I was six years old and the worst thing that had ever happened was the recent NICU stay of my youngest brother, who had pneumonia at birth. I wore my clothes appropriately fitted, wore jewelry whenever my mother allowed, and loved having my hair put up in foam rollers for the Shirley Temple look on the occasional Saturday night so I could look extra pretty for church the next day.

We grew up in the Midwest, not Texas, despite my brothers looks in this photo.
My best friends were my brothers and the kids at the farm down the road. Even there, I remember trying to wear my new red clogs instead of Wellingtons when I went out to the barn in the evening to help with the milking. I ended up barefoot in cow manure with my clogs safely stashed by the bulk tank so they wouldn't get dirty.I remembe...

By Archelle Georgiou. A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds and three million cases involving almost 5.5 million children are reported each year. This tragedy occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
This issue has never impacted me, my family or anyone close to me, but since childhood, I have been passionate about protecting children from abuse. As early as age ten, I was in Rock Creek Park (in Washington, DC) on a picnic with my family when I saw a mother whipping her young children with a tree branch. I marched up to her and demanded that she stop. As recently as a month ago, while patiently waiting for a table at IHOP, I noticed a mom yanking so hard on her toddler’s arm t...

The Psychology of the Casey Anthony Trial

So Casey Anthony was found not guilty of murder, meaning we can go back to our everyday, regular lives. On July 5, the jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated manslaughter, and aggravated child abuse (but found her guilty of four lesser, misdemeanor offenses related to her interrogations). What? You mean you “want answers” as to why she wasn’t found guilty?
We all want answers in our lives. We yearn for answers. People spend years in therapy looking for answers. But life isn’t always so neat, nor does it always provide easy-to-understand answers to such a tragic series of events that led to the death of Casey Anthony’s toddler, Caylee.
So the short answer is — there are no answers. You’re looking for justice in a worl...

Over the last two years I have seen two documentaries both entitled ‘A Very Dangerous Doctor’. Both featured the work and research of the now discredited Professor David Southall. It has puzzled me how these documentaries failed to mention the crucial evidence of Lisa Blakemore-Brown and instead both chose to focus their attention on the work and evidence of Munchausen by Proxy campaigner and Southall hater Ms Penny Mellor.
Ms Blakemore-Brown began to speak out about this incredibly dangerous man back in 1995/1996 long before Penny Mellor had even been heard of. However, instead of the fame and glory that has been lavished on Ms Mellor, Blakemore-Brown has had to endure many attempts to destroy her career, victimization and ridicule.
I believe the key reason behind the attempts...

Donna Trussell, then and now.
My new post on AOL / Politics Daily. Open Letter to My High School Class. Especially Paula.
In my four decades since graduating, I have avoided high school reunions. But this year we’re coming up on the 40th anniversary, and you know how everyone likes round numbers. And, unlike ten years ago, we now have facebook.
Just a month ago, my maiden name was nowhere to be found on the Internet. I didn’t want to be found by people who knew me during that painful time in my life.
My father was an engineer, and he made an excellent living. Despite that, we lived in a run-down Dallas neighborhood. But the district lines of Bryan Adams High School were so expansive — graduating class of 1,116 — that I was in the same school as kids from affl...

Long ago, something happened to me that I haven't talked about much since. I suffered child sexual abuse, like 3 out of every 5 American women, and 2 of every 5 men. Ill equipped at seven to understand the depth of the injury to my heart, I was a quick forgiver and a stuffer. I just took a stick and rammed all that ugliness, fear, pain, confusion, and desolation deep down, hiding it down in the dark depths of my soul. For a long time, no one broke through that shell. Again in college, someone took the knife of their own evil and pierced me through again. I was kidnapped and raped and - perhaps worse - participated in the prosecution of these men, undergoing a grueling 19 hour interrogation on the stand, forced to repeat details of the events in front of my parents and strangers. I was...

