CDC researchers published the first national-level analysis that compares trends in primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM) by age group and race/ethnicity; the analysis found that recent increases in P&S syphilis in this population are occurring mostly among young MSM, aged 15-29 years.
Back to School is Easier with Help from the Government
The start of a new school year is an important time for planning and preparation. For millions of children and teenagers, it’s time to plan new academic schedules and activities. For parents and guardians it’s a good time to plan financial support for school-aged children. There are several programs and resources available for families who qualify for federal assistance, including low cost lunches and affordable health insurance.
From the NCHHSTP Newsroom: The CDC’s first multi-year estimates from its national HIV incidence surveillance find that overall, the annual number of new HIV infections in the United States was relatively stable. However, HIV infections increased among young men who have sex with men (MSM) between 2006 and 2009, driven by alarming increases among young, black MSM – the only subpopulation to experience a sustained increase during the time period. http://1.usa.gov/osnWKF (Source: BHIC)

True Beauty Is Found Underneath the Skin: An Interview with Susanne Veder Berger

Since birth, Susanne Veder Berger was taught to hide herself, to cover the six-inch “port-wine stain” that dominated nearly the entire left side of her face. (Doctors call the condition “naevus flammeus,” a vascular birthmark resulting from deep dilated capillaries below the surface of the skin.)
When Susanne was only four years old, she was taught how to apply a mask of thick makeup to her face each day in an effort to avoid teasing and humiliation. Susanne did this literally every day of her life for more than 50 years as she attended Seneca College in Toronto, got married, moved to the New York City suburbs and raised two children.
Conditioned to believe that if the mask ever slipped — from careless application of her makeup or perhaps by shedding a tear — the world ...

Doornfontein, Johannesburg – July 2011
There are approximately 250,000 people living in slum buildings of inner-city Johannesburg. These migrants from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa are without documentation, rights, or money.
Inside these informal settlements unhygienic and overcrowded living conditions prevail. There is no sanitation or waste management, poor access to clean water, electricity and to basic health care. MSF is helping residents by providing primary health care, referrals to the public sector clinics, and providing materials for cleaning in some of these buildings. (Source: MSF Blogs)

Farmer's Market: McKarren Park or Main Street Lafayette?
At about age seven, my favorite movie was Baby Boom, featuring Diane Keaton as a fancy New York City businesswoman who inherited a distant relative’s daughter, moved to the ‘country’ (well, Connecticut) and learned to can applesauce. I’ve never quite approached fancy businesswoman status, and I’ve yet to can anything, but last week I moved to Lafayette, Indiana, after years of living and working on the east coast, and I can’t help thinking that seven-year-old-me would approve. The so-called good life is bound to be easier here, with no dirty subways, crowded commutes, tiny railroad apartments or exorbitant rents, right? Or will I perish for lack of constant movement, new faces and ample vegetarian restaurants? I supp...

July 9, 2011
Misrata children play behind a vendor of rebel merchandise. Following months of fierce conflict, parents and medical staff are concerned for the mental well-being of the children of Misrata. After a nearly three-month long siege, fighting has ended in the center of Misrata. The front line has pulled back to outside the city. However, while the situation has changed since the first Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) team arrived on April 18, bombing continues nearby, producing scores of victims.
MSF has been present in Libya since February 25 and is presently expanding its assistance in the cities of Misrata, Benghazi, Zintan, in camps along the Libyan-Tunisian border, and on the Italian islands of Lampedusa and Sicily. MSF has offered to establish activities in pro-Gaddafi areas...

So you’re living in NYC, and you just can’t understand why your friends visiting from rural Ohio seem so overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the place. Or maybe you’re living the good life in small town, U.S.A., and you wish your city friends who came to visit could just chill out and relax for 97 seconds. Are these sort of differences between city and country temperaments all in your head? Well, yes — but that doesn’t mean you’re making them up: It turns out urban brains really do behave differently from rural ones.
The Economist reports on a study just published in Nature by German researcher Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg which used MRI scans to look at the effect of stress on the brains of city- and country-dwellers. Lindenberg and colleagues found the amy...

Envisioning an Internet Center for Homeless Individuals: One Group’s Quest to Reduce the Digital Divide
By Rebecca Orrick, Research Assistant, Center for Urban and Regional Affairs
“While it is important for anyone to have digital literacy skills, it is especially important for individuals who are homeless. Finding housing and other resources to get off the streets is infinitely easier if you know how to perform basic computer functions like sending an email. While most people take for granted that they know how to perform basic tasks on the internet, the reality remains that a significant portion of the homeless population is still digitally illiterate. Increasing the number of people who are self sufficient digitally decreases the number of people ...

Imagine growing up in a city environment where you rarely see a tree, a patch of grass, or a bird. Imagine having nowhere to play a game of baseball or play catch with your dog. Imagine a place where the only thing summer brings is sweltering indoor temperatures, with no vacation or fun outside of playing in the fire-hydrant spray.
For many children, this is inner-city life and the only life they know.
But the Fresh Air Fund is a non-profit that has been giving free summer experiences to poor children in New York City since 1877. During that time, they’ve helped millions of children have a very different kind of summer vacation — a chance to breath some fresh air in a different, less urban environment.
They need more host families living in a northeastern state this summer. Continue re...

