Pharma Should Not Abandon Facebook: Bard Explains

Earlier this month, a new entity emerged to explore – and maybe solve – some of the social media quandaries that vex the pharmaceutical industry. Launched by Mark Bard, who previously headed Manhattan Research, a market research firm, the new Digital Health Coalition plans to look at the different ways various technologies can be used to enhance health care and how pharma, among others, can adapt. The advisory board includes people from Google, various drugmakers and advertising agencies. We spoke with Bard about his reasons for creating the coalition - which is organized as a non-profit, by the way – and what he hopes to accomplish…
Pharmalot: Why form this coalition?
Bard: I spent the better part of the past decade at Manhattan Research looking at technology and innovations and h...

Too Drunk to Drive? Your Car Will Tell You If So

Drunk driving continues to be a serious problem. In 2009 for example, alcohol was a factor in more than 10,000 highway deaths. The same year, a stunning 10 percent of respondents to a survey of U.S. adults said they had operated an automobile while drunk during the previous year. Nearly 6 percent said they had done it more than once.
So how would you feel about a car that can instantly detect whether a driver is drunk and prevent that person from starting the car? You better make up your mind quickly, because scientists are close to perfecting this technology.
“We’re five to seven years away from being able to integrate this into cars,” Robert Strassburger, the VP for safety at the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM) told the Washington Post. The AAM, an automotive trade...

We’ve seen it before. A couple of years ago, I wrote about Roswell Park’s Prostate Club for Men offering “Prizes For Prostates” — Buffalo Sabres hockey tickets or Buffalo Bills football tickets among other awards for men who showed proof that they talked to their doctor about prostate cancer.
Now a bunch of Georgia radiotherapy centers and the Morehouse School of Medicine are among those promoting the “Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition” and luring men in for PSA blood tests by offering them Atlanta Hawks basketball tickets.
They also promote this misleading statistic: “One in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.” No explanation is given of what lifetime risk means. And no explanation is given of how many of th...

By Neal McCluskeyWith the release of a new report analyzing a quietly amended Government Accountability Office study that’s been used to club for-profit colleges, fear of GAO bias has reached a fever pitch. Sadly, the GAO’s response to the report does anything but assuage that fear.
To get a decent sense for the government abuse both surrounding, and possibly perpetrated by, the GAO study in question, it’s worth a quick rehash of events.
Basically, the study was requested by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee who has been waging war against for-profit colleges on the suspicion that the sector is rife with fraud, waste, and abuse. To get data to support his suspicion, Harkin asked the GAO to con...

By David BoazOn his “700 Club” program this week, Christian Coalition founder Pat Robertson endorsed the decriminalization of marijuana. He says, “We’ve got to take a look at what we’re considering crimes. I’m not exactly for the use of drugs, don’t get me wrong, but I just believe that criminalizing marijuana, criminalizing the possession of a few ounces of pot, that kinda thing it’s just, it’s costing us a fortune and it’s ruining young people. Young people go into prisons, they go in as youths and come out as hardened criminals. That’s not a good thing.” Check out the video:

Robertson’s comments come a few days after other conservatives, including Ed Meese and Gov. Rick Perry, have joined to encourage new conservative thinking about who should...

We all know that the debate about vaccines is contentious. In general, mixing science and emotion is a dangerous laboratory experiment. However, the controversy took an interesting turn the other day when AMC Entertainment, which runs the AMC movie theater chain, did a last-minute about-face and chose not to run a 30-second ad from a non-profit that warns against the use of mercury in flu vaccines.
Here’s the short of it: The Coalition for Safe Minds, which says it is not an anti-vaccine group, produced what it calls a public service announcement (see above) that tells viewers mercury is a dangerous toxin and the public should demand mercury-free flu shots. “The PSA alerts parents and pregnant women of the presence of mercury in most influenza vaccines and the ample availabilit...

In a rare bit of good news about the ongoing AIDS crisis, the results of a clinical trial were unveiled yesterday and found that gay men taking a pill made by Gilead Sciences called Truvada – which combines two antiretroviral drugs and is currently used to treat the virus – lowered the risk of contraction by 44 percent and reduced new infections by as much as 73 percent in the men who most often took the pill (results here). The findings, which were published in The New England Journal of Medicine (see here), were described as “huge” by Anthony Fauci, who heads the infectious disease division at the National Institutes of Health (see more here). We spoke with Mitchell Warren, the executive director of the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, about why this may be a game changer, the ca...

