It starts at a young age. Schools encourage it. Our families help define it. We begin our lives with the labels they give us like big brother, baby sister, only child. And as we get older, they just get more serious.
Sometimes the way we’re perceived such as the “good one,” the “bad one,” the “troubled one,” the “drama queen,” inevitably follow us throughout the rest of our life. Sometimes these seemingly harmless labels take on a life of their own. If we don’t achieve our own sense of self, they begin to define who we are. And we grasp on tight.
These lyrics from the Barenaked Ladies song What a Good Boy reminds me of the pressures they can have on us:

“When I was born they looked at me and said
What a good boy, what a sma...

One model that is helpful in identifying child behaviors in alcoholic families is that of Sharon Wegscheider (1981). In this model children adopt various coping and enabling roles.
Little caretaker
The little caretaker role is often a carbon copy of the partner of the alcoholic. They take care of the alcoholic; getting drinks, cleaning up after the alcoholic and soothing over stressful situations and events. They are validated by approval for taking responsibility for the alcoholic and their Behaviour. This little person often goes on to become a partner of an alcoholic or other dysfunctional person if they do not get treatment.
Family hero
The family hero role brings pride to the family by being successful at school or work. At home, the hero assumes the responsibilities that the enabli...

Has the Insane Clown Posse gone insane?

I’ve heard some buzz about some weird new video that the Insane Clown Posse came out with, but after watching this strange parody on SNL I had to check out the original. So first the parody:

You can see the original video here. It’s actually pretty strange in and of itself. Here’s a more typical video from the group. Their stuff normally reminds me of the movie Gummo. I assume they’re mellowing since they’re pushing beyond their mid-30s and both have replicated (”Shaggy 2 Dope” up to replacement).
Note: The videos are NSFW if you have the volume on. But really, if you’re at work you should have headphones on. (Source: Gene Expression)

Poll of the Day: Should McDonald's Retire Ronald?

A new group of consumer activists has banded together against one of America’s most famous clowns: Ronald McDonald. The ubiquitous fast food mascot, or “Chief Happiness Consultant”, has been around since 1963, marketing happy meals, milkshakes, and chicken nuggets to kids. But RetireRonald.org thinks that, far from spreading happiness, he’s causing widespread child obesity, and they want him to retire.
Retire Ronald, started by Stacey Folsom, national spokesperson for Corporate Accountability International, wants McDonald’s to quit using the clown to market harmful products to kids, and is trying to gain public support of the cause. They conducted their own U.S. poll in March, asking whether Americans thought it was time for Ronald to go. Their poll showed tha...

I'm not quite sure how I came to this idea on Christmas day, other than perhaps this commonplace, common-sense observation. It's the part of faith to give us a better understanding of God.It's the part of religion to make it easier to do that, when things like community and knowledge help with that understanding, and putting that understanding into practice. And as a community of faith, it must needs be as inclusive as possible. It's the part of politics to give us a better understanding of the principles of governance. It's the part of government to make it easier to put those principles into practice, for the good of all, even for the benefit of those who passionately disagree. At the top of each parallel stack are individuals with a vocation, a calling to a particular discipline, and the s...

If Canter and Segal were Republican consultants ... well, they were almost certainly Republicans.GOP.am is brought to you from the dim and shameless corner of the Republican tent, the one where all the grafters and fast buck artists congregate to discuss the profit-making opportunities of various Multi-Level Marketing schemes and the various "can't fail" make money fast schemes they are marketing for a new, low, low price. The problem is that if you spend most of your day pandering to the magical thinking and bases instincts of the lowest-information consumption units, you might find yourself slipping into the unintentional hilarity zone.I can almost visualize the thought process - if I may cheapen the term for the sake of irony. Conservative Bible ProjectFrom ConservapediaJump to: navigation, searchLiberal bias has become the single biggest distortion in modern Bible translations. There are three sources of errors in conveying biblical meaning: lack of precision in the original language, such as terms underdeveloped to convey new concepts of Christianity lack of precision in modern language translation bias in converting the original language to the modern one. Of these three sources of errors, the last introduces the largest error, and the biggest component of that error is liberal bias.
