I finally finished the color wheel wall hanging quilt! As you may recall, it is from a 1993 color wheel kit designed by Susan McKelvy (author of Color for Quilters). I began the quilt earlier this summer and finished it a few weeks ago. It is machine and hand pieced. It is machine quilted. It is 29 in square in size. Here is a closer photo to show the quilting better. Here you can see the quilting of the border. The back is a black cotton. I tried to get a good photo of the quilting from the back, but it didn’t work out.
Ask me about a trip I took with my dad to Maui ten years ago and I can barely recall what we did. But ask me about my childhood toys and suddenly I remember every detail, every curve of a ball, color, texture and even the faint smell of a favorite toy.
There is one toy I remember in particular.
It was a half red, half blue sphere covered with different shaped holes and yellow plastic shapes (triangles, stars, circles, etc.) meant to fit through them. If you’re curious, this is what it looked like.
What I remember is being very young and feeling frustrated because no matter how hard I pushed I could never get all of those puzzle pieces into the holes. It was only when I got older that I realized every piece had its place. I was wasting my energy trying to force pieces where they didn&...

This week, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and other organizations have been observing the second annual Latina Week of Action for Reproductive Justice:
This year’s theme is Caminamos: Justice for Immigrant Women. We’re inviting everyone to join us in moving toward a brighter future for immigrant women and their families. Mean-spirited enforcement, workplace exploitation, and the criminalization of basic rights like education and health care are just a few of the challenges that have forced immigrant women into the shadows and ignored the crucial, positive role we play in our communities.
Action items for the week include calling for a review of the 287(g) program and online discussion on the theme, “what’s the real problem behind the targeting of ...

I bought a kit to make a color wheel years ago (1993), but never made it as I knew for me the tight points would be an issue. I decided it was time to tackle it. I did better with the points than I would have then, but still am not perfectly happy. The problem is the seams are wider than the points which makes it difficult and then there is the problem of pressing said seams. Anyway, here it is. I have finished piecing it (machine and hand), but have not decided how I want to quilt it. With some of the left-over fabric, I planned and pieced this which I call my Ohio Star color wheel. Color wheels are used to help learn color theory. My color wheel kit was designed by Susan McKelvy (author of Color for Quilters. From the insert which came with my col...

Applying HennaNatural conditioner to make your hair smooth.

If you are very conscious about hair care then coloring them with natural products like henna is the best option. It makes your hair look shiny and perfect while conditioning them well. Henna is derived from natural products obtained from a shrub that has been used as dye since ages. The advantage of using this natural hair care product in dying is that it doesn’t harm the hair. Unlike chemicals, it conditions the hair without damaging it.

Things Required:
1. Henna powder (depending upon the hair length)2. Lemon juice3. Plastic gloves4. A shower cap5. Brush (to apply henna on hair)6. Comb (wide toothed)7. Bowl (to create henna paste)8. Water9. Vaseline petroleum jelly10. Blow dryer

In his book, How to Break Your Addiction to a Person, Howard Halpern first explains what an addictive relationship is, then gives guidelines for recognizing if you’re involved in one. Then, he offers several techniques on how to end an unhealthy relationship (or an emotional affair).
I’ve compiled and adapted all of his suggestions into the following dozen techniques, excerpting what I found to be the most important passages for each.
1.	Keep a Relationship Log
Keep track of the events and happenings of the relationship, but above all, and in as honest detail as you can, set down your feelings about the contacts with your partner. The reasons this can be extraordinarily helpful are (a) It compels you to notice what is going on and how you feel about it, (b) It can help you to l...

By Benjamin H. FriedmanJim Harper noted yesterday that the Department of Homeland Security (after lengthy review) has decided to scrap its color-coded alert system. The change is long overdue–the alerts implied, absurdly, that danger was equally distributed across the nation. The fact that the Department never used the blue and green threat levels (general and low risk), which most accurately describe the true danger most Americans face from terrorism, showed the systems’ inherent threat inflation. Eventually, everyone started ignoring the threat level, officials stopped changing it, and system became a charade.
Jim argues that, in place of the colors, the Department should inform “the public fully about threats and risks known to the U.S. government,” treating us l...

