To Heal After an Affair and Rebuild the Relationship

“For many people, an affair is deeply traumatizing [and] some marriages can’t recover from it,” said Jason Seidel, PsyD, founder and director of The Colorado Center for Clinical Excellence in Denver. But if you decide to work on your relationship post-affair, you must accept a hard truth: Another affair can happen. This is the paradox of healing, Seidel said.
Often, partners who’ve been cheated on will demand full access to their spouse’s email, cell phone records, Facebook and other accounts (or they’ll sneak around to get the access), he said. They see this as legitimate and essential to helping reestablish trust in the relationship. A common belief is “How could I ever trust you again unless you give me full access?”
While this thinking is understandable, it simply doesn...

The Myth of ‘The One’ and Other Relationship Fantasies

Psychologist Jason Seidel, Psy.D, has heard partners lament all-too often: “This isn’t the person I married” or “I’m worried this person isn’t perfect for me.” And you know what? They’re probably right.
But there’s more to relationships than a partner who remains the perfect fit your entire life. Seidel explains more about the myth of the perfect partner and other relationship fantasies.
1. Myth: Your partner will always be the one.
Fact: There is no “once-and-for-all best match,” said Seidel, founder and director of The Colorado Center for Clinical Excellence in Denver. People and relationships rarely remain static. So that once great fit may “become broken, stale or wrong for [you].” In fact, according to Seidel, as you continue to grow in your life, you might ...

Colorado Court Halts School Voucher Program

By Andrew J. CoulsonLast Friday, a Colorado District Court halted the new and unique Douglas County school voucher program with a permanent injunction. School choice legislation is a little like the Field of Dreams: pass it, and they will sue–and we all know who “they” are. So there’s a tendency to dismiss legal setbacks for the choice movement as purely the result of self-serving monopolists exploiting bad laws or partisan, activist judges. There are certainly cases that fall into that category, but this Colorado ruling isn’t one of them.
Oh, the self-serving monopolists and opponents of educational freedom are no doubt cheering it, but the ruling does not read like the work of a rube or an ideologue, and not all of the state constitutional provisions on whic...

And so, another working week is about to come to an end. Not a moment too soon, yes? This is, of course, our signal to daydream about weekend plans. Our modest agenda includes golfing with our shortest of short people, catching up on some reading and taking at least one cozy nap. And you? How about a day at the beach? A night out with someone special? Or perhaps a shopping trip to stimulate what is left of the economy? Whatever you do, be safe and enjoy. Meanwhile, here is an assortment of tidbits.
Chased by thunderstorms

As break today from searing heat, we get tremendous thunderstorms to wake us up. This is not the sort of thunderstorm like we have in Colorado that will leave the sky when it is through. This is an Ohio thunderstorm which will leave when it feels like doing so, and not a moment before.
Anthropomorphising Thunderstorms gets you nowhere in real life, but it amuses the brain while the storm lingers.
The trip to the dentist for teeth cleaning suddenly takes on biblical proportions: I voyage through thunder and torrential rain to have my teeth cleaned. Maybe I should read Job to get a bit of perspective on this thing.

Why Only Some People Experience High Altitude Sickness

Hi! Greetings from Breckenridge, Colorado. At 10,000 feet, I am told it is the highest resort town in North America. The Rocky Mountain scenery is breathtaking. But there’s a problem for about one in four of us who visit here, especially people like me who live at sea level. We can get hit with high altitude sickness and a few days ago, I was one of the unlucky ones.
What happens is your body isn’t used to the thin air and your blood has difficulty getting enough oxygen to your body. It usually happens at altitudes over 8,500 feet. You get an ongoing headache, you feel tired, you have insomnia (I was sleepless for two nights!), you could have nausea and certainly fatigue. Drinking lots of water and passing up alcohol can help, but even then some people have problems.
When I finally sa...

By Michael F. CannonAccording to the Denver Business Journal:
A spokeswoman for Aetna confirmed Monday that the insurer will no longer sell new individual-market health insurance policies in Colorado and will terminate current policies held by state residents no later than July 31, 2012.
Aetna had already announced that it will no longer sell child-only coverage or small-group coverage in the state. Colorado is one of 34 states where insurers fled the market for child-only coverage as a result of ObamaCare. Colorado took steps to try to stabilize its child-only market, and is considering requiring insurers to sell child-only coverage as a condition of selling coverage directly to adults.
Aetna isn’t commenting on whether ObamaCare played a role in its decision. Aetna customer...

