Psychology has spilled over into pop culture in many ways throughout the years.
For instance, in 1911, one psychologist saved Coca-Cola by conducting rigorous studies into caffeine’s effects on cognition and sensory and motor abilities.
In 1929, another inspired his nephew’s successful public relations campaigns, which linked smoking cigarettes with female empowerment, if you can believe it.
Since 1895, other psychologists were directly involved in advertising, using surveys and other new ploys to get us to buy their products. (You didn’t need toothpaste to clean your teeth; you needed it to make you sexier.)
One psychologist even changed the comic book world and influenced an entire movement (that would be the feminist movement).
In the early 1940s, Harvard psychologist William ...

I am always amazed by how smart my patients are ! It's fun learning from them and they keep me on my toes. Here's a first person guest post from one of my patients ( who is a PhD and knows more about fertility than most gynecologists do !). She has done all her learning "on the job" - and this is an excellent example of what a highly motivated intelligent patient can do to help herself, when she sets her mind to it.She has carried out a clinic trial on herself and done an extremely good job of it as well. In fact, based on her experience, I am now going to start studying the effect of Vit D3 supplementation on women with low AMH levels. If Vit D helps to improve their low AMH levels ( and thus their ovarian reserve ) this will be a big step forward in the treatment of these women !) It's t...

Suicide prevention comes in all forms and formats. And why not comic book form, to reach kids and teens who digest comic books as easily as some digest video games?
Enter Captain America from Marvel comics.
I don’t see how anything like this could possibly hurt. Appealing to those who are suicidal in every form possible and in every type of media just makes sense. I liked the short story — it told a story of hope in just 12 pages. Because suicide is primarily about hopelessness — about running out of the resources needed to cope.
The 11-page story “Captain America: A Little Help” is written by psychologist Tim Ursiny and illustrated by Nick Dragotta.
In it, a despondent youth is poised to jump off a building when he spies Captain America facing a bevy of villa...

For many IVF clinics, the patients which cause the most distress are the ones who are poor ovarian responders. These are patients who have poor ovarian reserve - and are often heartsink patients, because no matter what we do , it's very difficult to get them pregnant !It is possible to get them to grow eggs and make embryos - and this actually makes the matter even more complex. This often creates false hopes - if I can make eggs and embryos, of course I can get pregnant ! All I need to do is to get the embryo to stick !Unfortunately, there is no easy answer, and every patient needs to look into their own heart to resolve this personal quandary for themselves. While we are very happy to aggressively superovulate these patients, I feel using expensive and unproven treatments ( suc...

You all know about Dilbert, right? The guy with a white dress shirt, black trousers and a red-and-black striped tie?
From WIkipedia:
Dilbert is an American comic strip written and drawn by Scott Adams. Dilbert is known for its satirical office humor about a white-collar, micromanaged office featuring the engineer Dilbert as the title character. The strip has spawned several books, an animated television series, a computer game, and hundreds of Dilbert-themed merchandise items. Adams has also received the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award and Newspaper Comic Strip Award in 1997 for his work on the strip. Dilbert appears in 2000 newspapers worldwide in 65 countries and 25 languages.
Well from time to time Scott Adams pokes medicine and doctors in Dilbert. And since this is very amusin...

Boy where did July go? It’s hard to believe there’s just one more month left in summer. Being that we’re more than half way through 2010, it’s a great time to reflect. Have you thought about your New Year’s resolutions and life goals lately? I have. In fact, it’s all I have been thinking about recently. I’ve been wrestling with the battle between accepting the present while working on improving myself for the future. What stirred up this sudden focus on self-reflection?
I’m enrolled in an online writing course and something the instructor said really hit home. She said that our unconscious drives our behavior and this includes how we treat others, ourselves and even how we write. In fact, if we are not aware of it, it can sabotage our life.
Staying disciplined with a project as uber-creative as a web comic is challenging work. Michael Buckley has a web comic 60 Ways to Leave Your Mother (Alone) that is raising funds to become an actual print comic. It’s a fantastic project. Check out the project video below…it’s one of my favorite promo videos ever.