I carry my camera around Manhattan, especially on weekends when my wife and I go adventuring around the City. Sometimes when conditions line up correctly I might get some interesting shots. This occurs when the light is right, my battery is charged, and I remember to insert the memory card. The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend was beautiful and sunny, and we decided to walk ...Read More (Source: Jeffrey M. http://bit.ly/jMYPuq
by Anita Hairston
Equity Blog
According to a recent report, designing our streets to move vehicles rather than people, puts a significant burden on low income people and communities of color across this country. The findings from Transportation for America’s new 2011 “Dangerous by Design” http://t4america.org/resources/dangerousbydesign2011/ report are alarming. The share of pedestrian deaths among communities of color exceeds their share of the total population. [@groxie]

By Tad DeHavenLocal officials, like their federal and state counterparts, spend other people’s money. Policymakers are naturally unlikely to spend other people’s money as carefully as they would their own. This situation is exacerbated when local officials spend money obtained from federal taxpayers. At least when local taxpayers foot the bill, they have an incentive to keep an eye on how their money is spent. That incentive is largely nonexistent when the money comes from Washington.
HUD community development programs illustrate what happens when the federal government severs the relationship between local officials and local taxpayers. Originally targeted to large cities in decline, community development funding is spread widely to communities rich and poor, large and small.

By Tim LynchYesterday, Obama's attorney general, Eric Holder, held a press conference and announced that Khalid Shaik Mohammed (KSM) would be prosecuted for war crimes before a military tribunal. It's probably fair to say, as some newspapers have noted, that the idea of bringing KSM to New York City to be tried in civilian court for the 9/11 atrocity was Holder's "signature" decision since becoming attorney general--and that that idea is now dead. However, Obama and Holder conceded a place for tribunals more than a year ago and they could never really offer a good explanation as to why some persons would go to civilian court and why others would go before tribunals. Like Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, Obama and his people would just sorta decide case-by-case.

By Ilya ShapiroThis is a big week for private property rights. Two epic eminent domain struggles are playing out on opposite sides of the country.
First, National City, California, is ground zero for eminent domain abuse. City officials declared several hundred properties blighted even before conducting a blight study that was riddled with problems. The city wants to seize and bulldoze a youth community center (CYAC) that has transformed the lives of hundreds of low-income kids, so a wealthy developer can build high-rise luxury condos:

CYAC has numerous volunteers, including local law enforcement officers, providing free mentoring in boxing as well as academics. The gym is famous for getting kids off the street and back into school. As Rick Reilly explained in a feature in Sport...

I went in to my local Barnes & Noble the other day and found that things had changed considerably. The first thing I noticed when I walked in the front door was a huge display for their Nook book reader. It was a large exhibit which blocked your entrance to the rest of the store. The Nook’s were available with different options and a huge array of covers and accessories.

As I walked past the display, the rest of the store came into focus. Instead of books, I was greeted with all sorts of games, kits, and flashy marketing. I felt like I was in a toy store. The visual stimulation was almost overwhelming. It was like a blog post in ALL CAPS… Everything was shouting at me.

Getting around a city can be hard when you’re in a wheelchair because some places simply aren’t designed for wheels. Wheelmap is an iPhone app for wheelchair users which tells you about the accessibility of nearby restaurants, cafes, clubs, museums, and other locations.
Locations are color-coded on a map to show how accessible they are. The current location, but also any place around the world, can be viewed. Maps are based on OpenStreetMap data, and accessibility data about locations can be modified and sent back to the servers by users from within the app. There is also a corresponding website showing the same information online.

Or just think of any product — diet food, skin care, insurance company, car, medication — that features celebrity testimonials or the words of other consumers who’ve achieved “incredible results.”
For these common advertising ploys, you can thank John B. Watson, the founder of behaviorism here in America.
After getting fired from his academic post at Johns Hopkins, Watson began working for one of the biggest advertising agencies in New York City, J. Walter Thompson. (He was dismissed for his scandalous divorce. Short story: He fell in lo...

About 60 percent of children in “out-of-home placements” here are African-American, although African-Americans make up 18 percent of the county’s child population. Dubbed “racial disproportionality,” this imbalance is found in child welfare systems nationwide. Scholars and child welfare officials debate the causes of disproportionality. Some believe it starts with bias in institutions that refer children to CYF, like hospitals and schools.
I've written previously about Healthcare Information Exchange Sustainability and the need for Healthcare Information Services Providers (HISPs) to serve as gateways connecting individual EHRs.
How should HISPs be funded and how can we encourage HISP vendors to connect every little guy in the country?
We've started to think about this in Massachusetts. (Source: Healthcare IT News Blog)

Actress Kristin Davis recently appeared on The Late Show With Craig Ferguson to talk about a new show she’s developing for NBC, based on The Happiness Project, a memoir written by Gretchen Rubin. Beyond our happiness (no pun intended) that Davis is finally done working on the Sex and the City franchise (we may have gotten into the show, but those awful movies pushed us over the edge), we’re actually excited to see how Rubin’s book translates into a sitcom.
If you’re not familiar with her, Rubin is a bestselling author who decided to take on the subject of what makes humans happy, resulting in a personal memoir about her own experiences and experiments in improving her mindset, as well as scientific research, philosophical theories, and practical advice on the topic ...