In Response: The Kermit Gosnell Abortion Clinic Case

Dr. Kermit Gosnell was a Philadelphia abortion provider, and has been charged with several counts of murder after one patient died and several infants born alive were allegedly murdered. The grand jury documents [PDF] related to this case describe horrors encountered by patients who were ostensibly in the care of Dr. Gosnell. Let me be perfectly clear: it is an abomination when women cannot receive safe, legal abortion services. What happened at Kermit Gosnell’s “clinic” is unacceptable at any time, in any place.
I also believe that this horrific story is not a case study in why abortion should be further restricted.
The situations described in news reports are a violation of the women who trusted Dr. Gosnell and his staff to provide safe, good quality, abortion procedu...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Cartoon Character Facebook Meme. I’m Bambi. Or Not.
I’m Bambi. I’d like to be, anyway. But it doesn’t take much to bring out the Tasmanian Devil in me.
Yesterday ABC News reported on the new meme sweeping Facebook. People are replacing their profile pictures with a childhood favorite cartoon character.
According to knowyourmeme.com, the cartoon character game started three weeks ago in Greece and Cyprus. The original plan was to remove all pictures of humans from Facebook, but that meme morphed into yet another “awareness” game, similar to the bra color (breast cancer) and purse (female empowerment) games months ago. This time the good cause was a “campaign against violence on children.”…

Color-Changing Dressing Indicates Infections

When using dressings to speed up the healing process of an open wound, it is necessary to periodically remove the dressing to check for infection. However, removing this protective covering creates an opportunity for bacteria to enter the wound site.
To remedy this problem, researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Modular Solid State Technologies EMFT have developed dressings which change color if the wound becomes infected. Early tests have shown promise, and the scientists now plan to test their invention in the field at the University of Regensburg’s dermatology clinic. (more…)

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Facebook Wants to Know Where I Like My Purse. Here’s Where They Can Put It.
It’s meme season again.
Last year about this time, lots of women found this message in their Facebook mailboxes: “Help spread the wings of breast cancer awareness by putting the color of your bra as your status. Just the color, nothing else. It will be fun to see how long it takes before the men will wonder why all the girls have a color in their status.”
My colleague Frances Tobin was not amused. Neither was I.
In “My Bra? Color Me Furious,” I objected “not for myself, but for friends I’ve watched face this beast. Many of them aren’t wearing bras of any color because their breasts are long gone. Instead they might be we...

A recent blog entry by Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist, recently came across my desk that made the outrageous claim that one cannot chose one’s religion. If one’s family is a Muslim, you will be too, no matter what you actually practice — genetically speaking.
He relates this piece of news by suggesting that Obama cannot choose to be a Christian, because his family was a Muslim. He suggests that, genetically, Obama is a Muslim no matter what he practices.
If this doesn’t pass the basic logic smell test for you, then you’re not alone.
Like other world religions, Islam not only is a religion but also comprises largely endogamous ethnic groups. When a group of individuals remain largely or entirely endogamous (marry only other members of the group ...

Melanin is what makes our skin brown. This pigment is also the skin’s primary defense against the harmful rays of the sun.
Being people of color, the high amount of melanin in our skin is the reason why the incidence of skin cancer is almost nil and is why our skin ages more slowly than Caucasians.
Given these facts why else do we need to wear sunblock and why do we need to use it daily even though we’re practically in the shade all the time?
New studies have come up showing that even intermittent exposures to the sun as short as a few minutes (like that 5 minute walk to that nearby cafe) may do sub-clinical damage to our skin.
Slowly and with time these damages add up and become visible as wrinkles, pigmentation changes, dullness, increase in pore size etc.
Luckily, there are numerous...

With spring already here and the summer months soon approaching, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the warning signs of melanoma. Melanoma is a form of skin cancer; it is the most serious type, but it is also the least common. All skin cancers start in the cells of the upper layer of your skin, called the epidermis. There are three different types of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma begins in skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its color. Melanin also protects the deeper layers of the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. When people spend time in the sunlight, the melanocytes make more melanin and cause the skin to tan...

I know many of you are “highly sensitive” and enjoy articles on that topic, so I am excited to pique his highly-sensitive brain today!

Douglas:

One of the prominent “virtues” of high sensitivity is the richness of sensory detail that life provides. The subtle shades of texture in clothing, and foods when cooking, the sounds of music or even traff...

