Wine, Hope and Autism

What most people who have a mental or developmental disorder want is something that’s hard to dole out — hope. We just want to know that it’s going to be okay, someday, and that we have a chance of finding “normal.”
That’s why it touched my heart to read about a bunch of winemakers in Japan (not typically known for its wine). But these winemakers were different — the staff is made up of more than 100 developmentally disabled and autistic individuals. Not only do they work at the winery, they live there too, and there’s a school there as well.
This comprehensive, 360 degree approach is hope-giving. It provides people who society otherwise does not give a chance a place to feel special and like they belong. And belong they do:

I found myself rearranging my stuff in the room at 7 o’clock in the morning today. And that is NOT normal. On days like this that I don’t have work, I snooze until it’s 10 a.m. and plug myself into cyberspace until sleep comes again.
But today is not a normal day anyway.
I woke up when my dad was briskly shaking me at around 6:30 a.m. I groaned in protest and turned my back on him. But I managed to open an eye at him when he said that he couldn’t find Coco, my hamster.
I wasn’t troubled at first, since my Mom almost always tells me that, only to find Coco buried in his pine shavings, with his ear barely showing through all the covering. And it’s so cute seeing him poke his head through the pine shavings and look at who’s disturbing his sleep.

But ...

Yup, I know I’ve blogged about this before. But even before hammie stayed for 2 days in there, I’ve moved his hammie blog somewhere else. Hehe.

Getting Hammiesessive: Tales From The Hamster Newbie

It was only recently that I have begun taking care of hamsters as pets. I used to have guinea pigs but that was ages ago. I think I have already forgotten how it was to take care of these fancy rodents (hamsters and guinea pigs share the same Order, Rodentia, but of different suborders, the hamsters being in Myomorpha while the guinea pigs are in Hystricomorpha). But I rather miss the touch of their soft fur and their little squeaks so I’ve decided to start having these as pets again. This time, it’s hamsters.

That’s the current home of my two teddy bear hammies, Coco and Qingzi (more photos of them later). I actually started with just one cage, housing Coco and the late Pao Chi (who died for reasons that I still don’t know up to now, and probably will never know...

Alese has sadly lost her fight with Hodgkins disease

Filed under: Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Young Adult Cancers, BlogsI did a post about Alese back in March titled Survival Spotlight: Alese Coco is fighting 2 win. I read on her website today that she passed away on Monday May 7, 2007.
This is what I read on her website.
It is with shattered hearts we announce that Alese died Monday May 7th at 1:20 p.m.Mentally and emotionally, Alese's attitude to the end remained Fight 2 Win. However, her body could no longer carry on the fight and she succumbed due to respiratory complications. She will be greatly missed and there is a collective ache and void left in the hearts of the many people who loved her and were encouraged by her.
What a beautiful young girl she will be forever.