Skinny: Report from the NSPCC that finds that:

Around one in four 18-24 year olds reported experiences of severe physical violence, sexual abuse or neglect in childhood.
The number of young adults experiencing severe violence, forced sex and prolonged verbal abuse during childhood has dropped over the last 30 years.
Young adults from lower socio-economic groups and those with separated parents reported significantly higher levels of physical violence, coerced sexual acts, regular verbal aggression and parental lack of care and supervision during childhood.
Almost one in five 11-17 year old children has been physically attacked by an adult, raped or sexually assaulted or s...

How would you feel if I were to tell you that there are many children suffering in the world today? How about if I were more specific and told you that over 30,000 children under age 5 are suffering from hunger and preventable diseases? Does this resonate within the depths of your heart?
Sweet, innocent babies die every day from a preventable disease in an indigenous country. That number could be considered huge by some, or perhaps quite small, depending on your perspective. If you are referring to population size, however, that is the size of a small city. In regard to time, 30,000 seconds is actually only a little over eight hours. Or 30,000 children could be like 30 large elementary schools disappearing from the face of the earth on Monday … and again on Tuesday … and so on.

How effective is your local child protective services department? You know, that agency which is charged in protecting the health and well-being of children in your community.
Child protective services are not very effective at all, at least when it comes to specific risk factors that could improve a child’s well-being and mental health.
In a nationwide study that examined children in 595 families over a period of 9 years, researchers discovered that in the households where child abuse was substantiated by evidence, risk factors remained unchanged during followup interviews with the families.

The risk factors are considered “modifiable” risk factors — those things which could be changed to enhance the health and well-being of the child. They include things such a...

Yesterday, the Sydney Herald reported an astounding 1000 plus reports of adverse reactions following the flu vaccine, Fluvax. These reports included 100 reports of febrile convulsions.
In her report, journalist Carol Bennett stated:
“It showed the CSL-produced Fluvax and Fluvax Junior may have caused two to three hospital admissions due to seizure for every admission from flu it prevented”.
//

Febrile convulsions are caused when a child’s body rapidly overheats resulting in a seizure. The NetDoctor website gives insight into what a child suffering from a febrile convulsion looks like:

The attack often begins with the child losing consciousness, and shortly afterwards the body, legs and arms go stiff.
The head is thrown backwards and t...

Brain Swelling and Damage Associated With Vaccines – Inappropriately Labeled Shaken Baby Syndrome
Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines Meeting Sept. 2-3, 2010, Rockville, MD
With all due respect to what’s been presented at this meeting, the Advisory Commission on Childhood Vaccines needs to hear about the unfortunate miscarriage of justice against parents whose children suffer brain swelling vaccine damage and are legally prosecuted by authorities with such charges as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). Munchausen by Proxy (MSBP), Fictitious Induced Illness (FII), Non-Accidental Injury (NAI), Physical Abuse, Failure to Protect, and Child Abuse.
Numerous infants and toddlers suffer brain trauma with or without hemorrhages; brain swelling (ed...

This is the seventh in a series of articles about emotional intelligence for personal growth. Many people are unsure what they feel. Some deny feeling anything at all. Others report boredom much of the time and seek reckless excitement when they can. Still others have never felt like they fit in. They may have experienced being ignored, picked on, or even being treated like scapegoat. Others seem to have an emotional on/off switch; they're either rational or raging. Some people seem to carry a fowl mood with them where ever they go. All it takes is a bad experience, and they spiral down into an emotional hole. Others get so emotional at times they feel like they're going crazy. They become so desperate to escape their feelings that they'll do anything to escape, even things they'll feel bad...

By Tim LynchA Georgia jury has acquitted Tonya Craft of 22 criminal charges relating to child abuse and child molestation. A remarkable outcome given the awful rulings of the judge during the trial. Previous coverage here and here.
When so many charges are leveled, the pressure to enter into a plea bargain intensifies–even if the accused is innocent. The defense attorney will say something like, “Look, some kids are going to say you did something awful. That’s going to happen. We might persuade the jury to acquit on most of the charges, but there’s still a chance they will convict you on a few counts. That could mean several years in jail. Might be better to plead guilty to one charge, serve six months, and then get on with your life.” ...