By Michael F. CannonAn article at HealthPolicySolutions.org (“a project of the Buechner Institute for Governance at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado Denver”), about how ObamaCare is causing Colorado’s child-only health insurance market to implode, contains this startling admission by the top lobbyist for Colorado’s health insurance companies:
“Requiring all the carriers to sell this sort of plan creates a level playing field,’’ said Ben Price, executive director of the Colorado Association of Health Plans. “This is one of those unusual situations where we’re asking for more competition. If everyone else is in the market, the risk is spread across the entire market. Each company can afford to take on more risk.”

By Daniel J. MitchellIn Douglas County, CO, a jurisdiction with 240,000 residents south of Denver, there is strong public interest in the possible implementation of a sweeping school choice program. Here’s a blurb from the Denver Post:

Douglas County School District officials say an unexpected level of interest in a retreat exploring school choice today and Saturday is forcing them to add an overflow room and a video feed to allow the public to watch the discussion. The school board is investigating a voucher program that would allow students to use public money to help with tuition at approved religious schools and other private ones. The two-day retreat will discuss the findings of a school-choice task force that has been mulling several issues, including vouchers.

In a high-profile paper in the September issue of Health Affairs, Thorson and coworkers showed that the care at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO was superior to that of 20 other unnamed hospitals. Grand Junction is, of course the smal town in SW Colorado that became famous when President Obama visited there during the health care reform debates during the summer of 2009, and here’s what he said:
“Hello, Grand Junction! It’s great to be back in Southwest Colorado. Here in Grand Junction, you know that lowering costs is possible if you put in place smarter incentives; if you think about how to treat people, not just illnesses. That’s what the medical community in this city did; now you are getting better results while wasting less money.”
So, Grand Junction, a town of 58...

Colorado State University Plans to Mass Vaccinate Over 10,000 Students

Conclusion
In the case of Christine Adame, it was assumed that because she took her vaccination she was protected from the disease, or at least that is what she was told. Mass vaccinating the student body at Colorado State University probably is going to further complicate an already very serious situation insofar as other complications with vaccine adverse reactions, which even could be deadly, as sometimes happens in the case of Guillain Barre Syndrome.
I highly recommend Neil Miller’s vaccine book, Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health Practitioners, for more information concerning the meningococcal disease and vaccine. It could make for a better understanding of how to approach the health scare at Colorado State University.

There appears to be a new record for a cryopreserved embryo birth. From NPR:
In 1990 a couple underwent In Vitro Fertilization. They eventually had a healthy baby. They also, as is common, had a number of microscopic embryos that hadn’t been implanted, but were viable. They decided to anonymously donate them. Now, one of those embryos has produced a little boy, 20 years after being created.
In other embryo-related news, Colorado has another personhood rights bill (Amendment 62) on the ballot for November:
As used in sections 3, 6, and 25 of Article II of the state constitution, the term “person” shall apply to every human being from the beginning of the biological development of that human being.
So here’s my question: Under the proposed Colorado amendment, would this kid be leg...

Are Federal Grants Being Used For State Government Slush Funds to Track Immunizations?

Conclusion
The purchase of a new immunization-tracking registry with H1N1 pandemic emergency funds doesn’t appear to meet the intended purpose originally stated in the national emergency declaration. Therefore the money should have been returned and not spent. However, we know that governments – whether state or federal – are not good stewards of money.
Let this be yet another lesson learned on a common “bait-and-switch” tactic used by governments to spend money that they don’t have. Governments have learned when they have “free money” they either use it or lose it.
How do governments use you like an ATM spitting out free cash? Easy…
Just declare a national emergency.

WiFi in Boulder is a wondrous thing. Not only is it omnipresent and often open, the networks’ names themselves are often amusing, or at least different. Just found a network at this sitting named The Nihilists.
Unfortunately, it is password protected. I may never know why it’s named what it is. I feel so pedestrian, merely being on the Kitchen Guests network.