When a pregnant woman goes to work and ends up with a dead baby, something is terribly wrong.
Lissedia Batista was a 27-year-old Spanish teacher who taught at Exploration Academy in the Bronx and was sixteen weeks pregnant. Given today’s economy, I’m certain that Batista was grateful to have a job with the New York City Board of Education. As a native New Yorker, I am keenly aware of how competitive it is to land such a position. Working for the Board of Education traditionally meant job security — a pension and a strong union that took care of its members.
Like many young teachers, Batista had compassion. She attempted to stop a fight between two male students, was pushed out of the way, and subsequently fell to the floor. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital, but unfort...

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.
~ John Lennon
On Dec. 8th, 1980, I was in bed listening to the radio when suddenly, in a voice labored by heavy breathing and halting words, the disc jockey broke the news that John Lennon had been shot and killed in front of his New York City apartment building. The news ransacked my brain.
The Beatles weren’t just a rock band; they gave us an identity. Their songs weren’t simply catchy tunes or stray memorable lyrics. The music told us who we were. It pointed us in a whole new direction. The simplicity and ...

By Walter OlsonWe are told constantly that government can play a beneficial role in the marketplace by taking steps to make sure consumers are more fully informed about the risks of the goods and services they use. But what happens when the government itself helps spread health and safety information that is false or misleading? That question came up recently in the controversy over New York City’s misleading nutrition-scare ad campaign, and it now comes up again in a controversy over a new database of complaints about consumer products sponsored by the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
As part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), Congress mandated that the CPSC create a “publicly available consumer product safety information database...

By Ilya ShapiroAs the legal battle against Obamacare continues, we got good constitutional news today in another aspect of health care law. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals, based in New York City, ruled that statutes restricting commercial speech about prescription drug-related data gathering are unconstitutional. The court emphasized that the First Amendment protects “[e]ven dry information, devoid of advocacy, political relevance, or artistic expression.”
The case, IMS Health v. Sorrell, concerned a Vermont law that sought to constrain various aspects of prescriber-identifiable data gathering, dissemination, and use. The state argued that such information collection and exchange could induce doctors to alter their prescribing practices in ways that impose additional costs on ...

Perhaps ironically for someone who had served as an antitrust enforcer, his first great accomplishment as chancellor of the New York City schools was to centralize control in his own office. Calculating test scores accurately revealed that they barely budged during his eight-year tenure. The MAGAZINE of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Spring 2010
Can an integrated neighborhood in Southwest Baltimore help overturn decades of race-based assumptions about the origins of health disparities?
“And the researchers who have come to this neighborhood to investigate this long-suspected but never before proven notion—that poor health is not so much about race, as place—may eventually rewrite the way health disparities are viewed and treated in this country.”

It looks like New York City is leading the way for public health safety by introducing a public smoking ban in all public parks, malls, plazas, beaches and playgrounds or risk a $50 fine:
Research showed, he said, that someone seated within three feet of a smoker — even in the open air — was exposed to roughly the same levels of secondhand smoke as someone sitting indoors in the same situation.
What took so long? Go, New York. I hope you succeed. Next up: Charging parents who smoke in their homes occupied by minors with child negligence.

Are you living in a sexually satisfied city, like Columbus, Ohio? Or, like residents of Manchester, New Hampshire, are you more likely sexually unsatisfied?
A new survey from Men’s Health magazine released a new list this week of “sexually satisfied” cities, as well as those who fare not so well. They looked at a number of statistical factors to arrive at these admittedly arbitrary distinctions — birth rates (I suppose under the assumption that those cities with higher birth rates have a higher rate of sexual activity as well), sales of sex toys and condoms, and rates of sexually transmitted diseases. One could certainly argue with these choices.
But without further ado, we bring you the sexually most satisfied cities in the U.S.:

The next time a giant corporation practices gross negligence that results in a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (or anywhere else), we’ll be prepared. MIT’s Senseable City Lab has developed Seaswarm — a fleet of high-tech robots that talk via Wi-Fi and GPS, and eat and clean oil off the water’s surface. Then they purify the oil by pulling around a conveyor belt made of a reusable, oil-absorbing material. And poof, the water is back to its old self – we hope.via GOODPost from: BlissTreeMIT Develops Oil-Cleaning Robot Army, But Too Late for the Gulf (Source: Breastfeeding 1-2-3)

I’ve had the clandestine identity writer since I first scribbled in crayon on the living room wall. But there was always one small problem: talent. So the first thing I needed to do was to go out there and get me some of that God-given talent that God hadn’t given me yet. Here are the lessons I’ve learned.
Lesson One: Getting some skill
I took a noncredit course at the New School in New York City called Finding Your Voice In Non-Fiction. It seemed perfect. For 10 weeks 20 of us sat around and critiqued each other’s essays. This confirmed something I had suspected: Some people were better writers than me. I could tell. Their writing had whole sentences and nifty words. They had nice little paragraphs and compelling stories about something that really happened to them.
I learned ...