Kids of divorced parents are often caught in the crossfire of bad arguments and legal disputes. But Jack and Crystal Buckner’s daughters are in the middle of a uniquely controversial case in northern Texas. NPR reports that when the couple’s eight-year-old started having behavioral problems, she went to a therapist, and eventually told the therapist that her Dad had been showing both of his daughters adult porn on the computer – and Daddy told the girls it was to teach them about sex. The therapist called Family and Protective Services (we’d do the same), but Texas law isn’t so straightforward.
Though the Texas penal code makes it possible to prosecute anyone who sells or shows harmful material to a minor (and defines pornography as harmful), it doesn’t appl...

New research demonstrates what many of us could guess . . . Being spanked as a child is linked to having a lower IQ, according to a study presented today at the International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego. The relationship between spanking and intelligence is found in children around the world, said the lead author of the study, University of New Hampshire professor Murray Straus. Children in the United States who were spanked had lower IQs -- by 2.8 to 5 points -- than those who were not spanked, Straus found. Straus studied 806 children ages 2 to 4 and 704 ages 5 to 9. Both groups were retested four years later. How often parents spanked influenced IQ score. "The more spanking, the slower the development of the child's mental ability," Straus said in a news relea...

Just read the first statement from author, Dana Ullman:

The primary purpose of this article is to encourage a stronger commitment from doctors and parents to consider using safer medical care for infants and children FIRST before resorting to more dangerous treatments.
I absolutely agree with this statement. It's not to say that there are not medical treatments which are necessary and lifesaving, but are there options. What are those options? Take constipation for example. I have seen numerous children hospitalized due to constipation. When if...

Before you go into psychotherapy, you should be informed of your rights as a patient ahead of time by the therapist. The therapist should, in addition, give you a printed copy of something that reads similar to the below, so that you can take it home with you. We’ve long had a version of these rights here on our website, but I thought it might be helpful to further describe or explain each right in a little more detail.
Therapists nowadays may also often offer you their guidelines for electronic and/or outside contact, (such as through Facebook, email, telephone, etc). This sets the ground rules for how you may contact the therapist outside of session, in event of an emergency, or in the event that you just want to share something with your therapist (or change your appointment or su...

We've all heard about viruses and websites that steal our sensitive private information. Cyberstalking has also become a problem on social media sites. Blogs, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook, in particular, are prone to this sort of abuse. Image by luc legay via FlickrBut even cellphone texting can be a problem since you can forward others details where ever you want. Although there are mixed reviews of just how much of a risk there is, there is agreement there is a risk. Parents should certainly provide supervision for their kids with the youngest getting the most.

John Dvorak, a columnist at MarketWatch.com recently posted an interesting article.

Title: Multi-agency practice guidelines: Handling Cases of Forced Marriage
The Skinny: Revised set of multi-agency practice guidelines for frontline professionals (such as teachers, police officers, social and health care professionals, housing officers) to help them to work more closely together and to better identify and protect children and adults at risk of forced marriage. The revised guidelines replace the existing individual guidelines which were tailored for specific professionals and now brings these together into one single document.

Title: Safeguarding Children – A review of arrangements in the NHS for safeguarding children
The Skinny: Review of child safeguarding in the NHS from the Care Quality Commission based on a detailed survey of 392 NHS trusts. It finds that a majority of organisations had the right people and systems to help protect children. However it highlights worrying shortfalls in the numbers of staff up to date with mandatory training, designed to help them identify and respond to concerns across the NHS, as well as those dealing with children routinely, such as GPs and those in A&E, paediatric and sexual health services.