I have been struggling with mixed emotions. The National Breast Cancer Coalition came out last month with a new initiative — to cure breast cancer by January 1, 2020. As exciting as it may seem to set a deadline for a cure, I am so terribly disappointed to think it may take another 10 years. That means that over two million more women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and a number of them will die from the disease. This to me is unacceptable.
Millions and millions of dollars have been raised toward breast cancer awareness, treatment, and research just since I was diagnosed seven years ago. There has been real progress in finding better treatments and making inroads in new directions such as genetic testing. Yet, if we are prepared to wait 10 more years for a cure we can’t honestly ...

Last week, the FDA held its first open meeting about user fees for generic drug makers, an issue that has been around nearly 20 years. The session came as generics continue to grow in popularity – nearly 75 percent of prescription drug volume was generic last year – and the FDA grapples with an inability to approve drugs fast enough. However, the backlog appears to be less of a priority to the agency than having funds to conduct overseas plant inspections. Meanwhile, the generic industry is split – the usual trade group was there along with a new coalition representing a few big players, but Mylan Laboratories spoke for itself. And so we spoke with Ramsey Baghdadi of Provision Policy, a healthcare analysis firm that provides insights to Concept Capital and The RPM Report, about his i...

An effort in Massachusetts to repeal a controversial law that prohibits drugmakers from giving gifts and meals to doctors and other healthcare professional has apparently ended. The provision, which had been contained in a proposed economic development bill, was removed during a legislative conference late Friday, according to two consumer groups that fought against repeal.
The maneuver would appear to end a contentious battle over a law that upset doctors, and pitted various consumer and patient groups against restauranteurs and the pharmaceutical industry. The law, which you can read here and here, was passed two years ago and was seen as a way to limit undue industry influence over medical practice, but industry supporters argued the measure is hostile toward drugmakers (background here...

Researchers have announced results of a trail that showed that the use of a vaginal gel containing the anti-AIDS medication tenofovir has cut transmission by thirty-nine percent. Mitchell Warren of the New York-based AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition has termed the findings “thrilling.” (Source: Inside Surgery)

By Malou InnocentToday’s Washington Post reports that residents of Gizab, a village in southern Afghanistan, reclaimed their territory from the Taliban. One U.S. commander called it “perhaps the most important thing that has happened in southern Afghanistan this year.”
Gizab may eventually turn back to Taliban control, but at least for now, we can try and postulate as to why local residents successfully defended their territory, achieving what the coalition has been trying to do for years throughout the country but to no avail. Here’s a thought: allow Afghans to fight the Taliban themselves and slowly back away. Unfortunately, this story may reinforce the atrocious ”One Tribe at a Time” formulation, a strategy that entails coalition troops “...

Developing drugs for treating, let alone curing Alzheimer’s is one of the more difficult prospects facing researchers (see here). So a new consortium called the Coalition Against Major Diseases announced plans to create databases to share research on neurodegenerative diseases. The effort, which will be managed by the non-profit Critical Path Institute, includes research foundations, patient groups and several drugmakers. The databases will be openly shared by drugmakers and other researchers in hopes of setting a voluntary industry data standard. For starters, CAMD will have data from 4,000 Alzheimer’s patients who participated in 11 failed industry studies. We spoke briefly with Marc Cantillon, the CAMD director, about the project…

We all know the sites you can visit to find out how many sex offenders live or work near you. It’s seen as a measure of public safety to keep the community informed of their whereabouts. It also may be another form of punishment for the offender; a reminder that they’ve lost all privacy. In England and Wales, there’s a movement to keep the identities of rapists anonymous.
The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition thinks the fact that the victim is unnamed, but the accused is identified, creates a double standard. Great Britain tried not naming accused sex offenders once before for 12 years, but the policy was eventually repealed because it was impeding police investigations; authorities wanted other victims who had been attacked by the accused to come ...

The widely publicized theft of pharmaceuticals from a Lilly distribution center in Connecticut may have generated guffaws or astonishment, but the Sopranos-like heist actually underscores a growing trend. Last year, there were 46 such thefts valued at $184 million, up from 35 worth $41 million in 2007, according to FreightWatch International. And there have been 10 this year worth roughly $110 million.
Pharmaceuticals only comprise 5 percent of thefts by volume and the average theft was valued at $4 million in 2009, surpassing all other commodity groups, although the figure is skewed by a $37 million theft that took place in Pennsylvania. Otherwise, the average would have been $2.5 million. In general, most thefts occur at truck stops or secured terminals or distribution centers, although ...