There are many facets to the debate about the Muslim community center and mosque proposed for the site of a former Burlington Coat Factory near Ground Zero in southern Manhattan. My colleague David Boaz’s observation on the United States pluralist founding tradition was a delight. Important as they are, I’m put off by the domestic political ramifications (1, 2, 3, 4), if only because of the crassness and opportunism that inhabit all politics.
There is a strategic dimension to the story. This episode is signaling to audiences around the world the current relationship between the United States and Islam. These audiences might support or oppose the United States and act accordingly to undermine or support terrorist groups. For these people, knowledge of a Muslim community, activ...

90,000 migratory birds die every year from colliding with skyscrapers in New York alone. The Lights Out Campaign, which started in Chicago, encourages tall buildings to dim their lights during peak migratory season every fall. While it seems like the lights on skyscrapers might ward off birds, it actually attracts them.
The Empire State building, the Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center (among other New York skyscrapers) will all be dimming their lights this fall. The campaign won’t only save birds, it will save energy as well. If a 2.5 million square foot building shut off all of its lights after midnight this fall, it would conserve 750,000 kilowatts and save $120,000.

According to the National Weather Service, New York City is headed for the hottest July on record, with a daily average of 81.6 degrees, just a sliver above the current record of 81.4 degrees set in 1999. To beat past records, the average temperature for the rest of the month will have to be 79 degrees, which it’s just barely set to do. Multiple heat waves and days spent sweating next to our fans, we believe it, and we’re reviewing tips for staying cool and working out safely in the summer heat.
Jokes about global warming aside, the real question is: New Yorkers, what do you want more – bragging rights or relief from the heat?

City of Chicago decision was to say that McDonald would have no impact on government’s ability to keep guns “out of the hands of criminals and terrorists.” This was a reference to legislation that Bloomberg supports that would allow the federal government to bar anyone the Attorney General thinks is a terrorist from purchasing a firearm. Not convicted of a crime in support of terrorism — that would make them a felon and already unable to purchase or own a firearm. Remember when Tom Jones was the tackiest thing on two legs?
I realized I was way out of the mainstream in my taste in men when I saw all those women throwing underwear on stage. To me, Tom Jones was the epitome of sleaze. His big hits were some of the most reviled songs of my youth.
But then I had not seen Tom Jones in 1964, before Vegas got hold of him. Pretty hot, if you ask me.
Now, half a century later, he’s releasing a brand-new album. “Praise and Blame” comes out on July 26. Believe it or not, Tom Jones is looking kind of hot again.

Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) was mildly entertaining to watch on Sex and the City. But no one in real life actually acts like that, right? Wrong. Christina Saunders wanted to become more confident, so she slept with 1,000 men in ten years, so she could be just like America’s favorite cougar. (Apparently, she thought emulating a TV character was a good idea.)
Saunders admits that she took things a little too far (ya think?), and hopes that men won’t be put off by her. We think Saunders should befriend members of the band Kiss, who might be the only people on earth who’ve slept with more people than she has. Personally, just thinking about having sex that many times makes us tired. Now we have a headache.

By Glenna Crooks. On Sunday July 4, HealthDay News reported on a June 30 Environmental Health Perspectives item that the health benefits of cycling in an urban environment outweigh the risks. Huh? I asked myself.
I live in Center City Philadelphia and far too many cyclists – I’ll go out on a limb and say a majority – are a menace. They ride on pedestrian walkways, sometimes IPod hearing-impaired, weaving through pedestrians. They ride on the wrong side of the roads, the wrong way down one-way streets and weave between traffic lanes. They do not stop for red lights. In fact, some bikes don’t have brakes.
I’ve been nearly hit twice by cyclists running red lights, coming from between trucks and therefore not visible to a pedestrian until they appear suddenly, inches away. And, at 6:...

Although the grant would be capped, Pfizer would be able to request additional funds for every $50 million invested in the property. “It’s a performance-based grant - very modest,” Peter Chapman, deputy chief administrative officer for economic and community development, tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch, who adds the tax break is critical to hold on to the jobs.
Such incentives, which some decry as corporate welfare, are regularly used to encourage companies to relocate or retain jobs, although results don’t always match expectations. Two years ago, the widely used practic...

Justice Thomas in McDonald v. Chicago:
With the inquiry appropriately narrowed, I believe this case presents an opportunity to reexamine, and begin the process of restoring, the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment agreed upon by those who ratified it.

The purpose of this article is to provide a roadmap to welcome the Privileges or Immunities Clause back into constitutional jurisprudence. The Slaughter-House Cases “sapped the...