We were not told that they are doctors, so we can assume that they are health care professionals. (HCPs). Of much more importance however is that Hollie Steel hails from Accrington.Accrington is a small ex-mill town in North East Lancashire, surrounded by other towns with wonderful names. Huncoat, Rising Bridge, Baxenden, Rawtenstall, Lower Micklehurst and, never forget, Oswaldtwistle. Accrington is, as everyone knows, the home of the most famous football team of all, Accrington Stanley. (Why "Stanley"?
Conclusion: Findings support the evidence that depression is particularly severe and difficult to treat in patients with CSA and pain. Clinicians should evaluate pain in depressed patients with CSA histories. Role functioning may prove to be a particularly important target in the treatment of patients with pain. Source... Now a comment comes in from one of the children who was there. Yes, it's one side of the story only, but it has the ring of authenticity. In 1979 there was an outcry after an article that appeared in a care magazine regarding Kendall House. That was ignored by the church, the police, the government, Dr Perinpanayagam and the local authorities who knew of the concers as stated in a letter carried on placing girls in Kendall House. Then in 1980 the story broke in the media again after a documentry was aired where Kendall House was in the firing line. The namely Miss G--- in a very senior position within the ...

Every so often, I’m reminded of the plain truth that many people still do not “get” that your body’s physical health is interconnected and cannot be separated from your body’s mental health. One affects the other.
This is no more clear than a spate of news articles from this week so far demonstrating this connection. And this is just a week’s worth of connections… if you go back over the past decade, you’ll find hundreds of such studies demonstrating the strong connection between our mind and body’s health.
For instance, researchers at Bangor University in Wales found performance of a mentally fatiguing task prior to a difficult exercise test caused participants to reach exhaustion more quickly than when they did the same exercise when...

It doesn’t come as a surprise that childhood abuse has long term effects that show itself way into adulthood. Adults with a history of childhood abuse are known to have higher risks of psychological problems and difficulty responding to stress. But a recent study found that abuse in early childhood can permanently change how certain genes in the brain work, so much, that the risk of suicide is increased.
A Canadian study led by Michael Meaney examined the gene for glucocorticoid receptor – which controls a brain’s response to stress – in 12 suicide victims with a history of abuse, and another 12 who did not suffer abuse as children.
The researchers found that those who have been abused as children produced chemical changes in the brain which reduced the gene’s activity, and in ...

Those who wonder, in their golden ways what’s so funny about gallows humor, the sole comfort of those who’ve escaped the hangman and an affront to those who have no knowledge of his existence.
Welp, there it is, in black & white, no less.

Thanks

This is a sad story. But it's simplistic to blame the abandoned children solely on poor mental health care. While the statistics are stunning about the incidence of mental illness in these children, another problem involved is the insufficient income of the parents, likely an inter-generational history of neglect and abuse, as well as the stigma of asking for help.

Iowa Independent

"The state of Nebraska faces a situation most parents can't comprehend. At last count 34 children, ranging in age from 20 months to 17 years, have been left at Nebraska hospitals under the auspices of a vaguely written "Safe Haven" law.

The Nebraska law, which was signed in February and became effective in July, was to be the last, given that all other states had already enacted similar legislation. During d...

While debate continues over the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, a new study indicates traumatic events and PTSD symptoms may be followed in some cases by a size reduction in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that regulates emotions and short term memory. Though most attention surrounding PTSD focuses on war veterans, the advance by Brigham Young University researchers examined a larger population at risk: abused children. "The size reduction in the hippocampus seems to occur sometime after the initial exposure to stress or trauma in childhood, strengthening the argument that it has something to do with PTSD itself or the stress exposure," said Dawson Hedges, a BYU neuroscientist and an author on the study. The study, which appears in the August issue of the neuroscience journ...

Recently, the NYTimes.com had an article about a malicious sort of on-line anti-social behavior called Trolling. One of the people the author interviewed was Jason Fortuny, a thirty-two year old web programmer, who's passion is trolling.

