Steve Martin’s Simple Plan for Massive Success

Conclusion
Does being good mean that you can avoid all forms of sales and marketing and just sit back and let success come to you? No, of course not. You still have to get your name out there. But sales and marketing are easy things to measure and assess. It’s a lot harder to take an honest assessment of yourself and then implement a plan to get amazingly good.
It’s also well worth it. In the months after adopting Steve Martin’s mentality, I saw my referrals and follow-up-business significantly increase.
It’s not an easy or short journey. It takes hard work and time. When you start to looking for shortcuts or thinking about giving up, remember another great Steve Martin quote:
“Thankfully, persistence is a great substitute for talent.”
Stay persistent, keep working at getting b...

Today on Boston.com I was reading about these four guys with Aspergers that formed a comedy group poking fun at some of the common characteristics of people with Aspbergers. I have to admit I got a good laugh from the video below, where an Aspie shares his interest in Ralph Nader with a very unwilling “stranger”.
I have a confession to make. Last year, I did something crazy and unlike me. I participated in a comedy show called Penn & Teller’s Bullshit on Showtime. For someone as introverted as I am, it was one of the most scariest and embarrassing things I ever did. It’s not something I am especially excited to share. But I’m doing so for a reason.
The subject of the show was affirmations. It questioned whether there was anything really beneficial to it or just another laughable practice best turned into a parody on Saturday Night Live. You know like Stuart Smalley’s, “Daily Affirmations?” Surprisingly, it’s not all, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it people like me.” There are actually real benefits to affirmatio...

Art imitates life, and there’s nothing more hilarious than art imitating a woman in labor. I “stumbled” upon this incredible video and was in awe. Thea Monyee and her husband, GaKnew Rowel, are talented young poets who share their parenting experience at a Def Poetry session in Los Angeles.
What amazed me is the accuracy and clarity of Thea as she describes the laboring experience. Her comments regarding the labor-inducing medication Pitocin are both hilarious and laser-sharp and her description of the epidural placement were reminiscent of my days as an OB/GYN resident. Oh, would I get annoyed with the anesthesiology residents who couldn’t place the catheter correctly into a patient’s back on the first try.
Thea and her husband are a delight to watch. Have you had a similar...

I love funny online videos as much as most people, so when web clip show Tosh.0 started airing on Comedy Central, I watched a few episodes. I soon decided that I could no longer watch due to frequent rape jokes and other misogynistic and problematic material.
Last night, I saw a new promo for the upcoming season of Tosh.0 and was slapped across the face with a blatant rape joke. Unfortunately I can’t embed it, so you’ll have to go to the site to view it. Here’s the transcript:
Some guy, probably from a web video I haven’t seen: Hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your husband.
Daniel Tosh: Because on season 3 of Tosh.0, we’re raping everybody.
“We’re raping everybody.” That was deemed acceptable for a show promo on Comedy Central, and i...

“If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane,” sings Jimmy Buffett. “Time spent laughing is time spent with the gods,” says a Japanese proverb.
A sense of humor, for me, is by far the most useful weapon in my depression arsenal. Which is why Eric is panicked when I stop laughing, when my funny bone is split in 43 places.
For two nights in the psych ward, our group therapy session was to watch a comedy act by an actress (I forget her name, sorry … I was on too many sedatives to take notes) who pokes fun at depression and mood disorders, the way I try to do on Beyond Blue. Our psychiatric nurses were well aware of the studies showing that laughter can be a powerful tool for recovery and healing. In between meals and meds, they did their best to evoke a fe...

The pharmaceutical industry is neither funny nor improvisational, yet those two attributes are precisely what I have depended upon to make Pharma Marketing Blog entertaining as well as informative. But there are quite a few "funny" people currently or previously associated with the pharmaceutical industry. Kevin Nalts (aka Kevin Nalty), for example, is a former Merck Marketing Director and now makes a living -- I hope -- as a self-proclaimed YouTube comedian (see "Enlightened Stupid Marketer"). I also believe that my Twitter pal Lawrence Sherman (@meducate) dabbles in the comedic arts.At ExL's Digital Pharma East I learned that Jason Youner, ExL Conference Director, does standup comedy on the side at a comedy club in Jersey City, NJ.
It’s possible you’ve already seen Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, a new original stop-motion short film from boyfriend-girlfriend duo Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate (the SNL cast member who dropped the F-bomb during her debut sketch and recently got canned after just one season). In less than a month, this tiny work of genius has gone viral in a major way, and to find out why, just watch – and believe the hype.