The air is lighter and cleaner here. I feel healthy just walking down to my favorite coffee house.
Actually, my favorite coffee house here is one of about four different ones around here. Five, maybe. Everyone has a favorite.
The plains intersect with the mountains right here. I can drive for ten minutes into the Front Range and be a thousand feet higher than I am sitting here in our home.
Two environments — plains and mountains — and several different coffee houses.

Most of the U.S. seems to be moving in the right direction (slowly but surely) as far as eco-friendly transportation goes. Cities are creating Bike-to-Work events and using hybrid buses and taxis. But Black Hawk, Colorado, just took a big step in the opposite direction by banning bike riding. WTF?
The town relies heavily on casinos for revenue, and vans containing gamblers drive through the town’s narrow, shoulder-less streets. A Colorado law requires cars to leave three feet of room while passing cyclists, which would mean they’d have to swerve into oncoming traffic. While it doesn’t seem safe for bicyclists to ride on a road with no shoulders alongside buses and trucks, no related accidents have been reported.
But lawmakers appear to be acting out of i...

Again and again. I love traveling, but hate the suspension of normal reality while it occurs. But we are here, nevertheless, as you see by the last post of beautiful Boulder Creek at almost-flood stage.
If only I could get the dog and the cats here somehow, we would be all set and have little reason to go back to Cincinnati, especially that now you can get Graeter’s ice cream shipped anywhere. Hmm, I’m talking myself out of Cincinnati as I type.
Benefit of staying here forever: I never have to drive through Kansas again.

This past week we saw the news media captivated by the idea that a 6-year-old boy, Falcon Heene had been carried off by a weather balloon. That is until the boy was later found in his own garage attic and shortly thereafter it was revealed on a television news show that the entire incident was likely a hoax. In replying to a reporter’s question, the young Falcon turned to his dad on camera and said, “You guys said that, umm, we did this for the show.” Oops.
The parents — Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene — have all along claimed it was not a hoax or a publicity stunt. Now, according to The New York Times, the parents will voluntarily surrender to police as soon as charges are filed, which is expected to happen on Wednesday.
While the truth continues to unfold, th...

In 2005, political opponents filed a complaint against the Independence Institute for not complying with the Colorado constitution and other campaign finance regulations when it spoke against a state ballot initiative. These regulations require, among other things, disclosure of the identity of anyone who has donated more than $20 to a cause and imposes registration and contribution limits on groups who have major interests in ballot issues.
The Independence Institute challenged the constitutionality of Colorado’s state ballot issue requirements and the issue is petitioning the Supreme Court for certiorari in Independence Institute v. Buescher. Cato has filed an amicus brief, in cooperation with Wyoming Liberty Group, the Center for Competitive Politics, the Sam Adams Alliance, the Monta...

It is the start of fall, and all changes in season bring changes everywhere. But not all changes are due to the seasons, I figure.
Our windows in Boulder look out upon the windows of the condos in another building, who have a good view of us. One learns about one’s neighbors, habits if not names. To my sadness, the Old Ladies With the Cats, who lived directly opposite us, are no longer there, and neither are the cats. Their place is now home to people roughly of the same age as my son. Sadness at the loss of two nice ladies, and two happy cats.
Also, they really have to keep the noise from the parties down. Whiny drunk girls sound even less attractive than even they think.
If the rain lets up, which I think it won’t, I’ll get out to see the ducks on the creek.

In the meantime, here’s a little movie of the landscape I saw from my windows on the eastbound California Zephyr as it made its way from San Francisco to Chicago, through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, past Ruby Canyon, Green River, Glenwood Canyon, Gore Canyon and Byers Canyon. (A few pictures in this video were taken from the westbound Southwest Chief.)
Song is “Train Dream” by the superb Canadian singer/songwriter Allen Dobb. All photographs by me except for the last two, which were taken by a young friend with his Nintendo toy.

The first comes from the group Patients United Now. Keep this video in mind the next time you hear someone say that a new “public option” is not about a government takeover of the health care sector.