"Today the Internet is much more than esoteric discussion forums. It is a mass medium for defining who we are to ourselves and to others. Teenagers groom their MySpace profiles as intensely as their hair; escapists clock 50-hour weeks in virtual worlds, accumulating gold for their online avatars. Anyone seeking work or love can expect to be Googled. As our emotional investment in the Internet has grown, the stakes for trolling -- for provoking strangers online -- have risen. Trolling has evolved from ironic solo skit to vicious group hunt.

WASHINGTON, DC- Since the days of Sigmund Freud, clinicians have observed that early-life trauma may lead to adult psychopathology. At the 161st Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association, Charles Nemeroff, MD, PhD, presented recent research that suggests a neurobiologic underpinning for this association. Dr Nemeroff, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, noted that child abuse is one of the major factors contributing to depression. "Child abuse or neglect is, unfortunately, a very common problem," he said. "Four out of every 20 girls will be abused and one or two of every 20 boys. The peak age of vulnerability is 7 to 13. In the United States, approximately 500,000 children are sexually a...

Via, an old wiki entry that’s been replaced by a more clinical definition, alas:
“The goal of psychodynamic therapy is the experience of truth. This truth must be encountered through the breakdown of psychological defenses. Simply stated:
[psychodynamic] psychotherapy teaches the client to be honest.
Individuals suffering from “psychological disorders” or deep-rooted “personality disorders,” often come from confusing, manipulative, dishonest, or even violent families in childhood. Being honest with ones feelings is a difficult, even terrifying process for these people.
But there is a silver lining. If the patient client is willing to face up to their hidden secrets they will discover the unconscious reason for many of their feelings, and ther...

That’s the principle behind NAMI’s propaganda-as-philanthropy campaign to exonerate themselves in the eyes of the world, which continues apace. And on the back of consumers, natch. They’ve delivered sets of 20 books to seven libraries. Who does that, and why? Imagine if the KKK did this, the outcry would be instant and deafening. But these people are pro’s, the nation’s hate groups could do worse than look at NAMI to take their lessons.

UGA College of Public Health associate professor PhaeDr Corso and her colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed surveys of more than 6,000 people to assess the deficits in quality of life that victims suffer. "We found, with rigorous statistical methods, that there are significant differences in health-related quality of life between people who were maltreated as children and those who were not," Corso said, "and that holds across all age groups." Childhood maltreatment - which includes physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect - has been li...

identifies that children living in countries affected by conflict and natural disaster are being sexually exploited and abused by - aid workers and peacekeepers. There is general silence surrounding the abuse. Children and their families are not speaking out because of fear and powerlessness. And international organisations are failing to respond effectively to allegations of abuse levelled against them.
No One to Turn To from Save the Children Fund is based on research with communities and international organisations, examines the chronic under-reporting of abuse and the inadequate response to it. It provides new analysis on why this abuse persists despite international efforts to stop it, and proposes new solutions to tackle it. (Source: Fade Library)

I had thought that he was a sickeningly depraved pervert but I gather now that that is not the case. He is not a criminal.
Friday I learned something serious in a CPS hearing about the leading CSA (child sexual abuse) prevention program known as Good Touch/Bad Touch. I was grateful when this program came out 25 years ago, thought it would have helped me if it was around when I was growing up, I’ve used the teaching [...] (Source: Writhe Safely)

5-year-old Brandon Williams died on Wednesday night, March 21st, 2007. His mother, Diane L. Marsh, had given him six to seven Simply Sleeps, five to six Tylenol PMs, two chewable aspirin, and a tablespoon of Benadryl. When medics tried to revive him, they noticed signs of abuse on his wrists, ankles, and feet: It was found out that Marsh had been giving Brandon, who had autism, sleep-inducing medicine twice a day, and also been disciplining him by “tying him up, plunging his feet into scalding water and beating him with a wire hanger,” today’s Arizona Daily Star reports. An autopsy revealed that Brandon died of a skull fracture.
Marsh and another woman, Flower Nicole Tompson, 28, were arrested last year and charged with first-degree murder and multiple counts of child abu...