Eco-Friendly Family: Mother and Daughter Bike for Land Conservation

You think your morning ride to work was rough? Try biking cross-country. Helen and Al Steussy, a mother-daughter team, are on day nine of 50 in their 3,630-mile journey from Oregon to New Hampshire. They’re doing it all in the name of land conservation. The Steussys aim to raise $20,000 to stop current trends of city sprawl. Each day, 5,000 acres of land are developed in the U.S. That’s a lot of land that could be an eco-friendly nature preserve, but instead becomes a parking lot, an office park, high-rise condos, a Target, or some other big box store.
Money raised will be donated to Red-tail Conservancy, the Land Trust Alliance, and local land trusts the Steussys find along the way. Track their progress and donate on their website.

By Ilya ShapiroToday is a big victory for gun rights and a bigger one for liberty. The Supreme Court has correctly decided that state actions violating the right to keep and bear arms are no more valid than those taken by the federal government.
It could not have been otherwise: the Fourteenth Amendment, coming on the heels of the Civil War, says clearly that never again would the Constitution tolerate state oppressions, and that all individuals possess certain fundamental rights. It is equally clear that the right to keep and bear arms is one of those deeply rooted fundamental rights, not least because the Framers thought so highly of it as to enumerate it in the Second Amendment.
Still, Justice Alito’s plurality opinion leaves a lot to be desired, in that his ultimately correct con...

Members of 12 Step Fellowships such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Al-anon and Adult Children of Alcoholics will recognise these themes as being part and parcel of everyday life in recovery. These themes may also be familiar to one of the stars, Kirsten Davis, who is in recovery from alcoholism.
An Indiana University press release says;
Remember The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink? These films illustrate what Maresa Murray calls the "friends as family" concept. Today, television viewers see a myriad of shows with similar themes.
Think Sex and the City, Entourage, Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle. "We are currently seeing some of the same themes from 20-25 years ago in families, relationships and media," says Murray. "One ex...

I asked my cousin, who studies urban planning at Berkeley, the following (the question was provoked by my experiences with patients who come from desperate poverty here in Baltimore, something that I encountered only rarely among my Manhattan patients):I keep comparing Balto. and NY. with regard to poverty and racial segregation. Can you point me to a good academic treatment of this topic? E.g.: Manhattan is segregated by income, obviously, but is it segregated by race when income is controlled for? And what is more influential in explaining Baltimore's neighborhood patterns, income or race?I found her answer interesting. It sounds like you're more interested in empirical evidence than theory (?), but I know more about the theory (and I think the theory is actually more interesting) so I'll...

By Steve H. HankeThe New York Times editorialists are at it again. June 12th’s lead editorial, “The Latest Work Dodge: A Shutdown,” frets over the specter of the New York state government being shut down because Albany’s legislators can’t agree on a budget. Well, the Times must have breathed a collective sigh of relief late Monday (June 14th). That’s when the State Senate passed Governor Paterson’s 11th temporary budget extender, which allowed state offices to hang out “open for business” signs on Tuesday.
But, the Times wants a final state budget and claims that more taxing and borrowing and maybe some cuts in school aid will do the trick. One item that the Times wants off the table in Albany is property taxes. According to...

Asian and African female refugees arriving in the U.S. usually have pretty limited options in the working world, as culture shock and language barriers make adjusting to their new home incredibly difficult. But there’s one skill common among refugee women that doesn’t get lost in translation: Farming. That’s why the Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas City started the New Roots for Refugees Farm, in a partnership with Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture.
New Roots For Refugees provides refugee women the opportunity to farm on a quarter-acre plot and sell their wares at farmers’ markets around Kansas City. The women gradually take on more business responsibility, including buying raw materials, taking marketing and English classes during the w...

By Glenna Crooks. During my years in the Administration I was sometimes directed to draft responses the President would send in reply to letters he’d received from individual citizens.
Sometimes, rather than drafting the letter for him, I’d be directed to reply on the President’s behalf. Such was the case when the White House directed I write to a young boy from Texas.
His father – a young, healthy man – collapsed and died suddenly during an after-work run on the local high school track. Later, at the funeral home, the director complimented the boy’s Mother about her generosity in having donated her husband’s corneas. But there was a problem: it had not been her decision. In fact, until that moment she had not even know her husband’s corneas were removed.
The ‘donation’...

Relationships: 5 Dating Rules to Break

Waiting by the phone? Lame. Just call him.
Dating is confusing, so we make up rules to follow. Amid the chaos of trying to interpret texts, voicemails, and morning-after behavior, there are feelings to be hurt, so we like to give ourselves some safety rails. Problem is, even though dating rules are meant to help us succeed, we don’t always think they’re true, or that they apply to everyone. Whether you’re a Sandy Olsson-type or a true Betty Rizzo, we think it’s time to grow up and break these dating-rule dinosaurs:
1. Men Should Always Pay. We call bullshit. If someone – anyone – invites us to a specific restaurant or event, sure, we’d like them to pay. Same goes if we do the inviting. There’s nothing wrong with someone paying for your meal, but we b...