Ocean pollution can be grim, scientific and – let’s face it – kind of boring to read about. But just like a random shoe in the middle of the highway, we still wonder: How does it all get there? While the mystery of the shoe in the median might never be solved, Jim Toomey, the cartoonist behind Sherman’s Lagoon, took his water-bound characters on a journey to explain the trash you see floating on the sea. Check out the first few strips below, then head to Treehugger to read the rest and get some environmental insight.

The recent controversy over the still-developing DSM-5 — that compendium of mental disorders the media love to call, inappropriately, “The Bible of Psychiatry” –has gotten me thinking about loneliness. Now, thankfully, nobody has seriously proposed including loneliness in the DSM-5. Indeed, loneliness is usually thought of as simply an unpleasant part of life — one of the “slings and arrows” that pierce almost all of us from time to time. Loneliness, in some ways, remains enmeshed in a web of literary and cultural clichés, born of such works as Nathaniel West’s darkly comic novel, Miss Lonelyhearts, and the Beatles’ whimsical anthem, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
But loneliness turns out to be a serious matter. And as psychiatry debat...

By David BoazIn Sunday’s “Pearls Before Swine” comic strip, the nefarious Rat is now a PR flak. And when his client accidentally blows up downtown, he comes up with a solid economic defense:

Go here for Frederic Bastiat’s original explication of the “broken window fallacy,” and for way too much detail, go to Wikipedia. John Stossel breaks some windows here and talks to Walter Williams about the implications. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

I don’t know about you, but for the longest time, I was afraid of my inner bitch.
In the old suppressed, sexist tradition of ‘you’re either a whore or a saint’, women are too often taught that we are either ‘nice’ or ‘bitches’ and never the twain shall meet.
So it’s not surprising that when I was growing up I felt it necessary to suppress any snarkiness. It was hard when what I really wanted to do was say something catty or roll my eyes or even admit out loud that I was so much hotter than Lisa, my high school nemesis. Good girls just didn’t do that!
Was I evil because sometimes the shrew just had to make an appearance? It was confusing back then when anything that come out of my mouth with a sharp edge was taken as anger and nice girls just ...

While the final outcome of an IVF cycle is uncertain, a good clinic will usually be able to make good embryos - after all, this is their core competence ! However, many clinics do not bother to show patients their embryos, and I feel this is a big mistake. We routinely show all patients their embryos, and provide them with a photograph of their embryos. We feel this is important for us - and for them. For one thing, it allows us to be open and transparent. We work hard at trying to get our patients pregnant, and if they can see their own embryos, patients know that we have done everything which was humanly possible. This gives them peace of mind, even if the cycle fails, because they know that the medical treatment they have received has been of high quality. It's also very good for reinforci...

in three months we will be moving to a brand new library, currently being built on our campus (link to the latest set of pictures of the construction progress). there are all kinds of decisions that need to be made on a seemingly hourly basis at this point in the planning. as the serials & e-resources librarian, i’m coordinating a plan for how the print periodicals may be handled in the new library. i’m approaching this as a team effort since so many people have a hand in the workflows associated with periodicals. we’re a bit pressed for time and suddenly don’t seem to have enough people on staff to manage all the details. i’m tempted to start handing tasks to whomever walks by my office, even if he doesn’t work here.
Infertility Comic Book has a positive review athttp://graphicmedicine.org/#/howtohaveababy/4532804857 !When I talk to medics about "comics and medicine", they often talk enthusiastically about ideas of using comic books to communicate with poorly educated or semi literate people, to convey basic ideas about health, hygeine or sexual awareness etc. Whilst comics certainly can be used in that laudable way, this conception of the medium probably says as much about the historic cultural stigma attached to it, as about the potential of the form. This free, web based, flash animated comic book has rather higher ambitions: mixing the accessibility of the graphic medium with in-depth information on reproductive physiology and technological help available to couples.
Part of my job is to negotiate license agreements for the electronic resources my library acquires. There are always a few sections of a license that need to be rewritten to fit our organization; one of those is the section on defining who is allowed to use the resource, the “authorized users.” The usual language of a license defines an authorized user group as “faculty and student,” but at my university we have researchers who are neither faculty or students, clinicians that don’t have faculty status, etc. I usually propose the following definition for “authorized user”: faculty, staff, student, researcher, and other affiliated user. I don’t usually propose adding “monkey” to the category. (Source: Organization Monkey)

