By way of exception I write a Dutch blog post to respond to an article in a Dutch Newspaper ridiculing speakers, writers, chatting and twittering people in a long-winded (3 pages) pompous, “literary” way, saying that they are terrorizing dictators. Although the writer, Thomése, might be right in some respects (all people want to express [...] (Source: Laika's MedLibLog)

It’s hard to find the answer to the first question this raises: “So what?” Kouri does not make the case he implies: that something sinister lurks because this group,...

Or as JAAPA states it: the inaugural installment of JAAPA’s first online only department. This column is a co-authored by Jim Anderson, Physician Assistant, and Susan Klawansky, Librarian.
Introducing Depression on My Mind

Depression remains one of the leading mental health concerns in most of the world, and is the cause of much pain and misery in life. Unlike most mental disorders, depression also is closely associated with suicide, which makes it especially troubling.
With that introduction, we’re pleased to bring you a new blog entitled, Depression on My Mind, written by Christine Stapleton. Christine has been writing a weekly column called “Kicking Depression” for the Palm Beach Post since 2006 and I came across her work because of the column. I found her take on depression down-to-earth and honest, two things I sincerely appreciate in a good writer.
So I am pleased Christine agreed to come on-board and write a blog for Psych Central. Please visit the new blog now and give her a hearty ...

Should You Upgrade to Wordpress 2.6.2 ASAP?

I haven’t finished upgrading all my blogs actually. And reading the post from the Wordpress blog regarding the new version, I’m still at a loss. Perhaps because I’m much more of a newbie user and know little about php or css. But upon reading that the new version addresses problems regarding SQL column truncation, MySQL, and SQL injection, I’ve hurriedly downloaded the new WP and upgraded some of my blogs (though, as I’ve said, I’m still in the process of upgrading all of them). Why so? It’s because I’ve been a victim of SQL injection before and admittedly, I didn’t know what to do about it then and I was grateful that a friend helped me out recover my affected blog. But I wouldn’t want that to happen again.
And so,...

Failing in Order to Succeed

Everyone’s heard of the need for self-esteem. If you don’t feel good about yourself, how can you ever accomplish anything in your life?
But what you may not know is the need for something else, which may be even more important — self-efficacy. That is, the belief that you have what you need in order to succeed (even if you don’t always do so).
People with self-efficacy often have very high standards for themselves, which brings about a paradox — they may not always have the highest self-esteem, nor do they always succeed (according to their own standards). What they do do is to never give up and always continue believing in themselves and their abilities.
The Wall Street Journal’s Melinda Beck has a column today about the role and importance self-ef...

Filed under: Type 1, Type 2, Childhood, Adult OnsetThe cost of health care is like a kick in the gut. A good friend of mine and her husband pay over $600 a month for their portion of a policy (her small business employer pays the rest), and her family deductible is $2,000. Over $9,000 a year for family health insurance, not including the 20 percent co-pays on each post-deductible bill. If you have a particularly unhealthy year or a chronic disease like diabetes, this can run thousands more until you reach a cap. I thought we had it bad, their costs are double what my family pays. I'm not going to even get into the costs of private health insurance or the plight of the uninsured.
Alex Berenson's July 29 column in The New York Times made me ponder about the rising costs of health care. Beren...

The Blog | Max Blumenthal: Diary of a Christian Terrorist | The Huffington PostVisitors to Mark David Uhl's Myspace page will quickly learn that Uhl is a student at Jerry Falwell's Liberty University, that he is a devoted Christian, that his name means "Mighty Warrior" -- and that he likes Will Smith's saccharine tear-up-the-club track, "Switch." Uhl reveals his career ambitions on his page as well: "I will join the Army as an officer after college." Already, Uhl was preparing in Liberty's ROTC program. Uhl waited until he was offline, however, to reveal his plot to kill the family of itinerant Calvinist provocateur Fred Phelps (famous for their "Fag Troops" rallies outside soldiers' funerals). The Phelpses planned to protest Falwell's funeral, a bizarre stunt designed to highlight Falwel...

Filed under: All Cancers, OpinionWhen I read something powerful -- a quote, a story, a reflection -- I write it down or cut it out or make a copy of it and drop it into a file folder I've titled inspiration. This file, among others, has been on many a moving van and has traveled with me all over the East coast, from city to city, house to house. And every once in a while, when I need a lift, this is my go-to file -- I go to it, pluck something out, and refresh my mind and spirit. This file has been with me since at least 1997 -- the date on a photo-copied Ann Landers column I have sitting before me. It's 10 years old, but there's nothing dated about the words printed on this single sheet of paper. They are as touching and moving and relevant now as they were when I first read them. They may...