The next video comes from the Independence Institute in Colorado. It is a nice complement to my colleague Michael Tanner’s recent study, “Massachusetts Miracle or Massachusetts Miserable: What the Failure of the ‘Massachusetts Model’ Tells Us about Health Care Reform.”

Finally, a really disturbing video showing Christina Romer, chair of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors, refusing to admit to a congressman that the president’s reform plan would oust Americans from their current health plans.

It’s a shame what politi...

Today in Boulder, the city shut down for about ten inches of snowfall. Unlike in Cincinnati, people here do not immediately decide that they are going to die as a consequence. There was nobody running around in a frenzy, heading out to the nearest grocery store to buy several bags of flour that, on more sober consideration, they have no idea what to do with.
We ventured out in the afternoon. Most places were closed, including the local Starbuck’s. If Starbuck’s is closed, you know it’s bad. Places that were open: a shoe store, the Boulder Café, the Boulder Book Store, though that last one was closing early due to the snow.
They are plowing the snow off of the streets now. It is night after this day of snow. The crunching of the snow underneath the tractors sounds like fi...

The possibility of my family’s first visit — with me included — to a destination in the west occurred at the time of the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble. I spent most of that Olympics season watching the skiing events, especially those that Jean-Claude Killy competed in.
That winter, Mom and Dad told me that we now owned a share in a condo in a place with the unwieldy name of Snowmass-at-Aspen, Colorado. This village was not only a ski resort in the Rockies, but it was the very best ski resort in the country and therefore, as Dad always saw it, the world. My mother started to discuss with all of her friends how she planned to decorate the condo, a difficult task to do all the way from Ohio. My father took out a subscription to a skiing magazine. I started reading the magazines a...

Congratulations! We have made it to the first day of Spring! I feel that this is rather a day of liberation because winter seemed particularly insistent this year. Unpleasant weather, regardless of how long it lasts, always seems particularly insistent and intrusive. If I had any sense, I would move to Florida or Hawaii and have done with it.
As it is, I am sitting now in a place more famous for its winter weather than Cincinnati is: Boulder, Colorado. Yes, I can now witness the Flatirons of the Front Range thawing out in the sunshine.

Some ducks wandering around in Boulder Creek today.

In celebration of this event, I took a walk outside, and photographed some ducks on Boulder Creek. Here are a few of them climbing stones in the stream.

Ever feel like living with multiple sclerosis is an uphill battle? Me too!
Here’s a story (which is related to MS, don’t worry), which will make you think twice about those feelings. I should probably provide some kind of a disclaimer that we shouldn’t try this at home or some such. After reading about it though, I can’t imagine any of us even thinking about it. It’s probably fair to say that none of us could have done it when we were healthy; no one ever has! The story goes like this:
Last weekend in the mountains of Colorado there was a race. For four years running, a group has gotten together to push their endurance. I mean really push. Racers (I guess that’s what they would call themselves) not only ski down the mountain’s face,...

Buck and I spent the past three days (since Tuesday morning) driving his car back from Boulder to Cincinnati. We arrived safe and sound, but with a good deal of dust and grit all over the car.
A good deal of the grit and dust comes from Kansas and eastern Colorado. I don’t remember the dust accumulating in Kansas, but there it is. I am not sure I remember much about Kansas, because it is, for the most part, more boring to drive through than people had told me.
We spent the night in Abilene. We left early Wednesday morning, and stopped by the Eisenhower Memorial Library. Buck, the big pacifist, had to see the boyhood home of one of our nation’s greatest warriors. Buck also reminded me that he was a Republican president, so there was Buck’s justification. But all we did at ...

Especially if those kickbacks are paid by insurers that give docs incentives to switch to a generic from Lipitor. And that’s the hot issue this week in the Colorado legislature, where a bill would prevent insurers from enticing physicians with cash to prescribe fewer brand-name meds.
The bill is opposed by AARP, Kaiser Permanente and the Colorado Association of Health Plans, but backed by patient advocates and Pfizer, the Associated Press reports. Pfizer lobbyist Colin Kennedy, however, declined to comment on whether the bill would benefit Pfizer financially. Nothing like candor to help vet the issues.
In fact, Pfizer is scrambling to bolster its best-selling cholesterol pill and has made a point of contacting state medical associations about insurer incentives in hopes of fending o...