By David BoazAround the world over the past decade, longstanding and stultifying power elites have been toppled by what came to be known as the “color revolutions” — notably the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and hopefully the Green Revolution in Iran.
My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
Regarding my previous post “My Bra? Color Me Furious,” which has clocked in at 1,000+ comments: I guess I hit a nerve.
My initial headline was “My Bra? Color Me Dubious.” But who would click on that? Not me. Writers can be so dramatic. (Besides, furious sounds kinda like dubious.) In truth, I’m not so furious anymore. Mostly I’m grateful. And I’m sad about friends who were not so lucky. I miss them. I still love them.
My colleague Frances Tobin wrote an excellent post on the Facebook bra-color meme. We bloggers on Politics Daily try to support and respond to each other. Since memes can come and go quicker than strawberry season, I thought I’d better step it up.
Can o’ worms? Oh yeah! As a rule, ...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:

The bra-color meme that’s sweeping Facebook and allegedly raising awareness of breast cancer got a nice one-two punch from my colleague Frances Tobin.
Allow me to pile on.
Not for myself, but for friends I’ve watched face this beast. Many of them aren’t wearing bras of any color because their breasts are long gone. Instead they might be wearing a lymphedema sleeve on their arms, sometimes for the rest of their lives.
As a member of the all-too-exclusive club of long-term ovarian cancer survivors, let me first say I used to resent the enormous amount of attention breast cancer got over other cancers. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (also known as “pink nausea” by certain folks) seemed to begin in late July and end in lat...

Mid Brain muses:
Blondes allegedly have more fun but brunettes are healthier because their darker coloration protects them from getting skin cancer, right?
Sun tan and skin cancer
Wrong. According to a report at Science Daily new genetic research indicates that hair color is NOT a good predictor of skin cancer. Historically scientists thought that certain characteristics associated with having dark hair (dark eye color, not prone to freckles, tanning after repeated sun exposure or tanning without burning meant that you were less likely to develop melanoma. But now they’ve found that regardless of hair color, people with certain MC1R gene variants have a more than two-fold risk of melanoma. Science Daily says: “Traditionally, a clinician might look at a person with dark hai...

Researchers from Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University have created a color-changing strip that detects periodontal disease. Studies show that the strip is as effective as traditional, invasive, more costly tests. About eighty percent of adults have some form of gum disease, so quick, accurate diagnosis would be helpful to dentists and hygienists. Because of recent research that shows gum disease causes increased risk for serious health conditions, early detection and treatment are imperative to dental and overall good health. So here’s the scoop on how the color-changing periodontal disease detecion strip works (and let’s hope they shorten that name in the future)…

The new test involves an oral strip that changes color according to the level of mi...

Below we excerpt, in time for Valentine’s Day, a press release of an interesting new study linking red to sexual attraction.
* * *
A study by two University of Rochester psychologists published in Oct. by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology adds color — literally and figuratively — to the age-old question of what attracts men to women.
Through five psychological experiments, Andrew Elliot, professor of psychology, and Daniela Niesta, post-doctoral researcher, demonstrate that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. And men are unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction.
“It’s only recently that psychologists and researchers in other disciplines have been looking closely and systematically at the relationship between co...

In the International Herald Tribune, Pam Belluck has a nice summary of recent research indicating that colors matter in ways we probably don’t imagine. Her article, titled “Accurate red, creative blue: Color counts, study says,” is excerpted below.

Trying to improve your performance at work or kick-start that novel you want to write? Maybe it’s time to consider the color of your walls, or your screen saver.
If a new study is any guide, the color red can make people’s work more accurate, but blue can make them more creative.
In the study, published Thursday in the online edition of Science magazine, researchers at the University of British Columbia conducted tests with 600 participants to see how cognitive performance varies when people see red or blue...

All of you veteran Crohnies out there know exactly what I am talking about. For all of you newly diagnosed Crohn’s patients, I hope this will help you a little. And, everyone, please provide your insight as well!
Brown
Brown is the normal color of poop. There is a pigment called bilirubin that is formed when the red blood cells in the liver and bone marrow break down. This ends up (by a complicated process) in the intestines where bacteria begins to form and eat which turns the poop brown. When iron in the red blood cells combine with bilirubin, it turns brown and when the iron influenced bilirubin combines with the poop,...

An intriguing, anecdotal finding was recently reported by some news outlets that the implementation of blue-colored streetlights has reduced both crime and suicides:

Glasgow, Scotland, introduced blue street lighting to improve the city’s landscape in 2000. Afterward, the number of crimes in areas illuminated in blue noticeably decreased.
The Nara, Japan, prefectural police set up blue street lights in the prefecture in 2005, and found the number of crimes decreased by about 9 percent in blue-illuminated neighborhoods. Many other areas nationwide have followed suit.
Keihin Electric Express Railway Co. changed the color of eight lights on the ends of platforms at Gumyoji Station in Yokohama, Japan, in February.