Because, according to a recent controversial post on Jezebel, you toil unjustly in an insufferably sexist work environment. However, according to a scathingly funny open letter response written by 32 current female members of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart staff (pictured above), that’s just simply not true. We’re not sure whom to believe – we just wish one of these nice secretaries would get us a cup of coffee.

Meritocracies are brutal. You should know, since you yourself practiced a kind of meritocracy. As a child, you were bigger than the bug. Splat! Too bad for you, bug. How dare you exist.
"The Daily Show" sexist?
In the adult world, however, distinguishing between a true meritocracy and a prejudicial pattern of hiring is not so clear cut.
Oh well. I had a good run. I have been really careful over the years with avoiding the "reply all by accident" mistake that has created so much comedy and pain to others. I am not sure how I have avoided it so well - in part I am careful - but in part clearly just lucky. And I have witnessed some pretty pretty funny reply all mistakes as I am sure have most people out there. The funniest was one by well known evolutionary biologist who made a bit of a faux pas in replying to a message sent to the evoldir mailing list in the early 1990s. After witnessing what happened in particular with that one, I did become more careful with replying. So then yesterday, while at Stanford for an Evolutionary Genomics Symposium, I was tweeting and friendfeeding the talks (will post notes in a little while) a...

I keep listening to this song which takes me back to when I was in Paris having one of those moments where I thought to myself, “Take this in man, cause it’s one of those special moments when things just couldn’t be more special and perfect.”
The reason to why I’m doing this is not exactly to relive past moments. Presently I feel as if life is taking some interesting and exciting directions. So much so that these days have been about ten years in the making.
I kid you not.
The more I put myself out there on the path that is truest to me, the more people and opportunities come into my life. It’s been happening more and more.
On April 21st, I will arrive at my third anniversary from my slip in Mexico that lead to my crowning of “Miss Don Woods 2007,” the CAMH GLBT rehab progr...

By now you’ve seen the new Nike TV ad featuring Tiger Woods and the voice of his inquisitive (yet deceased) dad. Genius marketing, state-of-the-art technology, top-flight manipulation. But have you heard Ward Cleaver from Leave It to Beaver and Gene Wilder’s character from Young Frankenstein giving sage advice to ol’ Tiger? Much, much funnier.
Check out this clip from an episode of The Colbert Report this week on Comedy Central:

I first had this thought recently when a guy at the store with a shopping cart filled with organic groceries cut in front of me at the checkout line. He must have seen me – I’m a size four, not invisible. After he piled his eco-purchases onto the conveyor belt, I saw him peer back into my cart; he was clearly disappointed with my decision to choose non-organic cereal and vegetables. (We’re still in a recession, people!)
It reminded me of that “South Park” episode in which everyone bought hybrid cards, and instead of polluting the environment with smog, they clogged up the community with their smug.
Shoppers who buy “green” and organic products may feel like ethical superstars, but according to a study by the University of Toronto titled “Do Green Product...

Lie to Your Kids and Feel Good About It

If someone tells you they never lie to their kids, they’re lying. Some truth-stretching is essential in order to spare youngsters from life’s harsh realities, or just make parents’ lives a little easier. Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” coined his own term for it: Truthiness – truth that comes from the gut, not books. So, here are four instances when we give you permission to lie straight to your kids’ faces.
Santa/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy Dilemma
We know this one is controversial. Some hardcore parents spill the beans from day one about Santa Claus and the rest of them being big fat phonies. But those families miss a lot – leaving out cookies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer, hunting for eggs on Easter Sund...

So far so good for beating severe bouts of depression this winter.
Every year for the last several years it seemed to have gotten worse and worse during this cloudy grey and miserable season. Oddly enough, in my hometown of Winnipeg I never had seasonal issues. I can’t think of more of a reason to get depressed about winter than living a three-hour drive north of Fargo with extreme cold leaving one to deal with warnings of exposed skin can freeze within a minute, or less.
There is no doubt, winter here in Toronto is a challenge. It was hitting me around Christmas time. I really hate that time of the year. Maybe I should spend the fortune and go back to Winnipeg and spend it with family, as that would at least provide a diversion.
The remedy this year has not been tinkering with anti-...