Child abuse survivors are almost two and a half times as likely to have poor mental health outcomes and four times more likely to be unhappy even in much later life, according to new research from University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia. And in a surprise finding that requires further research, the work also reveals that child abuse survivors are more likely to get a tertiary education. The study - the largest of its kind into the long-term effects of physical and sexual abuse - assessed 21,000 participants aged over 60 from five Australian states. The results are published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Poor physical health is another outcome, the study has found. Childhood physical and sexual abuse increases the risk of having three or more medical diseases, i...

Virtually all of the recent youthful mass murderers suffered bullying, emotional neglect, and often physical abuse at the hands of peers and/or parents. Today we make blogging history. Today, thousands all over the world are Blogging Against Abuse.

Lets understand the scope of the problem.

According to DHHS in their Child Maltreatment report, during 2005, an estimated 3.3 million referrals were made to child protective services (CPS) national wide. Six million children were involved. made to CPS agencies. Sixty two percent were deamed serious enough to investigate, 25 percent were found to be substantiated.
Patriarchy: A social system in which the father is the head of the family and men have authority over women and children.
I support Brigitte Harris, the 26-year-old New York woman charged with strangling and castrating her pig of a father for what he did to her because he could.
What he did to his daughter (almost every type of sexual act possible from the time she was 3 years old through her young adulthood) is not remarkable.
One in five girls grows up raped by a family member, night after night year in and year out. Our society condones this, if you find that hard to believe, listen to a victim. As if.
Our society likes to believe that incest is taboo. Wrong, incest is ordinary. Revealing the truth of incest is what’s taboo. Victims who do tell are not believed. None of which is...

Calling all NAMI! Yoo-hoo! Hi! ((((((HUGS!!!1!!)))))) Read the LA Times this week? Gonna pull on your coat a second, k? Thanx!

Dr. Gabrielle A. Carlson, a psychiatrist at Stony Brook University, said only 1 of every 5 children referred to her with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder actually has it.
Carlson, who has studied the increase in bipolar diagnoses, said some parents seemed to prefer a diagnosis of the disorder because the illness, thought to be largely genetic, absolves them of blame. “They don’t have to deal with their chaos, their psychiatric disorder, their marital troubles or abuse.”
Won’t somebody please think of the children? Yes, indeed, one of these days I believe we will.

At the Capitol Wednesday lawmakers held a meeting with the officials of the Texas Youth Commission, to hear how they’re coming with the sweeping reforms outlined in last session. I’m in such a pissy funk it’s taking 2 days and hard liquor to absorb the testimony.
The only M.D. who spoke said what they need to do is take behavioral control of the population, and that he would diagnose “100 percent of the inmates with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.” He then praised the cutting edge research of Harvard’s bi-polar child mafia, citing Biederman by name, as mark of credibility. There was no criticism or suggestion of internal controversy, and there won’t be, ever.
When I first heard about the Judge Rotenberg torture center it took a week of intensive reading to educate myself about the issue. That’s a lot of time and effort, and I’m motivated. So I guess it’s understandable when the general public remains ignorant of the horrifying little psychiatric secrets going on in the times in which they live; too much work!
It’s not that the Rotenberg Center doesn’t get a lot of press, it does, it’s been featured on Dateline and other mainstream investigative programs, and was even depicted in an episode of Law and Order, still, most people are not aware of its existence.
Thankfully, this month’s Mother Jones has done a compelling and readable expose in School of Shock:

Wait, work with me here. From A Fragile Revolution, a book about our little niche liberation movement:
Lord and Hutchison (1993) found that the process of empowerment usually begins with individuals getting angry or, more properly stated, becoming aware of their anger. In the context of their new awareness, they also have to have the opportunity to try out new behaviours and, paradoxically, the freedom to fail. Further, it is critical that they are supported by the external material resources that constitute the most basic of human needs, secure housing and an income, so that they can have at least some measure of control over their public, as well as private, selves. Finally, Lord & Hutchison insist that no one can become empowered on their own. They must have the company of their pee...

