The Chilean mine rescue was a great example of international cooperation and effort, much like the International Space Station. Another similarity between the two was some of the physicians involved.
Dr. J.D. Polk and other flight surgeons at NASA had, years ago, made a contingency plan for how to make the limited Space Station food stores last for months if there was a problem with re-supply. So when the Chilean government asked if NASA had any advice for how to care for the miners trapped in a similar resource-limited setting, Dr. Polk and a team went down to help, and MedPage Today wrote up a great summary of their efforts. The 33 men who have been trapped in a Chilean mine for more than two months face a host of physical and psychological health problems when they’re freed this week.
The lack of sunlight and fresh air, healthy, balanced meals, exercise and access to medical care will likely have taken their toll on the gold and copper miners — as will the mental trauma of their 68-day-long ordeal.
Chilean authorities say the first miner will be rescued late Tuesday, and the process will continue through Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
The men may have a long road ahead of them. In addition to being at risk of chronic respiratory problems, malnourishment, dehydration, heat-related illnesses, muscle l...

Their husbands — the Chilean miners trapped underground since early August — will be rescued one by one, in a specially-designed capsule called the Phoenix, starting today. And when they surface, the women who love them will be waiting.
But this isn’t any ordinary reunion.
While they awaited news of their men for over two long months, the wives, fiancees and girlfriends of the 33 trapped miners were camped out in one of the most inhospitable environments imaginable: the Atacama desert, which is the driest in the world.
Still, the quest for beauty knows no borders, and that hasn’t stopped them from lining up at the local Palumbo salon, to look as good as a girl can in a very dry climate. And we gua...

The Psychology Of Survival

I read this BBC story recently about the Chilean miners trapped for 17 days, who now face months of waiting underground while a rescue tunnel is dug. Although they are all physically well and expected to survive, they face the psychological challenge of waiting for rescue from the cave.
This story resonated with me because lately I’ve been hearing a lot about a new book, No Way Down, which was featured on NPR along with some other mountain disaster books. No Way Down covered the story of several teams of mountain climbers who were stranded on K2 when an icefall cut their ropes. Most of the climbers died although a few managed to pick their way back to base camp.
Survival stories have always been popular. Entire television series now feature teams of people pitted again...

Pet stores may want to consider posting signs near their tarantulas:
Warning! Caring for your tarantula may be dangerous for your eyes.
Of course, there are some people who feel that tarantula-owners may need to worry about more than just their eyes, but to each his or her own, right?
Part of owning a tarantula means handling it usually. While it may seem harmless, one man learned that this isn’t always so. According to an article in the most recent issue of the journal, Lancet, a 29-year-old tarantula owner in the United Kingdome sought medical help after having a red, watery eye that was sensitive to light for the previous three weeks.
An ophthalmologist found tiny hair-like substances in the man’s cornea, some of which were much too small to remove, even with the tiniest fo...
