I’m not sure we’re ever fully immune to it-that pout, that stomp, that automatic childlike reaction to things not going our way. “It’s not fair,” seems to never want to grow up. As we get older, however, the disappointments get bigger.
It’s not the game we lost, but the games we can’t even play that upsets us.

Therapists, psychologists and even psychiatrists are dotting the online landscape with websites, blogs and even with their activity on social networking sites! Has a new norm in our field been established?
It’s been almost two years since the first post in my Psych Central series on the paradigm shift occurring for therapists in how we present ourselves on the web. In October 2009, in Psychotherapists Unmasked on the Internet, I used an exchange between my psychiatrist father (of 45 years) and myself, a new Marriage and Family Therapist, to demonstrate the clash of eras and belief systems occurring. He had given me a hard time about putting my picture up on my website several years back but in the end asked me to help him figure out how to get a website up for himself (sheepish gri...

May is Mental Health Month (if you hadn’t heard), and in keeping with that theme, it’s good to check in to see where mental health resides in various places in society.
One of those places is in our schools. Schools can be a helpful frontline in the identification — through screening programs — of at-risk children and teens who may get a mental disorder. In the past decade, schools have also become a necessary component of ensuring students who need mental health treatment have access to something that can help.
But University of Missouri researchers caution that when it comes to mental health programs in schools, one size does not fit all. Just trying to implement research-based solutions without truly understanding what the problem is in a particular school or sch...

Many clinicians still find it hard to disentangle grief and depression, inspiring countless debates over ...

Good news — you can make a difference!
According to a presentation at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association last week, the 8,600 comments submitted in response to the draft of the new version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (called the “DSM-5″ for short — the 5 stands for the 5th edition of the book) helped spur changes in the draft.

I just finished a 40-day winter break from graduate school. After a quick but intense first semester, I was a bit crispy around the edges and welcomed the vacation. But now it is back to school and the next chapter in my journey towards becoming a clinical therapist.

With the recent announcement (PDF) by the American Psychiatric Association of a one year delay for the latest revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM, as it’s known), a new round of commentary and articles have appeared questioning the usefulness of the DSM.
The DSM is used by clinicians in the mental health field to diagnose mental disorders according to the symptom lists contained in the book. The DSM is also used by researchers to ensure that when one researcher is talking about treatments for “major depression,” another researcher will use the same definition for “major depression.”
I’m no defender of the DSM revision process, as previous blog entries have noted. But I’ve noticed that sometimes the criti...

Carl Jung is a fascinating character in psychology’s history.
Mentored by Freud himself, Jung broke off from Freud to found his own theory of human behavior, nowadays generally referred to as Jungian psychology. The Jungian theories place more emphasis on the spiritual side of our inner psyche, and the belief that all of humanity shares what he referred to as a collective unconscious. He also believed in the power of archetypes — that our myths and symbols are universal and innate and serve a greater purpose in helping us learn from each of our stages in life.
Carl Jung died 48 years ago, but he still has a devout following of professionals, clinicians and researchers who believe in the power of his theories. While not a popular form of psychotherapy in the United States, it r...

Today I have the honor of interviewing Ryan Howes, a clinical psychologist and college professor who blogs. Howes earned his masters degree in theology and PhD in clinical psychology from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he studied spirituality, men’s issues and psychodynamic therapy. He teaches graduate students at Pepperdine University and Fuller and is co-author of “What Wives Wish their Husbands Knew About Sex: A Guide for Christian Men” (Baker Books, 2007), which has been called the funniest, most irreverent Christian sex manual since . . . well, a long time anyway. He maintains a private practice in Pasadena, California.
Last year he created the blog In Therapy: A User’s Guide to Psychotherapy where he addresses problems often experienced but rarely written ...

What is the difference between having a short-term, emotional crisis, an adjustment disorder, and long-term clinical depression? Well, in the hands of a sloppy mental health professional, the answer might be “nothing” — all three might be diagnosed as “major depression.” But is this really sloppy diagnosis (or, as researchers would call it, a “diagnostic challenge”), or a simple result of how mental health is typically reimbursed in the U.S.?
Researchers Monroe & Reid (2009) argue that clinicians and researchers need to do a better job in evaluating depression in context of a person’s life stress. Without doing so, they argue “one cannot determine whether or not the presenting condition represents an understandable response to adve...