Since the railway company introduced the new blue lights, they&#8217...

How do you draw from richer diversity in those around you? Today I’m especially excited about a roundtable I’m facilitating with very diverse leaders. If you look in on us at any moment … you’d likely ask … What does an engineer and an architect or health professional have to do with one another? Good question … and I’m glad you asked. In my group … we have a common vision to explore. With others I clarified one vision -- to create entrepreneurial directions for leaders. Would you agree that shared goal gives us common ground? It also compels us to look for talent in each person at the table. Why so? 1. We don’t speak the other person’s jargon – so people at our roundtable try to communicate with m...

This is what I see right now outside my window.Colors bursting, sharpened by the straight cool of the air. Pink heat pushes out. Autumn watches calmly. Summer dances in the heat of its sun, happily lost in play. With a slow stretch Autumn gathers herself. Summer's bedtime has come. (Source: azureone)

Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, Drugs, Research, Opinion, ProductsCircumstances of confusion invalidated a Diamyd clinical trial to protect insulin-producing cells in diabetes patients. This confusion amounts to a speed bump, but Diamyd intends to press on.
The company admitted hat the Phase II clinical trial of its gene therapy had been botched following a mix up over which patients received the drug and which got placebo. Diamyd is a vaccine based on GAD65, a major factor for diabetes due to an autoimmune reaction. The company designed the vaccine to reduce the need of insulin injections and prevent the destruction of beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. Also, by protecting these cells, it may allow them to regenerate in a non-autoimmune environment, and possibly set the stag...

Are you the type of person who can't keep anything to yourself? Do you blab everything and repeat what anyone has told you, almost as if it were out of your hands? When your mouth opens do you live in fear of what you might actually ...pass along? I do. It is a terrible problem I have. One that I have invested absolutely no time in trying to correct. That is where the name for my blog came from. YEARS ago, long , long ago, there was an absolutely raunchy, silly but in my own opinion, funny show on television called In Living Color. It was on Sunday nights and I think Jim Carey was on it. It was potty humor but I will admit it, I liked it. There was a character on it that always reminded me of my grandmother and myself. It was a man, I think, dressed as a woman. She would gossip about every...

Filed under: Skin Cancer, Prevention, Products, Thought for the DayAlong the pike comes a new product designed to send us an alert when we've had too much sun.Think about this:There are some fun and fancy bracelets on the market that change color when it's time to seek shade. UV Sol Beads, made with UV-detective pony beads and a removable fashion bead, feature off-white beads that remain off-white whenever there is an absence of UV light. When exposed to UV light, the intensity of the beads' color increases as the amount of exposure increases.Created by a science teacher who used the beads as a teaching tool for her students and then found herself wanting to reach out to others after a friend's battle with skin cancer, UV Sol Beads -- they cost $4.95 -- can cycle back and forth more than 5...

Filed under: Skin Cancer, Prevention, Thought for the DayIt's May. Summer is upon us. So is the hot sun. What a perfect time for an awareness month.May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. So now is the time to learn a thing or two about a disease that is largely preventable, extremely deadly, and almost 100 percent curable when caught early.Think about this:Someone dies of melanoma -- the deadliest form of skin cancer -- every 65 minutes. Women ages 20-29 are most at risk, with melanoma ranking as the second most common cancer in this age group. But anyone, regardless of skin color or age, can develop skin cancer. More than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year -- shocking considering the cause of the disease is no secret: skin cancer is caused mostly by too much s...

Filed under: Breast Cancer, Prevention, Products, Cancer SurvivorsI hadn't been on an airplane since 2001. So all of the customs and rituals of airport safety were entirely new to me. I had no idea I 'd be told to remove my shoes before walking through the security contraption or that my baggage would be opened, searched, and inspected. It was a whole new world for me. Prior to 2001, none of these security measures were necessary. A compression sleeve wasn't either.A compression sleeve -- my own personal security device -- is my new travel companion. Designed to protect my arm from swelling caused by the combination of missing lymph nodes and airplane cabin pressure, this sleeve fits my arm from wrist to armpit. It's tight like a glove and while it's not a very apparent fashion statement, ...