The Academy Award-winning director of ‘Rain Man’ and many other flicks just signed on to direct the controversial movie about obesity, which GlaxoSmithKline agreed to underwrite. The drugmaker continues to insist the effort is a philanthropic initiative - its share of revenues will be given to charity - and is designed to raise awareness (background).
But yes, Glaxo does acknowledge selling the Alli diet pill, although the drugmaker continues to maintain that the Creative Coalition, a non-profit political and social advocacy group with backing from such stars as Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon, will have creative control. You can read a chat with a Glaxo exec in The Wrap. (Source: Pharmalot)

An unusual joint hearing of two committees in the Minnesota legislature - the Commerce and Labor and the Business, Industry and Jobs committees - will take place today to debate three bills designed to improve doctors’ prescribing skills, reduce the influence of pharmaceutical companies and perhaps reduce overall drug spending by consumers.
The undertaking pits a recently formed advocacy group, the Minnesota Prescription Coalition, which favors evidence-based prescribing, fewer conflicts of interest issues in medical field, and reduced spending on prescription drugs, against an array of drugmakers and doctors, including some from the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators, who claim their relationship with industry results in better patient care.

about medical marijuana
September 23rd, 2009
Los Angeles City Councilmember Dennis Zine told a standing room only crowd at Tuesday’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee hearing that an ordinance that does not recognize sales of medical cannabis would not work for Los Angeles, but he is worried about creating a policy that violates state law. The Councilmember’s ambivalence is part of the confusion that dominated yesterday’s marathon committee meeting. The PLUM committee voted to continue the debate on the regulations, Zine’s motion for more study into relevant case law, and a progress report from the planning department for another week to allow committee members more time to review the material.

Part of what the committee is reviewing is a ...

I would hope that Congress and the American people hold McChrystal to his “12 month” prediction, because if President Obama sticks to McChrystal’s ambitious strategy, U.S. forces could remain in Central Asia for decades.
McChrystal argues that the U.S. military must devote more effort to interacting with the local population and elevating the importance of governance. How?
chers—
this is a special report on last wednesday’s raids of 14 medical cannabis clinics and 6 residences in the san diego area. raids were conducted by a team of federal & county & city law enforcement officials (no representation from the state of california, according to the district attorney’s press release). District attorney Bonnie Dumanis held a news conference the next day, thursday, attempting to justify not only the SWAT-style tactics but also the political timing of the raids, which took place the day after the san diego city council voted 6-1 to create dispensary regulations by early next year.

The district attorney is defending this week’s raid on medical dispensaries throughout the county, saying they were simply drug dealers out to make a fast buck.

Authorities say 31 people were arrested in a sting that targeted medical marijuana distributors in San Diego County.
District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said Thursday that she supports marijuana use for medical purposes - as allowed under California law - but that the distributors may have been operating stores to sell drugs illegally.
No charges have been filed. Prosecutors say possible charges include sale and possession of marijuana and firearms offenses....

Hi, my name is Patti Walker and I am both a medical marijuana recommended patient as well as a former San Diego collective employee.
I was involved in the raids yesterday and my collective was hit pretty bad. I worked at Beneficial Care Collective in downtown San Diego at about 1:30 pm I walked into the office and heard pounding and saw police task force every where. I had no idea what was going on and then an officer pointed a shotgun at my face and told me to sit down, and there I sat.

Myself and everyone else who worked there was then handcuffed and put in a room, they told me it was just procedure and I wasn’t in any trouble just caught up in something really. About 30 min later they told me and the other employees were being arrested and charged with felony sale of marijuana.

Hello,
My name is Sebastian Maselli, I am a legal medical marijuana patient in California, as well as a founding member of The Healing Dragon collective. I am also an Iraq war veteran that has honorably and voluntarily served our country in the United States Marine Corps for over seven years. I know the meaning of sacrifice. I understand struggles. Most importantly I have witnessed first-hand how the war on terrorism has affected our military members. I have seen what happens to my brothers and sisters in the military medical system, Marines, sailors, and soldiers get pumped full of prescription medications. One med is for this, the other is for that, and the other seven meds help to counteract the side-effects of the first few drugs. This is not to say that they are not getting the care t...