Watching Others Do Good, Clean Scents Promote Altruism

What would you say if I told you that simply observing people thanking others induced more altruism? The simple act of watching someone else do something uplifting or a good deed motivates us to also do good. At least that’s what researchers found in a recent demonstration of this effect at the University of Plymouth.
In two experiments, researchers (Schnall et al., 2010) tested the level of altruistic behaviors amongst female students by asking them to view TV clips of three kinds — a neutral clip showing scenes from a nature documentary, an uplifting segment from “The Oprah Winfrey Show” showing musicians thanking their mentors, or a clip from a British comedy, intended to induce mirth.
When asked if they wanted to participate in another study (in the first experiment), ...

Here is an example of some to the stuff I post on PositiveLite.com

Today I have to do the one thing I haven’t been looking forward to: having to get up and recite David Sedaris is a group setting. I just keep telling myself, we’ll all just students, so let’s just have fun with it and not worry about.
I warned Christine (the coach) that she was going to make me cry, and I was going to tell everyone about it. But that seemed so far away at the time, and here we are today.
Time has been flying by. Last week I reconnected with a friend who has re-entered politics, Glen Murray. We first met way back in the 80s in Winnipeg when Canada Post transferred him. Over time we had become friends, and he was the around at the Village Clinic the night that I got my test results back in ...

Robin Williams’ Heart Surgery

Robin Williams has announced that he will return to stand up comedy. This is a huge announcement considering he had heart surgery just seven months ago. The comic made jokes about wanting to go back out on the road, saying he was “running out of merchandising money from Bicentennial Man,” one of his many movies.

But Williams is also acknowledging how different life after open heart surgery is. He says it has had a positive impact on his personal life, making him more grateful and open to his friends and family. In a rare serious moment, he said after such a life altering surgery, “you really do appreciate the simplest things like breath, and friends.”
He will go on a 20-date tour with his new act entitled Weapons of Mass Destruction.

OK. I’ve been super crazy busy this week. I think that is probably a good thing. Life always seems to seem more fabulous when you’re busy. Like you must be important or something if you are constantly running around. People need you. The world depends on you and you alone. Without you, people would be dying, babies would be crying, continents would crumble. (too far? Yeah ok…)
Well anyway, this week has been eventful. Lots of work to do and fun to be had. I went out with the ladies on Monday night and ate myself an Indian. No really. I rolled out of the restaurant dying. I don’t think I’ve ever been so full. I love Mondays.
Wednesday I went to a comedy night sponsored by my work. It was super awesome fun. Laughing is always go...

If you thought you felt better when listening to music you loved, turns out you are right. Literally. One study, conducted by Dr. Mike Miller from the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, shows that listening to music can “create a feeling of well being, which affects the vascular system.”

It has the same effect that laughing has on our hearts. Miller found that when patients watched funny movies and laughed, it “open up blood vessels, allowing blood to circulate more freely.” This is the exact response we want in our bodies. When we have the opposite happen, where blood vessels are closed, it adds stress to the heart and can cause cardiovascular disease. Miller found that by listening to music patients enjoyed, the inner lining of their blood vessel...

A great scene from “The Golden Girls”, although I remember Bea Arthur from her 70’s show “Maude” and her first portrayal of that character on “All in the Family”.

I love this photo.
Ok, if there is one thing I have learned, is to give it away all in the first shot. That’s why I charged.
But I digress.
What I’m actually trying to say is that I’m not going to show you my entire evening with Richard Ryder right away. This also will help hid the fact that I haven’t downloaded the video, let alone edit something up. I will say that it was a fabulous night, lots of fun and you should really go see his show.
However, I thought I would do a review of my experience of being deflowered in my first-time ever wearing of a Snuggie, and recorded for posterity. It’s not often I can say something was a first, and what a perfect way to bond with another prior to our fireside Snuggie chat. More on that later.

Ever since my higher power, Oprah, let me down by allowing herself to be broadcast live wearing a blue Snuggie, I have been gripped by it’s evil powers.