My very first post on this blog was about winning the first Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic at the 2005 Comic-Con International in San Diego. So it seems entirely symmetrical and appropriate that my very last post on this blog follows my report on the same event almost exactly three years later.Today I'm closing up shop here and opening a new establishment right around the virtual corner athttp://brianfies.blogspot.com.It'll be the same old stuff from the same old guy, which raises the question: Why bother? Why force my six regular readers to change their bookmarks and links? Who do I think I am?Well, I'll explain...First: my site stats show me that a lot of people arrive here while searching for help and information about cancer. Mom died October 1, 2005, and the fact is that I left C...

Overview of about 4% of Comic-Con's exhibition floor.I'm home from my day-and-a-half whirlwind trip to San Diego for Comic-Con International, and wondering whether I'm going to write a little or a lot about it. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. I'm gonna try to keep this brief; we'll see how I do.I flew into town about 10 o'clock Saturday--traditionally the con's busiest day--took a taxi to the Convention Center and got my badge with no trouble. One big difference this year was that Comic-Con was completely sold out in advance, meaning there were no on-site ticket sales. That seemed to change the people-flow quite a bit and, with no enormous mobs milling around the front doors, my first impression was that it was less crowded than usual. That impression was recalibrated once I got ...

Last year I wrote about a charity walk my sister Brenda ("Nurse Sis") helps organize to support the National Lung Cancer Partnership. The organization hosts several "Free to Breathe" run/walks around the country this time of year, including a 5K/1.5 mile event in Los Angeles on August 3. I don't vouch for much--for example, the reason I don't provide a long list of links to cancer-related sites on my blog or at momscancer.com is I don't feel I have the expertise to evaluate them or the time to keep them current--but the NLCP is a worthwhile organization that provided good information for me when Mom was diagnosed.A few friends and readers were kind enough to donate last year and I thought I'd offer the same opportunity again. Brenda has set up a donation page for her fundraising team, "Bar...

So farewell then Pharma Giles… does anone know what has happened to the excellent (and oh so funny) Pharma Giles blog?
Was Giles paid off? Was he threatened? Why no explanation?
Maybe the answer lies over at Pharma Gossip?
Anyway, as it seems that Big Pharma doesn’t like being made fun of, here are the Seroxat comics once again!
Although the wonderous ego that is JP Garnier has left Glaxo now, I for one will never forget the caring, sensitive man who watched as Glaxo’s share fell by 40% during his leadership. And what about the MHRA investigation that this year found Glaxo had withheld evidence that the controversial drug, Seroxat, increased the likelihood of suicide among teenagers?
Way to go, JP…

I am so busy riding the deadline rocket sled that I can't even tell you. Can't tell you now, anyway, but in about a month you won't be able to shut me up. .I wasn't planning to attend the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but it looks like I'm going to be in town for a day after all. Saturday, to be specific, so I should be able to take a nice, leisurely stroll through the exhibition hall and not worry about overcrowding at all (that's a joke, son). I mention it now because I know some of my writer and artist buddies read the blog occasionally and Comic-Con is one of the few chances we get to meet. Don't be surprised to see me popping up at your table mid-Saturday. In fact, you probably shouldn't even take a lunch or bathroom break..More later. Happy Canada Day (just past) and Independence Da...

A recent discussion at an Internet watering hole got me thinking about pioneering cartoonists, comic book artists and writers, and the lack of respect they get. The business has always been cruel to its veterans--comic books much more than comic strips, I think, but both find new voices more compelling, new styles more diverting. They eat their old. That's the way of the world, the way of business, and I understand it. I expect a profit-driven publisher (and publishers not profit-driven don't publish long) to put out what sells. What pains me is that fans go along. The newspaper comic strip is just over a century old. Comic books have a history almost as long--at first, many of them existed to reprint newspaper strips--but turned a corner when Superman debuted in 1938, 70 years ago this June...