There’s usually a canyon-sized gap between what researchers find in their studies and what goes on in clinical practice, otherwise known as “the real world.”
One of those differences is the simple act of measurement. Most clinicians simply don’t spend a lot of time measuring or worrying about measuring their client’s progress. If this is a problem in the mental health professions, it’s virtually a non-existent exercise in primary care practices. You know, those places where most people actually get their antidepressants.
Why should anyone care about measuring what a person is feeling or experiencing? Well, research has shown that such measurements help a professional keep better track of their patient’s concerns, and whether the current medication...

As you have probably seen, the Cognitive Health and Brain Fitness field is rapidly evolving, so let me highlight some of the main recent developments affecting the field:
1) Public policy initiatives:
- The Government of Ontario, Canada, announced a $10m investment in Baycrest Research Center to help develop and commercialize brain fitness technologies. This $10m investment was matched with an additional $10m by local investors.
- In the US, The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 was signed into law, included in the recently-approved economic bailout bill. The passage of this law has significant implications for healthcare providers and technology vendors alike.

URL: http://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp?language=englishHello all, and welcome to my first posting here at PsychSplash! I hope to continue on the road that Dr. Gareth paved so well. My first inclusion in to the land of PsychSplash involves Human Research Subjects Training. As a Ph.D. Student who is almost finished with his proposal, I am working on the IRB as well, and this can be a daunting task sometimes to keep the principles of the human research participant combined with my own wanting to get the proposal done. To that end, I have found in my research the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, which helps keeps participants up-to-date on IRB and research training.

Now this is a really neat find and a wonderful example of people taking a standard aspect of academic practice (the conference) and adding increased functionality and community. Confabb, put simply, combines a database of conferences, conventions and trade shows with social networking tools. The result is a conference site that has the capacity to truly expand the experience of people attending conferences all around the world. Jon Mandell from Confabb was kind enough to outline some of the key features (and upcoming features) for me in a couple of emails. I will do my best to summarize the highlights.
History and goals of the site
Confabb is the brainchild of Cameron Barrett (www.CamWorld.com) who came up with the idea about two years ago. The idea did not take shape however until brought...

Most research into psychotherapy requires use of a specific “program” or manual of instructions or exercises that most therapists, in the real world, have trouble sticking to.
OK, I hope the headline caught your attention. If you are a clinician, keep reading. If you are not a doctor, nurse or other healthcare provider it's OK to read this too. In fact, you probably should.
A regular theme on HealthBlog has been the growing use of contemporary, lower-priced, very powerful, knowledge worker solutions in healthcare settings around the world. I've written about hospitals and clinics in countries like Spain, Portugal, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and elsewhere that are using development tools, technologies and solutions from Microsoft (and our partners) to meet their need for scalable, intuitive, mobile, modern IT solutions in clinical settings. These are clinical settings and clinicians that now enjoy improved care...

Scare Tactics to Prevent Psychological Tests on eBay

Our friends over at The National Psychologist alerted us to a change in eBay’s policy about selling “protected” psychological tests — they now allow the sale (and resale) of such tests, whereas before this policy change they did not.
Their reasoning? Test publishers have not shown any basis, other than pure speculation, that making such tests available for sale could cause the public harm.
Many psychological tests are “protected” or “secured,” meaning they are originally sold only to certain qualified professionals (e.g., licensed professionals or researchers), with proof of their qualification. This is done to protect the integrity of the test. The more people know about a specific test (say, one of the IQ tests commonly used, or the MMPI...

Hypertension Often Missed In Children

Do you want to hear something scary? On average, doctors spot only 1 in 4 children that have high blood pressure. I would say that is a reason for concern. And when you do the math, that would mean that there are over 1.5 million kids that are “living” with undiagnosed hypertension.
What is the reason behind this very, very frightening little statistic…
One of the biggest reasons that hypertension is missed in children is that normal blood pressure values change based on a child’s age, gender and height. So, while 120/80 mm/Hg is a normal reading for an adult and for some older children, that same reading could indicate high blood pressure in a younger, shorter child.
So my suggestion is to be that pushy parent. Yes, take it from a nurse mommy of 3 that has had her...