By Tim LynchPolice in New York City conducted 575,000 “stops” in 2009. The actual number could be higher–depending on the number of stops the police decided not to record on paper. The ’stop and search’ is a legally dubious tactic that persists largely because white, middle-class people are mostly unaffected by it. It is bad enough when the officers are in uniform, but gets worse when the police are in plain clothes and approach people rapidly. The police “target” may have only seconds to determine whether he/she is facing a mugging or a police stop. More here.
Seven years after receiving millions of dollars in tax breaks to create jobs in New York, Pfizer is eliminating up to 1,400 workers amid a vast consolidation that was accelerated by its $68 billion purchase last year of Wyeth. Along with the cuts and musical job chairs, which come on top of 2,000 other positions already eliminated, the drugmaker is also putting a midtown office building up for sale, The New York Times notes.
Pfizer will retain its midtown headquarters on East 42nd Street, as well as 4,400 employees, but now faces an angry and embarassed Bloomberg administration, which wants to recover twice the $12 million in tax breaks awarded in 2003. A spokesman for the city’s Economic Development Corporation tells the paper the city can pursue twice the amount of breaks if Pfizer...

Gender Stereotypes: Blame the Babies?

MSN’s HealthDay reporter Jenifer Goodwin reports on research out of London’s City University that found stereotypical gender preferences in babies as young as nine months old. While we may like to think that we live in an increasingly gender-neutral world, where children of both sexes are raised to ignore limiting stereotypes, that may not be the case. At least not yet. When presented with a selection of toys, baby boys in the study ignored the dolls and went for the trucks and balls. Baby girls in the sample group grabbed the dolls and plastic food. The research went further, testing the traditional boy/girl color divide of blue and pink. Baby boys were shown a blue teddy bear and pink one. That experiment produced inconclusive results, as the boys showed no interest in the te...

Chapter 3: 80s Hair Metal
I have this pet theory that the essence of what these here United States are all about can be summed by Van Halen. (Here me out – you’ll kill at the next happy hour.) We talk a big game about freedom, liberty, and democracy, but the most honest quote about our country came from one of its worst presidents, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, when he noted that “the business of America is business.” It took us almost a century to go to war over the idea that black people maybe weren’t property, and that was long after...

Beth Sufian is one of the oldest survivors of Cystic Fibrosis. As an attorney, the Houstonian has fought for the medical rights of thousands of patients — even from her own hospital bed — and travels the country teaching parents how to advocate for their children.
She took a few minutes to talk with Disruptive Women’s Wendy Grossman.
Q: You’ve dedicated your career to fighting for people living with CF.
A: Yes.
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your work?
A: Working with CF is about half of what I do — the other half is serious medical conditions.
Q: Like what?
A: I run a hotline for people with CF from all over the country to call and get information about health insurance and benefits and rights and employment. We’ve been in existence since 1998, and w...

Check out these three super-cool charitable non-profits run by smart women who help empower other smart women:
The Tia Foundation: Dedicated to providing health care strategies (not relief) for residents of rural Mexico. What makes Tia (“aunt” in Spanish) different from other NGOs is that it’s more of a support system. Its founder, Laura Libman, doesn’t believe in creating dependency on an outside source. She practices the “teach a woman to fish” rather than the “give a woman a fish” model.
The Lodge at Woodloch exterior
We think this destination spa is pretty cool: The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, Pennsylvania, two-and-a-half hours by car northwest of New York City. With 75 acres of lush woodlands and pristine lakes, it’s pretty perfect for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, and fishing. On-site classes include everything from yoga, pilates, and cardio kick-boxing to photography, drawing, and cooking demonstrations.
Yes, cuisine at the Lodge is healthy, but it’s not diet food. Tree restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and (with advance notice), its chef will even customize menus to accommodate your dietary needs.

Last weekend, Tina Brown and the Daily Beast hosted the “Women in the World” summit in New York City. The three-day conference brought together more than 300 female leaders in their respective fields including Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan, Meryl Streep, Barbara Walters, and Katie Couric, to talk about women’s stories and possible solutions to problems facing them in the 21st century. In our video of the day, Diane Sawyer discusses the conference with Tina Brown here. For more info and videos from the conference, go to The Daily Beast.

What do rare soul 45 records from Detroit have in common with Blisstree? We both want to make you feel good.
One of Blisstree’s favorite live and radio DJs, Mr. Fine Wine, who’s also a Detroit soul music authority, has hosted “Downtown Soulville,” his stellar weekly radio show, for almost 16 years (91.1 FM in the New York City/New Jersey area).
Luckily, for those of us who don’t live within reach of those airwaves, Mr. Fine Wine’s hour-long broadcasts stream live and are archived online at the Jersey City-based independent radio station WFMU. We dare you to listen and stand still.
In honor of Blisstree’s launch, we asked Mr. Fine Wine to share with us a rare soul tune that to him defines what Blisstree is all about. His pick? “The Queen&#8221...

By David RittgersI recently appeared on the Patt Morrison Show in southern California opposite Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in a segment that begs the question of what gun control laws will look like if the Supreme Court incorporates the Second Amendment with the McDonald v. Chicago case. The audio of the program is here, but the issue merits a more detailed discussion than I could get into on the radio.
The litigation over the boundaries of the Second Amendment in the District of Columbia previews the kinds of gun laws that will face court scrutiny.
First, certain restrictions on the purchase of firearms will likely be overturned. California maintains a “safe gun roster” of handguns that manufacturers have successfully submitted for safety testing. Followi...