One of the obstacles to reducing mortgage foreclosures is that so many of the homes being foreclosured upon are not occupied by their owners. Approximately 20 percent of homes are vacant investor-held properties, while according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition another 20 percent are occupied by renters.
Addressing the issue of renter occupied foreclosures has been one of the harder nuts to crack. We should have no sympathy for vacant homes purchased purely for speculative gain – the best course of action for those homes is foreclosure, or even better, speculators should be expected to continue paying those mortgages even in the face of losses. Where homes are currently rented however, it may be in the interest of both the bank and the renter to continue that...

Virtually no one believes that things are going well on the ground in Afghanistan. The reasons are many. Some of the practical frustrations are captured by my friend Joshua Foust, who is working with the military on attempting to better understand Afghan society. He writes:
Over scalding cups of tea in mid-February, an elder in Nijrab, Afghanistan said to me, “For two years you have come here and asked me the same questions. I like you, I like the French, but you people never learn.”
He was referring to the generic questions Westerners ask Afghans: What is your life like? Where is the Taliban? What are your village’s needs? This particular elder has regular contact with American troops, and likes Americans enough to have tea with us. Nevertheless, he was deeply fr...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he will not sign a package of bills Democrats sent him today to increase taxes and make program cuts, an $18 billion effort passed without Republican votes.
The governor said the package did not include provisions to stimulate the economy by loosening environmental standards, making more use of contractors on public projects and give him flexibility to furlough state workers without union intervention.
Republicans claimed the Democratic package was illegal because it raised $9.3 billion in taxes without a two-thirds vote. But Schwarzenegger did not criticize that approach.

The state Senate and Assembly made their way through the package of bills requi...

20-30 CES tenants and advocates weighed in at city hall when i was there wednesday. an interesting statistic (if i heard right — it’s astonishing) is that 75 percent of the rental housing in LA falls into this “mom & pop” category. 4 units or less, owners live on site and own no other property.
“good faith” evictions are when a landlord kicks a tenant out to move a family member into the unit vacated (an eviction is pretty much an eviction, no matter the faith). the big issue involved was the amount of the relocation fees landlords should be paying evicted tenants in that situation.
will start tracking of this movement at aids-write. i believe our causes are naturally allied.

Nevada’s budget problems are well known and the mismanagement of the nations’ worst Governor is a sad reality.

Hello All,
I felt it was important for me to pass on this information out of the Governor’s office.
Apparently the Governor’s office has decided that the recommendations put forth in the Nevada Autism Task Force Report, “will cost the state too much money”, and therefore will not be acted upon. The Task Force has been dissolved, and no re-appointments will be made. A highly placed source at the Governors office said, “that decision came from the very top.”

Under sustained pressure from AIDS activitists, the drugmaker has frozen the price charged to state-run ADAP programs for Isentress, a novel HIV med that was recently introduced. In a letter to the Fair Pricing Coalition, Merck writes that the launch price will now remain the same through the end of 2010, the POZ blog reports.
The moves comes after the activist group last fall initiated an Internet protest asking the drugmaker to “set a price that offers a reasonable profit without worsening the economic problems faced by patients and payers.” The activist group has been concerned that Isentress pricing - $27 a day wholesale, or about $9,900 a year - would have hurt state-run AIDS Drug Assistance Programs.

A group of drugmakers are lobbying Governor Charlie Crist to veto a proposed study to compare the effectiveness of generics with brand-name meds, The Jacksonville Business Journal reports. The Coalition for Affordable Prescriptions says the study will be “intentionally written to deliver a biased conclusion that will keep FDA-approved, safe, effective and affordable generic prescriptions from Florida consumers.”
The proposed study was added in provisional language to the General Appropriations Act by state rep Ellyn Bogdanoff, a Republican from Fort Lauderdale, requiring the Florida Department of Health to commission a study of the Florida Pharmacy Practice Act, which outlines rules for pharmacies. So far, Crist has not acted on the measure.

The behind-the-scenes machinations that will determine the blueprint for allowing generic biologics - or biosimilars, as many call them - is threatening to emerge as a consumer healthcare issue. Or that’s what is hoped by a group of generic drugmakers, insurers, pharmacy chains and major employers.
With lobbying heating up in Washington, the Coalition for a Competitive Pharmaceutical Market has aligned itself with several consumers groups to begin a newspaper campaign that portrays brand-name drugmakers and biotechs as flying into Washington DC to unfairly line their pockets at the expense of patients. A letter was also sent today to the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
The biosimilar issue is, of course, complicated, but a key sticking point is the extent to which brand-name com...