Lately I’ve been secretly checking out Snuggie sites, fantasizing about sneaking out to any one of the upcoming “Snuggie Pub Crawl.”
Why by the end of this night, I will be saying I have a page on the social network with sleeves, Snuggiebook.com.

I kid you not.

It’s so ktichy that I’m not so secretly digging it. I’m joining this new cult. In fact it will be complementary to my Kabbalah, if I could only get one in white for Shabbat. I have an answer for that, but I’ll get to that in a moment.

I’m a little pissed off with the makers though. For some reason they’ve confused Canada with Mexico and are c...

Bill Bailey, is a popular English stand-up comedian, musician and actor. In 2007 he was voted number seven on UK Channel 4’s hundred greatest stand-ups. Here is his joke about ambulance sirens in different countries.

Here are the lyrics and English translation of the song he sings at the end.
English translation:
Attention
We are injured
We have a man
He’s called Jean-Michel
His leg is broken
With a young girl
She’s caled Gisèle
She’s so beautiful
They climbed up a tree
To make love
They adopted the missionary position - Its popular

He broke his leg

In case you missed the latest sardonic insights from Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA, the other night he offered some important medicinal tips on women’s health and cholesterol that were sponsored by Prescott Pharmaceuticals. (Doctor of Fine Arts sounds like a legitimate qualification to be discussing your health, does it not?)

Colbert, who crushes statins on his bacon-chili-cheese corn dogs, tells us the Jupiter trial for AstraZeneca’s Crestor “is a great breakthrough in the battle to find things to prescribe to people who don’t need them…True, the drug costs $100 a month, but that is a small price to pay to not have the heart attack that there’s no way of knowing that you would have had.”

Forgotten is the name of a report about autistic adults by Autism Ontario: The report says that the province has a “piecemeal” approach to addressing the issues facing an estimated 50,000 autistic adults and calls on the government to create a framework to assist them.
With this guy making the news about autism somehow I’m not surprised that what we need to talk and do something about gets “forgetten.”
You can read the Autism Ontario report here.

In his new book, “Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid,” the joke-slinging “Rescue Me” star writes about the brain disorder:
“There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can’t compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don’t give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He’s just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.”

The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are primarily active at night and which can be effectively thwarted by the use of sleeping nets.
Laughter is the best and possibly the oldest medicine, as recently noted on BrainBlogger:
Laughter is a naturally occurring response to humorous stimuli and is a rather easily implemented and cost-effective clinical tool. Some lay publications even report that laughter is equivalent to aerobic exercise. It is true that laughter can increase blood flow, stimulate circulation, contract muscle groups, and improve respiratory function. But, these effects are short-lived and laughter is followed by a period of muscle relaxation, decreased heart rate, slowed respiration, and decreased blood pressure. This period may last as long as 45 minutes. Some research has shown laughter causes a decrease in the levels of the stress hormones epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol. Good interview, funny in places, annoying in others, but in general Tom holds his own and gets his point across (sort of). Take a look… (Source: Baggas' Blog)

Not that a 2 hour comedy show is the best thing for a schoolboy to watch on a Sunday night when he’s got school on Monday……. Priorities, priorities!

I have to admit my surprise to you. A few weeks ago, while hosting our last HealthTalk MS Webcast, I nearly fell from my chair in the broadcast booth.
I suspect you can all understand the amount of work, by several dedicated people, that goes into one of these programs. I may be the voice you hear, but there are engineers, producers, doctors, lawyers, transcriptionists that all make one of these webcasts happen; the list is pretty phenomenal. As example, the script I write for my portion of the show has to be completed two weeks in advance so it can be reviewed by a slew of professionals.
Don’t worry; I’m getting to the surprise…
At the time I submitted my script for last month’s program, our “celebrity guest” with MS was not yet nailed down. I just left a place marker in that ...

The trailer of “The Savages” makes the movie look a lot funnier than it is. Even calling this movie a black comedy – as some reviewers do – doesn’t seem quite accurate. Even though there are some funny scenes, I’d have to say this is a pretty straight-ahead serious movie about caregiving.
The movie focuses on the Savage siblings, a brother, Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and sister, Wendy (Laura Linney), who suddenly are thrust into caregiver roles when their estranged elderly father Lenny Philip Bosco) begins to slip into dementia.
These are all imperfect people. Both of the middle-aged siblings, the story makes clear, suffer from frustrations and disappointments in their own present-day lives as well as the residue of unhappy childhoods. Neither is married nor has a family. Bot...