I’m not sure which one I like best - it’s maybe a bit unfair to pick on poor Alastair Benbow quite so much because Breckenridge was just as useless when he was interviewed on Panorama.
OK - I’m sorry, I’ve had a chance to reconsider that last remark - I take it back. Pick on Benbow as much as you like, he deserves it!

We are all familiar with comic books. Some of us may think it is something
from the past in this era of multimedia and online technologies.
However, comic books (or bandes dessinées in French) can be an amazing tool
to educate doctors and patients. This is particularly true when a problem of
diagnosis is evident (Alzheimer, etc).
Besides, they can bridge the gap of communication between patients and
doctors. Yann Colardelle at LMS has achieved a series of comic books aimed at
Medical Education. One of them, sponsored by Bayer, deals with Erectile
Disfunction.

Well, that went pretty much as I expected.Comic-Con International in San Diego was a tightly packed pressure cooker of crowds, noise and fun. Compared to the past two years, my impression was that the mob was maybe a little less unruly, perhaps because convention organizers stopped selling tickets and advertised the fact that particular days were sold out. We had no trouble getting our badges. In terms of organization and crowd control, Con organizers seem to have learned from past difficulties. Still, 120,000 people in one place is a bunch no matter how you slice 'em. A short movie I shot on Saturday, the busiest day, panning the convention floor from the mezzanine. Booths are downstairs, several simultaneous panels are going on upstairs. It's all more than anyone could possibly absorb....

Not striving (in an obvious way) to be educational. Just a fun read that's witty and brought to life with the most beautiful comic book-style color illustrations. Truly, this is a book that any child, not just kids with diabetes, would enjoy. So here's the premise: main character Kelvin is a boy obsessed with superheroes. One day Kelvin discovers he has diabetes, but the diagnosis comes complete with a huge surprise: Kelvin has superhero powers. (That's our hero pictured at right in full super-dude attire.) These powers include the gift of flight ("fly a betes") and Kelvin uses his new-found skills to help other diabetic kids. Along the way, fic...

I thought it might be an idea to put all three Seroxat comics together on one post for you all to download:
Comic 1

Comic 2

Comic 3

I’m not sure which one I like best - it’s maybe a bit unfair to pick on poor Alastair Benbow quite so much because Breckenridge was just as useless when he was interviewed on Panorama.
OK - I’m sorry, I’ve had a chance to reconsider that last remark - I take it back. Pick on Benbow as much as you like, he deserves it!
You’ll remember that Benbow is the man, who, when asked on television by pharmacology expert Dr Andrew Herxheimer about why GSK had given no warning about the severe reactions from Seroxat despite knowing about it for 5 years… simply replied “Seroxat has provided countless benefits to many people and enabled t...

San Diego e Italia

Yesterday I firmed up plans to attend the International Comic-Con in San Diego this July--meaning I finally found a place to stay, which is a genuine challenge when 100,000-plus descend on a city. As I mentioned earlier, the people who decide such things were nice enough to nominate Mom's Cancer for two Eisner Awards, and it seems polite to show up even though I don't expect to win (not being humble, just analytically realistic). It's a fun event regardless. I'll get to sign some books at my publisher's booth, see a few friends, and no doubt make one or two new ones. My wife and I also enjoy the city itself and we'll make a nice, not-all-comics-all-the-time vacation of it.I also found out yesterday that the Italian edition of Mom's Cancer will be published in June. And that's literally all...

Well now, will you look at what just turned up - a new Seroxat comic called “Buying Our Silence”.
Quite apt really, given what’s going on in the High Court in London… I wonder what the media would make of this case if it ever did come to court. Just imagine all the damaging detail that would come out - I doubt Glaxo would ever sell another drug again. Panorama is one thing, the High Court is quite another

The two links here will take to the first Seroxat comic and the second one…
…and this link will take you to a previous post Buying Our Silence, which I might humbly suggest was part of the inspiration for this latest Seroxat comic?
Click on the pages to see a full size image and then download and distribute as you like - but remember, I’m sure i...