Stung by a crackdown on unproven claims about the safety and effectiveness of medications made by compounding pharmacies to treat menopause, supporters of the drugs have launched a lobbying campaign aimed at the FDA, The Washington Post writes.
Last week, the HOME (Hands Off My Estrogens!) Coalition, a group based in Edinburg, Va., placed a full-page ad in five newspapers, including USA Today and the Wall Street Journal, accusing the agency of being hostile to “natural” hormonal medicines made according to a doctor’s prescription by a compounding pharmacy.
The ads urge women and their physicians to e-mail the White House and members of Congress asking them to protect patient access to meds they claim are “bio-identical” to those found in the body, the Post r...

The Fair Pricing Coalition, an independent community group that works to contain the prices of drugs used to treat HIV, is condemning price increases announced this week by Bristol-Myers Squibb, which failed to meet with the umbrella group, as most other drugmakers do, to discuss pricing.
The increases, which ranged from 6.9 percent to 9 percent for all of Bristol’s HIV products “are well beyond any increases in the Consumer Price Index and above the increases taken by any other company”, says Martin Delaney of the FPC, in a statement. “These drugs have been on the market for several years and their development costs have long been recovered. There is no justification for this kind of increase.”

A coalition of AIDS groups worried about the cost of Isentress, a novel HIV med that’s expected to be approved by the FDA this month, is orchestrating an Internet protest asking the drugmaker to “set a price that offers a reasonable profit without worsening the economic problems faced by patients and payers.”
The Fair Pricing Coalition, which held meetings with Merck, is circulating a statement noting that “the pricing of this treatment will have a major impact on the various publicly funded programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, all of which are already straining at the breaking point.” While the group praises Merck’s historical track record in pricing AIDS meds, it also invokes the famous line uttered by George Merck: &...

As the FDA Reform bill, which nows goes to President Bush for signing, is studied and debated, it may be easy to forget that just a few months ago there was a push to include tough restrictions on DTC advertising in the legislation. But that didn’t happen. The reason - intense lobbying by advertising agencies and broadcasters, as well as drugmakers, of course.
The toughest restrictions in early drafts of the bill gave the FDA authority to block a drugmaker from advertising a med that carried serious safety concerns, writes The Wall Street Journal (subscription required). That was omitted. Instead, the FDA will get new power to require drugmakers to submit TV ads for review before they run, but can only recommend changes, not require them. The bill lets the agency levy fines for false...

The growing frustration with the agency over the issue of approving experimental meds, particularly for cancer, is prompting the kind of activism last seen two decades ago among AIDS patients. Even a few companies, such as Pharmacyclics, are openly resisting FDA decisions. The Abigail Alliance patient group plans to appeal a court ruling that experimental meds shouldn’t be given to the terminally ill. And controversy continues over the FDA flip-flop on approving the Provenge prostate-cancer vaccine.
So several of the more vocal patient groups are joining together tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST to protest outside FDA offices in Rockville, Md. The event is being organized by A Right To Live, which has been active in criticizing the FDA’s handling of Provenge; the Abigail Alliance for Better Acc...

September 8, 2007
SAN DIEGO — After years of negotiations, the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego announced Friday a $198.1-million settlement with 144 sexual abuse victims — an amount second only to the $764 million that the Los Angeles Archdiocese has paid out since the scandal gripped the church nationwide in 2002.
The settlement is more than twice what the San Diego diocese had offered before filing for bankruptcy protection in February and slightly tops the average of $1.3 million per victim in the Los Angeles case.

A House committee approved patent reform legislation that technology companies sought for years as a way to reduce costly patent-infringement lawsuits. Pharma, however, opposes the bill, which will now be sent to the full House. And the Senate Judiciary Committee, which began considering its own version last week, is scheduled to continue its own debate tomorrow.
The House legislation aims to improve patent quality by setting up a process to re-evaluate patents after being granted. Supporters argue such post-grant reviews would help weed out bad patents by allowing companies to challenge them without having to go through litigation, which can result in large financial penalties and stifle innovation, the Associated Press reports.

Even though I am five years out from my cancer diagnosis, this is a place I love to go to for support and also to help other young women who are newly diagnosed.
I hope that I can be helpful in some way, maybe by answering questions or just telling the girls that I did have a positive lymph node and I'm still here with no recurrence at this time. I know that when I was first diagnosed, one of the important things to me was finding someone with the same diagnosis that was years out from chemotherapy and doing fine.
There was a poll that was done by one of the board members. I found it to be interesting. The question put out to the women on the...
