I spent a good chunk of yesterday reading a book (Fresh: A Perishable History) while listening to/watching C-SPAN BookTV‘s coverage of the 2010 Harlem Book Fair (this is a special kind of book-obsessed geekery).
For whatever reason, C-SPAN has these videos set as “not shareable” and “not embeddable,” so you’ll have to go to the actual sites to see them; I have managed to provide a direct link to the video clip of interest.
First, there is a panel discussion on diversity in children’s and young adult publishing. This panel features authors Nick Burd, Jerry Craft, and Zetta Elliott, along with Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson of Just Us Books, and Vanesse J Lloyd-Sgambati of the African American Children’s Book Project.
Today, PR Newswire announced that Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, will launch a new children’s book series titled Helping Hand Books. Each volume will focus on a specific personal or social issue that commonly affects children growing up. Child psychologist Dr. Richard Woolfson, Ph.D., will provide tips for parents about how to help their kids deal with life’s daily struggles.
The first four works, scheduled for release this year, are Ashley Learns About Strangers, Emily’s First Day at School, Matthew and the Bullies, and Michael and His New Baby Brother. Sterling Children’s Books is Fergie’s publisher, and their other upcoming releases include The Case of the Barfy Birthday and Potty Animals: What to Know When You’ve Got to Go.

Books and Fabrics About Obama, along with Alzheimer’s Memories

Along with quilt fabrics featuring Obama, you’ll find many books these days, already published and those coming up, to enlighten us about his life and the Presidency. Whether one agrees with the way the election went, it behoves us to keep informed and teach our children about America past and present.
Also, your Alzheimer’s family member may be able to fill you in on Presidents and related events he/she remembers. For instance, my mother tells of my grandfather watching the train carrying President Lincoln’s body to its final resting place. He visited his Aunt Kate, who lived in a city where the train passed. So many mourners stood where they could see it, he related to her. That was among the family facts I jotted down before Mother lost recall of such e...

World War II Children’s Books to Stimulate Memories

Picture books and children’s stories often stimulate memories for Alzheimer’s patients. Sometimes reading from a book on a particular topic will initiate conversation and communication.
I mentioned that many of today’s Alzheimer’s patients lived during the World War II/Pearl Harbor years or have relatives who did. They may like to discuss these times, if even only intermittently. What they have to say will give you insight into your family history.
To find some children’s and YA books that give you more information and might help stimulate memories, visit my One Book Two Book page.

Dentistry News: Who Knew Elmo had Teeth?

Everyone loves Sesame Street, and even old-schoolers (who prefer a Blue Cookie monster to a Green Veggie Monster) can appreciate the appeal of little, lanky Elmo with the really loud voice. At the ADA Annual Session, a new children’s pop-up book, Ready, Set, Brush!, will be presented, along with a visit from Elmo today, October 16th, at 12:30 and 1:30.

Sesame Workshop teamed up with the ADA and Reader’s Digest Children’s Books to develop the 12-page book that features interactive activities like a paper toothbrush for brushing monsters’ teeth and a wheel to spin to learn fun dental care tips. According to Dr. Kimberly Harms, ADA Consumer Advisor, Ready, Set, Brush! was created to help parents teach their children about oral health “in a fun way.”

Look no further than AA is for Aardvark, the latest creation from the unjustly unfamous Mark Shulman (a friend of mine), brimming (both author and book) with wordplay, illustrations, and double letters.
Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, BooksWhat a "super" find! Even Superheroes Get Diabetes is the coolest diabetes-related book for children. Not corny. Not striving (in an obvious way) to be educational. Just a fun read that's witty and brought to life with the most beautiful comic book-style color illustrations. Truly, this is a book that any child, not just kids with diabetes, would enjoy. So here's the premise: main character Kelvin is a boy obsessed with superheroes. One day Kelvin discovers he has diabetes, but the diagnosis comes complete with a huge surprise: Kelvin has superhero powers. (That's our hero pictured at right in full super-dude attire.) These powers include the gift of flight ("fly a betes") and Kelvin uses his new-found skills to help other diabetic kids. Along the way, fic...