A certain TV show about a certain lawyer and a certain hypothesis about what causes autism dominated autism discussions this week, for better or for worse—-when I talk about autism, I’m thinking of a very real boy, my son Charlie, and not so much about a fictional TV character. My real boy’s week was more of a struggle than has been usual.
This “Eli Stone” thing just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser, if not just a bit zany.

“Eli Stone”ABC’s new legal drama, set to premier on January 31st, this Thursday and the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) has sent ABC a letter asking the network to cancel such a “reckless” show. The January 28th New York Times notes that ABC is defending the show and plans to air it as scheduled. Here are some more details from an article in USA Today:

“Eli Stone” is a comedic legal drama: Stone has hallucinations featuring pop crooner George Michael, besides other “whimsical touches” (singing, dancing—-do I hear the pitter patter of the Ally McBeal baby?)
Stone is diagnosed with “an inoperable brain aneurysm&#8...

The MMR vaccine is the “autism shot“?
There is such a person (this would be comedien Jim Carrey) as an “autism whisperer“?
New terms from autism mother Jenny McCarthy. (I guess Carrey is then an “autism boyfriend.”)
But I think I’ll wait a bit before adding these to my vocabulary.

Actor Jim Carrey is, per his girlfriend, autism mother Jenny McCarthy, the “autism whisperer.” I take that to mean that Carrey has, in some not-necessarily-with-words-way, been able to have some kind of connection (in McCarthy’s view) to her 5-year-old autistic son, Evan (”‘Jim came into our life with an open heart and open arms. He’s learned a lot about autism. He listens. The power of listening. It can move mountains.’”)
Not being in a position to comment one way or another on that, I can say that mention of Carrey, star of Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, reminds me of how much I prefer the perspective of comedy—of laughter, and the good feeling of laughing together—to that of tragedy. I do agree with the ancient...

As most of yesterday’s news reports about autism were about Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete on Oprah, other stories were somewhat overlooked, including this one about another actor and celebrity who is himself on the autism spectrum. The September 19th Guardian profiles actor Dan Aykroyd, who notes that he has been diagnosed with “mild Asperger syndrome” and has an interest in the paranormal (and much else). Indeed, the article somewhat suggests that Aykroyd’s diagnosis (and difficulties at school) played some part in starting him on an acting career:
It was his parents (his father was a civil engineer, his mother a secretary) who started Aykroyd on the acting path by enrolling him at an improvisational class. They didn’t particularly want him to be an...

5 Reasons People Don't Laugh at Your Jokes

Humor is to the brain – what beans are to coffee – so why don’t people laugh at your jokes? Here are 5 no-brainer reasons why humor sometimes comes across more like a stun gun than a funny story. 1. It’s been told before – and few people other than a parent show interest in the same old gag. 2. You can’t remember the punch line – so you make one up or left it out altogether and hope nobody notices.3. You laugh hard at your own lines in hearty … sidesplitting belly laughs … so that people can no longer hear what’s funny.4. The topic has little to do with people you tell it to … and so nobody gets where you’re going with the humor.5. Your topic hits too close to home and so people feel insulted, intimi...

This is a clip from 'Troop of One Hundred', taken from a Japanese comedy/prank show, where a 100 people chase after random strangers and you see their reactions. Totally harmless but their reactions are priceless. For a translation of what they're shouting (thanks Digg):- For the 1st and 2nd guys, they shout: "There's a tsunami!!" (tsunami da!)- For the 3rd guy they shout: "That's the guy!!" (koitsu da!)- Nothing for the 4th guy- Last scene: "Watch out!!
“Autism is a tragedy.” “It is a tragedy to find out that your child has autism.” “It is a tragedy that so many children today are being diagnosed with autism.” How often have you heard statements such as these? (Try here and here.) Or a reference to life with autism as “hell,” as recently mentioned on Scobleizer?
Yes, it is not always, or at all, easy to raise an autistic child.
