(Note: This post contains spoilers. If you are like my girl Brittany and you believe happily in the story of Santa, skip down to where it says “Diabetes is like Santa Claus.”)
My husband and I share a philosophy on Santa Claus.
Santa gets too much credit. Why should Santa get all the glory for the gifts that show up underneath the Christmas tree on Christmas morning? Mom and Dad work their tails off to provide a fun and comfortable life for our child, and to have the fun thunder (funder?) stolen by Santa Claus is unfair. “Thank you, Santa, for the Barbie and the Rockers van!” I shouted as a kid, not realizing that Mom and Dad put in some extra hours (and spent half the night assembling the stupid thing) to get that Rocker Van under our Christmas tre...

Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicolas, Kris Kringle, Sinterklaas. Call him what you will, at this time of year, for children who celebrate everywhere, many questions of a scientific nature arise and parents squirm in their efforts to answer them.
Now, Gregory Mone, a contributing editor at Popular Science, tells us to forget all about the fat, jolly bloke dressed in red, the elves, Mrs Claus and an Arctic home. Apparently, Santa is actually from Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and he’s nearly as fat as he used to be. More to the point though, technology has caught up with the old guy and eavesdropping ornament implants, cloning and wormholes are all now at Santa’s disposal on Christmas Eve.
This affectionate book published for the first time today in the UK, billed as hilarious an...

Repeated Practice Not Always Perfect: How to Improve Your Game

It’s sad when something that everyone told you as a child turns out to be a lie. Santa Claus isn’t real; the only person willing to exchange your baby teeth for money is your mom; and practice doesn’t actually make perfect. This explains why we were never able to perfect our jump shot even though we practiced in the driveway for hours on end.
So what are you supposed to do if you’re determined to be the next LeBron? Mix up your practice. Instead of doing 100 lay-ups, engage in variable training and practice a mixture of skills. Do a lay-up, then a jump shot, then dribble for a while. Studies show that variable training produces better results regarding the skill you want to improve. So, practice kind of makes perfect — you just have to make sure ...

If someone tells you they never lie to their kids, they’re lying. Some truth-stretching is essential in order to spare youngsters from life’s harsh realities, or just make parents’ lives a little easier. Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” coined his own term for it: Truthiness – truth that comes from the gut, not books. So, here are four instances when we give you permission to lie straight to your kids’ faces.
Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy Dilemma
We know this one is controversial. Some hardcore parents spill the beans from day one about Santa Claus and the rest of them being big fat phonies. But those families miss a lot – leaving out cookies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer, hunting for eggs on Easter Sund...

I am willing to risk sounding like Scrooge to share my belief that children should be told the truth about Santa and the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. In Yes Annika, There is a Santa Claus, another attachment parenting proponent comes to the conclusion that she will perpetuate the Santa “fantasy” with her daughter. She says:
I’ve heard parents debate this topic, reasons that affect how new parents handle Santa almost always involve the way their parents handled it. It seems that the only angry memories involve parents who did not promote the Santa story. I have yet to hear any adult say, “Yeah, my parents LIED to me. Boy was I pissed when I found out there was no Santa Claus.”
Well, count me as one of the people who felt lied to and was angry about it (it’s okay...

Bah Humbug might be the new motto at Ottawa, Canada’s 150-bed Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The powers-that-be have decided that having Santa visit was too risky considering the H1N1 flu virus that is making the rounds.
Poppycock, rubbish, and every other non-offending word from me. This is not necessary – a visit from Santa has no more of a chance of increasing illness than the video link-ups with Santa that the hospital is planning – with immunosuppressed children being the exception. The administrators said that each child will be receiving a personalized video greeting from the man himself.
It’s understandable that we want to keep our children safe. The spread of a virus like H1N1 is scary because of the severity of effects it can have on some childr...

American Santa’s helpers, who stand-in for Santa in public appearances (because we know that Santa can’t be *everywhere*), are asking for the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine before they face the contaminated masses, say news reports. The coughing and close contact with children are giving Santa’s helpers the shivers.
Seriously though, this is so much a concern that one of the Santa groups, the Amalgamated Order of Read Bearded Santas, addressed the issue, urging its Santas to use plenty of hand sanitizers during their Santa days. Adding vitamins to their diet is also recommended.
According to this USA Today article, Better not cough: Santas lobby for swine flu shots, rather than washing their suits weekly, Santas who spend their time with sick children in particular will be wash...

I don’t think we’ll ever reach a point that we’ve “heard it all,” because every time I think I have, I hear something else.
What do you think about the possibility of your bag of chips, bottle of soda, and plate of store-bought cookies being bulked up with vitamins and minerals? Well in you’re in Canada, this could be coming to a store near you, considering what Health Canada is considering. However, according to articles I’ve been reading, the Health Minister, Leona Aglukkaq, has put the plans on hold pending further review. A smart move, perhaps?
It seems that some people feel that if people are missing the vitamins and minerals found in a balanced diet and they are going to eat junk food anyway, they might as well benefit from junk food that&#82...

Charlie’s never sat on Santa Claus’s lap.
We have tried, when he was much younger and we found ourselves in a mall in New Jersey, the land of malls and mallrats. Or maybe we had gone to the mall that day for that sole purpose. Something about “mall air” and the deliberately smiling velvet-clad elves/Santa’s helpers, and the line of overly excited, bored, or wandering about children, led Jim to say, quite wisely: “Let’s get out of here.”

In case you missed it, on Sunday (December 7, 2008), the final chapter to what was quite possibly the most (in)famous case of an attempted murder using insulin ended. The case, of course, was the attempted murder of Martha "Sunny" von Bulow, which was televised by the international media when it went to trial back in the 1980's. Her husband, Claus von Bulow, went to trial for her attmpted murder using insulin not once, but twice. He was first convicted, which was later overturned, and he was again tried for attempting to murder her using insulin a few years later. On Sunday, Martha "Sunny" von Bulow died in a nursing home on the Upper East Side of New York City. Her death was confirmed by Lucas Dedrick, the director of the Mary Manning Walsh Home where she resided, and Maureen Connelly, a s...

Claus Braestrup announced he is resigning immediately, just one day after the Danish drugmaker reported its best-ever financial performance. Apparently, the 63-year-old Braestrup, who became ceo in 2003, indicated he planned to leave after the financial results were announced, but no one expected him to pack up the very next day.
“It is regrettable that Claus Braestrup has decided to resign from his position sooner than we had expected,” say Per Wold-Olsen, a former Merck exec who chairs the supervisory board, in a statement. “Some time ago, Claus Braestrup disclosed his considerations to retire after Lundbeck had announced its financial results for 2007.