The April 14th St. Louis Post-Dispatch makes a case for the need for insurance coverage for autism treatment. SB 1122 would allow for insurance coverage “for the treatment of autism under certain conditions”: Autistic children who are “less than 16 years of age” would qualify for up to $50,000 per year of behavior therapy. St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that one family, Molly and Steve Schad whose 7-year-old son Harry is autistic, have spent about $60,000 in treatments over the past 5 years. They have refinanced their home “several times,” borrowed from Molly Schad’s parents, and may have to sell her engagement ring.

Just to repeat:
Vaccinations do not cause autism
That’s the first sentence of an op-ed by Ned Calonge, chief state medical officer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in the March 30th Denver Post. Read the rest here. I’ll also note that Exposure to thimerosal during childhood is not a primary cause of autism—-and that, when it comes to autism, it’s not the vaccines.

” ‘The bad news is, your child has autism. The good news is, it’s treatable. The bad news is, you can’t afford it,’ ” said Betty Lehman, executive director of the Autism Society of Colorado.

“All of our school districts are independent,” Lehman said. “They don’t share resources; they don’t share information. The wheel is reinvented in every single school district.”

“I even felt guilty taking a shower.”

The third quotation is said by Jill Tappert, whose family is featured in an article, The Fight for Autism, in today’s Denver Post. Tappert’s 4-year-old daughter, Abby, is autistic; the Tapperts successfully sued their health insurance company, Anthem/Blue Cross, to cover ABA therapy—whic...

The drugmaker’s Boulder facility will lose almost 20 percent of its 359-strong workforce, which is involved in drug development and manufacturing. A Roche spokesman tells The Rocky Mountain Business News that work involving small molecule meds is being scaled back in favor of products involving highly active compounds and peptides, which are used in the Fuzeon HIV treatment that Roche makes at the facility.
“It’s part of Roche’s global strategy,” says the spokesman. “And in that strategy we’ve been targeted as a center of excellence for peptides.” The job cuts, he adds, will affect all departments, but he was vague about whether the move could eventually lead to job gains. “We’re very confident this is a solid business plan for ou...

Colorado is a dangerous place to be homeless. In Colorado Springs temperatures hover in the low 20s in December and January. The freezing temperatures drive many chronically homeless to build fires rather than seek shelters.Recently in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs a fire tore through area forests destroying 30 acres and causing $30,000 worth of damage. The fire was believed to be started by a homeless camp.Dr. Bob Holmes an advocate for the homeless says the fire is a by-product of a bigger problem. “The bigger problem is an issue that plagues many of the nearly 2,000 homeless people living in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs, mental illness. We have some mental health issues that are pretty rampant with the chronic homeless. That's why they are chronically homeless. There's ...

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Childhood, Adult Onset, Diet, Lifestyle, Research, Exercise, Daily NewsWhen I read the headline in this Yahoo! news, Obesity rates climb in most states, I took a stab at guessing the leanest and fattest states in America. My favorite state, Colorado, immediately came to mind for the fittest state. Ding, ding, ding ... that is correct! But I had no clue on the fattest state, West Virginia was a shaky guess. I heard the buzzer on that one, Mississippi became the first state to break the 30 percent barrier for obese, adult residents. But hey, I wasn't far off, West Virginia and Alabama are slightly behind the double-letter state.
Colorado has an obesity rate of 17.6. Yikes, this is the leanest state in the nation. Statistics were provided by the Trust for America'...

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Diet, Daily NewsJust yesterday I posted a blog about a guy kicked off a train in Arizona. Well, looks like this is the week of train-related news, because here's another one. Only this time, the passengers were stuck on the train. A number of diabetics were among the passengers who recently boarded a train for Silverton, Colorado. The group, consisting mainly of retirees, were anticipating a fun day trip with a little shopping and sightseeing in Silverton. Instead, they ended up stranded after gale force winds hit the region. The train was rocked around and the strong winds rolled boulders onto the tracks, making it impossible for the train to complete its journey.Twelve hours is a long time to spend on a train when it's not moving, I imagine. That's how long t...