The following interview with Dr. Jan Gurley, a board-certified internist physician, was recently featured on the Better Health blog.
Dr. Jan Gurley just returned from a mission trip to Haiti, 5 weeks after the earthquake hit. In this audio clip, she relays a horrific first-hand account of the current realities of life in Port Au Prince. With no running water, bathrooms, or place to shelter – and packed into a field with 100,000 people – some young women are choosing to stop drinking water in an effort to commit suicide.
Dr. Gurley describes the loss of human dignity associated with the crisis in Haiti, including a near stampede when sanitary napkins were offered in a crowd of women. She explains that the place is becoming dangerous – and the screams of women being raped i...

LGBT ally Rep Diane Watson will not run for re-election
by Karen Ocamb
February 11, 2010
Longtime LGBT ally Congressmember Diane E. Watson (D-CA) formally announced Thursday that she is not seeking re-election. She wants Karen Bass, the outgoing Speaker of the California Assembly and another pro-LGBT ally, to replace her representing California’s 33rd Congressional District.
Watson’s openly gay legislative deputy Charles Stewart describes below how his boss told her staff she was retiring. But first something about Watson.
I first met Diane Watson in the early 1990s at AIDS activist Phill Wilson’s house for a meet and greet with the California State Senator, where she’d been serving since 1978. First thing that struck me was how tall she was – statuesque and elegant and smart. Tu...

During that time, they’ve helped more than 1.7 million children have a very different kind of summer vacation — a chance to breath some fresh air in a different, less urban environment.
In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family program...

Researchers find ‘broad spectrum’ antiviral that fights multitude of viruses
By Enrique Rivero
February 01, 2010
Compound could be used against HIV-1, Nipah, Ebola and other deadly viruses
Viruses are insidious creatures. They differ from each other in many ways, and they can mutate — at times seemingly at will, as with HIV — to resist a host of weapons fired at them. Complicating matters further is that new viruses are constantly emerging.

One potential weapon is a small-molecule “broad spectrum” antiviral that will fight a host of viruses by attacking them through some feature common to an entire class of viruses. For example, there are two categories of viruses: lipid-enveloped and non-enveloped. Enveloped viruses are surrounded by a membrane that in effect ...

Study solves puzzle that eluded scientists for 20 years
* Finding should help development of new HIV/AIDS medicines
* Allows scientists to see how Merck and Gilead drugs work
LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Scientists say they have solved a crucial puzzle about the AIDS virus after 20 years of research and that their findings could lead to better treatments for HIV.
British and U.S. researchers said they had grown a crystal that enabled them to see the structure of an enzyme called integrase, which is found in retroviruses like HIV and is a target for some of the newest HIV medicines.

by Neal Broverman

January 27, 2010
Zelda Rubinstein, the Poltergeist actress and HIV activist, died Wednesday at the Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 76.
The 4-foot, 3-inch actress had various health problems following a mild heart attack she suffered late last year.
Rubinstein will be remembered by gays for being one of the first celebrities to lend her name and face to an HIV/AIDS public awareness campaign aimed at gay men. In a series of billboards and posters that blanketed Los Angeles in the mid ’80s, Rubinstein portrayed “Mother,” a sweet maternal figure who urged her “sons” to play safe. The posters soon spread nationally and then internationally.
The actress spoke to Advocate.com rec...

During this blizzard of 2010, I thought about the difficulties an ambulance would have reaching someone in need on an unplowed street—let alone if the person were significantly obese and hard to transport on even an ordinary day. Then today I read an astounding Washington Post article that noted “a patient between 400 pounds and 600 pounds is part of every workweek for many crews throughout the [DC metro] region.” Really? I thought this only happened on occasion in select areas shown on the Discovery Channel. Apparently, not the case.
Emergency medical crews are making hefty investments (no pun intended) in super-sized, ambulatory equipment. According to the article, “sales of stretchers designed specifically for very large patients were expected to reach $50 million in 2...

Well, having argued that petitioners’ counsel Alan Gura insufficiently covered the argument that the Second Amendment should be “incorporated” against the states via the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause, the NRA has now filed a brief that fails even to reference the four biggest cases regarding incorporation and substantive due process. That is, the NRA reply brief contains no ment...

Long Strange Trip
At home, watching the sun rise might mean a sleepless night followed by what would surely be an achy, lethargic day. But on a train, ushering in the dawn is a badge of honor.
Most of us in the lounge car at 5:00 in the morning could not sleep in coach or even in the roomette. Our compensation was the dramatic landscape that inspired novelist Willa Cather accented by a deepening pink and coral sky.
As we awaited the opening of the dining car – and that first cup of ...

This study examined the relationships between HIV-related stigma and a range of demographic, social, physical and health characteristics. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the overall strength and direction of these relationships. Twenty-four studies of PLHIV, conducted in North America and published in peer-reviewed journals between January of 2000 and November of 2007, were examined and their findings integrated. The heterogeneity of reported results was also assessed and examined. Our review revealed substantial variability in the ways researchers measure participants’ HIV-related stigma as well as their physical, emotional and mental health. In spite of this variability, high stigma level was consistently and significantly associated with low social support (r = -0.369, p&l...

