag to breathe into this morning. This was just a review of the last MRI so Linds could meet the neuro doc again, since July was a long time ago for her to remember him.We had quite a wait. She was restless, and started pacing. 2.5 hours after arriving for her appointment, it was finally her turn. That was way too long for her to wait anywhere, and she started crying. He showed her the MRI on the computer, and printed off a copy of her brain for her. It's very cool, in that respect. Dozens of angles of the brain and inside of her head."You have a size 10 brain in a size 9 skull." [I sat wondering how many times he says that to people, he is the best neuro-doc on West Coast for the Chiari surgery. I have confidence in this doc. He is nice, and if s...