I just read this paper by Shery Mead, describing what’s become of alternative support systems in the age of accreditation. It resonates totally with my own experience, for which I’m grateful, as I’m still trying to get my bearings in understanding how mental health took such a bad turn, and why the old models, which do exist and to put it mildly, have not been officially discredited, are, nevertheless ignored in making policy.
In the past 25 years I’ve been a client, paraprofessional, support group member, paid direct care staffer and worked in all types of mental health agencies and settings. The difference in how things were 20 years ago compared to today are stupifying, more so because the blatant devolution is touted as progress.
The origins of peer support is ...

Victims of child abuse and domestic violence are mislabeled by professionals. They suffer from PTSD, not borderline personality disorder.
So says Dr. Heyward Ewart, author of a new book showing how child abuse mangles the personality for a lifetime. I’ve been banging this drum for years without a goddamn word of confirmation from expert circles, better savor these words, we’re not likely to see them for another 20 years:
Some authorities say that up to 60 percent of psychiatric patients, both in-patient and out-patient, report childhood histories of physical or sexual abuse or both. This estimate excludes emotional abuse and neglect. My experience confirms that very many patients are suffering from PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder) as a direct result of childhood maltreatmen...

Filed under: Obesity, Children Heart Health, Eating DisordersI know we're in the wake of an obesity epidemic, but sometimes it's easy to forget just how serious it is. Until you read something like this, that is. Little Jessica is Seven years old -- an age where she should be spending summer afternoons on her bike or at the pool. Yet she can hardly walk. Why? She weighs 400 pounds. That's at least 250 pounds more than I, a 5'7 adult female, weigh. This is a scary world we live in, where parents will let their daughter's weight problem reach such epic proportions. Kristin at Parentdish asked the question: is this child abuse? I think so. The parents control what kind of food is in their house and what kind of meals she is eating. I know that kids can be really picky eaters but when your 7-y...

I published a version of this in Suicide Survivor Notes, back in 1989:
We went to Wisconsin to see a parade. Mom’s new boyfriend drove. His name was Vern and he was a fence. He decked her out in faux couture designer labels; baubles and rhinestones and furs of mock Sable. He lasted two months. Traci was six years old.
The parade was fun. We spent the day in a turn of the century greasy-spoon tavern run by a grizzled old couple who had been married fifty years. They served homemade ribs, fries, kraut, cornbread and dark beer. Mom insisted they sit down and relax with us while we feasted on their down home cooking. “Hillbilly vittles” she called them, just like the old South. The proprietors got sentimental over her the way strangers always did. That’s because my mot...

There seems to be a lot of talk about how chaotic our society is. However, there is a heavy stigma associated with the chaos. People who are unable to function, are blamed and shunned by our society. While there is a general knowledge that alcohol and drug abuse is involved, but there is very little talk about what causes the basic problem. There is a stigmatizing assumption that people are of "weak character", inferior in some undefined way. Some related it to a lack of religious practice in their lives. Too many just write it off to laziness and a desire to live off of welfare.

Why do people self-destruct? There are as many answers as there are people who walk through the door of an emergency department. But there is one frequent common denominator. People who engage in self-destructiv...

I may be that and no they don’t.
I see my friends at the Dylan Shelter have a long thread on the PTSD articles I posted last week.
The opinion I’m about to quote captures the typical beatdown victims receive for having the gall to recognize what’s happened to them and to consider it important. Grizz’s response is instructive for handling the sheer dicksuckery that comes with the territory of constructing an accurate personal narrative:
Landshipping Legend:

…Of course theres lots of horrible things happening in life I have nothing but pity for sufferers of PTSD, women and kids who are abused physically and mentally ,what civilised person wouldnt? unfortunately amongst all the genuine heartache you get this encouragement of being a victim. Let me give you two ...