New research based on a novel mathematical model predicts that a wave of drug-resistant HIV strains will emerge in San Francisco within the next five years. These strains could prove disastrous by hindering control of the HIV pandemic.

In a study published Jan. 14 on the website of the journal Science, researchers from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and the University of California, San Francisco’s HIV AIDS Program at San Francisco General Hospital, developed a complex network model that tracks the transmission of multiple strains of HIV.

The model can be used to predict drug resista...

By John Hoeffel
January 26, 2010
In a 9-3 vote, the Los Angeles City Council today gave its final approval to an ordinance that will shut down hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries and impose strict rules on the location and operation of the dispensaries that are allowed.
The measure passed quickly, without debate.
The ordinance, which the council first began discussing more than 4 1/2 years ago, will cap the number of dispensaries at 70 but make an exception to allow all those that registered with the city in 2007 and have remained open. City officials believe that number is around 150.

LA City Council members talk about their marijuana use

Jan. 26, 2010
The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday [approved] a new ordinance that would shut down most medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. It would place a cap of 70, with up to about 140 pot shops grandfathered in. KPCC surveyed councilmembers about whether they’d ever smoked pot – medical or otherwise.
It was 1968, and Councilman Tom LaBonge was a high school kid sweet on a girl. She offered him some pot.

By Ilya ShapiroYesterday the Supreme Court granted the NRA’s motion for divided argument in McDonald v. Chicago. What this means is that Alan Gura’s 30 minutes of argument time on behalf of Chicagoland gun owners just became 20, with 10 going to former Solicitor General Paul Clement, whom the NRA hired at the last minute to pursue this motion and argument. (Full disclosure: Alan Gura is a friend of mine, and of Cato.)
The NRA’s motion was premised on the idea that Alan had not fully presented the substantive due process argument for selective incorporation of the Second Amendment — presumably out of an outsized concern for the Privileges or Immunities Clause arguments about which I’ve previously blogged and written a law review article. This is a highl...

Following the emergency appeal filed by the Prop 8 team, the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled 5-4 that the federal marriage trial may not be videocast for public viewing at other federal courthouses. The earlier plan to upload trial video to the court’s website already had been nixed by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ Chief Judge Kozinksi, who decided there are technical problems to be worked out before webcasting will be possible.
The high court’s majority decision is troubling in its accommodation of Prop 8’s proponents’ supposed fears of harm. As the dissent ...

By Ilya ShapiroI recently blogged about an interesting op-ed in which Ken Klukowski and Ken Blackwell of the American Civil Rights Union argue that the Supreme Court need not overturn The Slaughter-House Cases while “incorporating” the right to bear arms against the states. (Josh Blackman fisked the article in more depth here.) This piece was essentially a distillation of the ACRU’s amicus brief in McDonald v. City of Chicago, which ultimately argues, like Cato’s brief, that Chicago’s gun ban is unconstitutional.
It has come to my attention, however, that I mischaracterized one aspect of the Kens’ op-ed (sorry about that): while they are indeed against overturning Slaughter-House, the authors still seek to apply the Second Amendment right...

Once again, New Jersey has made the unflattering list of places where judges “systematically apply laws and court procedures in an inequitable manner, generally against defendants in civil lawsuits,” according to the American Tort Reform Association, which compiles the annual ranking. And Alabama has landed on the watch list for the second consecutive year.
Why? The Superior Court of Atlantic County, which is located in the shadow of Atlantic City’s hulking casinos, remains what ATRA calls “a center for mass tort actions, often directed at one of the state’s own economic generators, pharmaceutical manufacturers.” The group calculates 93 percent of plaintiffs in New Jersey’s pharmaceutical mass torts come from outside the state and the court houses ...

By Jim Sanders

Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009
Assembly Democrats this afternoon choseAssemblyman John A. Perez as their new speaker, making the first-term Democrat the first openly gay man to hold the post.
Members emerged from a closed-door caucus at the historic Stanford Mansion to announce that Democrats had chosen Perez, of Los Angeles, on an unanimous vote.
A public vote on the Assembly floor is expected in January.
Perez walked arm-in-arm from the caucus meeting with current Assmbly Speaker Karen Bass and Kevin de Leon, a Los Angeles Democrat who had fought fiercely for the job but ultimately bowed out and formally nominated Perez before today’s voice vote.
Perez said it was an “incredibly moving experience to have the un...

In a powerful new book, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Investigator Jason Corburn, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, examines why most American cities are unable to offer healthy surroundings to all their residents. Toward the Healthy City: People, Places and the Politics of Urban Planning uses success stories, past and present, to identify what city planners, health departments, activists and residents themselves can do to improve the physically and socially toxic environments that are too common in our cities today. Learn more about the book http://www.rwjf.org/humancapital/product.jsp?id=52309 (Source: BHIC)

because i was cannon fodder —
because we needed him