Dear Survivor:
This booklet is about the experience of being hurt on purpose by other people, and the changes in your life that it leaves behind.
You may wonder if what happened to you was bad enough to be called abuse. If you have to ask that question, it probably was. If you cannot remember large parts of your life, it almost certainly was.
I am sorry you have to read this on the internet. These things are better dealt with face-to-face. The effects of violence are best helped by different and more positive experiences with people. This is hard to do when you are looking for help on your own.
Take your time reading this. Use whatever parts seem helpful in your situation. Be patient with yourself. It will take time and work, but you can feel better.
Take care,
Joe Parker, RN

And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

In 1983 Congress passed an act declaring April National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Each April Fools day the President of the United States issues the proclamation, releases statistics on abuse and neglect and calls for greater awareness and intervention.
No one pays any attention, nor should they, considering the source. Of course back-patting child welfare agencies launch the empty gesture blue ribbon campaigns, elicit donations to pay for the prevent child abuse refrigerator magnets, issue self-congratulatory press releases &etc., none of it worth noting really, but for a little twist to underscore the Orwellian times in which we live.
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America:
I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 2007 as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. I encourage all citizens to help protect our children and work to create strong, healthy communities.
My Administration is committed to supporting children and promoting safe and stable families across America.
Childhood is a formative time, and abuse can have devastating long-term effects on young lives. In order to provide a safe environment for our young people, parents must work to protect their children from the dangers that threaten them. I want to thank the readers who are coming by regularly, and apologize for the light posting these working days. And then there’s the whole issue of content, when I do manage to bang one out, not sure if I should apologize for the thematic scope, but what the hell, I’m sorry if this is supposed to be an advocacy blog on mental illness, if it appears your interests aren’t always represented I can assure you every word I write is inspired, which might become more apparent if you’d be a little more receptive to the intuitive slant deployed herein, Faithless.

I am at the Family Violence Prevention Fund’s National Conference on Health and Domestic Violence. One of the panels that I attended examined the impact of child maltreatment on brain development.
David McCollum, MD, President of the Academy on Violence and Abuse, reviewed the medical literature on brain changes that occur after child abuse … and I am not talking about brain injury due to being hit on the head, rather I am talking about structural and functional changes in the brain that occur as a result of being exposed to the terror of family violence
Dr. McCollum briefly reviewed the biology of human brain maturation. Infants are born with an over abundance of nerve cells, called neurons, and connections between nerve cells, called synapses. As the child gets...

This has been an exhausting week for Texas government involving crimes against humanity — and that’s just Appropriations. (I kid. But not about that).
I covered the Texas Youth Commission emergency session where legislators, invoking “conspiracy and coverups” sent law enforcement out to stop the shredding of documents, and the hiring of the Special Master investigator which led to Thursday’s joint “no confidence” vote by the house and senate. The vote is symbolic, it has no legal impact, but they’re telling the governor to fire the TYC board.
I had Thursday off but saw the emotional testimony on the news, my colleagues told me most everyone in that room was crying.

There is news today of a new study about mental health problems in prison and jails. The information shows a much bigger problem than previously reported.

MSNBC.com

More than half of America's prison and jail inmates have symptoms of a mental health problem, the Justice Department estimated Wednesday. But fewer than one-third of those with problems are getting treatment behind bars. The study by the department's Bureau of Justice Statistics also found the incidence of symptoms much higher among women than men.

Compared to inmates without symptoms, these mentally troubled prisoners were more likely to have been jailed before, to get into a fight behind bars, to have been physically or sexually abused in the past and to have drug problems, the bureau said. But troubled inmates were no m...

We all remember how it caught hold of the mass media and the American public, with its irresistible themes of ambiguous evidence, suspicion if JonBenet knew her killer or not, and heinous child victimization - all entangled somehow with a world of financial privilege and childhood beauty pageants and disquieting images of a highly made-up and precociously sexy appearing 6 year old.In the relentless 24/7 cable coverage of the case, every pundit on the planet got his 15 minutes of fame, each hawking his favorite pre-existing theory: "It's usually the weird parents." "The poor parents are being unjustly accused." "The hyper-sexualized world of young children led to her b...
